Lots of vernier caliper experts in the comments! "Jason, you don't know what you're doing away from a whiteboard!" While partially true, whiteboards are my safe space, I know how to use a caliper haha. The reason I'm not using the other end of the caliper (as demonstrated at 10:48, when measuring a glass gap) is because even though it's plastic, it'd be enough to scratch the paint if I wasn't super careful with it. Easier to hover over it, get it as close as possible (with my eyes, not the camera you're watching from), and not worry about scratching the areas I'm measuring. That cool? Engineering Explained I saw no problem with the measuring, obvious to most thinking people.
But if you are worried about scratching, might not wanna do what you did when you showed the different in bumper vs hood. Because your nails, how smoothed they may be, will make scratches. To small to see easy, but they are there.
And that paint job is so beyond unacceptable. All the scratches you showed was all of them way beyond ok.
As someone who often put ceramic coating on new cars, I would say the orange peel is the norm now a days. But those canyons through the paint thankfully is not.

Scratches are normal but 90% of cars delivered are unscratched. That being said what's not normal is for a dealer not to check the car or for a dealer not to bother repair the damages and imperfections, once it gets delivered to them to give to the customer.

@SUPERBOOM777 Lets say, why not, if it is electric and working... But what's wrong with Tesla's is the basic thing - about it is huge high powered luxury sedans working as first battery cars. I dont want 2 tons heavy piece of poorly painted battery rack. It's not usefull - why we through dawn of the battery age are doing this heavy crap? I like the way BMW or VW does the electricity as VW e-golf is small hatchback with range about 300 km but half capacity of batteries.
I already read complains on Tesla's from others EV owners about Tesla's with their huge batteries are blocking charging terminals for too long, while BMW's and VW's are charged in 10 - 15 min's etc.... I like electric vehicles, but sadly it is not just about electricity - electrification goes through lowering of weight and changing our habits....

I worked on a Honda assembly line for a few years on the first section of the trim line, meaning we received the vehicle bodies right after the paint section. These scratches are absolutely unacceptable and should have been EASILY caught either by employees down line or by QA employees at the end of the line. At Honda, we wore uniforms and boots without any exposed metal pieces and were required to cover all panels with large protective covers immediately after receiving the bodies from paint. These covers remain on the body throughout the rest of the manufacturing process. Having seen video footage of Tesla's factories, I know they also use these coverings, so I wonder WHEN these scratches might have occurred. It's clear that their paint application is definitely sub par quality out of the gate in this case, especially with that captured dust particle. But those scratches, I would assume, must have come later perhaps in storage or even in transit to you, the customer. Perhaps, that's why you received it so quickly even. Maybe it was in storage waiting for a buyer in unsatisfactory conditions?
I don't know though. Those driver side scratches look like they could have been caused by someone getting in and out of the cab with metal on their person or maybe rubbing from a pneumatic drill hose or something on the assembly line. OnTrim line 1 (Honda), we removed the doors and sent them off to a separate line so that it was easier to enter and exit the vehicle body without scratching it. I wonder if Tesla has a similar manufacturing process.

As for the panelgaps, they are the canary in the coal mine: it is not the gap perse, it's the inconsistency. Those panels were put on the car by different people (mostly) or at least on different workstations. How well they align shows how well the whole system is calibrated. If the panels don't align who is to say that the wheels, axles, brakes, seats and every other part aligns with the rest of the car. This shows VERY poor building quality.

When your average truck in America cost $30,000-$60,000 new a $46,000 car is not expensive specially when the higher luxury brands are $40,000-$80,000. the average new car price in the US is $36,000, expensive would be $60,000 plus, cheap would be $25,000 or less. And is coming from a person who payed $40 for a truck that got me through high school and a few years after before being sold for $400 and then bought a car for $1,400. That being said, the gapping should be better though gap quality can be considered nitpicking, but the paint has zero excuses for that even leaving the factory. I worked in the quality control department for a huge steel company a few years ago and debris can also be fragments from the steel plate manufacturing process. As an automotive supplier, the company actually had different quality specs for different automotive companies while Toyotas requirements were the strictest. We had to destroy/recycle several coils because of minimal flaws within the steel plates.

Yeah vehicles need to go through routine inspections throughout the manufacturing process, nobody saw the blemishes after applying the paint or while applying the clearcoat? Ridiculous. It could be because Tesla has been known to treat workers poorly and most auto manufacturers are only concerned with saving manufacturing costs and getting cars built as quickly as possible, so instead of that worker lowering his average time to complete his work he just didn't mention it.

