I feel a very underrated scene is if you do multiple genocide routes in a row, even Chara, the very character who guides you through the genocide route, will call you out, telling you to do something else
"do you think even the worst person can change? that everyone can be a good person, if they just try?" Sans is more reminding you about his brother. Because that's exactly what Papyrus said you could do. That's why Sans humorlessly laughs after. He's probably feeling defeated by how niave his brother truly was for thinking the best of you. But he isn't going to let you forget him either.
I choose to view it more as hopeful. He knows in this time line you are too far gone, but maybe he can convince you to feel love in the others you inevitably start. Sans found kinship with Toriel, maybe Papyrus could do the same for you in another life, which in all honesty he does in the Pacifist Route.
Honestly this phrase helps me with my mental health. It's a reminder that even if I spiraled harder than ever, I could still become a good person. It's a reminder that even the worst of humanity are deserving of a chance if they're willing to seek it. And it's a reminder for me to be optimistic. I DO believe the worst person can change. I DO believe that everyone and anyone is capable of being a good person, if they truly try. And sans himself is a reminder too. If a skeleton damned to repeat the same tragic and/or pointless paths can still find any humor or joy...then I can too.
I think it's more self-condescending than that. instead of his brother, he's the one who kept believing that you could change which is why he didn't step in earlier, and he's regretting his own nativity.
Fun fact: that final attack at the very end that crashes the game was originally supposed to completely delete the game from your device, but Toby couldn't figure out how to do it
@@maxwellmegagamer8535 I mean, if we throw out your operating systems structural integrity... then it'll probably be recognized as a virus.... but there is a chance
@@TotallyStatue Well. The game could create an executeable file to do that job in you temp directory, execute it in a new thread and closing the current programm (the game). The game would be effectivly deleted with only an executeable temp file. The problem is that uninstalling or changing software always asks for the permission to do it - so it could not be done without your consent. But the tought of the game closing and seeing the windows security question if you want to deinstall "undertale" would have been effective nontheless.
But he doesn’t have a glowing eye But his counter part swap has an orange glowing eye same with disbelief so maybe disbelief papyrus glowing eye = bravery?
I think this is pretty much a aesthetic thing because pretty much every color got a soul(imagine how ugly would be sans brown eye) still, that would be a cool reference.
the 'you'd be dead where you stand' quote can also be taken in another way, as without sans's promise to PROTECT over you, the other monsters wouldn't have been so nice in snowdin, or you may not have made it through other areas without him helping, such as when he stalks you in in waterfall during the genocide route (check the unique shyren concert text in genocide), implying that he could have helped us during pacifist and neutral through practically all areas.
A small headcanon I have for one instance of sans helping the player I got from a fan comic which showed sans secretly helping frisk get over the giant bone in the papyrus pacifist fight through the whole blue soul thing, ik nothing is confirmed but I like to believe that was him
@@most_sour_of_citruses that sounds completely in character, also with the fact that papyrus may not have enough mastery over the blue soul mode to be able to raise the battle box and lessen the gravity of the soul just enough to avoid his attack.
My headcanon is that Sans' prescence might have been the only reason why Flowey didn't try attacking you a lot more times. Whether knowingly or not, he acts as a deterrent to keep the weed away from you.
@@kingofcrap4414yeah that checks, it’s canon that flowey is afraid of sans because it was sans’s fault that flowey could never finish a genocide route of his own as hard as he may have tried. Sans did to flowey what he failed to do to the player and that was make him give up and the reason for that is unlike undyne who is all brute strength in an attempt to kill you. Sans isn’t trying to kill you and he isn’t even trying to “win” he just wants to break your will and force you to ragequit which he succeeded in doing to flowey.
15:34 I don't think saying "you're beyond forgiveness" and "he has to play dirty like this" is the right interpretation here. Afterall, tricks only work once, and since he knows we always come back after dying, dirty tricks won't do much. The only way sans can make player give up is by being so hard you just quit, not by pulling dirty tricks like Sparing him. The next line is the most important one, "if we're really friends, you won't come back". He does the opposite of making you quit out of frustration, he wants you to quit out of any feelings that may be left inside you. The same way how Papyrus wants you to "quit", albeit in a different way. He doesn't know if you won't just lie to him and continue on your murderous spree. But if you're truly sorry, you're gonna quit, and if you're truly His Friend(™), you won't come back. I believe saying he just has to "play dirty like this" is a vast oversimplification of a moment that is genuinely heartfelt.
What I meant by playing dirty is that he simply bypasses a lot of the rules of the game that work in your favor. For example, invincibility frames, which give you a bunch of time after getting hit to get out of there. By the established laws of Undertale, he should have invincibility frames too, but he just sort of... doesn't, which is why I call it "cheating." And yeah, it's an oversimplification, but the video is already 35 minutes long, I didn't want it to be an hour. I had to leave some stuff out or we would be here for ages. You're correct, though.
@@thehayze259 You've made the point about playing dirty a few times more in the video, when mentioning stuff like attacking in menu, or frame damaging attacks. Whcih is why I felt mentioning it another time in a moment that has more heartfelt undertones, is an oversimplification that kinda hurts the entire video's quality. Or maybe it just rubbed me the wrong way, cause I felt it to be one of the more important scenes in the entire fight. If you didn't want to get in details for that scene, then that's fine, but I think it'd be better if you skipped it altogether, rather than list it as yet another instance of sans playing dirty.
If the KR does stand for karma then it makes sans even more deep. Because, he could of tried to stop you before you killed everyone but maybe he couldn’t. Maybe his attacks are only powerful enough to harm you once you reach level 19
@@kuba4ful It could be both, though. Sans is intentionally disceiving the player by making them think he is sparable, making the player think that sparing him might give a different ending or even just new dialogue and punishing that curiosity with a game over (which is sort of the genocide route in a nutshell - the game is saying you've already seen the best it has to offer and that you should move on now). Sans does then take the opportunity to plead with the player on the grounds of their past friendship (after a little deserved taunting), but I think his initial intent is a simple attempt at tricking the player to make sure they keep losing as long as possible and get discouraged enough to quit.
