    C&C feels like the Good parts from 3rd edition, meets OSR Basic , with the extra clases from AD&D thrown in. You could call it OSR updated. I just love it.

    I am so ready for the 8th printing to come out. My dad has been running a 1st edtion AD&D game for me and his group. I think the rules and everything my dad will love. I am loving the rules as I read the pdf. I want to run it for my friends sometime.

    Many people stress a lot about the rolling system of the SIEGE engine and the "problematic" Perception(Wisdom) checks for Clerics and Rogues. But they forget that the game is totally playable like an OSR game with few ability checks, rulings over rules, player skill over character skill, etc The engine is only there to help streamline in a consistent way if you need to roll for anything. Saving Throws functioning like attribute checks is a nice and easy way to adjudicate situations. The Challenge Base values being based on primary attributes also represents very well class and character proficiency. Also, this is a very modular and flexible game. You can add skills, combat maneuvers, headshots, spell resistance if you want! But if you don't, it functions very well still. You feel like you can modify the game without breaking the inner intermingled systems since they are very much decoupled from one another. I didn't have the chance to play the game yet, but I'm preparing a session for it soon. From what I've read and seen, it looks like it would play very much like my typical S&W game but I wouldn't confuse my (usually new to the hobby) players with "rolling equal or under for ability checks", "rolling equal or above for saves and attacks", "rolling a d6 for certain things", and "rolling a d100 for other things". Consistency does help alleviate confusion at the table and the fact that this game is still modeled around AD&D really excites me.

    As a GM/referee, I would like to hear you talk about some old school - back to basics play aids in addition to core rules like B/X, C&C, etc.- World settings and adventure modules that you like and any suggestions you have to improve their use at the table.

    Have you checked out the current Kickstarter TLGs has going for the 8th printing? The cover is a homage to the original AD&D players handbook cover.

      @@questwise4077 replied :) I'm running a KAP game right now. It's truly a unique game, one of those rare games where role and roll go hand in hand. I had some amazing storyline pop up from passions and traits, and if you start playing along with families and court politics, it's truly a grand saga game. Very much tailored for campaign play. The community is very cool too. And we gonna get a 6th edition soon that has been presented as the definitive KAP edition

    My OSR group just finished a mini campaign of C&C, the PCs got to 3rd or 4th level when we stopped. We liked everything about the game, it is very much in line with OSR, BUT the two things we did not like were a) at 1st level the PCs are really, really poor at doing anything outside of their two or three primary stats, and b) the healing rules as written are brutal. It’s not a particularly lethal game, but when you are knocked to negative hps getting back to consciousness takes either lots of time or multiple magical healing to get you back to 1 hp. It feels to me in playing it like a better explained 1st edition AD&D.

    • @matthewkirkhart2401
      @matthewkirkhart2401 3 года назад

      @@simulation5627 wow, I hope you enjoy it! If you like 1sr editions AD&D, you will like C&C. The saving throw mechanism is particularly clever, especially after you get past 1st level or so and do not need to roll an 18on a d20 to pass. It is essentially a leaner and cleaner 1st edition AD&D.

    • @18ps3anos
      @18ps3anos Год назад

      "at 1st level the PCs are really, really poor at doing anything outside of their two or three primary stats"
      Roll less! Problem solved. Roleplay over Rollplay. That's a foundation of OSR play that shouldn't be disregarded just because you are using SIEGE. Use rolls only if they are really needed, and in that case, beating a 18 with +3 or +4 is still 30%/35% chance of success.
      Many people play B/X without any ability checks, possibly only for thieves. No reason for people to ignore this idea when playing C&C.

    • @matthewkirkhart2401
      @matthewkirkhart2401 Год назад

      @@18ps3anos I agree, fewer rolls is a solution. I was trying, and clearly did so poorly, to juxtapose C&C against something like AD&D or Moldvay when one does decide to require a roll. In this case it does tend to in my experience anyway play out differently with C&C than those earlier games. Our characters in those non-class attributes had +0 adjustments from having a 10 or 11. Therefore we needed an 18+ to succeed. Same situation in, say, Moldvay when the optional roll under the attribute on a d20 has obviously a much greater chance of success. But I don’t disagree, we used to play Moldvay without attribute checks, and there is no reason not to also do so in C&C.

    • @18ps3anos
      @18ps3anos Год назад

      @@matthewkirkhart2401 oh that's a fair comparison. Roll under ability score is indeed in player's favor. Don't forget that you should add your level in attribute checks in C&C.

    • @matthewkirkhart2401
      @matthewkirkhart2401 Год назад

      @@18ps3anos Yes, we did add level, but at 1st level ... brutal to pass those 18+ checks with a 10 attribute score. But you are correct, we ended up just not requiring very many and playing like we did back in 1980 and just not do that many rolls outside of combat and critical saving throws. I actually think the C&C mechanism for these rolls, though, is quite elegant. I like it a lot.
