Russian cargo airplane grounded with no end in sight at Toronto airport

- At more than $1,000 per day, the tarmac at Toronto Pearson International Airport has become one of the most expensive parking lots in the world. A Russian cargo plane has been racking up those fees since February, after Canada declared it could no longer fly.
Three days after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Canada - like many other countries - closed its airspace to Russian aircraft. This meant that Russia’s Antonov AN-124 cargo plane was suddenly grounded.
A Ministry of Transport spokesperson said that “this measure is in effect until further notice,” leaving an indefinite timeline for the aircraft’s future.

I am not sure which metric you are using to say it is the largest cargo plane in the world, but the max takeoff weight of a 747-8F is greater than the AN124... but I am possibly biased

What are we supposed to do right now? Several CC-150 Polaris planes are doing patrol flights near the Ukrainian border right now. That’s about as much as we can do right now

Commando 07's comment wasn't about the aircraft, but its _civilian_ crew. The aircraft is owned by a private company based in Russia. And because the Russian-registered aircraft operators fall under the 'closed skies' sanctions implemented following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the aircraft are the only things being barred from movement, not the crews. The crews are free to return home.
You're correct about the aircraft leased by Russian operators from Airbus/Boeing et al which are being held by Russia in retaliation. Unlike the west however, the problem for the Russians is being able to utilise those aircraft with no spare-parts beyond what they already have in their local supply chains - they can't order parts [directly] from abroad. (The Russians may try to circumvent by having operators of the same type aircraft in friendly countries supply Russian operators, but those 3rd party operators, by doing so, may jeopardise their own supply of spare-parts from Airbus/Boeing.)
Furthermore, the airlines who have leased those aircraft will (after the war) be forced to pay their lease fees (and penalties if any) or suffer the continuing sanctions of being barred access to western skies/airports.

That's not a fine. All aeroplanes at an aeroport are charged for services. This includes staying the night. It's like a hotel. This plane would likely make that 100k back within a month of work. I also wouldn't be surprised if aeroport's often lessened services to companies that struggled to pay under certain circumstances.
I hope this plane ends up as scrap metal.

I wonder why they still teach us that bullying, violence, and theft are not the answer. Sanctions take time. It's only been 5 months and Russia's cash reserves are running out. This stuff doesn't happen over night. Give it a year or two, if they make it that long.
