The reason why they're connected it's because their are how you perceive the confrontations and your surroundings, as the character, you can see how they change depending on how you behave, and how that changes your psyche, also does your perception as seen in the genocide route. Pacifist is the most wholesome one, where your kindness results in saving the world and as he says on the battle against asriel, it doesn't feel like a battle at all. Because you as the character, you just want to help, not to harm

Most of these songs are “about” or somehow involved with one character in particular who has a few different sides to him. He’s tragic, friendly, heartwarming, earnest, but also cruel, terrifying, solipsistic, and deeply, deeply sad. The plot of the entire game pivots around him, the horrible circumstances of his existence, and his efforts to do anything about it.
22:50 Since you asked about where Toby got his sound effects, there's actually a ton of sources, some made by him, some are just default FL studio instruments, some even being obscure old Ronald McDonald commercial clips or heavily edited Spongebob lines, but the most prominent ones are definitely FFVII, Touhou, and the Mother series (mostly Earthbound, which is Mother 2). He uses instruments from those games' soundtracks a lot, and it has inspired his music writing as well with those games (especially the latter 2) being what got him interested in music in the first place, so even though he learned music by ear he was kinda' guided a bit by those games. Probably the biggest and most obvious example of this is in Finale at this little midsection at 11:02 , those background trumpets are from Touhou, they're the famed ZUNpets named after the developer and composer of and for Touhou, Jun'ya "ZUN" Ota. If you're curious to see just how much those games influence his work you might want to check out any of those games' OSTs in the future. The Pacifist story of Undertale can do amazing things to your emotions. This game is one that most players will never forget, especially that hug at the end. I was actually ugly crying and my Mum came in and asked me if I was okay.
Haha. Six of them. A child patient, dying eventually, for a human cannot live forever, nobody can. A child brave, fighting till their very end, but unable to pass what must be outlasted. A child valuing kindness, unable to do what was necessary. A child valuing perseverance, determined to do whatever necessary. A child filled with integrity following their own definition of right, uncaring for its implications. A child filled with justice learning what to call right, and keeping that consequence or fairness to their very end.
13:28 can see that toby is amazing at righting storries without a single line past the music titles and leit motifs. thats literaly it. except you dont get the childhood part until later in the game.

Undertale was an incredible internet phenomenon, it caused tens of millions of people to enter it's community, even those that didn't play it. In 2018 it had 3-4 millions players on steam, not counting how many people played it for free in the years when it was free and not on steam at all, and when it came out on consoles in the following years, and the fact it was made by ONE person, who also composed all the music, with the help of his small team of friends, which was a handful of people. Even tho it's aesthethic was not unique in the slightest, it boomed, it became so popular, i think in part it was for the music, and for how good the game actually is, the uniqueness is found in it's lore and storytelling, how the game interacts with you, it's easter eggs and a lot more. If you did not play it, i absolutely recommend doing so, not because of the joy and sadness you will probably feel playing it, but because of the surreal experience it provides the player, there is no other game i will ever compare to Undertale except Deltarune, which came after, beacause Undertale is simply its own thing.
I just love this ost, it is some of the most sincere and beautiful musical writing in gaming. I heared it said that Toby Fox wears his musical heart on his sleeve, and it couldn't be more true.
Fallen down NEVER was even in my top 50 favorite undertale tracks, BUT.. Now I'm listening to this short and kind melody, and it's makes me so emotional.. And this background sound... I don't know how to call it, but I'm definitely fell in love with it
I think Fallen Down Reprise (and with it Fallen Down) gets outshined due to Hopes and Dreams / SAVE the World! / His Theme happening right after, but it's actually an amazing song, I love it.
Very glad you listened to the last three together. It's the prime experience for some of the best songs in the OST. Also you should definitely play the game and get emotionally devastated.
It's funny how you mention "It sounds so heartwarming. It sounds like a soul ticking. It sounds like a boss fight... etc. What just makes it all soo good, because that's exactly what happens in the game at the time. Most of the OST is about being happy, heartwarming, sourrounded by friendly creatures, and then you meet your friend, and then turns to your nightmare what you keep phasing in and out. As you said Toby Fox knows all about emotions. Not just the music speaks emotion, not just the creatures in it speaks about emotions, but also the base of the game mechanics is about dealing with emotions.
god the Undertale OST is just so good, there are still tracks like Undertale and His theme that still get me emotional to this day. definitely recommend checking out the game seriously. Also funny how Finale, Your best friend, and your best nightmare lined up as finale is supposed to be at the end of those three lol.