I only ordered one at a time but refused acceptance of the first one due to several defects and then ordered the second one in a different color and the dealership called me and told me that I wouldn't be happy with the way it arrived either so I bought a different brand car that year. Chevrolet has always been a lower quality brand car but compared to other brands usually a less expensive brand to buy. I work at a car manufacturing facility, and I work with engineering and maintenance in the paint department. That said , our goal is to send out good quality. We’ve had issues with dirt in the paint, metal birds , clear paint sags, e-coat primesand spits, Our department has shut down other departments such at trim and chassis to fix some quality issues. Looking at your video it appears to me that this paint mutilation with all the fine scratches and deep cuts probably came from the next department called trim and chassis. You also have some fitting issues with the body. Teslas’ stamping and body department engineering needs to either check quality a bit more before shipping it to the next department, because I’ve seen offset gaps in the body in my department before the car is actually painted. My team calls out the Bodyshop department and we perform a trace back procedure to find out how many units have those offset gaps , and also they need to check with their suppliers who makes the doors if they don’t make their own doors ,and other parts to see if they’re manufacturing defects. These inexcusable defects you’ve pointed out should’ve been VES calls all V1! Sorry for using manufacturing technical terms.

      @emjoneshouseDIY 5 лет назад +15

I'm sure it's not just Nissan. All manufacturers go through this continuous "find and fix" management. It is very normal for manufacturing and never stops. Just as soon as you "tune" a process another process shows itself and your on to the next problem. The end goal is to make sure a product can go from one end of the assembly line to the other and out the door without ever moving backwards. Its difficult for any manufacturer. And just because he has a Nissan in his pic does not mean he works at a Nissan plant. ;)

I am an engineer working for a large german premium manufacturer. Normally I would be very skeptical seeing all these flaws in a brand new car straight from factory, but since I saw similar and worse problems with my own eyes in case of a Model S with a listed price > 170K, the claims made in the video appear to be plausible. For a car with so many defects to leave the factory their QC processes have to be utter trash or non existent. Not to mention that many of the issues shown would never even occur in our plant as processes have been setup in preventive ways. Even if so, a car like this would never leave the factory. And with this staggering amount of defects, heads would roll for sure. As for the panel gaps, I have personally seen Tesla's that are even worse, but this one is bad enough already. We have very narrow tolerances for gap offsets and use the latest measuring and production technologies available. It's still not an easy task, but in Tesla's case the entire manufacturing process has to be flawed, not just some sections. Measuring another car will result in vastly different offsets, still way out of their supposed tolerances. It's not just a specific part that is out of spec or a machine that isn't calibrated. There is a randomness at play that - if I had to guess - stems from a mixture of human error and poor structural body design with regard to best assembly practices and an overall rushed or non existent QC.

The dust particle is arguably excusable, clean rooms can only be so clean and if you're spending all day looking at painted panels as your job i can understand you might accidentally glaze over an imperfection on 1 piece, but those scratches are a joke.
See how the scratches on the bumper follow round the curve? They were there before it was put on the car, that's been knocked over or stacked stupidly or some such - this means that not only does the person that caused it not care enough to get it sent back to have it prepped and repainted, but whoever mounted it onto the car didn't care either, and let's not even consider whether a pre delivery inspection was conducted on it.

The major problem is that Tesla doesn’t do a inspection at the shipping port. For example, BMW has multiple delivery/shipping centers located by major ports in the east and west coast US. Every car that BMW builds wether from Germany or South Carolina goes thru those centers before being train or trucked to your local dealership. Even though BMW does an inspection at the factory they still do a thorough inspection at the delivery center here in the States to catch anything that the factory didn’t catch. Tesla doesn’t do this crucial step. During my tour of bmw’s delivery center, it’s surprising how much repairs are done at there. Paint defects, scratches during shipping, fitment issues, etc.

If they end up legitimately addressing all these paint and manufacturing defects then fine but it is alarming that a 50 K car came like this delivered from the factory. The only reason you're getting it repaired is because you are an enthusiast and you took the time to go over the car and note everything down. Most other people would just be excited about getting their new Tesla and just proceed to put miles on it. This should be a lesson to everyone about the importance of inspecting your vehicle upon purchase/delivery.

But come on it's been ten years, Tesla should of had these production problems solved.
I think Musk is spreading himself WAAAAAY too thin. Which hurts the BEV market. Because people will say if I have to spend $100,00+ to get a decent BEV then forget it. People do judge the mechanics of a car especially if it's new tech by the paint job and body panels.

