Steinmeier's Christmas message: 'What is the meaning of freedom?'

- In his Christmas TV message, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier looked back at the year, and picked out some of the highs and lows - and put his finger on some difficult questions.
2021 has been an exhausting year for Germany.
On the political stage, the Merkel era ended, and September's general election marked a turning point. The President's Christmas message praised the democratic handover of power in what he called "an atmosphere of mutual respect."
But it was also the year when the Taliban swept to power across Afghanistan - bringing post-war Germany's largest overseas military operation to an end. Western forces pulled back and the Bundeswehr flew home. To many it looked like failure. Steinmeier acknowledged that, as well as other clouds on the international horizon.
But the president's message - as is traditional - was also one of hope. He praised the solidarity people showed during the severe summer floods in Germany - especially the volunteers who helped with the clean-up - who gave money and time so the rebuilding could begin.
As the year ends, the COVID-19 crisis still looms over national life. Protests against government rules have flared up across Germany. But Steinmeier said that even from the pandemic, positive lessons can be learned.
In his address, the President even posed a philosophical question: What is freedom? He suggested it sometimes means accepting restrictions in order to help others.
That notion of solidarity and sacrifice may be needed still, in the year ahead.

Thank you for the captions. I don't like it when voices are dubbed over; I'd much prefer reading the interpretation while hearing his own voice and the emotion of his delivery. I wish you'd do this for all the news interviews, too.

The meaning of freedom is absence of coercion or the threat thereof
Question everything: That's a shallow and selfish definition of freedom.
Great speech, also feels genuine. I too hope, there will be less tension in the Middle East and Eastern Europe, that Germany will support the withdrawal of NATO bases and troops from near the Russian border and work for peace and a better environment with Russia included.

So, in the spirit of Christmas, do as we tell you. Trust perhaps is more crucial than critcal thinking. Cooperation is to be directed from leadership, the methods then must be assumed correct and for the good of all. But I feel I must remind everyone who heard this speech that each of us, alone, is responsible for our own moral standard. An idea that will become more clear and meaningful as this corrupt world rolls.

I think it should be investigated if the state now and then is legislated with the Bible written as a story. I think the Democrat Party can be a consciously misleading party name with all parties belonging to the Conservative Party, as current political democracy and socialism can only be about going more toward the middle, eg. social democrats. The reason may be that the president wants to govern the people with full immunity together with the chancellor (origin, The Roman Empire), government, parliament, congress, cabinet, and Supreme Court with functional immunity, personal immunity for law decisions and actions, even with the misleading word professional politician.
I think the people should consider voting for a real democratic party with an independent state formation to investigate if the president, chancellor (origin, the Roman Empire), government, parliament, congress, cabinet, and Supreme Court overall may be guilty of a violation of democratic rights with misleading elections, economic crimes, violation of human rights with class society for adults and children, serious environmental crime (force majeure).

Can someone from Germany please explain the accuracy of the English translation? When Steinmeier uses the phrase my "fellow Germans", would it have been more accurately translated as my "fellow countrymen"? I am very aware that there is a lot of disagreement over the differences between Germanic people and German citizenship. Exactly how inclusive/exclusive is Steinmeier's speech? Btw, similar discussions also happen in New Zealand, when people argue over the Maori phrase "tangata whenua" (people of the land), which carries strong suggestions of "people who *firstly* belong to this land".
Yup, he said fellow countrymen, or "fellow countrypeople/countryfolks" (Landsleute) to be more precise, since countrymen (Landsmänner) would exclude specifically only adress men in German.
I would say countrypeople is rather neutral when it comes to inclusiveness, because it doesn't necessarily refer to any genetic or historic Germanic roots...
Since "Germans" kinda are natives in their country this issue is obviously on another level compared to New Zealand.
But he was definitely inclusive in another way:
Pretty much every German noun has a gender (masculine, feminine or neutral). There are some ways to approach this when you talk about people:
1) use the "generic masculine", which gramatically describes males and females (but is seen as uninclusive, since you only say the masculine gender)
2) mention the masculine and feminine word, or use the combination of both by adding the female ending to the masculine word (both could be seen as little interrupting in a sentence)
3) use a different word that has a neutral gender or no gender because it only exists on plural (like countrypeople)
But throughout the speech he used an "interesting" mix of male and female articles, so he randomly said "male scientists" or "female doctors", which doesn't really solve the underlying issue of not thinking of both geders when you hear the word. At least it's a rather equal apprach, that doesn't interrupt the flow of the speech in any way.

The meaning of Freedom is being able to do what you want when you want and with who you want, coupled with being able to go where you want. Not being coerced into having an injection you don’t want, being able to make choices when the occasion arises etc etc! The list goes on and on!!

@Dominic GD ironically (or not depending on your opinions) anarchy as an utopian concept would have a lot of rules, just internalized. if you want a society to "work" you need rules, ideally not dictated by some exterior actor, but by the society's main component : mankind, or a let's find a better word, to emphasize the responsibility part, like, "citizen" or something.

The speach was on Cristmas time. Christmas is about Jesus. The Lord! He came țo save us from our sins. And He is coming back in the clouds to get His Bride Home. While in the Earth will be 7 years of wrath of God upon this world. And then He will be back with us the Bride to rule from Jerusalem for a 1000 years. Read your Bible dear Mr Prezident.
