How to get started with Castles & Crusades based on how I approached the game. Check out my previous look at the game here: • A look at Castles & Cr...
Thanks for casting some more light on this outstanding system. I have an extra copy of M&T of Aihrde if you're interested in the Trolls campaign setting. it's yours
Have the three main books but haven't cracked them open yet. Maybe I'll start reading tonight. I'm GMing Saturday and haven't picked a system to run yet lol.
Nice! I've tried to explain to my friends what C & C is. Some have called it an OSR type system, but really it's not. I like that you say it's not really a rules light system either.. Myself, I would call it a "rules flexible" system, or as you say, rules as you need it. The CKG, and also other stuff like the Expanding Classes book, and The Adventurer's Backpack add a lot more options to the game as well. I love it, as you have so much flexibility. I(n my opinion, you do more with C & C than you can with D & D, just because it is so simple and flexible. One thing I'm considering is using 5th Edition's "Advantage/Disadvantage" ( Kudos to the designers, that really is a stroke of genius.) mechanic where I can.
It's actually is a OSR system. OSR simply means it's a modern game built on the mechanics of older games In the case of Castles & Crusades. It's OSR 2nd gen. Generations of OSR. 1st gen = Retro clone / rules compilations. 2nd gen = A system built on classic systems but with new innovations and fixs. 3rd gen = a system based on classic systems with new innovations , fixes & some radical reworking of some sub-systems. Simple Example 1st gen : a game that has all the BECMI rules but is not called D&D 2nd gen : A Game with all BECMI rules but also has options to use ascending armor class , simplified leveling rules , splitting races from classes & ect. 3rd Gen : A Game built on BECMI with all it core rules and many variant options ( see GEN 2 ) but has a new magic system or classes system or etc.
Blood & Treasure 2nd edition is another system like Castles & Crusades but it has less rules and more classes, races and spells than C&C. So, it's rules light and options heavy. You should check it out. Its worth way more than the 25 bucks they charge for it.
I discovered this game very late - missed all the kickstarters. I fail to find any source of those books (apart from Players Handbook) in Europe. Which is a shame. :(
You know I have had the player guide through PDF on Drivethru for a bit (I think I picked up last year on a sale) and I have never really cracked it open. I will add it to the eternal pile. I have the good fortune of having work with downtime so I can read around 50 pages a day. Alas I never have enough time to run them, still we take what we can get.
I received this copy as a gift from a subscriber, but I believe it is the old edition of the game. The new edition is available for pre-order from the Troll Lord Games website I believe and the PDF can be found at DriveThruRpg.
C&C has some of THE best art. The Castle Keepers guide cover is proof. Puts men back into the light and shares the action with beautifully drawn women. I would not be surprised if the woke SJW punks of cancel culture hate it and attack Troll Lord Games constantly. TLG take my money and keep up the good work.
James Ward also wrote the FR Pools trilogy. Probably the best D&D novels ever (at least how good they are at capturing the feel of a well run table)
Been a fan of C&C since it came out. Great system! I never picked up the Castle Keeper's Guide, guess I need to fix that. Keep the videos coming!
I checked out the book , cause my friend ordered it and it's amazing, I am yet to play it

I would be honored. Please shoot me an email at: questwise1@gmail.com
And the artwork is top notch. I love, love, love the art - much more so than the major competitor imho.
That CKG is an AMAZING book!
Another excellent overview. Thanks again.

My fav game to make a "feels right" AD&D 1e type game. A lot of flexibility!
C&C is an outstanding game.
Nice video also.
C&C is awesome.

We've used Advantage / Disadvantage in our local games and it works very well without disrupting the game at all.

This sounds familiar... I may already have a pdf. I'll look into it. Thanks for the recommendation!

Oh no! Well I hope they rectify that soon!
Hi! I'll pass this on to Steve! Also, we constantly have new kickstarters coming out that supply you with many great books :)