Some notes that Hayze didn't touch upon: Sans does 1 damage per frame and dodges every hit despite having 1 hp. The player likely has equipped the Real Knife and HeartLocket, each of which are the best armor and weapon in the game in terms of STATS, but no benefits like the BurntPan or TornNotebook. ATK and DEF don't matter anymore, because you can't HIT him and he doesn't do more than the minimum possible damage. Sans goes first because in most fights, you engage the opponent. Your turn is always first because either they cede their turn to you or you fight them before they know you're there. Note most enemies having the "[Enemy] stumbled in!" or some variety of that, implying they didn't see you coming until you were there- most don't even know you're a human. Undyne turns you green with her first attack. Sans doesn't cede his turn or waste it. The reason sans goes first is because you don't fight sans. Sans fights you. This also might be why Megalovania is used instead of TSTMPWYFS, as you don't fight sans. Megalovania is a portmanteau of Transylvania and Megalomania, which could imply it's your theme attempting to overtake his. Red is (almost) the only color in the game that appears on monster models directly. (Flowey doesn't count.) Sans' blood is red, your SOUL is red, ASGORE's trident is red. Each of these characters have a reason to be determined to kill you- (UNDYNE's Determination is inside her- dunno what to think about that.) Sans performs a betrayal kill, which is a nice touch since that's how you killed Papyrus, and the act of SPAREing one turn and attacking the next is also how you can pass Toriel quickly in the RUINs on neutral. Sans is tied to JUSTICE and PATIENCE via his eye colors, the only non-red colors on enemy monsters in the entire game.
i think megalovania originates from megalomania and LOVE, since you're craving more power (meaning you're a megalomaniac) and you plan to get it by increasing your LOVE
@@iasked347 "The Song That Might Play When You Fight Sans" is a music track in the game's files that was never used - all we have for context is the name, and listening to the actual music of course.
19:27 Interestingly enough, he seems to also be friends with Alphys, he hints to it ALL throughout the game(even sending dog food and JOKING about it, we know what that means), his, as he says THEIR research (with likely Alphys) is seemingly what led him to become aware that his choices don't matter(along maybe with Gaster but that's an even more theory zone), Alphys even jinxed his joke once lol.
Yep @@Elaniden I just finished watching Symblily's pacifist run and Papyrus comments on it! And Alphys shrugs it off, but omg how did I never know those two knew each other before Frisk!?
Sans' mercy trick is another thematically appropriate part of the fight in its own right. I don't know about the regular enemies, but the bosses at least, have different death scenes if you play the fights through as if in pacifist until you're able to spare them, and _then_ kill them.
You forgot to mention soulless pacifist being an attempt of fixing your mistake fueled by the regret of your genocide run only to be met by chara and the last photo depicting the death of all your friends and family showing that the damage has already been done and your sins will not be forgiven.
What I genuinely love in this fight is that technically all of these rules in the battle are totally legal because of other examples of the game it also references many other characters for example, (oh boy this going to be long) papyrus is one of the few fights where the box moves when you move, on the last attack when you jump so high the box itself has to expand just to keep you visible. Asriel is the only character that does damage without really any i frames, they are much shorter in his final attack, Asgore upgrades his attacks as the fight goes on, which is what Sans does overtime. Sans is able to kill you with the spare mechanic because betrayal kills are a hidden game mechanic where if an enemy is spare able, you kill them in one hit. Flowey attacks you even when you’re healing or fighting him in the omega fight. Even with the new rules, the original rules still apply somewhat. Sans cancel attacks and chain them together because he stuns you slightly with the teleport, if you want to be serious, you do this too later when you kill Flowey as you stun him on the first hit as he’s not entirely dead. Then you keep killing him afterwards as he can’t act. The fact that Sans can do all of this and it all feels somewhat familiar makes it go even further.
And since attacking normally sends you back into the battle box after you finish, it lets you attack a second time while hovering over it, because you never left the box in the first place
Undertale constantly break the classic RPG rules, like when Papyrus literally go off the path after sparing him, or when you decrease the fake health bar of Napstablook
thats always been my favorite part of the fight. any other time you interact with him, hes always putting on a front. this nonchalant demeanor. but that moment is the _one_ time he gets angry enough to not care about putting it up. and, it makes me feel like a bit of an asshole to say this lol, but its so interesting. this whole fight is proof he cares way more than he acts like he does and i love it.
Great video! I also believe that one of the reasons the fight is so popular is because of its buildup. In the pacifist route, Sans initially appears as a comic relief character, but he has moments that make you think, 'there's more to this guy.' The more you play the game, the more you begin to notice these things. Even Flowey, in one of the neutral endings, warns you about Sans lol And the best part is that the fight makes you wonder about Sans, 'why does he know about resets?' 'How is he able to do all of that?' 'Why is he somewhat different?' There's a lot that you can dive into with this guy
@@willzhang1936 "papyrus's brother however... don't mess with him. He's caused me more trouble than my fare share of resets. " im pretty sure flowey said smtn like that
@abitsillyy I used to think it was nice, but then I saw videos and rewatched parts over the year. I realized it has lots of flaws. Its fine if you like it though. Everyone has a different opinion on this.
