Toby Fox loves writing music so much, he actually finished the entire score for this game (and a large chunk of the score for the (at the time possibly not even happening) sequel) before finishing any other part of it!

Well technically For the Fans is a remix of Oh! My One True Love, which is the part that has the lyrics, not after mettaton NEO’s battle, but I understand, it can be confusing because they both sound very similar.
What makes this soundtrack absolutely amazing is the references in the melodies. This soundtrack is a great example of leitmotifs, and just to explain what that means to those who may not know, it is a recurrent theme or themes throughout a musical piece. For instance, the beginning of 'Heartache' can be heard in 'Asgore's Theme' because of the relationship between the two characters. In 'Hopes and Dreams', you can hear references from 'Once Upon a Time'. I could go on and on about the many references that are in each song. That explains why you hear the same melody in different songs, but in a different rhythmic pattern. Anyways, 'Undertale' and 'His Theme' are my absolute favorite because they aren't intense like the battle songs, but evokes a different emotion and tells a story within the pieces. Each character, location, and event all have their own songs, ranging from slow and calm to absolutely intense and fast-tempo. I'm glad you did a reaction video to this because it shows that this soundtrack...a video game soundtrack...is one of the best things I've ever heard. One last thing, don't forget the hugs for goat bro and goat mom! Thank you and take care!
Yes. And one thing I did not discuss is that Megalovania could also be seen as a variation on the first theme. Think about it, the descending base line in the melody...
@@MusicTheoryforGamers Megalovania is actually the only song who doesn’t have references in melodies from the game because Toby Fox originally created the melody for his Earthbound Halloween hack in 2008.
@@pillowcaseee He could derive the same themes from Megalovania. There are also hints of Papyrus' leitmotif in Megalovania because of the characters' relationship. Edit: Sorry I think the leitmotif is only in "Song that might play when you fight sans" but still it is derived from Megalovania so yea there's still a connection.
My favourite Undertale fun fact. Obviously Toby loves his leitmotifs, and almost every song connects to the first few you hear. But the most iconic song, Megalovania, is Completely independent… except for a very small bit of “bring it in guys”. in the middle of the Papyrus theme he sneaks in a little bit of Megalovania (1:45:14) The song is definitely hidden to hide that a fight with sans Even exists, even having the fake “song that might play when you fight sans” in the official soundtrack to trick you into thinking thats the fight music. (although the internet quickly ruined that idea when the game blew up, and the secret route became the most famous)
There's a theory that Megalovania is the players theme since sans has the first turn, and the existence of the unused "song that might play when you fight sans" matches that
So, Idk why Toby put it in Undertale to begin with, but the first reason for it to actually be completely different would in fact be that it was made for the Earthbound Halloween mod that Toby made first, before it got a Homestuck and an Undertale version (whatever the order between these two are).
@@clemente3966 Homestuck first, Undertale after. Megalovania seems to almost be like his "watermark", in a way.... It evolves as his musical writing skills evolve. I'm hoping he ends up bringing it into Deltarune tbh, in some way at least.
@@hasargel i always thought that too because when a monster approaches you, their theme plays. You are not even considered a human at this point, so it could work like that. Also, Megalovania means something to do with being obsessed with power, which is what you are at this point. And finally, there are no leitmotifs from any other monsters theme, signifying that you do not belong in this world.
@@ToyotaCoronx Well, Megalovania is a riff on the word "megalomania" which means "obsession with one's own power" It certainly is fitting if it were the player's theme
never realized until now that they turned "Small Shock" into a duet between a cello and a violin, playing the "Asgore" and "Undertale" leitmotifs....just Asgore and Frisk staring each other down in sadness before the final fight. GOD. DAMN.