I work at one of the automotive OEMs in the Southeast Michigan area and these scratches would have never made it through final inspect and would have been sent back for rework.
And you can also tell that Tesla (with the differences in their gaps) is struggling with stamping out the various panels and getting all of the GD&T set up properly so that everything would line up properly.
We would see this level of dimensional instability/out-of-spec tolerances during our prototyping phase, NOT when the vehicle is delivered to the customer after it's been in production for about a year-and-a-half.
These issues would never fly where I work. You might see some of this kind of stuff during the early build phases and ramp-up of production, but after a year and a half, you should be hitting and BEATING your dimensional tolerancing and stability.

I worked at a Ford plant and QC was a HUGE priority! If a vehicle was found to have any defects workers were responsible for letting their supervisor know and give the batch number for the car. When the vehicle got to the end of the line it was brought aside and left to have the issue completely repaired. If multiple defects were present the line would be shut down until the issue was solved. All panels that could be scratched during installation were protected and protective layers for the doors and panels were added during transport to bring all potential damage during shipping of the vehicle was minimum. Not to mention any issues that were found after the fact either at a dealership or by a customer was dealt with promptly, with full body paint work, extended warranties and/or repairs were done at no charge to the customer and done to the highest standards. The amount of vehicles made in a day was 2-3000 depending on hours and how well the line was working, with an average of around 75,000 cars being made monthly there was less then 10 cars with defects that made it to the customer. Hopefully this is one of the handful of cars that slipped through the cracks and not a common occurrence. I understand that it isn't always perfect, and that once in a blue moon the stars align and a vehicle manages to slip through all the cracks and ends up having issues that the customer finds. So as long as this was one of the rare occurrences and Tesla dose the right thing (which it sounds like they are) then I'm not too concerned. However if this is a common trend then Tesla really needs to improve its QC and find a way to protect cars from damage during transport and assembly.

Automotive manufacturing in North America has suffered badly under union rule. High wages, extraordinary benefits and lavish pensions have driven the auto sector into the red slowly for the past few decades while complacency and entitlement of many union workers has brought down quality in an age when people expect perfection off the assembly line.
Even with robotics, automotive manufacturing has improved dramatically but will never be perfect, but as long as humans are programming, maintaining and manufacturing the robots, they will never achieve the perfection we have come to expect. From assembly to delivery, there are multiple opportunities for defects and damage to occur. As another auto expert has pointed out, you could walk any new car lot and find defects in virtually every vehicle.
Tesla has an up-hill battle ahead of them as a new manufacturer, trying to solve their quality issues in today’s cut-throat market. How long before Elon looks to out-source his manufacturing to other countries? This video could have been done with almost any brand of automobile. Unfortunately, Tesla is way behind on QA/QC on in their manufacturing process. Trying to correct their issues in the American labour union environment will be costly and Musk may run out of cash before he’s able to demonstrate Tesla’s build quality and reliability is good enough to compete with other main-stream manufacturers.
I applaud Elon’s determination to take the industry in a new direction, but maybe it’s the concept of the single-occupant vehicle that needs to be re-considered.

You have to step away from the past mistakes and corrupted unions (which afaik only happened to such an extent in the US) and take that actually very worker-friendly and protecting concept to the new millenium. Like every other first world nation did long ago. Every employee in Europe who is in a union or whose company is part of a union shake their head when reading stuff like that.
The US auto industry just made bad cars that do not sell well on the other side of the big seas, that's why the manufacturers are in the red. And no, you cannot find flaws and defects on every third VW, Toyota or BMW when looking around at your local car dealer in Germany.

Working in a car plant, those scratches are not normal. Or rather: shouldn't be.
A single scratch might slip by final inspection and quality checks, but unlikely. But if the car left the factory with all those scratches, someone isn't doing their job. And I'd expect more froma manufacturer of higher priced cars.
It seems as much as Tesla have their electric act together, they have yet to master being a car manufacturer.
The texture of the paintjob overall doesn't seem odd, though. Looks like the normal fine texture of paint in run-of-the-mill cars off our production line, to be honest. However, we decidedly DO notice special option paint jobs in odd colours, as they are hand painted rather than robot painted and have a much better, smoother and more glossy finish.