23:50 Yes, I fully agree with you. Having the colour of red being the colour of importance in Sans’ fight once it’s over is a really clever symbolism in my opinion. Along with his sprite sweating when he goes all-out on the player on his last attempt to kill us. I say this because, making a skeleton bleed, (which would be near impossible without him having weak bones, due to a lack of calcium in the marrow), is a clever metaphor to show us the player, how we’ve lost all humanity within ourselves as people in their world. And how Sans, a literal skeleton is more human then we are. And compared to how we were in the other endings, Eg: The True Pacifist ending. Furthermore, I personally see this as a clever homage to remind us of all of the opportunities that we could’ve ended our genocide, Eg: Papyrus, and his “Hug of acceptance” to stop our massacre of the underground. To further my points, The game has subtly warned us *multiple times* that we were losing what humanity we had left at those points of the story. More ‘homages’ being quotes like Eg: “Human, No. Whatever you are. I Undyne, WILL Strike you Down.” “Oh, you Ugly *Creature*.”-Mettaton, in the genocide ending. And also, “Y-You have a sick sense of humour.” And, “Stop making that Creepy face!” Those last two quotes coming from Flowey, a soulless; emotionless, Apathetic, miserable creature. Now Shaking in his fear of our lack of humanity. And inhuman behaviour. As I said before, *Flowey.* Of all people. Said those lines of dialogue In our encounter with him, trying to reason with us, not just for his life, but for the future of Every timeline in the future. We have that “encounter” with him, just before we poetically meet Sans in the Final Corridoor. The Final warning, in the final corridor, before everything ends in mutually assured destruction. As a final point to my essay, I personally believe that the section of the game, from when we first enter Asgore’s house in new home, to the point where Sans leaves, and dies is meant to be the final warning to get us, the player to stop with our genocide. This section of the story is meant to be a bone shattering experience for us to suffer through. To try and get us to stop before *We All lose it all.* It’s poetic writing, We get warned about the consequences, unforeseen at the time we’re given them. But through it all. Through *Our* Determination. We go through and “Proceed”. To quote Chara, “It was Not My determination, But *Yours*.” -Chara I do apologise if I got off topic when writing this essay for you. And, I Thank you for having the patience to read my essay.
Oh yeah. The actual fight with Sans is awesome, but man... the moment you enter New Home, besides the fight itself, everything is designed to make you feel awful. The most despicable character in the game is afraid of you, Asgore tries to talk things out instead of killing you, Sans gets off his butt and does something, then he becomes the only character to bleed... it's all supposed to make you feel horrible. I love it.
@@thehayze259 I must admit, I wasn’t expecting a response as quickly as you did, Thank you. And I 100% Agree with you, It’s poetic writing. The game warns you that your taking the game down a dark path, and presuming that you’re doing the Genocide ending as your last one, you’d likely gather that you’d be given a lot of warnings. However, when you play the genocide ending of the game. All that you’re focused on is the extermination of all of the monsters that the game can throw at you, like a bullet-hell game, (Which Undertale essentially is). Keeping on topic, The warnings are hidden in plain sight for us to spot. However, since we’re so laser-focused on the extinction of monster-kind, we miss the Many warnings that the game lobs at us for us to see. And only after finishing the Genocide ending, and relinquishing our eternal retribution of owning a “cursed” save file, do we only then spot the warnings that the game gives us. And a final thank you for making such a video. I only thought of writing this comment when you spoke about the importance of the colours in the combat sections of the game. Because of this, I then remembered Charii’s “Everything wrong with undertale video” and his points about sans bleeding, and sweating. Hence why I made such a comment.
Honestly when I beat sans I didn’t feel accomplished, I felt empty, just a husk and it didn’t help that I had also done the True pacifist beforehand. But when I beat it again, I felt accomplished.
The game did warn everyone: The more you kill, the more you distance yourself. The more you distance yourself, the easier it becomes to inflict pain on others.
The hell you mean you didn't feel accomplished? That's a hard ass fight that requires a lot of practice or initial gaming skill to complete and you did it and were like "okay". Get a load of this guy
I always understood killing sans as not "aiming a little to the left" but rather that the same button that progresses dialogue is also the same button that selects an option. Sans critical failure was a single momentary lapse in noticing that the game mechanics he had been abusing this whole time were still in effect and by talking while your heart was over the fight button, he sealed his own fate.
Yeah, Sans' fame kind of outweighs Undertale's at this point. Him and his song became the subject of so many memes that it's spread far beyond the scope of Undertale itself.
it's very noticeable how much you enjoyed writing and recording this essay, the work it took to gather so many details from the game and making connections between them that's what happens when we allow ourselves to appreciate Undertale for the great work of art it is. just playing and moving on becomes impossible congrats for the work, it was very enjoyable to watch ❤
What I love about Undertale is that canonically Sans battle isn't even a boss battle, the only battles that counts as boss battles are the ones against Toriel, Asgore, Omega Flowey, Asriel and Undyne the undying, the rest of the battles are just like if they were a normal enemy that is just a little stronger than the rest of enemys
@@minestar2247 Undyne in neutral or pacifist run doesn't count as boss battle, in genocide is hard to say, I would say 50/50 because she isn't a boss monster, but she has her own determination that make her probably half as powerfull as having a human soul
14:52 Correction, the glasses and notebook boost INV, which makes you take damage at like 45 frames instead of 60, and slows down KR slightly. The apron would still heal you if you could obtain it in geno (forcefields prevent your passage) and the pan still boosts your healing from food 17:00 He is actually not cheating at all. He's doing exactly what you can do all game. He moves first, like you, he dodges attacks, like you. He gets a damage boost if attacking a sparing foe, like you. He doesn't respect INV, like you don't. He holds his turns liek you do. Heck, you even manage to attack him in his turn just like he did in the second half of the fight. I'd say he's pretty fair. 18:28 My sib Chara getting ignored XD. 20:05 Statistically, Papyrus is the point where most quitters abandon the no mercy run. Sans generally pushes them to continue, or abandon the game entirely, and not as much as Paps does. 26:44 You can hold escape right up to and until you hit enter on him. His dialogue autoscrolls, so you have to push Chara to push the human into killing him. If you don't, you can still reset the run at no consequences to you
About the cheating, it in a certain way is cheating, because thats the thing, all the things you do like having the first turn, dodging, etc, is a PLAYER ability, so in a real time battle game it would make sense, but in a turn based one like undertale, its actually not supposed to happen, he is changing how the game itself works to make him some sort of "player", wich should not happen at all, so even tough it would make sense that he can do things you can do, it doesn't because of the nature of it being a game, and game mechanics being actually cannon in the story.