He's tearing up and saying "I could never play Undertale if the music alone is this emotional." And I'm folding my arms and thinking "they played the songs out of order, the experience is ruined forever, goddammit why did you play Finale before Your Best Nightmare, everything is terrible forever"
So glad you finally got around to reacting to these. By far most of the best songs from Undertale. I always gotta lump Hopes and Dreams/Save the World/Last Goodbye in as one song since that's how they are intended to be listened to and thusly all three are my favorite tracks from the game. Now you see why I mentioned that Mr. Sauceman so obviously took inspiration from these last three songs when making Unexpectancy 3 in Pizza Tower. He had that "Toby Fox guitar" and crammed as many leitmotifs in as he could, just like Toby.
7:02 that bit with the delay or whatever the effect is called caught me SO off guard the first time I listened to this track, because with headphones the surrounding sound gets way deep into your brain
Man seeing you get choked up got me choked up I went to college starting int 2015 playing Undertale was both the first PC game I played, the first game I owned on my now stuffed Steam account, and the first game I played in college. All because I heard Megalovania in a Smash 4 Shulk combo video.
Aww it’s so unfortunate that you listened to finale before your best nightmare. They’re meant to be the other way around. At least you got hopes and dreams and save the world and last goodbye the way they’re meant to be experienced
Its amazing that you can tell that hopes and dreams is about saving the world, a boss battle, a confrontation yes, but you approach it from a place of compassion, not anger or hate
35:39 wow, this part really hits hard and I think SAVE the world is definitely one of my favourite themes in the entire soundtrack Also: I would really recommend listening to the resident evil 4 soundtrack
You asked an interesting question in "Where he gets his soundbank?". 99% of Undertale's (and Deltarune's too) sounds are soundfonts. His main ones are SGM soundfont, THFont and Squidfont Orchestra. Also most of the sound in Undertale are detuned either a half step or a full step. Some, like the bass piano at the start of Finale, are 3 or 4 half step detuned. FL studio causes different sounds when detuning an instrument, and toby uses it to his advantage
There haven’t been many games where I have cried during it, but this game is the example. His theme ALWAYS brings me to tears. The first time I heard it in Memory and then understood the meaning and sadness of the theme at the end. It makes me feel😢😢 Undertale is just a special game. The namesake song as well makes me cry a bit, because of the moment when it plays. Where you learn the backstory
Somehow, I get the feeling Paul Williams would love the more emotional side of Toby Fox's musical work, they both have a strong understanding of the smile disguising a wounded soul, or the tears that come from a strong heart.
I think you’ve gotten the gist of Undertale. It’s cute and funny and blindsides you right in the feels. Ironically the hardest part is it acts real gentle about it, breaking it to you like you’re 8.
His Theme hurts me so bad. Because it’s woven into the entire soundtrack - HE was always there with us. He is the heart of the story, and the only character that can’t be saved.
All the music works perfectly in their context, and some parts hit like a semi truck. I'd definitely recommend playing! You were pretty close with some of your theories. If you finish with the soundtrack, their anniversary concert is STUNNING. :)
"His theme" is an extremely emotional song tied to a very important and personal part of the game and to protect the integrity of the story and prevent spoilers toby fox opted to avoid naming the person that the theme is tied to as he was very aware of data miners and took many sets to block them.
After the Warnings and then static in yours best Nightmare, it play the Fun song with no words, and a different background beat. Warnings, I am no Musician.
From the very start I can tell this is going to be a good video. "Toby you are Not Allowed to mess with people's feelings like that", that was basically my exact reaction to when the track A CYBER'S WORLD started playing in Deltarune Ch2. I remember out loud saying "Toby no... Toby I can hear you're doing a thing. Toby you can't- (the beat drops) TOBY YOU CAN'T KEEP GETTING AWAY WITH THIS". Every song is just a masterpiece, looking forward to the next 40 minutes where I get to watch someone discover those masterpieces for the first time ^^
"Hopes and Dreams" is my favorite track of the game. And it's a WONDERFUL boss fight. It's full of emotions that you gathered during the game, and the relationships you formed with the characters coming to a sort of fruition. It's one of the only times in the game where you actually feel like nothing can stop you. It makes you feel like the "Good.Boss" of the game. It's just pure joy. And it's one of the many reasons the game has such an emotional impact on people. ❤️ The game just sticks the landing on all fronts. Such a rare phenomenon, and with celebrating.
