Eh, maybe if you didn't go to high school in the late 90s--Cake was definitely not underrated in my experience, between Fashion Nugget and Prolonging the Magic (especially the latter) I heard and saw references to Cake constantly. I was in college when Comfort Eagle came out, and while it seemed less beloved it's one of my favorites.
The deadpan delivery juxtaposed with the smooth funk is timeless.

The great bass guitar is what I have always liked best about this band. The contrast with the other instruments is great as well but the bass lines are what makes it so good.

I first heard this song on the radio, pulling into my garage of the house I was about to be divorced from, and just sat in the car listening to the whole thing, in almost stunned silence. Cake was one of the first bands I added to my Zune playlist. Yeah, that was a while back. I still enjoy listening to them at age 67.
cake has one of the most distinctive sounds ever. and they take themselves less seriously compared to the music. I dont think I would recognize them on the streets, or know their names.
Cake albums are really "must have" in your shelf. They're lyrics are jewelry, well interpreted orally AND musically. As they're universal in content...they don't wear.

It was 2004 and I was combing through CD's (wow, I feel old) when I saw Pressure Chief. I had heard a few songs by CAKE ( Never There among them) but did not know who the artist was. To this day, I have no idea what made me buy the CD but I did. I listened to it from start to end. Not only did I love every single song, when I heard the rooster of instruments utilized and just the sound itself, I had never heard anything like it. Still haven't. Their underrated genius's with something sorely lacking than now and always in the music industry and that is talent. Thank you CAKE for the music. It is truly one of a kind ❤

This band is like fine wine aging over time.. they are so fucking good at the start, so why after all these years does the old music sound even better to me than the last time... this song, is one of my favorites from cake, this and going the distance, reason being, most of my life i went the distance and the person i was looking forward to meeting, never there. that was me in high school, i was told to wait for someone, who never showed up. then i graduated and moved on, they showed up later, when i was in college. they had no explanation for ghosting me for so long.

Much as I dislike my soon to be ex-wife, I'm grateful to her for turning me on to this awesome band! The two times I saw them live in Seattle and LA were the best live shows I've been to! I don't remember much of the LA show specifically, but I know I had a great time. This band attracts a great audience!