@@rafsandomierz5313I think that's just in the case of a ghost not fused to a body. Mad Dummy was immortal, but after becoming Glad Dummy ("Fully corporeal"), they get oneshot. I think it's fair to assume Mettaton is fused with their body, so they are definitely killable.
Something really cool about the AU (or AT) aspects of Undertale is it allows people to explore the same characters in completely impossible situations, based on their own understanding of the characters. And Sans has the most to unpack, so it’s really no wonder so many AU’s center on the skeleton. Projects such as Horrortale, Aftertale, or even all the edgey “sans goes crazy and kills everyone” stories are compelling not just because they remix the characters, but because they tell parts of the story the game cannot-I.e. the purpose of fan fiction as a concept. I could gush for hours on how the Undertale fandom is lighting in a bottle, but frankly, I don’t need to. This video sells well enough the impact the game has had.
There’s some like underswap and underfell tell to influence the cast. Just Sans is a really iconic and popular character base on the routes you take (mostly popular in genocide) , Now focus was I like was other AUs that focus in such things. Now I like Undertale Yellow although no much sans screentime maintain that undertale mechanic feel
"there is no armor to protect" cloudy glasses+ Notebook. it makes him deal a bit less damage and have a tiny bit of s. then there is also burnt pan which gives a healing buff
Something important to note is that sans probably assumed asgore was waiting with the 6 human souls to defeat the human once and for all, and that’s exactly what sans is afraid of. Not that he’ll lose, but that he’ll win. With 6 souls he would surely gain control over the timeline, which means any time a reset were to happen it would be at that moment before or after the fight with frisk. All the residents of the underground would remain dead, including his brother.
I’m just gonna say it. MEGALOVANIA is my favorite song in the OST. Look, I get it. It’s a generic pick and some may call it overrated, but I honestly don’t care. It just goes so hard. And yes, I have beaten the game on all routes. I have heard every song in the game. I know the Undertale fans who can’t accept that people can have opinions would’ve asked that. Anyways that’s it with my rant on why the MEGALOVANIA hate is unfair
"KR" is also commonly known to be the abbreviated version of "Karmatic Retribution" or just "Karma," which is the idea of "what goes around, comes around." Basically, it means that all actions have consequences, which is exactly the purpose of sans' fight. I also think that "Komic Relief" isn't too fitting.
When sans is struck down after completing the boss fight when he falls asleep, Its actually heavily implies that Chara (The human you named at the start) is the one who deals the finishing blow.
While Sans has gone through mischaracterization hell and back, I like this video, it goes through his moment that made him who he is, of course it’s kinda bad that this kinda caused it to completely overtake the rest of the characters, but you kinda have to understand where he’s coming from in order to justify this. Great analysis!
KR is karma. An unused line says "karma runs trough your veins". Without that power Sans actually does deal only 1 HP, effectively.making him the weakest monster in the game(statwise). Even monster kid has 2 hp. This power really fits him. Also, something you doesn't mention is that beyond messing with the mechanics to limit your choices-since you make bad ones, making you stand on a single wall, making you unable to stay on the choice screen with attacks, not letting you spare him and only go back, before ultimately trapping you completely, he actually plays like yourself, mercy kill, dodging, first turn are things you do to other enemies. On another note, this was a nice video, it's great to see a take on Sans, his boss fight is so great!! 🤩
Here's the thing, if you don't have a high LV, sans karma won't do much really. So funny enough, if you fought sans as lvl 1, he would be wayyyy easier if you fought him at lvl 15 for example
The KARMA lines are actually used -- there are multiple, and the ones displayed depend on how much KARMA you have at the time. "You felt your sins crawling on your back" 0-10 KR "You felt your sins weighing on your neck." 10-20 KR "KARMA coursing through your veins." 20-30 KR "Doomed to death of KARMA!" 30-40 KR The last of these is particularly difficult to trigger, as KR drains extremely fast at this amount. Additionally, the maximum amount of KR you can have at any one time is 40. Any more, and the game caps your KR to 40. So yeah, KR is KARMA, and not anything more, I guess.
Dude. What. Honestly, this maybe a bit cliche, BUT you are one of the MOST UNDERATED CREATORS literally ever, I feel like the time and dedication that you put into this video just out numbers any that I have watched this year (in 2024) I actually didnt fall asleep and stop concentrating half way through!
Your point is correct. At first, people tried to tell me why Undertale is good, but their reasoning was: - You can date a ghost - You can spare the monsters - Goat mom These are asinine reasons to get interested in a game. So, I treated Undertale as just another overhyped game until I saw a clip of 20:53. Now THAT got me intrigued. The point is, sometimes you got to reveal major spoilers to get others interested.
One thing that makes flowey trzmbling in fear hit even hzrder is the fact he cant feel emotions, a sadistic murderous flower who cant feel any emotions, trembling in fear begging for mercy
Snas Undertale and his fight is so iconic! It's wild to see the comic (comic sans pun insert here) relief be such a powerful character that inpacted so many! (Also, Underverse is like the Spiderverse of Undertale it's crazy and also great.)