When you said "when it repeats, it changes"... You have no idea how much that phrase encapsulates the whole of Undertale, because there's 4 main paths you take in the game, and to experience it fully, you take all of them. When it repeats, it changes.
06:50 - When I listen to this, to this waltz, I think of that classic merry-go-round where you sit on the horses and everything spins like a music box. And the action is set in the 1930s and you can just hear this waltz in the background. And everything is so slow and calm. Children dressed in old-fashioned clothes from the old days. Imagination is an amazing tool. And music drives it all nicely. 16:28 - And suddenly I find myself in Europe (actually, I've lived here all my life) and it's the 90s, I'm in a disco somewhere in Poland and the DJ goes crazy. The DJ later turned out to be a satanist. That's how I interpret the song.
You see how good a Soundtrack is, when a composer was surprised by listening just "Once Upon a Time" This entire game is a masterpiece, nobody is convincing me otherwise.
If you get that sad over the music, after you finish all routes and and get all the lore, I don't think you'll be able to cry ever again from how emotional the storyline can get, sad emotions and friendship hit in the pacifist route, but judgment and regret hits in the genocide route, it's the best game, it's so well made, and everything about it just amazes me, and it's the best game for interactive storyline and it is kinda similar to real life, most of the things in that game are based upon real life things.
"Finale" would've hit a bit different if it came after "Your Best Nightmare". Notice that "Finale" has the same beat, particularly in the second portion, as "Your Best Nightmare".
I love how often you are right when you say something about the vibes of the songs. I am always fascinated how people can recognize what approximately happens in the game based on its music.
Now what I think are the main theme missing from deltarune are: Smart race, It's pronunced rules, Chaos King, Don't forget, And from Undertale: Spear of justice, Heartache, CORE, Death by glamour Determination.
what song is called hopes in dreams well the kind that is about a kid dies to humans after going through a magic seal to put his friends body in the flowers has her last wish before her death to see them but to do that he had to take her soul and come make to life as a flower(your best friend) that can't feel any thing by a the new royal after W. 26:12 that "Amén, hermano" took me so off guard, I wasn't looking at the screen and for some reason that called my attention so much. Probably because I speak Spanish--
This last 2 sound track is from the finale boss battle from undertale true pacifist route/run and the asgour (sorry don't know the spelling) theme song is insane as hell and that my favorite one yet
Loved your analysis and enthusiasm for music! This soundtrack never fails to move me. I had a bad day but your voice combined with the tracks made me feel better 😊 Thank you! (On a completely unrelated note, this comparison struck me and now I can't unhear it: you sound very, very similar to the Mega-rich Light-bending guy from Disco Elysium! 😂)
The song "his theme" refers to ASREAL, and "him" as one who shouldn't be spoken of much Hopes and dreams is the boss battle between you and ASREAL Dreemer
The masterpiece made by one guy, the whole story, music and characters, it's all made by a fox (Toby Fox)... everything can be describe by a word that is Undertale
Figured I'd lay out a bit of a theme/leitmotif library for you, going track by track, for the ones you listened to here. It's mostly themes, none of these are actually short enough to warrant being a motif (which is defined as the shortest recognizable musical fragment, a call and response melody cannot be a motif and all of these are call and response; but who cares about using terms technically correctly?) these themes are the bare surface of what Undertale has under the hood. Once Upon A Time : introduces Main theme (A) Fallen Down Reprise: Main theme (A) used as melody in waltz section. His Theme: introduces his theme (B) Finale: should be placed after Your Best Nightmare, final culmination of Best Friend theme (C) Your Best Friend: introduces Best Friend theme (C) Your Best Nightmare: discovering horror and distress in Best Friend theme (C) Undertale: his theme (B) used as ostinato, main theme (A) used for melody Reunited: Main theme (A) Hopes and Dreams: Main theme (A) Best Friend theme (C) Save the World: Union of (A) and (B) Last Goodbye: Basically an encore for Save the World.
Damn he's just so on point on so many aspects! Says a lot about how well the music is tailored... Hopefully you play this, I'll probably be following the playthrough
Fun fact about the guy who made the music, he also kind of composed the music in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet he also made another game called Deltarune which also has great music
not only is the OST incredible, but it's perfectly tailored to the game it comes from. even without game knowledge you can understand the feelings and movements of the songs, but once you play and experience the situations they're used in? unbeatable
You have already been told that some music is a continuation of the past. But it's also worth considering that the music was designed for games, and it tends to be cyclical. In some places, the music may suddenly stop or you just want it to continue - go to the beginning and start over. everything is calculated
Hopes and Dreams/SAVE the World is my favorite set of tracks by far. Hopes and Dreams is the final boss of a full pacifist game and SAVE the World is both a phase 2 as well as just being a victory lap in and of itself.
