I like them but I hope they do some alternate covers in the style of the 7th and 8th printing as they were also very good and more C&C as opposed to AD&D.
Been playing cnc for 10 years. I’ve loved every minute of it. As a service member, I can attest, they are generous to their fellow brothers (and sisters) in arms. I would contradict you in 1 point. Converting adventures from one system to cnc. I have had no issues converting adventures regardless of system. You may have to spend a few extra minutes at the planning table, but converting an adventure from any system (or edition) is quite simple.
Castles & Crusades is a great game by a great company. There is a reason Gygax called it the natural successor to AD&D. I have been running a C&C campaign for about a year and a half and C&C makes me feel like I am actually playing D&D again. FYI, those tribute covers are here to stay and there are more coming.
I've used C&C for Greyhawk & Forgotten Realms 1e as well as Scared Lands from 3e. Both worked out really well. It's been my favorite 'version of D&D' for a long time.
Simply the best D&D clone on the market. Well in my opinion just much better than that 5th edition Magic the Gathering clone that Hasbro produce. The game mechanic works well and it doesn't take two hours to write a character or need to you pay a web page to keep the PCs up to date. It's very clear and very playable.
Getting ready to start my first C&C campaign. I’m going to run Goodman Games’ Saga of the Dragon Cult, which was an AP for 3.5, but it doesn’t look hard to convert and their adventures are top notch. Gotta do something with all these DCC modules for 3.5.
C&C is wonderful, but I do not think anyone is "shackled" to old school rules, especially from nostalgia, given that about 75% of old school gamers I play with are under 25!;)
The game is good, and the Siege Engine is fast at the table. I do wish EVERY character class had choices to make that would reflect their core attributes, and that editing sometimes makes High Gygaxian look clear and concise. I also wish the Monsters and Treasures book would be updated to the newer design language, because it’s so much easier to read than the fake parchment look.
I always say C&C is my OSR system. The reason why is you can use any OSR adventure using C&C, you may change the AC and exp for Monsters but that is not bad when you can almost use the adventure as is.
100% agree I've been running a C&C campaign for four years now and it has become my go to FTTRPG The rules are solid but flexible, they bend but they don't break and they are as straight forward a set of level based fantasy gaming rules as you are ever likely to see Less fiddly than PF 3rd 4th or 5th edition My only caveat is that occasionally some rules clarifications are not located with the rules in question and there's a lot of fluff, charming leftovers in the early games it seeks to take inspiration from I'm sure but less so from the point of view of a modern gamer Properly edited with an eye on clarity (something to be fair the book actually managed with it's spell lists.VERY easy to flick through) could reduce the page count of the player's book by a quarter and remove the confusion a system that simple shouldn't have but does because of how the rules are presented, and IMHO you would have THE PERFECT FTTRPG 🤘
Hi! One remark on the game/PHB: I own the 2004 print of 8010 (PHB) and I don't know exactly/i'm not sure, yet this old print has the classes run only up to level 12, while the later prints like the 1e-hommage-cover 8th/9th print include higher levels...
I like Castles & Crusades, I really do. Although there is a quibble about its qualification as a OSR or retroclone game, it was still very much a forerunner of the movement and has the same appeal. I do respect that they stick with the rules rather than change them with each new printing - it gives a sense of gaming reliability and has less power creep over time. I wish more companies would take this approach with their games. My only issue is that it isn’t ‘official' D&D still. As a collector, this does make a difference in terms of its shelf value. However, to play, I think it is a fun game in its own right.
Great review. I've been evaluating OSR systems (I did play D&D in 1991 and AD&D 1e/2e), but they feel a bit too primitive in some cases with too many negative play experiences (not a fan of super high lethality, but 5e is too far in the other direction). C&C looks like a solid mix between the old and the new, almost like 3.x if it was an evolution of AD&D not a complete revamp.
Nice video. I love how you've mastered the art of flipping through the pages whilst talking about the system. But you're making me want to spend all my money. Please stop :)
I believe the Troll's plan is to keep the beautiful covers in the next print run of the books. They are just removing some of the OGL references.
Nice to hear that!
The homage covers are now the standard covers, AFAIK.
I like them but I hope they do some alternate covers in the style of the 7th and 8th printing as they were also very good and more C&C as opposed to AD&D.
Their latest email says they hired a full-time editor (no more typos), layout tweaks, and removal of all OGL content.