The whole reason I played undertale was because I used to read homestuck and I was like "What do you MEAN Megalovania is in this new game I keep seeing people on my dash talking about??" And then I saw Toby made it and immediately downloaded it, lmao.
nice retrospective video! People sometimes forget what really made undertale so special. Even before people "discovered" the no-mercy route the game was already making the rounds because the story overall is so powerful, but of course the big boom came after people found out sans isn't what he seems to be, or more accurately, he could be doing so much worse. (i remember the reason i began the no mercy route was because the rumour was you got this fight, and people were saying it played megalovania, which as a homestuck fan i had to check out). this is why i love about his character, if you're going to be an asshole and kill everyone then he's gonna be an asshole right back and cheat to stop you, lol. it really is tragic, i hate that you can tell he'd rather be doing anything else. this is a guy who likes friendly jokes and pranks and is generally well liked, and you make him and the rest go through hell. so you get back that karma. like this is really one of the games ever!! if there's idk, a top 100 games of all time, undertale is going to be there, hell maybe even like top 50.
really good for a first video essay! i think you put into words really well the undertale AUs thing, and as someone who used to be really really into that stuff as a kid, hearing someone who doesn't just dismiss it as "cringe" and being actually passionate about the topic is such a breath of fresh air!
Woah, first? This is like my fourteenth lol, just the first one to actually get big. I do think a lot of Undertale AU stuff is cringe, but a fair bit is genuinely quite good, and even the bad stuff clearly had a lot of passion put into it, which I can appreciate regardless of quality.
i love sans' character and how toby's way of making a character like sans interesting, and when i first did the genocide route up to sans' fight i was in SHOCK at how hard he was to beat, and after 375 deaths i FINALLY beat sans! and when i saw how it ended... DAMN i felt that ending of sans' fight and how he was characterized, i LOVE undertale with all my heart and the moments i experienced within it will ALWAYS be why i found it so great and enjoyable, undertale is without a doubt one of the greatest games out there
31:15 -- HEY now! that was TWITTER, voting for Best Tumblr Sexyman!! tumblr did its own voting bracket afterwards and landed on Cecil Gershwin Palmer from the podcast Welcome To Night Vale, who might be the First tumblr sexyman and is still the most beloved.
My favorite interpretation for this fight is that Sam's isn't actually the final boss that you're fighting against. YOU are the final boss that he's trying to hold back. YOU are the thing threatening the very fabric of existence, after all. The theme that plays isn't TSTMPIYFS, the skng that WOULD normally be his theme, but Megalovania-something much more fitting for you, Frisk, Chara, the megalomaniac going through this world and killing everything in your path. He attacks first, even though it's normally you who does. He can offer to spare you and then stab you in the back, a mechanic that ONLY the player has had up until this point. The roles are reversed. YOU are the final boss. Personally, I adore that interpretation of the fight.
Personally I always assumed your conversation with the fallen human talking about moving onto the next world didn't have anything to do with undertale. They embody your personal need for progression at any cost and will be with you forever whether you listen to them or not, they wish to move onto the next game, the next story, or into your life itself to continue becoming stronger, and to leave more destruction in your wake, they even comment that they see no reason to continue to continue to recreate the world and destroy it again. Once you let them in they are with you forever and if you want any world to take part in to be meaningful you have to fight against their counsel to destroy it.
papyrus's special attack would've been a gaster blaster with teeths at least in theory because papyrus told us that in his home "you would've been *BLASTED*"
Toby was also quite clever with having the game "remember" that you did the genocide route. The base game files record it, but also (at least on Steam) a random, innocuously named file is placed in the user data separately from where the base game files are kept. So you can delete the game and reinstall it, but this side file will still be there. The file is looked for by the game executable and if found it "knows" you did the genocide route. Steam's cloud syncing also makes it pretty difficult for someone to remove this "tattletale" file as Steam will usually just put the file right back.
Undertale had such an impact that we're still talking about it 9 years later. This itself was enough to make me cry, I'm so happy my favorite game is still prominent.
When I was young, Sans' fight was the coolest thing ever, to me and I'm not surprised, it overshadowed the rest of the game for a lot of people. Sans is revealed as a secret badass and without going off character, does such a huge turn, from what you've known from him. But at the same time, this power has always been implied and if you've been playing the other routes before, you finally get the satisfaction of seeing his true strength. You really feel the consequences of what you've done, in the hardest battle of the game and one of the only ones, where the game doesn't hold your hands. In the Asriel boss, I felt like the game wanted me to win. Same for Asgore and Omega Flowey, but when you fight Sans, you're supposed to lose. Sans breaks the fourth wall, knows fully well what's at stake and Chara takes control to kill him, for the first time (or at least thats the implication) Him being the only monster to bleed also adds so much mystery to him and strengthens, how duster his death actually is. (Also the theory that his blood is ketchup is really bad tbh) Flowey's horror before and Asgore's death after, also really heighten the impact and it's overall just a stunning scene And yknow, teenagers like edge, so obviously the fandom ate this up xd At least I speak for myself when I say that and it's probably the same reason why I can't see myself doing this route anymore. The fights are cool, but it'd break my heart to hurt these characters Its still insane to me, how a game whose main focus is the Dreemurr family, has a fanbase so much more focused on this one guy. Not that he doesn't deserve it of course, but I find that kinda fascinating, since I don't commonly see something like that, with other properties Not sure, this comment really adds anything to the video, since you essentially said most of the same things, but I wanted to let the thoughts out Great stuff!
I've never had a game before that made me bawl my eyes out and never had one that MADE me physically put it down and REFUSE to beat it. I have never completed a Genocide route and I NEVER will. I saved those characters, helped them, fell in love with them, grew to knew them. It's WRONG to reset and kill them all, plain and simple. It still makes me tear up that a game had such a profound impact on me lol.
Excellent video. Your structure and presentation (including editing) are top-notch, bro. And, as with anytime anyone makes an Undertale video, I learned something new. And cried.
I actually wanna talk about WTF DUDE U ARE SO UNDERRATED this vid was really enjoyable and i loved it. thank you for making it and good luck in the future!!
This is my first time seeing one of your videos, but it won't be the last. You did an excellent job with this essay. I know it took you a long time to reach the point where you were ready to write this video, so I want you to know: _it was worth the wait._ Keep up the good work.
