I don't see anything wrong with Government putting Interisland ferry services up for tender in future. Private operators would lease suitable ferries and provide an economically competitive service. That's how it's done in Europe, the Baltics, Ireland and the Med. I envisage at least two more ferry operators competing, just as Bluebridge does now without costing NZ taxpayers a cent. Surely the role of government is to monitor operational standards, not to engage in a commercial activity.
so when they sold off the rail ways and they where run down to the point they where unsafe and we had to buy them back for insane amount, you want something like that? Or when wellington sold off the wicked cheap electric bus line and they ran that into the ground and they had to pull down all the infrastructure and replace it with more costly diesel buses? You want that right? you 🤡
This rhetoric is so wrong. Just please go do some research before repeating this nonsense. Every single example of privatisation of public assets has failed. Ferries, trains, water, roads... everything... Bluebridge does cost taxpayers money. They don't pay anything towards the infrastructure that surrounds them, that they benefit from. They operate to suck a profit out of this country and nothing more. And they also breakdown. As seen literally yday. And they are unreliable. Go look at UKs ferries and see what a disaster they are.

Cancelling the interislander contract was rash and politically motivated rather than economically motivated. Changing the contract to remove the requirement to have roll-on-roll-off train capability would have substantially reduced the land-side infrastructure cost, and the main freight highway would have had the new boats it needed without the massive contract break payment. The decision to buy the roll-on roll-off rail ferries was stupid, but it would have been a salvageable situation if the government had taken a breath and used common sense.
"Stop the dumb stuff": PM talks Wellington's economy, Interislander, City Council - NewstalkZB - 19 September 2024 Kia ora koutou katoa, ngā mihi nui ki a koutou i tēnei rā. Greetings to you all, warm regards to you on this day. Summary In a recent interview, Prime Minister Christopher Luxon discusses his government's communication strategies, public service cuts, and the state of Wellington city. Luxon deflects responsibility for the negative impacts of public service cuts on Wellington, shifting blame onto the local council and the choices of its voters. He emphasizes neoliberal economic policies as solutions, while downplaying concerns about social and economic consequences. The interview reveals a dismissive attitude toward democratic processes and a reluctance to accept accountability for the government's role in systemic issues affecting New Zealand. Critique "Well, no, the local vote in a democracy, you know, then the Wellington people get a chance every 3 years to determine who their local councillors are and who their mayor will be and how the city will be led. That's their decision. They've made their decision." - Prime Minister Christopher Luxon Christopher Luxon's cavalier dismissal of Wellington's woes as merely the result of its own electoral choices is a stark example of the neoliberal arrogance that pervades his leadership. By absolving his government of any responsibility for the negative impacts of public service cuts, Luxon reveals a deeper agenda that prioritizes economic austerity over the well-being of communities. As the Prime Minister, Luxon cannot wash his hands of the consequences of his government's actions. His assertion that "we are, you know, we're wanting to rightsize the public service and make sure it's delivering in a sharper way" ignores the human cost of such cuts. The public service isn't just a line item on a budget; it's the backbone of social support that many New Zealanders rely on, particularly marginalized groups like Māori and Pasifika communities. Luxon's neoliberal policies echo the disastrous reforms of the 1980s, where economic liberalization led to increased inequality and hardship for many. A study by the New Zealand Council of Christian Social Services highlighted that the neoliberal reforms disproportionately affected low-income families and Māori communities, exacerbating existing disparities ([NZCCSS](nzccss.org.nz/work/impacts-of-neoliberalism/)). Furthermore, Luxon's deflection of responsibility onto local councils ignores the systemic underfunding and constraints imposed by central government policies. When he says, "I want councils to focus on the basics and do the basics brilliantly... don't do vanity projects and nice-to stuff," he undermines the autonomy of local governments and dismisses initiatives that could address social inequities. This attitude is reminiscent of colonial paternalism, where those in power dictate terms without engaging with the communities affected. By telling Wellingtonians that they "voted for this Administration," Luxon sidesteps the legitimate concerns of the people and fails to acknowledge the role of his own government's policies in creating the current challenges. The impact of public service cuts on Wellington is evident in the struggles faced by its residents. The reduction in public sector jobs not only affects employment but also reduces essential services. According to a report by the Public Service Association, these cuts have led to increased workloads and stress among remaining staff, diminishing the quality of services provided ([PSA](www.psa.org.nz/.../news/public-service-cuts-impact/)). Moreover, Luxon's focus on economic indicators over social outcomes perpetuates a system that values profit over people. His emphasis on getting "the economy growing very shortly" fails to address the root causes of inequality. Economic growth does not automatically translate to improved living conditions for all, especially when policies favor the wealthy and neglect the marginalized. The government's reluctance to invest in critical infrastructure, such as the long-discussed Mount Victoria Tunnel in Wellington, further illustrates this point. Luxon's non-committal stance-"he'll come out and say something about it shortly"-demonstrates a lack of urgency in addressing issues that significantly impact communities. In contrast, community and iwi-based solutions offer pathways to more equitable and culturally grounded outcomes. By involving Māori perspectives in decision-making processes, policies can be developed that address the specific needs of indigenous communities. Initiatives like the Whānau Ora program have shown success in empowering Māori families through a holistic approach to health and well-being ([Te Puni Kōkiri](www.tpk.govt.nz/en/whakamahia/whanau-ora)). Furthermore, strengthening local governance by genuinely partnering with councils, rather than dictating terms, can lead to more effective solutions tailored to community needs. The principle of subsidiarity suggests that decisions should be made as closely as possible to the people they affect, a concept well-understood in Māori society through the importance of hapū and iwi in governance. Luxon's approach undermines these possibilities by centralizing power and ignoring the value of local and indigenous knowledge. His government's neoliberal agenda continues to marginalize those already disadvantaged by systemic racism and economic inequality. As the saying goes, "He kokonga whare e kitea, he kokonga ngākau e kore e kitea"-The corners of a house can be seen, but not the corners of the heart. Luxon's policies may address visible economic metrics, but they fail to consider the unseen impacts on the hearts and lives of the people. Conclusion Prime Minister Luxon's dismissive attitude toward Wellington's challenges and his neoliberal policies exacerbate systemic inequalities and ignore the needs of marginalized communities. By shifting blame and avoiding accountability, he perpetuates a cycle of neglect that disproportionately affects Māori and Pasifika peoples. Embracing community- and iwi-based solutions offers a more just and effective path forward, one that values people over profit and acknowledges the importance of culturally grounded approaches. New Zealand economy is all based on population growth and nothing else. How unsustainable, short sighted, and yes indeed DUMB to bring in hundreds of thousands of people from low wage developing nations and expect long term prosperity ? In fact in the last 15 years of population growth ( mostly migrants from poorer nations ), wages have stagnated , productivity has plummeted and housing has remained unaffordable, not to mention unnecessary strain on infrastructure, schools and medical care. The only period where there was record wage growth, and pressure eased on infrastrucure, hospitals etc was during lock down when people could not enter NZ and many had left. This was a brief window into what New Zeand could be like with minimal population growth

