Best interview yet. What a character! Sports were different back then, everything from darts players to football players had far more personality. Peter Manley was like one of those super difficult bosses you had to beat on an old arcade machine hehe. Everything is too professional now and full of rules and video refereeing. Great interview

Ive always loved Peter Manley, he lived in the city that i live in and his antics were hilarious, i once watched him practicing in the Portland snooker club and he was just hitting tops repeatedly i can't recall him missing it once, i actually stopped watching the football match to watch him practice
I live in Maryport but I've met him once, bought a set of darts off him. Didn't see him for long but seems like a nice fella. I'd hate to play him though 😂

Love these! Very interesting that Peter talks similarly to Wayne Mardle in his interview. Both saying they considered themselves the best player after Taylor and they could beat anyone on their day. It speaks a lot to a successful mentality and also to how good Taylor was.

Great interview, several years ago we had peter to present our trophies at finals night and play some of us , he was the best pro we ever had he was great fun and It was a fantastic night , top man thanks fir he memories peter
It was always a joy to watch him play. I remember people being snarky about him at the time because he'd go to the finals and then lose without winning a set multiple times. I always felt that instead of making fun about him, we should respect the fact that he even got to multiple finals.

Bit of added context to the Lewis incident. It was 1st game on. The MC always welcomed the audience at the Circus Tavern and ran through the matches one by one. Basically he told the audience that Manley was a cracking bet to beat a young Adrian Lewis at 5/2. There was a ladbrokes booth in the CT that then laid this 5/2 to 75% of the audience including myself. We all gave Manley a great reception and poor old Ady was getting stick left right and centre. No doubt contributed to his walk off.
@GA001 PDC would give anything to swap they're crowd for actual darts fans that the BDO had.... and give the sport back to the people a little more put more events on normal TV...also worth a mention is the best players the pdc have ever had are all ex bdo players that tells you everything you need to know about PDC apart from last year They have created littler and he is the only one a great darter they've produced but time will tell how far he can really go ..humphries nowhere near a dominant player he would need a run of several years on top just to get a mention with the greats 😂
Met Peter and his Wife at a charity fun day at Ruskin Drive 10 years ago, just before he packed the darts in... top bloke, could talk about the game for hours on end! Brought so much joy as a kid watching him wind everyone up 😂 the bull he missed for the 9 darter at Blackpool was unreal!
Absolutely brilliant Pete’s a proper character a lot would say a cheat but definitely not it’s a high pressure situation their In at that level and people become highly strung under the pressure and react at the slightest thing like he did by walking off against Taylor for clicking his darts etc etc cheating would be pushing someone while throwing or turning the light off (exaggerated) but you get my point ,it was putting the odds in his favour I’d call it gamesmanship Glad to see he’s doing well the game needs characters
Always just saw him as the bad guy…. And maybe from a sporting point of view he was borderline sometimes, but this was fantastic! Just a guy telling his story with no airs or graces, no bigging it up. Could have listened to him all day. He really is a great storyteller. Rare I listen to podcasts all the way through, but did with this. Fantastic.
I remember having one of the best nights with one dart Peter Manley he was in the premier league first couple years when it just started. He played came in to the vip room back then the vip room was were the players came to eat drink and see there family but everything was free the bar included I got chatting to him at the bar he was with his wife anyway Wayne Mardle was there with his friends we started to drink shorts Peter and his wife drank doubles Bacardi and coke we got hanging drunk and was drinking and dancing tell all hours soon after the free bar was stopped great laugh out he was a proper funny guy never stopped laughing all night. Ally pally memories.
Absolutely brilliant. Honesty, no bullshit there. Yes he admits wanting to put opponents off, he is/was not the only one. I see it in darts today at all levels, including my local league, right up to big TV tournaments. It can be subtle, but it is effective. I'd much sooner spend a few hours with him than Taylor, despite Taylor being the best ever. You will get more honesty in 5 minutes with Peter Manley than you would get in 5 hours with Phil Taylor. as things stand Today at 13 yo my daughter has an unhealthy lifestyle, is a Competitive Bagpiper for Methil and District Pipe Band, loves swimming and has a Dad who has been addicted to smoking Heroin for 10 years and by the end of this Summer 2023 was even shifting an Oz a day but is now 3 Months into what ultimately be a 4 month complete recovery and. Peter. Your interview is THE catalyst to remind me that our joint love of swimming is the final puzzle-piece. Cheers Brother.
As a kid I loved taylor so manley was the enemy 😂.. Shane there's less characters and antics these days.. I was enthralled by the characters back then it seemed all about pressure and nerve, it doesn't seem the same today or it doesn't come across as tense on TV these days
He wasn't that much around when I started watching darts. The big guns were always Taylor /a young MVG / Anderson / Wade / Lewis and surprisingly, Andy Hamilton on the Telly. "One Dart" was rarely seen on TV. But when it comes to antics...... He's got nothing on Lewis. I think Aidy has had far more suspensions or butt-slaps from the PDC than Peter ever got.
These guys are like school children in the playground. Taylor got to mvg as much as mvg got to Taylor Thats what winners and rivals are like.Taylor is the greatest ever .

Great atmosphere. Quiet when throwing and enthusiastic when appropriate. I miss watching the matches there. It seemed like people loved the darts.