Fun fact: Sans doesn't actually consciously experience the time loops. He's just so observant that he notices all the discrepancies in the player's mannerisms and the world's happenings. He studies timelines, but he doesn't live every one of them. Also, the very very last chance to turn the game off before it irreversibly corrupts is when Flowy begs "Please don't kill me." Because the very last choice you get in the game is to not continue that dialogue box and just turn off the game there. Once you press A (or its equivalent) and prompt the animation of slaughtering him, there is no turning back. Your last chance to show mercy is a choice you have to make as a player and ONLY as a player.
One thing that not enough people talk about is that Sans being from Deltraune explains the line "Look, I gave up trying to go back a long time ago. And getting to the surface doesn't really appeal anymore either."
A very interesting thing to note is that Sans is the first person in the game that ACTUALLY tries to kill you. He really is the weakest Enemy. But he's the first one to get serious and not pull any punches. That's also why he goes first. He initiated the fight. He attacks you first, and with all he has. Even Undyne let you attack first, leading to the following fight being really nothing more than her death throws, not a real fight. Metaton also just had a small shimmer of hope left, and thus let you hit him first, to his demise. Sans is the first real Deathmatch of Genocide mode.
Thanks to whatever gods there are for putting this video in my recommended. What a wonderful essay. I genuinely enjoyed watching it for all 35 minutes. Thank you for your hard work.
With how Chara at the end decribes themselves as giving hints, experiencing it all through the player's eyes along the way when they've done it before. I see Chara as a reflection of previous players showing the game to their friend. as we can all agree there is a joy and catharsis of seeing someone new, play a game you yourself have completed. you can never have the experience again of playing said game for the first time. but you can get a taste of that through someone who is. Thats why reaction videos and first time lets plays can provide so much enjoyment. When Chara says lets destroy it, and do it all again, they mean either having someone else come on the journey through undertale as you have, or do the same with another game. milk everything you can out of it, and on to the next.
This makes me want to play again to see all the stuff in the game I missed the first time through. Unfortunately, the game asked me not to play again so everyone could live happily ever after without resetting, so I can’t. Because a true pacifist run includes sparing them that one last time.
Back then when Chara would say "It's time to move on to the next world", I interpreted that as "the surface". Because Asriel would tell you in Pacifist (if you went to your starting point after breaking the barrier) Chara hated humanity. Chara ends you not only because they don't need you anymore, but because "this was something personal". Chara is the player now.... (But I'm guessing the whole "being dead" didn't last as long as you sold your soul)
Another thing. He’s fighting you, not cuz “Grr you killed my brother revenge” but because he’s terrified. I think what he thinks is that genocide will be the last run. (Cara erases the timeline, originally, it was supposed to be deleted). This is the one time sans has to change the stakes, or else he’s gone, forever. Of course, the cruel irony is that now, genocide routes are common because of him.
Minor correction about Stronger than You: Alfa995, the person who made the original Sans animation, didn't make the song itself. According to the description of that video, "someone made an 8 bit cover of a song from Steven Universe, another person made lyrics for an Undertale version of the same song and a comic based off it, then someone else sung it, and now I animated it." I'm not sure if the Frisk and Chara variations were originally animated by someone else, but that's what happened with the Sans version. Awesome video anyway!
Thing is, Sans isn't actually manipulating invincibility frames. One of the things that makes this fight a brilliant manipulation of game mechanics is that in Undertale, 1 ATK damage ignores invincibility frames. It needs to be 2 ATK or above to activate invicibility frames.
15:13 what I love about the "Sans is sparing you" moment the most? Sans isn't even trying to trick you into thinking he'll let you go. No, you're way beyond that and you both know it. What he says is "let's forget all this, ok? just lay down your weapon, and... well, *my job will be a lot easier* ." He's giving you one last chance to at least partially redeem yourself. Oh no, it's not redemption in the sense of moving on, changing your ways and becoming a better person. There's no saving you, no such path to offer you. But you can let him kill you easily, right here, right now. And you can, "if you're really my friend", never come back. The choice is yours.
I think the reward for doing the Genozid run is the Challenge. I beat the Game today now also in this way and the fight with sans was very fun, even if I had to try a lot. Every time thought my determation I pass peace for peace to his last special attack. Memorizing all his Attak patterns and see him accept his fate fills you with joy. The world/Game become unable to play anymore becomes irrelevant due you finished the game anyways.
If you take no damage, 13 turns is all it takes to beat this fight, but even I took an extra turn or two to heal, seeing people no hit run this is bonkers
33:18 I think this really got the point of how Undertale got such a vibrant fan scene. It's similar to Touhou, which Toby really liked and also got a has a total of at least 113,000 song arrangements. In the end an environment encouraging fan work can do wonders to organic fandoms
the thing with the 'spare' section of sans fight is that, When it says dont come back, it really feels like its implying that the reason he killed you was so that you could 'reset' the game and start over a new, better route.
A scene i won't stop remembering when the genocide route is mentioned are the 2 endings of the pacifist route AFTER doing a full genocide and destroying the timeline. If you pick the option where "you have other places to go", the photo that, originally, was you with your new monster friends, will now show Chara on it, with everyone's face except of themselves crossed out. If you pick to go with the monsters, your character will wake up in the middle of the night, with red eyes and a smile, Chara seemingly to take over your body. You can't escape the consequences by being nice right after. You're a monster. And you will always be.
hayze: compliments nearly all undertale fan projects also hayze: "it got so popular to the point where someone made a whole TV show about it, is it good? *no*
Also, just want to add in there, but all those times you meet sans before the big reveal/encounter, him teleporting around and stuff works to hint at it but not give it away as he's early on established as a gag character much like his brother, just different, One that breaks the 4th wall instead. So the teleports and stuff work out well to the point that it's genuinely a reveal when you first see him there to judge you, and he decides to fight you and that reveals that his abilities are more than just a joke ability.