I think the sound that plays when most of the musicians leave is the “Void” sound, a track that’s not on the official soundtrack, I think because it’s technically just a sound effect. But it plays after a Genocide Run is completed. It’s supposed to be a bit eery. Fitting considering what happens when you finish the game that way... since you asked what’s going on in the story at this point, this will be a spoiler, and a pretty heavy one at that, so for anyone who chooses to read on, you’ve been warned: There’s a character that is referenced throughout the game, but only appears at the end of a Genocide Run, a long-deceased child named Chara. One way or another, whether by surrendering it to them willingly or refusing and getting killed by them as a result, they take possession of the player character’s soul (which has the crazy power to manipulate time and the world of the game itself) and use it to “erase” the game/world. At that point, this “Void” sound plays and future attempts to start up the game after this behave as if Chara “rebuilt” the game with all the player character’s SAVE data erased, which is why the two remaining musicians play the basic version of the menu theme after the Void sound is done. Not everything the player did is erased, though, because Chara haunts the player no matter what you do from then onwards, even if you attempt to do a True Pacifist run again. Chara’s present in every ending after a complete Genocide Run, implying that they intend to continue wreaking havoc no matter what you do or how cooperative you choose to be with their wish to erase everything. For appearing to be like a game for children, the story does get pretty dark. Needless to say, Chara’s a murderous psychopath. Chara flat out states that while the player character may have made the choice to start killing, they chose to make it more enticing, stating that they’re the embodiment of the feeling you get when a number increases, and the addictive quality of that feeling for the player character in this story. They’re purpose in the story serves as a way to explain the enticing nature of level ups for people who have played RPGs before, and what drives players to want to fight and kill things. Some meta-storytelling, if you will. So yeah, in addition to having a great understanding of music, Toby Fox has a tremendous understanding of gaming as a medium, in addition to how people think about games outside of whatever story they may be playing. As for a little personal commentary, even though Megalovania is amazing to listen to, I can’t do the Genocide Run myself, certainly not just to hear it play in-game. The True Pacifist run’s ending is too perfect to taint it with the presence of a demon child later on. If there’s one side of Undertale’s story that I really wouldn’t want to spoil for anyone, it’s the Pacifist side of the story. The Genocide Run is supposed to not be fun, and most people figure that out after starting it and learning what is required to complete it. The sort of ending you get is kind of a foregone conclusion at that point, and because of that I personally don’t mind spoiling it too much, though the fact that a player who completes a Genocide Run still has to face the appropriate consequences for their actions is rather poignant and good storytelling. But for me, it’s not worth ruining the story for future runs, especially when I care about all the characters in the story enough to want the best for them all and see things work out for them. Needless to say, the Pacifist Run has a great story I don’t want to spoil. It’s really good and worth experiencing first hand, if you’re able.
@@i_am_anxious02 that's because it just isn't worth the trouble to get all toxic over whatever people may believe. If you want to believe Chara is evil, it's fine as long as you respect people who think Chara is innocent too. I'm personally more into the Chara is good (although very flawed) theory, but I won't disrespect people who think Chara is evil. Everyone is allowed to believe whatever they want after all.
@@UndernetChara I fully agree. My point was that plenty of people still ARE in a way where they are extreme about one position, and I'm surprised none of those people have shown themselves.
I fully agree - amaizing OST. Even tho the arrangement wasn't made by Toby Fox himself, he still wrote the score. An amazing score at that. It's a pitty, they didn't include whole OST, but i can understand that - it would be too time consuming and also quite a few pieces are just a variation of each other. They probably decided that main theme repeating in many variations already enough. Also, have a question - how often main violin have replacement violin near him\her? I don't think i ever saw that in concerts in the past.
The HERE WE ARE music is supossed to be ominous and kinda scary Even though there no danger who would reach how the music fells... The enemys are just scary as FUCK But the lore... And the single line... "The flower is gone" Ahahahahah I loved
Heya Dan. Couldn't help but notice that you missed Toby's own performance at the end of the video. It isn't shown like the concert is, but Toby himself actually performed 3 of his songs on the piano, with a damaged wrist no less. It's not perfect piano playing, but it manages. I urge you to take a look at it.