I appreciate your service AND your choice in fantasy game product.
c&c. not cnc. very, very, very different things that need a lot of distinction
Very true, lol

I just ran my nephew and his friends through an OSE adventure using C&C and like it a bunch! ~ Jeff

Have fun! One of the big selling points of C&C is how easy it is to convert modules to the system.
17:30 I believe Chenault is pronounced Shen-o. At any rate, it would be in French.
They use the Arkansas pronunciation...Sha-NALLT. 😅
@@tylermorrison7051 I see. Thanks for the clarification.
Great way of describing it! I’m looking forward to my books and running this!
I love this game. The adventures are great too.
C&C is wonderful! Old school vibe w/o being shackled to old, busted rules for the sake of nostalgia. Siege engine is solid and easy to use.

Has anyone ever told you that you look like the wrestler Lex Luger? Thanks for highlighting this awesome game!
Thank you for this video. I am just getting into C&C. From what I've done so far, I am loving it.
Great to hear!
Does the Castle Keeper’s Guide have any optional rules to replace the Spell Slots system for magic?
There are a few different options for spell casting to replace the Vancian magic style. ~ Jeff
There's a mana system in the Castle Keepers Guide.
My new main system!
I always say C&C is my OSR system. The reason why is you can use any OSR adventure using C&C, you may change the AC and exp for Monsters but that is not bad when you can almost use the adventure as is.
Where do you get hardcover editions? I went to RPGdrive and only got digital.
The publisher.
Fun fact:
The creators son goes to my school, his name is Henry.
Great review, I now own the PHB and M&T, After Winters Dark setting and a few small adventures . Haven’t run C&C yet but it’s one my laundry list!!
100% agree

havn't even watched the vid yet, but I've loved C&C for years and this is the most validating thing I've seen in a while
It's a good game! 🤜🏼🤛🏼
Will there be sci-fi and post-apoc versions or additions?
The Castle Keepers guide has rules and suggestions for playing other settings such as sci fi.
The Trolls are preparing Amazing Adventures 2E which will be compatible with C&C. That is likely to take care of the sci-fi part.
They have Amazing Adventures for pulp gaming and Starseige for sci-fi.
My favorite D20 version.
Mine too.
This is my go to game. Love the simplicity of play, but the old school feel. Easy to convert 1E or D20 stuff on the fly too.

I keep hearing about castles and crusades, maybe I should get it. I love the covers that pay homage to 1e.
2:43 I thought it's based on 3rd edition? At least that's what google says.
It is based on 3rd edition. It’s tone however is very much AD&D.
What are the different settings for C&C
Very nice video! I’ve shared it with my group, hoping to win them over from 5e for our Planescape campaign!
Fingers crossed!
is it true that there are too much typos and incoherent rules?
I would say there are typos throughout but I can't say any truly incoherent rules that I recall. ~ Jeff
Is this easy to get into??? I’ve never played D&D either but curious to play this or D&D
Just as easy, if not easier, to get into as any other major fantasy roleplaying game. ~ Jeff
Heard the company isn't woke at all, definitely worth supporting.
I got the castles & crusades humble Bundle, I want to read it all but ADHD go brrrrr
🤘💯😌
The new editions appear to have covers by Anato Finnstark, an artist famous for Magic The Gathering and Lord Of The Rings art.
Nice video. I love how you've mastered the art of flipping through the pages whilst talking about the system. But you're making me want to spend all my money. Please stop :)
Glad you enjoyed it!
