One of the reasons "wake windows" and "leap" theories are so harmful, in my opinion, is because you are looking at the clock, or making presumptions of needs based on expectations, rather than actually getting to know your baby and their cues/body language. Ditch the wake windows, watch your baby!
Very true! I find wake windows helpful in providing a guide on when to start looking for tired signs, but as all babies are unique it is very important to follow their cues!
I get that, I somewhat had to depend on wake windows etc. I consider myself very in tune with people and animals, I'm good at getting ahead of a problem before it's obvious, but I could not read my baby for the life of me. I still can't, I just guess the need based on how long it's been

I think the goal was to have them on a perfect schedule, but babies don't work like that.
Knowing your babies leap or growth spurt periods is so helpful because they are way more fussy than normal and if you did not know why it can be really frustrating, because normal soothing methods are not working.
Love this video! I am a mom of 7, and I was proud that I could read the cues in the video, but I stumbled through learning this with my first few kids. If you are a new mom, this video is right on. I will add that in the early days when you are still learning, it is helpful to follow the general "eat, play, sleep" cycle. If they just woke up, it is time to feed them. Then they will be awake for a little while and you will know that if they start to get fussy they most likely are tired again. But once i learned these cues, there was a lot less crying (of course some babies are just fussier in general though). They will throw you for a loop when they have growth spurts, cluster feeding, teething, sick, etc. They will sometimes do an eat, play, eat, play, eat, sleep, or a super short sleep, then eat, and sleep right away again. But knowing the cues will help you sort it all out and help you avoid the problem of trying to feed a screaming baby - been there, it is hard to get them to latch when that upset. A problem that I have with my newborn is that I know her early tired cues , but she’ll REFUSE to sleep . No matter how much I prep or help her to sleep , she’ll just lay there and stare at me until she becomes over tired . HELP !!
Same boat! I have good luck putting my little guy in the baby wrap and doing a little bouncy walking. We're BF so that helps-- hard to cry with a boobie in your mouth! Sometimes I can nurse him to sleep, sometimes not.

Thank you Emma! This is a very useful video! Lately, my 3,5 month-old baby cries out like someone is hurting him before he falls asleep. I think I can read the early sleep signs and I start to put him to sleep the moment I see the signs, but he does not fall asleep and he starts to cry and his cries do not stop whatever I do. Eventually he gets so tired that he stops crying all of a sudden and in a few minutes he falls asleep. This is something we have been experiencing for the last 2-3 weeks. Before that, putting him to sleep was not that difficult. Do you think this could be temporary? Something to do with growth spurts maybe?
Try to hold him, kiss on his cheek and forehead, wipe his tears and then walk with him in somewhere where no sound, sleep music is playing on and very little light. Don’t put him on bed immediately after he falls asleep. Wait 20 more minutes before you put him on bed. It’s normal for babies. U can try another thing. Now you know exactly when he feels sleepy so everyday just few minutes before that time, sponge his body, give him lotion, change his diaper and dress, take him in a room where no noise except sleeping music, little light and then start breastfeeding and he will fall asleep. Wait for 20 more mins after he finishes his drinking milk.
Overtired and undertired can look similar. Sometimes I find our LO can throw out some cues before they are truly ready for sleep. If you try to put them down too early they will fight, same with too late (fun right!). Look up the appropriate wake windows for your LOs age and try and use those in conjunction with the cues. For 3.5 months it should be around 1.5 hrs (give or take 15m) in between naps - generally getting longer throughout the day. Before bed it can be up to 2hrs. Keep in mind, Shorter naps can lead to shorter windows. But if I were to guess without knowing your full situation, what your describing to me sounds like it could be undertired.

If we are at home, I take him somewhere where he can calm down, mostly to the balcony where it is cooler and quiet. He is OK if we are out during his sleep time. He has no trouble falling asleep in the open air. This is something I have observed recently. I think he is overtired because before his night sleep he stays awake for about 5 hours, which I find too much.
Mine does the same when he has a hard time falling asleep even if he is tired. I usually wrap him in a blanket and rock him to sleep and slightly brush my palm over his eyes
Please make a video about Throwing! When is it okay to throw? How to stop them from throwing things? Toys are getting broken and siblings are getting hurt in my home and saying “No!” And taking the toy does nothing! Please help us! He also throws everything from his crib/playpen and then screams for them!
@@Maiju86 He always throws soft toys. But then as soon as he has his hands on anything else, he throws it. The point is I want him not to throw everything or learn what is and isn’t acceptable to throw.
Gosh I wish I had seen your videos a few months ago when my baby was a month old. I think I wasn’t picking up on hunger cues and such and he would get fussy at the breast, unfortunately family who saw it told me I must have a low milk supply and should sub with formula. Now a few months later he will barely take the breast as the bottle is much easier and looking back I lm fairly certain my supply was ok
I thought the first one was obvious maybe I’m really good at reading but I automatically thought the baby looked somewhat distressed with the situation
What about showing they are hungry but then crying, kicking qnd pushing the bottle away. Then showing hunger cues a couple mins later eating a little and then doing the same thing😊
It is hard but hopefully this video gave you a little bit more of an understanding of how to combine newborn cues with the context in which they occurred.

Hi Emma, my baby opens her mouth wide when she's upset. And it appears to be her holding her breath for few seconds. How can I avoid this and for her not to do it again? Thank you
Some babies do that. I know it can be scary but if she is continuing to breathe then it isn't something I would worry about. But as always if you are concerned speak to your little one's doctor.
Shame we ignore the cues for toileting babies do this too. Hence why Elimination communication works and so many cultures use it, I find it sad we have lost that skill in our culture.
I tried it for a couple of weeks with my first and it never worked.^^ he didn't pull a face, didn't have any tension in his body, he just went no2 without any behaviour changes^^
@@wolfsmaid6815 it’s something that takes more then a couple weeks to work. It can take a long time to learn the cues you can also use natural timings. When the wake after eating transition times. Since we don’t come from an EC culture it will be harder for us. We don’t have wise grandmothers showing us

Hi! Rolling is a skill bubs can learn anywhere from 4 - 6 months, so I wouldn't necessarily be concerned at this point. It sounds like your little one is still building up her muscle strength in her arms to be able to lift her chest off the ground when lying on her tummy. So it's important to continue giving her lots of time lying on her tummy and back to help build these muscles. As always though, if you are concerned, check in with her doctor who can see her in person.
My baby makes the sound as if she is pushing something when breastfeeding, when sleep...as if she is pushing something or stretching....even after massaging her....what could this mean?
My newborn son wakes up around the same time every night, around 8 or 9pm. And he just goes NUTS!!! He doesn't take a pacifier, doesn't eat, doesn't fall asleep when we put him down and he doesn't need a diaper change. I work away from home so I'm trying to figure this out so I can pass the information on to my wife. She's at her wits' end every single night.

Give them something soft to throw. If they are very small, they don't understand what can happen - it's you who has to make the space safe.

Tell him to throw harder. Aim for siblings head. Baby is on its way to a QB scholarship.

My son often rubs his face on my chest when he lies on me for cuddle and won't stop.. does that mean he's just hungry?
It all depends on the context. If it has been a few hours since his feed then most likely but it could also be a tiredness sign.