Toby has always had issues in his wrist, it's a chronic thing which is also the main bottleneck of Deltarune's development, since he's the one that writes all the dialogues Apparently it can be fixed with surgery tho? can't remember what he said about it
love how they started playing Hopes and dreams, the atmosphere itself just becomes so energetic that the players themselves are trying hard to not jam with that.
Absolutely loved watching your reactions. You can tell how much you're getting into the music just by your expressions and it was an absolute joy to watch. First time i've seen your videos and I'll definitely watch more!
I fully agree with your critique about the rhythm throughout the whole concert, there are definitely sections scattered about where the not every part of the orchestra is on tempo with one another (very prevalent in Megalovania and Battle Against a True Hero) but like you said, the actual quality of the music itself is too good where it doesn't become that big of a hinderance
if you went back to 2009 and told Toby Fox that the cool little song he wrote for his Earthbound ROM hack was going to be played by an orchestra 11 years later he wouldn't have believed you
If you went back two weeks and told me you would be commenting and supporting this video I might now have believed either! Thank you so much for your support!
Came from stumbling across your Undertale soundtrack review, was overjoyed when I saw you did the concert too! The concert is stunning, and I've watched it though several times. I loved how both here and in the OST I could go "oh he'll love this part" and be correct, despite the fact that I play piano and not guitar. This whole concert puts a massive grin on my face. Thank you for reacting, and I highly recommend you play it if you haven't already, connecting this music to the characters and story really solidifies everything! :)
Finally listened to all of your Undertale/Deltarune OST reaction vids! I’m just a humble violin player, so your more thorough insights into the music theory/composition/arrangement side of things are extremely interesting to me.
Small thing I appreciate from you that makes me love coming back to your reactions is that you rarely pause the music in the middle of the song to explain stuff. So many other musician RUclipsrs that react to video game OSTs do this very frequently and don't fully appreciate songs in their entirety from start to finish. You only do it very few times, and even when you do, I really don't mind it much because you keep it brief and you say very interesting and helpful things too rather than take up full minutes talking while in the middle of a song. Keep it up, Dan. 👍
When it comes to leitmotives Undertale is a wonderfull example of that. There are only 9 tracks in the original Soundtrack that dont share a Leitmotiv with another Song. The use of these motives is in most cases fitting to the scenario the Song is playing, so toby thought about when to use which. Or he just combined his 9 random leitmotives and it just fit. Either way, amazing Soundtrack. When you Listen to it, you could try to hear every leitmotive and why it was used in that scenario.
This was very interesting as I guess it was my first time seeing someone react to an entire video game ost (that is an orchestral arrangement of it, but still). One thing I did see you get a bit confused with were the different themes and leitmotifs that keep popping up. Like there were a whole range of themes you considered "the first one" even if they never played in the first song (Once Upon a Time). I understand that at the end of the day it's subjective, but as someone who has probably listened to the entire ost at least a hundred times, to the point that I can basically memorise many of them down to the note, I thought I might help in listing the main recurring themes. Some of them are similar, but can be distinguished based on the context of the song in the game (which I believe you have not played?). Also, this channel seems really cool, considering subscribing. * god i love the off-beat feel in the background of "nyeh heh heh" and bonetrousle. gives a wonderful, desperate but organized, confident but silly tone to the music and it's amazing. papyrus is so cool.
Every theme variation: "I think we can call this a variation of the first theme" I think this speaks to the nostalgia factor of the themes that you hear every character's theme as the one you've known the longest. I hope you play the game, even if it's on your own time, so you can match themes to characters and further that relationship with the music.
I could go on for hours about how much I love Undertale's music, how it makes me feel oddly nostalgic despite not being that old, how the music itself makes me feel a whole range of emotions on it's own, how I can easily identify the story through the game's music as well as what the music is trying to communicate... Toby Fox was self-taught when it came to music, he was more well-known for his compositions than anything else before Undertale, and he also admitted that he creates a character after he created their theme (at least for Deltarune, not sure if that was the case for Undertale), so clearly, music plays a big part in Undertale's story and overall presentation. That might be why I see jokes and memes about how even if people will admit Undertale isn't a perfect game or how they're find with people crapping on the game, they get REALLY defensive and angry if people diss the soundtrack. People say it's "banger after banger", but I like that Undertale has a full range of various kinds of music, each for it's own unique situation. They're all great in their own way, even if I do have my favorites. If nothing else, I hope more people come to appreciate Toby Fox's music. Edit: 2:00:54 "And when are they gonna come back? Are the gonna come back?" ... ... ... But nobody came.