On the other hand, they are practically new to the business, but should really up their attention to detail, otherwise as soon as the other brands catch up to their technological edge, they are minced meat.
To be honest, though, when I went to a dealership/garage for the brand I am working at, to get some maintenance on my own vehicle, it was around the time the first specimen of a new generation of one of our models were delivered, and the gaps, paintjob etc. of the brand new specimen on display were abysmal!
So if established manufacturers have trouble with new model generations first batches, I am willing to accept a new manufacturer to screw up on their first specimen, too.
One of the reasons I'd never buy a new car from the 1st year or two of the model. Too much potential for halfbaked engineering details and teething troubles on top of teams and plants struggling to adapt to manufacturing something diffrent whilst meeting production numbers required.

I agree, I've seen quite a few cars on lots recently. Seeing scuffs and little scratches are pretty par for the coarse since not every car can be transported in a ISO 9001 container. But a pain blemish that bad is easily a deal breaker.

Ik don't think there is a Quality Control at Tesla. I took delivery of 15 Tesla's in total. These quality issues seem very familiar. The later the delivery, the more problems...

    • @alex0711a
      @alex0711a 5 лет назад +9

They have to make their numbers. So they are not allowed to delay deliveries because of something minor like quality problems in paint. Can fix it afterwards once revenue is recognized and the car appeared in the statistic as "delivered"

Maybe the reason for the 2-day turnaround on a vehicle people are otherwise waiting months for is that your Model 3 was actually someone else's Model 3 but that person declined delivery because of the glaring issues with the paint (and maybe even the gaps). You were just the lucky guy who ordered the exact same thing, and they happened to have one lying around...

@James Sempy They have to be quite prudent. Because their worker won't wait for the cars to be sold to be paid. So unsold inventory is basically debt. With their already high debt load they have to cut production asap if they have a downturn. Doing a liquidation with their fragile finance would be catastrophic. But who know how many car they have to produce. With their ceo i'm not convince of them being prudent..

    • @dlamardeyoutoube
      @dlamardeyoutoube 5 лет назад

@James Sempy They will need to tap the capital market one way or another. There is rumour that underwriter were feed up with their capital raise and asked them profitables quarters in order to not risk reputation. The next quarter is pretty important for them. Most likely will need to pay around 300M on march first to creditor. I think that the most valuable asset that Tesla has is not their technology but the Brand Tesla itself. They could try to monetize it without diluting it. But i can't give you a clear example on that matter. Now dealership could be a way to save money because their sale cost is extreme. But Tesla was built around that ''boutique'' image that dealership don't offer. The auto market as a whole is entering a very difficult time. Doing prediction is extreme sport. I could say Tesla should do a deal and avoid problem by selling is battery/motor to let say Toyota to create a Toyota with power by Tesla but would the actors be ready to strike a deal...not sure at all

One thing that brings me back to this video is how much better the quality has gotten since they remade their manufacturing process for the assembly lines in some sections. The 'issues' are no longer issues but people still seem to think Tesla has massive problems (some ofc, but like any vehicle, some have problems some dont)

I like Tesla and want Tesla to succeed. But having a few best friends working there.. well.... yeah I'll stay very far away from the model 3. Rushed and poorly made. Bad decisions are consistent from beginning of production. Many issues like how these cars are storaged, prepped & even delivery. The only ones who suffer are the people that are in some sort of temp honeymoon with this new purchaee so they ignore its flaws.

No one wants to see them fail. But come on, for that kind of $money, get it right man, get it right! Seems to me like the early adopters are taking the risk. Surely this will dramatically affect resale value in future, particularly for those cars out of warranty. Paint, gaps, ground issues, condensate in lights, Chargers that won't release. Most of these are hardware related and can't be fixed with a firmware update.

    Bought a new Model 3.
    1. Paint scratched from transport = Tesla tried to polish it w/o success, had to paint it.
    2. Rattles from the rear door = 2 days w/o the car, two faulty locks
    3. Rattles from a front door = under evaluation…
Great iPad Pro Max with 4 wheels though.

The scratches in the paint are a thing I'd be a bit upset about. I'm not an insane stickler about panel gaps but the difference in elevation would drive me a bit insane. The main issue I have with panel gaps is not the look or anything, it's a much bigger issue.
When you have gaps that are up to 2mm difference per panel then that means that either the car or the part in question is being made to such a tolerance that could potentially lead to you purchasing a replacement door for the same car that came off another identical model, but that is too large to even fit yours.
It is nothing to do with being picky about who cares about the gap, it shows that the parts aren't made to a very strict quality which shows that down the road even NEW parts might cause issues, especially with body panels which even made to very tight standards, still causes difficulty for Body Shops for example