A reminder that Toby Fox has asked fans to call it the No Mercy route, as he feels calling it the Genocide route downplays the severity of the word, even if it's accurate to what occurs in the game.

Wow, another cool thing I completely missed
This actually is sad
I think it's more self-condescending than that. instead of his brother, he's the one who kept believing that you could change which is why he didn't step in earlier, and he's regretting his own nativity.
Fun fact: that final attack at the very end that crashes the game was originally supposed to completely delete the game from your device, but Toby couldn't figure out how to do it

Most animations only give sans the famous blue eye when he also has a yellow eye
Blue = patience
Yellow = justice
That's why Papyrus is soooooooo Patient
But he doesn’t have a glowing eye
But his counter part swap has an orange glowing eye same with disbelief so maybe disbelief papyrus glowing eye = bravery?
imo the flaming eye is something that's harder for me to grasp the meaning and origin of than the lack of the yellow glow
I think this is pretty much a aesthetic thing because pretty much every color got a soul(imagine how ugly would be sans brown eye) still, that would be a cool reference.
My theory is that someone put up a frame of the sans fight that happened to have the blue eye. It could have been the yellow eye that became famous.
the 'you'd be dead where you stand' quote can also be taken in another way, as without sans's promise to PROTECT over you, the other monsters wouldn't have been so nice in snowdin, or you may not have made it through other areas without him helping, such as when he stalks you in in waterfall during the genocide route (check the unique shyren concert text in genocide), implying that he could have helped us during pacifist and neutral through practically all areas.
And to think all this time I thought he was being useless
By the established laws of Undertale, he should have invincibility frames too, but he just sort of... doesn't, which is why I call it "cheating."
And yeah, it's an oversimplification, but the video is already 35 minutes long, I didn't want it to be an hour.
@@qwerty3793 I think that’s missing his point. There still his an option to spare him, and he tells you how to do it, begs you to do it.
Some notes that Hayze didn't touch upon:
Sans does 1 damage per frame and dodges every hit despite having 1 hp.
Each of these characters have a reason to be determined to kill you- (UNDYNE's Determination is inside her- dunno what to think about that.)
Sans performs a betrayal kill, which is a nice touch since that's how you killed Papyrus, and the act of SPAREing one turn and attacking the next is also how you can pass Toriel quickly in the RUINs on neutral.
Sans is tied to JUSTICE and PATIENCE via his eye colors, the only non-red colors on enemy monsters in the entire game.
Whats tstmpwyes

Sans' mercy trick is another thematically appropriate part of the fight in its own right. I don't know about the regular enemies, but the bosses at least, have different death scenes if you play the fights through as if in pacifist until you're able to spare them, and _then_ kill them.

What I genuinely love in this fight is that technically all of these rules in the battle are totally legal because of other examples of the game it also references many other characters for example, (oh boy this going to be long)
papyrus is one of the few fights where the box moves when you move, on the last attack when you jump so high the box itself has to expand just to keep you visible.
Asriel is the only character that does damage without really any i frames, they are much shorter in his final attack,
Asgore upgrades his attacks as the fight goes on, which is what Sans does overtime.

To quote Chara, “It was Not My determination, But *Yours*.” -Chara
I do apologise if I got off topic when writing this essay for you.

Yeah, Sans' fame kind of outweighs Undertale's at this point. Him and his song became the subject of so many memes that it's spread far beyond the scope of Undertale itself.

that's what happens when we allow ourselves to appreciate Undertale for the great work of art it is. just playing and moving on becomes impossible
congrats for the work, it was very enjoyable to watch ❤
What I love about Undertale is that canonically Sans battle isn't even a boss battle, the only battles that counts as boss battles are the ones against Toriel, Asgore, Omega Flowey, Asriel and Undyne the undying, the rest of the battles are just like if they were a normal enemy that is just a little stronger than the rest of enemys
Undyne doesn't count as a boss monster, so there is practically no boss battle in that run, but it's still extremely difficult
@@minestar2247 Undyne in neutral or pacifist run doesn't count as boss battle, in genocide is hard to say, I would say 50/50 because she isn't a boss monster, but she has her own determination that make her probably half as powerfull as having a human soul
@@Sin-Nombre04 Yeah, sorry for misspelling
I think ur getting the cannon term “boss monster” mixed up with the non-cannon term “boss battle”
Wait, does that mean that the I.noodles heal 4hp in the sans fight? Cus it heals 4hp in normal battles and 90 in boss fights (15hp in the overworld)
14:52 Correction, the glasses and notebook boost INV, which makes you take damage at like 45 frames instead of 60, and slows down KR slightly. The apron would still heal you if you could obtain it in geno (forcefields prevent your passage) and the pan still boosts your healing from food
17:00 He is actually not cheating at all.
If you don't, you can still reset the run at no consequences to you
About the cheating, it in a certain way is cheating, because thats the thing, all the things you do like having the first turn, dodging, etc, is a PLAYER ability, so in a real time battle game it would make sense, but in a turn based one like undertale, its actually not supposed to happen, he is changing how the game itself works to make him some sort of "player", wich should not happen at all, so even tough it would make sense that he can do things you can do, it doesn't because of the nature of it being a game, and game mechanics being actually cannon in the story.
note that you can't actually get the apron in geno (or the temmie armor) but the part about the pan and purple armors stands

"Komic relief" has the same energy as little siblings making shit up to win a "fight"
The only thing is him saying you'd be dead where you stand implies he wouldve killed you even before you had a lot of karma
"You felt your sins crawling on your back" 0-10 KR
"You felt your sins weighing on your neck." 10-20 KR
"KARMA coursing through your veins." 20-30 KR
"Doomed to death of KARMA!" 30-40 KR
The last of these is particularly difficult to trigger, as KR drains extremely fast at this amount. Additionally, the maximum amount of KR you can have at any one time is 40. Any more, and the game caps your KR to 40. So yeah, KR is KARMA, and not anything more, I guess.