The one concept mentioned would also require port infrastructure upgrades and not look to the future for freight movement and worse, will cost more than the 2 boats already ordered. The Wellington and Picton Interislander ferry terminals were built in the early 1960's are now past their used by dates and need major rebuilds to meet new seismic codes and future proof for the next 100 years growth and sea level rises.
You want that right? you 🤡
Bluebridge also suffer from ferry breakdowns.
@@chrismckellar9350 Yes that's true which is why more competition is better than less.
Go look at UKs ferries and see what a disaster they are.

finally some relevant questions
Cancelling the interislander contract was rash and politically motivated rather than economically motivated. Changing the contract to remove the requirement to have roll-on-roll-off train capability would have substantially reduced the land-side infrastructure cost, and the main freight highway would have had the new boats it needed without the massive contract break payment. The decision to buy the roll-on roll-off rail ferries was stupid, but it would have been a salvageable situation if the government had taken a breath and used common sense.

Summary
In a recent interview, Prime Minister Christopher Luxon discusses his government's communication strategies, public service cuts, and the state of Wellington city.
Critique
"Well, no, the local vote in a democracy, you know, then the Wellington people get a chance every 3 years to determine who their local councillors are and who their mayor will be and how the city will be led. That's their decision. They've made their decision." - Prime Minister Christopher Luxon
Christopher Luxon's cavalier dismissal of Wellington's woes as merely the result of its own electoral choices is a stark example of the neoliberal arrogance that pervades his leadership.
Conclusion
Prime Minister Luxon's dismissive attitude toward Wellington's challenges and his neoliberal policies exacerbate systemic inequalities and ignore the needs of marginalized communities.

Its also New Zealands biggest egg.
