  • I usually don’t pull for units I consider “experimental” like Volo. But since he’s a favorite and most other people are skipping him because of him dropping post Anni and the low gem count, I figured I’d take the mantle to show off his versatility. Plus since I got shafted by Geeta, I figured I could use my Field coins on him. (I lost the footage of upgrading him though, which was unfortunate)
Volo is pretty much a combo of every Role (except Sprint) combined into one. Fairy Shift + Masterful Metronome for Strike, built-in Unfortuitous and other utility grid nodes for Tech, Sinnoh Solidarity, an offensive TM and a team-wide sync nuke in Circles for Support, and Sinnoh Circle (Def.) and Fairy Zone for Field. While this sounds OP, it’s balanced by the fact that Volo isn’t the best at any of these arc-types and each of his Role arc-types are flawed in unique ways.
That being said, his versatility is his biggest strength as having all these different playstyles can lead to some very fun and unique team comps. You can run him as tank, secondary support, or even as a nuker and all of them would be valid. Heck, I bet there’s still some strategies I didn’t even think of too. I never touched Overwhelm or Satisfied Snicker for example. Nonetheless, Volo is a very fun unit and I very much look forward to using him and experimenting more with him in the future. Enjoy!

0:00 Makes up for Geeta I guess
    0:44 Sync Nuke
Volo is one of those rare cases where I actually think his damage dealing playstyle is his worst. His dps is rng dependent and his nuke does as much as an average Strike nuke, even with his Circle up. Admittedly underwhelming, but I had to try it.
(Side note, I love how Volo’s sync is Togepi running into scene just to reuse SS Wally’s animation lol).
    3:47 Zone Setting
Volo can set Fairy Zone twice. Once when using B Metrnome and once with his EX Sync. While the two use restriction in rough, he’s is still a solid Zone setter. I probably could’ve used a weaker Fairy-type, but it’s Kalos so I can’t risk it.
Palentines Dawn is currently the only unit to both buff Sinnoh Circle (Def.) and activate Volo’s type skill, so she’s a very good unit to pair with him.
    6:24 Sinnoh Solidarity Tanking
Volo is a solid tank with max Sinnoh Circle (Def.) buffs. Unfortunately, this stage uses a lot of Steel moves, so I did have to pray for a good rotation for Volo to survive until sync. Glad I was able to run him on a team with SSR Cynthia, since I just HAD to run him with Giratina at least once.
9:03 Secondary Support + More Zone Setting
Volo can act as type of “support enhancer” by having Sinnoh Circle (Def.) help a support take hits better. SSA Cynthia is probably unnecessary for this, but but I wanted Sinnoh tank, and she was the only one who could tank Kalos hits.
    12:49 Buffing Psudeo-Tanks
Three Cynthia’s in a row! I wanted to try a clear with Bertha in mind as the tank, since she’s a solid tank even without Volo’s Circle to help. That being said, I definitely should’ve just did this clear on-type, because finding the right rotation of moves for this clear was exhausting.
    17:10 Dual Strike Support
For some reason Volo has TM MPR, so he can easily set up Dual Strike for pretty much any damage dealer. And since Fire Special Stadium is up, I figured I’d run a dual Fire team. I feel like this strategy is at its strongest in Rally, but it’s a pretty valid CS strat too if you’re playing rushdown.
    20:10 Gauntlet Tanking
I was tried his Solo against Bulu orginally, but it’s very luck dependent + I’m 90% sure his EX Role is required for it. So I decided to pair him with a damage dealer instead and let him tank the stage. SS Leaf pats well with Volo’s TM, plus her Potions and Gradual Heals helped him tank for longer.
    24:29 On-Type LG
Volo is actually a decent Latias counter. He’s super effective from Bar 2 onward and his passives give him Piercing Gaze and Unfortuitous. He just needs a support to tank and heal for the team. I chose Alcremie since it covers all those bases + activates Type Skills. I probably could’ve swapped Vigilance for Unfortuitous 4, but better not risk getting crit in case I missed a quad-que.
    30:40 Unfortuitous Utility
I used it in previous clears, but Unfortuitous 4 is genuinely such a great LS for Volo. Considering he has a guaranteed Unfortuitous in one of his passives, having a chance for a second debuff can give him good utility.
I wanted to try it against Registeel, because of the current Gauntlet. But Volo’s weak to Steel, so I just sleep chained Terrakion instead. I tried using other Sleep users, but I just used Melony. Her Recuperation was also nice if the sleep chain broke.
    35:40 Circle Gaming!
Not much to say about this one. I just wanted to try all my Circle units on the same team, since Circles don’t cancel each other out. Probably would’ve been better to use against a physical stage, but Silver and Nate demolished and that’s all that matters.