Your point is correct. At first, people tried to tell me why Undertale is good, but their reasoning was:
- You can date a ghost
- You can spare the monsters

nice retrospective video!

What do I do then if I'm so god darn evil for murdering a bunch of virtual monsters? Stop playing videogames or what?
papyrus's special attack would've been a gaster blaster with teeths at least in theory because papyrus told us that in his home "you would've been *BLASTED*"
The moment where you see sans, your reaction is:
Im FUCKED UP ARENT I??
Toby was also quite clever with having the game "remember" that you did the genocide route. The base game files record it, but also (at least on Steam) a random, innocuously named file is placed in the user data separately from where the base game files are kept. So you can delete the game and reinstall it, but this side file will still be there. The file is looked for by the game executable and if found it "knows" you did the genocide route. Steam's cloud syncing also makes it pretty difficult for someone to remove this "tattletale" file as Steam will usually just put the file right back.
personally my favorite line that sans says is after your death (upon sparing) " if we're really friends , you wont come back "
Undertale had such an impact that we're still talking about it 9 years later.
This itself was enough to make me cry, I'm so happy my favorite game is still prominent.
... omg I just got it. Sans is a comedian... a COMIC. He's COMIC Sans! Oh good heavens...
Sans breaks the fourth wall, knows fully well what's at stake and Chara takes control to kill him, for the first time (or at least thats the implication)
Him being the only monster to bleed also adds so much mystery to him and strengthens, how duster his death actually is. (Also the theory that his blood is ketchup is really bad tbh)
Flowey's horror before and Asgore's death after, also really heighten the impact and it's overall just a stunning scene
And yknow, teenagers like edge, so obviously the fandom ate this up xd
At least I speak for myself when I say that and it's probably the same reason why I can't see myself doing this route anymore. The fights are cool, but it'd break my heart to hurt these characters
Its still insane to me, how a game whose main focus is the Dreemurr family, has a fanbase so much more focused on this one guy. Not that he doesn't deserve it of course, but I find that kinda fascinating, since I don't commonly see something like that, with other properties
Not sure, this comment really adds anything to the video, since you essentially said most of the same things, but I wanted to let the thoughts out
Great stuff!
Ikr it’s still one of my favorite battles tho
Fave iconic part of the series
Sans doesnt deserved the popularity he has. Thats just my opinion though.
I've never heard "karmic relief", but I have heard "karmic retribution" pretty much universally.

This is my first time seeing one of your videos, but it won't be the last. You did an excellent job with this essay. I know it took you a long time to reach the point where you were ready to write this video, so I want you to know: _it was worth the wait._
Keep up the good work.
This was such a well put together and amazing video! I’m sorry Sans has you locked in his basement though, hope that gets resolved.
15:55 "the character so lazy that he wrote messages for why he shouldn't pick up a sock."
it's too much work though.
Thanks to whatever gods there are for putting this video in my recommended. What a wonderful essay. I genuinely enjoyed watching it for all 35 minutes.
Thank you for your hard work.
Correction: 13:18 It's 1 damage every 2 frames actually
Sans and Papyrus names are actually based on a webcomic called Helvetica, which the main character is a skeleton named Helvetica (a font)
28:52 the original is by djsmell, that version is just an animation
As someone who never went for a genocide route, it's interesting to know the dialogues I... "missed".
1 million views in a month, calling it now. Great job making this, very inspiring to make cooler boss fights
Nah, it's a month old with about 100k. It's not getting to 1 mil in a month. Thank you for believing in me though :)
Minor correction about Stronger than You:
Alfa995, the person who made the original Sans animation, didn't make the song itself. According to the description of that video, "someone made an 8 bit cover of a song from Steven Universe, another person made lyrics for an Undertale version of the same song and a comic based off it, then someone else sung it, and now I animated it."
I'm not sure if the Frisk and Chara variations were originally animated by someone else, but that's what happened with the Sans version.
Awesome video anyway!
Thing is, Sans isn't actually manipulating invincibility frames. One of the things that makes this fight a brilliant manipulation of game mechanics is that in Undertale, 1 ATK damage ignores invincibility frames. It needs to be 2 ATK or above to activate invicibility frames.
i absolutely adore this video ive never played no mercy but sans is so cool
15:13 what I love about the "Sans is sparing you" moment the most? Sans isn't even trying to trick you into thinking he'll let you go. No, you're way beyond that and you both know it.
What he says is "let's forget all this, ok? just lay down your weapon, and... well, *my job will be a lot easier* ."
He's giving you one last chance to at least partially redeem yourself.
23:21: its not blood, its ketchup, he got hungry during the fight and ate sone ketchup
10:17 "he's going to fucking annihilate you" got me dying for a second
the thing with the 'spare' section of sans fight is that, When it says dont come back, it really feels like its implying that the reason he killed you was so that you could 'reset' the game and start over a new, better route.
I kinda wanna cry now 😅Undertale just won't ever leave me, because I cannot find closure about what I've done to this world
I feel that. The story of sans makes me really depressed.
@@ytuser4562Don't be depressed, he's happy in the pacifist ending
A scene i won't stop remembering when the genocide route is mentioned are the 2 endings of the pacifist route AFTER doing a full genocide and destroying the timeline. If you pick the option where "you have other places to go", the photo that, originally, was you with your new monster friends, will now show Chara on it, with everyone's face except of themselves crossed out. If you pick to go with the monsters, your character will wake up in the middle of the night, with red eyes and a smile, Chara seemingly to take over your body.
You can't escape the consequences by being nice right after. You're a monster. And you will always be.
Thanks for the video analysis! It was very good. Keep going!
hayze: compliments nearly all undertale fan projects