There is a good video called ‘All the undertale songs are connected’ which shows how insane Toby went with the leitmotifs

As you said Toby Fox knows all about emotions. Not just the music speaks emotion, not just the creatures in it speaks about emotions, but also the base of the game mechanics is about dealing with emotions.
Undertale OST really makes you go emotional on some of the music
god the Undertale OST is just so good, there are still tracks like Undertale and His theme that still get me emotional to this day. definitely recommend checking out the game seriously. Also funny how Finale, Your best friend, and your best nightmare lined up as finale is supposed to be at the end of those three lol.
"Undertale" will always be my favorite song. It contains all my nostalgia and feelings for this game, I love it.
Hopes and Dreams/Save the World play during the final boss, But here's the thing, it isn't really the boss' theme. It's _yours._
Toby's songs always are a roller-coaster of emotions. You go from happy to nostalgic to sad and back to happy.
He's tearing up and saying "I could never play Undertale if the music alone is this emotional."
And I'm folding my arms and thinking "they played the songs out of order, the experience is ruined forever, goddammit why did you play Finale before Your Best Nightmare, everything is terrible forever"
His theme should be in that group of three
7:02 that bit with the delay or whatever the effect is called caught me SO off guard the first time I listened to this track, because with headphones the surrounding sound gets way deep into your brain
I really have no idea why, but my favorite song from Undertale is Reunited.
I just love it so much.
That and fallen down reprise are bangers
Because it's emotional and a good song obviously.
Man seeing you get choked up got me choked up I went to college starting int 2015 playing Undertale was both the first PC game I played, the first game I owned on my now stuffed Steam account, and the first game I played in college. All because I heard Megalovania in a Smash 4 Shulk combo video.
Same, except I only watched someone play it in college because I saw Papyrus on the thumbnail and thought, "What's with this dumb looking skeleton?"
I 100% recommend playing the game. It's a life-changing experience from the story, to the music. It is beautiful.
35:39 wow, this part really hits hard and I think SAVE the world is definitely one of my favourite themes in the entire soundtrack
Also: I would really recommend listening to the resident evil 4 soundtrack
It makes me feel😢😢
Undertale is just a special game.
Its good to see your reaction to MOST of my favorite songs in the OST (yes most of my favorites are in this video)
His Theme hurts me so bad. Because it’s woven into the entire soundtrack - HE was always there with us. He is the heart of the story, and the only character that can’t be saved.
Man the chrono trigger sound font makes for some beautiful music. In Reunited
"Finale" goes after "Your Best Nightmare"
If you haven't yet, I feel confident that we, as viewers, would be overjoyed to see your playthrough!
Even now listening to these songs are so emotional
I always bite my tongue when hearing his theme
From the very start I can tell this is going to be a good video. "Toby you are Not Allowed to mess with people's feelings like that", that was basically my exact reaction to when the track A CYBER'S WORLD started playing in Deltarune Ch2. I remember out loud saying "Toby no... Toby I can hear you're doing a thing. Toby you can't- (the beat drops) TOBY YOU CAN'T KEEP GETTING AWAY WITH THIS". Every song is just a masterpiece, looking forward to the next 40 minutes where I get to watch someone discover those masterpieces for the first time ^^
These songs always hit me right in the feels. Especially Hopes and Dreams, Undertale and His Theme.
The game just sticks the landing on all fronts. Such a rare phenomenon, and with celebrating.
Toby Fox is an insanely good musical composer, enough said.
When you said "when it repeats, it changes"...
You have no idea how much that phrase encapsulates the whole of Undertale, because there's 4 main paths you take in the game, and to experience it fully, you take all of them.
When it repeats, it changes.
"Toby made 5 songs and remixed them until he got 100"
This is a common phrase used to describe the Undertale OST
You see how good a Soundtrack is, when a composer was surprised by listening just "Once Upon a Time"
This entire game is a masterpiece, nobody is convincing me otherwise.
37:54 its the one year anniversary of my moms death abd idk why, thus exact part has made me start crying.
I thoroughly enjoy your comment. Subbed.
And, despite everything, it's still you.
Yes, we need you to play this game live on stream so we all see your reactions~
"Undertale" is a late-game exposition dump about the tragic backstory of the game that fills in a lot of context just before the final battle.
