Babies cry. And it’s brutal to hear as a mama. But, crying is one of baby’s main ways to communicate. So wouldn’t it be awesome if we could decipher those cries? Well, in this video, I’ll teach you how.
Taking care of a newborn sounds straightforward, right? Baby cries and you come to the aid with some love… a little rocking, a breast to nurse, or a fresh diaper. You can feel on top of the world when your baby quickly settles… but then you can feel like the worst mother ever when baby won’t stop crying!
Although the sound baby crying can break your heart, it is completely normal. This is how baby tells you they need something.
Now usually babies cry because they are either tired or hungry. But if feeding or rocking don’t work, it could be that baby is bored, gassy, too hot, too cold or in need of a new diaper. So it can be pretty overwhelming.
Well, luckily a few baby experts have found certain sounds and body gestures can give us a clue as to what they need…
So without further ado, let’s take a look at the 6 main reasons your baby is crying.
#1 Your baby is hungry: As I said earlier, this is probably one of the top reasons for tears… a hunger cry tends to have a waa- waa -waa sound, but the big giveaway here is that your baby roots for the breast or puts hands in his mouth. Soothing a hungry baby is easy: offer the breast or a bottle.
#2 Your baby is tired: Who doesn’t want to have a good cry when you’re downright exhausted? A tried baby may have a cry that comes and goes, or two short breaths followed by a long wail. You’ll notice your baby blink a lot, rub his eyes, yawn, kick his legs, and flail his arms. Overtired babies are harder to settle, but you can employ all of your normal bedtime tricks here: shushing, nursing, rocking.
#3 Your baby is overstimulated: An overstimulated cry sounds like the tired cry -- long and hard. But the body language is what sets the two apart. An overstimulated baby may try to turn his head away from the commotion. You’ll also see flailing legs and arms. To soothe an overstimulated baby, remove yourself and your baby from whatever environment is bothering your baby. Head up to your nursery, rock her in a chair, and sing softly or do gentle shh-ing sounds until she feels safe and calm.
#4 Something hurts: A painful cry comes without warning and there’s no mistaking it. It’s a piercing cry. For body language, your baby’s body is tense and rigid, and they probably have pulled their legs up to their chest. Of all the cries, this is the one we want to soothe the most, but it’s the hardest to fix. How to help your baby depends on what’s causing the pain. If it’s gas, for example, you cry bicycling his legs, bouncing him on your knee, or massaging his tummy.
#5 Your baby is cold: The body language for a cold cry is easy to spot: quivering lips, goosebumps, shivering, cold hands and feet. Of course, wrapping your baby in a blanket will do the trick, but I love a little skin-to-skin time. It’s warm and soothing.
#6 Your baby is too hot: Panting, whiny cries accompanied by a hot sweaty baby are the tell-tale signs of a too-hot baby. Remove a layer of clothing, get outside for fresh air, or open the windows to get air flowing.
So now that we’ve run through the 6 reasons of baby crying, if you still struggle with soothing baby it may signal a deeper issue, like a colic, acid reflux, or GERD. If you suspect that’s the case, these natural remedies can help:
Supplements for baby: Gripe water, probiotics formulated for babies, and gas drops. If your breastfeeding, you could try drinking fennel or chamomile tea or eliminating dairy from your diet.
But, really, it’s always best to talk to your child’s pediatrician to get help for your baby. Never give your child any remedies until speaking with your doctor first.
OK, so although uncomfortable, remember that crying is baby’s way of communicating with you.
Do what you can to soothe your baby and meet his or her needs stat. If crying seems related to pain or colic, contact your child’s pediatrician ASAP.

Another video with no examples. I’ve read descriptions. Those are useless. Would it be that difficult to include some actual examples of babies crying?

Thanks for the explanations. Those would have been much more useful though if we could actually hear examples. Hearing how a hungry baby cries is much more useful than "he cries like wah wah"

You're so welcome! Every baby's cries may sound very different so it really is most helpful to learn your own baby's individual cries ;-)

Yes!! We need examples 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ There are SO MANY videos claiming to explain babies cries, but hardly any of them have examples.