"Your Best Nightmare" is one of my favorite songs. It's so good. It has so much energy to it and I question how instruments can even make some of the sounds in it. I also really like how distorted it is in some places, it's not easy to make distorted sounds sound good, but man did he pull it off!
Love your videos and Undertale is one of my favorite games of all time, great reaction! Keep up the good work man! I’m a musician myself and I play the trombone, I’ve been playing since I was 7 years old. Love your stuff!

If you pay close attention when you listen to the soundtrack, you can spot a few melodies that Toby retooled from earlier songs
Amazing soundtrack and i loved the reaction! Especially the little details, telling what is happenning! I will need to wake up early tomorrow, but couldn't stop the listening! Love Undertale for what it created.
2:00:18 - That windy sound is what plays after the player beats the genocide ending of the game and tries to reopen the game after it closes, indicating that the player has destroyed everything and there is nothing to go back to. This wind sound plays on black screen for 10 minutes before something happens.
The part where they're tuning at like 44:00 sounds like the PS3 start up. Thanks for reacting to this whole thing man, nice to feel like I'm watching with someone who's as into the music as I am ☺️
I am EXTREMLEY late to the party but just wanted to point out they did the transitions into the songs very well, so well in fact that when I was zoning out having this play on a second monitor I didn't even realize they already finished Metal Crusher and were playing the intro into Spider Dance until the melody actually dropped at 48:40. Fantastic stuff.
On September 15, 2020, I spent the day wishing I could do something special to celebrate Undertale’s anniversary. That evening I started the concert, figuring it would be good but not great. The concert was fantastic from beginning to end, and it was the highlight of my day. I loved every orchestral arrangement, but one of my favorites was Small Shock. It’s a nice quiet moment that contains both hope and sadness. Also, I always get chills after the pacifist run, when the full game menu theme suddenly transitions into the dark genocide opening-complete with mournful bits of Toriel and Papyrus’s themes to mark their deaths. Anyway, I loved your reaction to this wonderful concert! Thanks!!
Every time one of the songs ended where it should’ve had a beat drop but didn’t because it was supposed to be looped you looked like you died inside it was really funny
I LOVE the trombone melody that’s playing in asgore, it’s this beautiful bass line that you barely hear in the original track but here it’s given its moment to shine
this whole concert makes me imagine a zelda movie using all this music with some zelda motifs but its either animated in old style disney style or in an old timey cozy anime style
I doubt you had an order in mind when you listed all of the things Toby had to do when designing Undertale, but I just want to point out that he's always been a musician first, and a designer later. He had the concepts for the game, then made the music, then created the characters based off the music he created. The more impressive thing is how he created the game as someone who knew nothing of coding or game design, and how the designs came through some concepts and his music. It's really nice he's actually getting help with Deltarune now. It allows him to shape the game in the image he wants and put more of his focus onto making the music top notch.
In “Your Best Nightmare”, those transitions where the person rubs against that piece of whatever it is (im not sure) is meant to be the sound of TV static
If people haven’t told you already, there’s a few songs that Toby played way after the actual concert that are really nice to hear. Anyways this was a good video!