"yOUr'E NoT aLlOwED bRO"
Now what I think are the main theme missing from deltarune are:
Smart race,
It's pronunced rules,
Chaos King,
Don't forget,
And from Undertale:
Spear of justice,
Heartache,
CORE,
Death by glamour
Determination.
what song is called hopes in dreams well the kind that is about a kid dies to humans after going through a magic seal to put his friends body in the flowers has her last wish before her death to see them but to do that he had to take her soul and come make to life as a flower(your best friend) that can't feel any thing by a the new royal after W. D. Gaster who now never and always is every where though time and space then I kid the play takes his power to save and reset did i say he could do that when he came and only two times he can reset after he become thing plant(your worst nightmare )or the god of hyperdeath (hopes in dreams)and you have two play two times with out killing anyone too even get the true ending of the god of hyperdeath.
bro this man literally SEES the music hes like going with the song then he just says ''ohh the curtains rigth there''
Its wild if you listen to finale after your best nightmare
26:12 that "Amén, hermano" took me so off guard, I wasn't looking at the screen and for some reason that called my attention so much. Probably because I speak Spanish--
also you saying "pacifist vibe" when referring to the boss fight exclusive to playing like a pacifist made me chuckle
Cant wait for Deltarune Ost reaction
that happened before this video 🗿
He ask: "Who is 'him'???"
The game response: It's "you"....
I love this game... Omg....
Your best friend and your best nightmare is flowey
*F L O W E Y. T H E. F L O W E R.*
This last 2 sound track is from the finale boss battle from undertale true pacifist route/run and the asgour (sorry don't know the spelling) theme song is insane as hell and that my favorite one yet
oh, i've got a suggestion besides more deltarune and undertale is the fanmade au themes, the au community is filled with amazing musicians.
all music was in mind for the game
for got to say toby fox did make all the muisic
Loved your analysis and enthusiasm for music! This soundtrack never fails to move me. I had a bad day but your voice combined with the tracks made me feel better 😊 Thank you!
(On a completely unrelated note, this comparison struck me and now I can't unhear it: you sound very, very similar to the Mega-rich Light-bending guy from Disco Elysium! 😂)
If you check the files, “Once Upon A Time” is the first song in the OST, and “Good Night” is the last one. The whole game is just a bedtime story.
The song "his theme" refers to ASREAL, and "him" as one who shouldn't be spoken of much
Hopes and dreams is the boss battle between you and ASREAL Dreemer
Yup.
*AS REAL as it gets* 😉
Asreal sounds like a name for a different person tbh
Once Upon A Time : introduces Main theme (A)
Fallen Down Reprise: Main theme (A) used as melody in waltz section.
His Theme: introduces his theme (B)
Finale: should be placed after Your Best Nightmare, final culmination of Best Friend theme (C)
Your Best Friend: introduces Best Friend theme (C)
Your Best Nightmare: discovering horror and distress in Best Friend theme (C)
Undertale: his theme (B) used as ostinato, main theme (A) used for melody
Reunited: Main theme (A)
Hopes and Dreams: Main theme (A) Best Friend theme (C)
Save the World: Union of (A) and (B)
Last Goodbye: Basically an encore for Save the World.
Damn he's just so on point on so many aspects! Says a lot about how well the music is tailored... Hopefully you play this, I'll probably be following the playthrough
Welp there goes the first experience on your best nightmare and finale and i doubt he will do it again
Fun fact about the guy who made the music, he also kind of composed the music in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet he also made another game called Deltarune which also has great music
"sounds like some kind of ambulance" LOL
Sad tracks
-His theme
-An Ending
-Undertale
not only is the OST incredible, but it's perfectly tailored to the game it comes from. even without game knowledge you can understand the feelings and movements of the songs, but once you play and experience the situations they're used in?
unbeatable
Finale has always been a sleeper fav of mine, especially combined with listening to it directly after Your Best Nightmare!
You have already been told that some music is a continuation of the past.
But it's also worth considering that the music was designed for games, and it tends to be cyclical. In some places, the music may suddenly stop or you just want it to continue - go to the beginning and start over. everything is calculated
bro I was expecting "Megalovania"🫤🫤
Hopes and Dreams/SAVE the World is my favorite set of tracks by far. Hopes and Dreams is the final boss of a full pacifist game and SAVE the World is both a phase 2 as well as just being a victory lap in and of itself.
If you will be reacting to Genocide music please listen to "In my way"
Bro if you think this soundtrack is a tear-jerker now just wait until you have context from the story.
