I’m missed how you addressed the one uneven corner? Do you glue jamb extensions? Why did you shim on bottom and if you made casing wider how do seams on jamb extensions align?

What do you do afterwards with all that exposed pine window jamb? You just caulk and paint over it?

As always, its been great watching and learning from you. From bathroom renovation to now window trim installs. Always fun and educational. This window trim install however I'm going to have to differently. Knowing my luck, the frame I'll build wouldn't fit as smoothly as yours did. Going to go with one side at a time. Let me know if you think that would be an issue. Some day however...

I would have liked to of seen you place the measurement marks on the trim itsself. Are you making the mark for length, cutting the board flush, then cutting the 45 Deg angle? Thanks for replying.

If I were to extend an exterior door jamb from 4 9/16 to 6 9/16, would I put the extender on the inside or outside of pre-hung jamb?

Good video! What is your recommendations for similar application, but one that avoids the gap between the jamb and the extended jamb? Biscuit joints and sanding? What about matching grain - is that reasonable, or is paint the way to go to hide seam?

You could always remove the wood from the window as well and install a much larger jamb extension.
Can you explain the shim pack a little more? I was wondering how you would shim with the trim attached. Is it trial and error?
Great video! Installing window trim ,existing widows. Builder cut cills short . Standard window trim is to wide, do all the cills need be replaced? DYI suggestions?
Lost my lower eye lid due to skin cancer. Trust me there is always somebody in worst shape. I saw somebody worse shape than me. Makes you thankful for what you have.
Will it be seamless adding the jam extension to a preexisting one? I don't want to see the crack between them.
Hi Jeff. Good video. I’ve had that same style black eye while playing basketball in my younger days.... A question about the lower left and right corner of the framing. I see what looks like red tuck tape there. Is there not any framing in those two corners or was the tape wrapped around the framing?

I'm about to have mine replaced. I'm getting rid of the old glass block cubes that were cemented in and having a sliding one put in. They're gonna have to build a wooden frame n trim for it
I really like how the final result and fit turned out and was hoping I'd learn how, but I got lost with all the measurements with additions of 8ths and didn't learn it. I feel anxiety that I didn't understand what and why all the measurements were aiming for. I really want to learn this procedure. What key thing do I need to look at so I can get this ?

So we have this situation with a vinyl window....not wood jamb....in a bathroom (back wall next to the tub / shower)...what do you suggest??? :( and how do we "seal" the seam). the wall will be tiled and I wasn't going to put any "casing" or "trim"

Question is, I pulled up the carpet in my house to replace with laminate flooring. Well the 1st door I came to. The door jam is about 5/8” to short. I need to lengthen several jams. How is the best way to do this?

If I am building a box to but up to new vinyl window, should I take the widest dimension, rip the box, build and trim the box, then caulk between box and vinyl? 2 : Would gluing the trim to box be advised and biscuiting the 45 degree corners? and finally, all the rage these days seems to be but going corners with deeper headers cut proud of trim and cut on an angle.. your thoughts? Hi Mitch, thanks for the question. I would treat the vinyl just like you see the wood box in the video. Use an elastomeric caulk between 2 different surfaces so they don't crack. Biscuit joints can be a bit much if you are gluing but like my grandpa used to say. If you have the time to go a little overboard, that will never hurt.
Hey Jeff, we have 2x6 construction and are installing a std pre-hung door. How easy is it to pop off the brick molding and extend that exterior jamb the extra 2" we need? is that the best method? Thanks! Your videos are SOOOOO helpful.

Truth is Matt it really isn't that hard. Just need the right tools for the job.
Great video. This helped me build my own window box, and it turned out great! However, my window is nearly flush with the ceiling (I had to plane the top board down to 5/8” to be flush with the existing box). The drywall on the ceiling sags slightly leaving me with triangle gaps at the top two corners. I think I could clean up the top with some 1” quarter round, but I don’t think that will carry well around the rest of the frame. Ideas?
Hey Adam, not sure what you are dealing with but sometimes it is easier to close gaps by using drywall mud than carpentry. Or Caulking. Just a thought.Cheers!

Any advice for drywall that is not straight? It sticks out past the casing at some points and is recessed at others...
My window is just sitting on concrete with what appears to be construction adhesive. How do I go about making it look nice?

Hi! Thanks for your amazing videos. I have a question: my unfinished frame window looks like the one in this video BUT they left the bottom wood with an inclination (it doesn’t go straight to meet the bottom of the windows frame). Have you seen something like that? My question is: should I extend it just like this and leave that inclination? Or there is another way to do this? Tks in advance.
That is sometimes done to help the light into a room. I would keep the slope. Cheers!

I have one window that needs a jamb like you are doing in the video, but the other one has a jamb but it sticks out about an inch from the paneling...how to fix that?

Hey Jeff, I know you're a busy guy but just wondering if you know of a product that can be installed on a double sliding (horizontal) ground floor bedroom window so there's a way leave one side or the other slightly open for ventilation from a security point of view. Without it, can't really even sleep with it slightly open!
So disappointed. Any product ideas? I already made a trip to Home Depot because I think I may know of a way to make something that will work but a product would help maintain the clean look of the window:). Thanks and hope you guys are enjoying your summer!

Order a door for a 2x6 frame and plane down the 1 side about a 1/4 inch. This works well for me. Less time on the finishing too.
Great video, keep those fingers away from those 2 inch nails. Enjoyed the process of pre making the jam before installing. Great quality video with good concise explanations. Cheers

Nice video. Jeff, quick question. I'm planning on using some 1x4 for window trim. Going to be doing craftsman style like windows. Do carpenters usually leave the kinda sharp edges the boards have or knock the corner off a bit with some sand paper?

More demolition please. I think that's a really hard part as it can cause more damage and work if not done correctly. I would really like to also see reglazing or using those new products of epoxy on counter tops and tubs. Removing and buying new is quite expensive.
It looks ok far away, i would do the build outs separately then do the trim after, so i could place shims and secure the buildouts and insulate.Its the first time i have seen someone put the trim on the same time.
Done that a long time now. On jobs for plant lovers and flips I like to use a 1x8 sill and use crown for extra sill support and beauty molding under the 1x8. That window treatment and a few other ‘special’ touches have sold many other jobs cause the Jones have to have what the Smiths are showing off. Love your vids. btw, don’t let your daughter do eye makeup on you with Sharpie. Be brave and get her the GOOD stuff off mommies custom made walnut vanity. LOL

Never seen the whole frame built before installation!!! That was interesting, but looked more difficult. One must be very confident of measurement and math skills to attempt that process! Cool though!
Noticed his math was off a bit " 23", add 1/8 each side so well say 23 1/2" ". Like wtf. Just add another 1/4 for the hell of it?
Hello, why cant you use the table saw guide to rip your boards to the widths you are measuring?
the window is on an angle so each point is a different measurement.
What do you do if the depth is off by .5 of an inch on the ine side ?

I bet putting the casing on the extension for a better fit was just traded for a poor fit between the jambs leaving a step and or a gap also how can you properly spray foam and shim with trim preinstalled using that method ?, I noticed that was not done. I would have made sure the extension was fitted and nailed and foamed in then it would be normal install from there on, sure the casing is harder to fit perfect but its a better trade off IMO
First of all the building insulation envelope is already established and there is no need to add spray foam here.The reason for building first is to save time. A small step in the jamb accomplishes this with ease.

You don't route the inside edges for the trim reveal?
Also, always keep your hands at a distance that is twice the nail length. "Double feed" is not fun.