9:10 God I love the brass here 10:10 YES EXACTLY You get it! I've always been a sucker for huge brass hits over sweeping strings. It just gets me every time. It's why Matt Smith's Doctor Who seasons had the best theme song, imo
A bunch of the music in Undertale is usually reused music, but either reversed, slowed down, remixed, or revamped. Usually, when it's a theme used for nobel characters or a team have the same themes, but it's still different
1. Personally, my favorite is ASGORE 2. I am delighted that you found this and made a reaction video. It is Great! And for Undertale the musical too! I am totally subscribing for that! :D
Since you’ve listened to Undertale, maybe you can check out the Deltarune soundtrack, it’s really good too! My personal favorites are “Field of Hopes and Dreams” and “The world revolving”

Doesn’t it though? The descending notes in the melody show up in Megalovania. Themes and variations.
@@MusicTheoryforGamersYes, but I don’t think its intentional, because he first created the song in 2002.
Can’t believe you put “Nyeh heh heh!” In the description, love that! 🤗 Papyrus is the wholesome bean. 😌
Thank you for noticing and for your support! Rock on!!!
My favourite Undertale fun fact. Obviously Toby loves his leitmotifs, and almost every song connects to the first few you hear. But the most iconic song, Megalovania, is Completely independent… except for a very small bit of “bring it in guys”. in the middle of the Papyrus theme he sneaks in a little bit of Megalovania (1:45:14)
The song is definitely hidden to hide that a fight with sans Even exists, even having the fake “song that might play when you fight sans” in the official soundtrack to trick you into thinking thats the fight music.
@@hasargel i always thought that too
because when a monster approaches you, their theme plays. You are not even considered a human at this point, so it could work like that. Also, Megalovania means something to do with being obsessed with power, which is what you are at this point. And finally, there are no leitmotifs from any other monsters theme, signifying that you do not belong in this world.
@@ToyotaCoronx Well, Megalovania is a riff on the word "megalomania" which means "obsession with one's own power"
It certainly is fitting if it were the player's theme
never realized until now that they turned "Small Shock" into a duet between a cello and a violin, playing the "Asgore" and "Undertale" leitmotifs....just Asgore and Frisk staring each other down in sadness before the final fight. GOD. DAMN.

I think the sound that plays when most of the musicians leave is the “Void” sound, a track that’s not on the official soundtrack, I think because it’s technically just a sound effect. But it plays after a Genocide Run is completed. It’s supposed to be a bit eery. Fitting considering what happens when you finish the game that way... since you asked what’s going on in the story at this point, this will be a spoiler, and a pretty heavy one at that, so for anyone who chooses to read on, you’ve been warned:
There’s a character that is referenced throughout the game, but only appears at the end of a Genocide Run, a long-deceased child named Chara.
Wow. Thank you so much for sharing! This is a great summary and with a personal touch. Thanks for the explanation!

I am incredibly shocked no one has said that chara isn't evil given yet given how many people believe so and how many people are livid about it
@@i_am_anxious02 that's because it just isn't worth the trouble to get all toxic over whatever people may believe.
Personally the synths and stuff he uses is even better

Heya Dan. Couldn't help but notice that you missed Toby's own performance at the end of the video. It isn't shown like the concert is, but Toby himself actually performed 3 of his songs on the piano, with a damaged wrist no less. It's not perfect piano playing, but it manages. On it!!!! Thank you Warren.
Toby has always had issues in his wrist, it's a chronic thing which is also the main bottleneck of Deltarune's development, since he's the one that writes all the dialogues

love how they started playing Hopes and dreams, the atmosphere itself just becomes so energetic that the players themselves are trying hard to not jam with that.

You can’t help but clap at a shamisen! Thanks for listening!

Heck yeah, I never actually got round to watching this. Can't wait to see you listen the soundtrack as it was in-game later this week
Every theme variation: "I think we can call this a variation of the first theme"
I think this speaks to the nostalgia factor of the themes that you hear every character's theme as the one you've known the longest.

Thanks!!
You can’t experience a full genocide route in only 7 minutes!
Me, an intelectual: 1:53:36 - 2:00:06
Nah you need to experience the slow versions of the themes, and as I like to call it: the genocide theme: slowed down enemy approaching
Every time one of the songs ended where it should’ve had a beat drop but didn’t because it was supposed to be looped you looked like you died inside it was really funny
The credits section was out of this world.
