- In this video, I answer the most asked question I get. Which is how can you get consent to fly on a beach, park or reserve in New Zealand.

My drone has 20km range and can fly 500 meters height +
Good luck finding out where I'm piloting from.
As with most things in NZ they've gone crazy with the rules. Way too crazy.
thanks a lot. Im a german Tourist who will visit in a few days. Watching these 4 Minutes gave me more clarity than a lot of research did. Im now sure im not breaking any laws as soon as i start my drone. Great Video!
Glad it was helpful. Have fun flying
Good one 👍
Great video man! Keep it up 💯
Thanks Christian!
Sorry, what is the page with the map he uses to see if he can fly the drone ?
Hi Thomas. Do I need to submit every flight ten days before that supposed to happen? For a tourist who would like to travel as much as he can, it's nearly impossible to plan this ahead. Plus I do not know the country so I cannot tell in advance where I want to use my drone. I'll be able to decide once I'm outdoor, I see the particular area and I consider it beautiful enough to start filming with a drone but before that, sitting in a room on the other side of the world, I think that's impossible..
I totally agree with where you are coming from. As long as you aren't near an airport or restricted airspace you should get a flight number within 30 minutes or so after submitting. But from experience I can say if you are flying somewhere near to an airport it can take a few days or so.
And remember not only do you need consent for the airspace you wish to fly through but also the land you wish to fly above.
It can be really hard to find places to fly in New Zealand but when you do and get the shoot it is always worth it.
Most councils are open to flying drones as long as you don't fly over people, buildings, and aerodomes (controlled or restricted airspace). DOC will not allow you to fly over national parks. Everywhere else is OK to fly a drone.
I appreciate your comment, but you must have consent about the land you are flying at all times, whether Public lands, like a park or beach. Or you are flying above private land like a farm or house.
I have made a video going over the basic drone rules. Even though it is from a couple of years ago the rules are still up to date

Happy flying
Ill be visiting new zealand for 5 weeks in 2 months and im really thinking about getting a drone before. I dont wanna pay 65 new zealand dollars for every little spot i wanna film
Sounds like a great idea. Just remember the rules are the rules and to get lost of practice before you film somewhere epic!
I’m trying to fly around Muriwai and Te Arai . Unfortunately, they seem to be in regional park zones. Do I need to apply for permission to fly?
Thomas~Woohoo. so beautiful !have a great day- :))
Thank you! 😁
In australia there ae apps that tell you where it is ok to fly. Also isn't the permissions to fly coded into the dji drone software?
Good point but I live in New Zealand and here in New Zealand we have a different system than our friends from across the ditch😄
Hello! I will be traveling to NZ in a few months, and I have researched the information on drone use on DOC's website, but you mention the "local council" as well. How does one contact the local council - is there a map that shows the different councils in NZ, or a website you can refer me to? Thank you for the drone information - I just want to make sure I'm doing everything legally!
Hello, @jenniferblakeny1581 great question. You can go to www.lgnz.co.nz/local-government-in-nz/new-zealands-councils/ for a list of all the different councils and regens in New Zealand. Most of the time you can find all the information you need e.g. a map saying which parks, beaches and green spaces you can fly above. if not there should be a phone number or email you and send any questions to.
Best of luck, Thomas
Hi. I am in Auckland. I haven’t called council to get a permit yet. the Airway app shows local council contact but it doesn’t show how to. Is there any procedure when i call them? or paperwork?
The best thing to do is go to their website and search for drones. Try looking at www.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz/parks-recreation/get-outdoors/drones-unmanned-aerial-vehicles/Pages/default.aspx
You might not need a permit.
Is it okay if I use the clips shown in the first few minutes in a video of mine?
Hi, Thanks for asking but I am not interested in having my content reused.
oh yeah no worries!
I can’t believe the Kiwi accent. It’s sounds so bizarre.
Ha ha, Yup that is what happens when you live at the bottom of the world