Totally! the credit part is awesome!
I just love the concert, thanks for reacting to it
Genuinely some of the best music I've heard in my life. Videos game tracks are massively underrated
Your smile kinda scares me because of how wide it is... x')
Always a bliss to listen to this concert.
legend bro, I hope u react to undertale's full and original collection of soundtracks ^__^
On it!
A little bit sad they didn't use the electric guitar for Hopes and Dreams.
Can you react to the actual OST itself sometime? They skipped some songs in this orchestra.
Yes! Yes I can. Thanks!
@@MusicTheoryforGamers thanks
@@MusicTheoryforGamers that would be awsome
@@MusicTheoryforGamers nice
I LOVE the trombone melody that’s playing in asgore, it’s this beautiful bass line that you barely hear in the original track but here it’s given its moment to shine
"For fans" outside of context - beautiful and very pretty
In context - IT'LL SUCK
I love how they kinda extended the intro to Heartache to really give it lots of buildup, it's perfect.
this whole concert makes me imagine a zelda movie using all this music with some zelda motifs but its either animated in old style disney style or in an old timey cozy anime style
A Zelda film directed by Miyazaki as a co-production between Kyoto Animation and Studio Ghibli would go so hard
@@thecosmichiroshi YEAH thats kinda what i was thinkin studio ghibli
I doubt you had an order in mind when you listed all of the things Toby had to do when designing Undertale, but I just want to point out that he's always been a musician first, and a designer later.
He had the concepts for the game, then made the music, then created the characters based off the music he created. The more impressive thing is how he created the game as someone who knew nothing of coding or game design, and how the designs came through some concepts and his music.
It's really nice he's actually getting help with Deltarune now. It allows him to shape the game in the image he wants and put more of his focus onto making the music top notch.
I was so suprised they did amalgam cuz it's one of my favorite songs in the game.
In “Your Best Nightmare”, those transitions where the person rubs against that piece of whatever it is (im not sure) is meant to be the sound of TV static
I think its sandpaper
Shout out to the lady rubbing sandpaper all through the flowey music XD
Idk why but "stay tuned" felt like a pun even though it probably wasn't and I just couldn't stop thinking about it
He listening "ASGORE" : 😐
He when "Your best Nightmare" kicks in: 😃
I swear, this guy has the greatest smile I have ever seen
right
If people haven’t told you already, there’s a few songs that Toby played way after the actual concert that are really nice to hear. Anyways this was a good video!
9:10
God I love the brass here
10:10
YES
EXACTLY
You get it!
Usually, when it's a theme used for nobel characters or a team have the same themes, but it's still different
man just imagine being toby fox hearing this and having this great of an honor
Of COURSE Sans' theme has a cowbell. Why wouldn't it? I love it!
Bonetrousle and Spider dance are such silly goofy little songs i love them
Woahhh I didn't know you listened to this!!!, I will for sure watch all of it now :D
I love Amalgam in this (1:20:45). With the use of the earthbound sound font in the game it's so fun to hear a orchestrated version of it.
i love this guys smile
1. Personally, my favorite is ASGORE
2. I am delighted that you found this and made a reaction video. It is Great! And for Undertale the musical too! I am totally subscribing for that! :D
When everyone left and you could only hear wind, that was because the genocide run was a success, if you know what I mean.
You looked so full of determination during ASGORE.
Your Best Nightmare is scary and intimidating.
I love it.
*a small white dog is attempting to conduct an entire orchestra.
*it seems to be doing quite well, especially considering it's not doing anything.
1:31:56 was my all time favorite in the concert. when i listened to it for the first time i instantly started sobbing
This performance is a masterpiece, and seeing a master of music react to it is great! Also 500th
I love how hes just vibin 👌🏼✨
Since you’ve listened to Undertale, maybe you can check out the Deltarune soundtrack, it’s really good too! My personal favorites are “Field of Hopes and Dreams” and “The world revolving”
A cybers world and big shot are my personal favorites as of right now.
