Bet you didn’t know how the HELLDIVERS 2 SEAF SAM Sites work

- SAM stands for Surface to Air Missile, and despite what the icon would have you believe, it ain't no microwave.
You can only find these bad boys on Automaton planets and they look like an ugly grey square on your map.
Your task is to activate it via the terminal.
Then, you wait for the launcher to rise out of the ground like a phoenix from the ashes.
Finally, activate the launcher subsystems and the SAM site will be online and ready to liberate!
Now, that SAM site is gonna try to shoot down Automaton dropships.
But here's the deal: it's got the range of my grandma's shotgun, just a couple hundred meters.
And since it can only fires one missile at a time it usually takes out a ship AFTER it’s dropped off reinforcements.
But every little bit counts in this war against the enemies of justice, freedom and sweet lady liberty.

You need to take a break lol, I can tell that shits rough on the throat
You can find them on tyramid planets
SEAF is pronounced SEE-AF, military abbreviations are pronounced by the sound of the letters 🙏
I would like to know more! I’m doing my part!
Well hey there Mr Torgue
Ya this needs a buff. Even the smallest SAMs have range measured in miles.
Its a Ukrainian surplus sam
@@dongeronimoI Sadly super earth targeting software is dumb as a box of rocks, as they should be in order to prevent socialist automaton sentience subroutines from infiltrating SEAF systems.
@@dongeronimoI😂😂😂😂
@@dongeronimoIyeah Russian sams aren’t the best…
they can only fit a single 1000lb bomb on their space fighter jet don’t expect them to have the best stuff
It fires the missiles using Windows Nine.
Don't you mean Windows XP?
Windows 98 without the 8?
They're still using SEFDs (Super Earth Floppy Disks) to load the software.
@@getfaktthat makes sense
@@getfakt😭😭 need to upgrade to SELFD (Super Earth Less Floppy Disks)
These really should be map wide.
Yea, given the travel time of the rockets that wouldn´t even be that strong. If you are further away the dropships would likely get the drop off before getting shot down.
Real sam sites can shoot miles and dropships fly in from off the map. I feel like the sam should at least be able to track it and then hit it just as it arrives at the drop point
They should code it so that after a certain distance the rockets just "appear" and destroy any ship it targets and have those ships delay the drop
@@JLG35X Sync issues, especially if the squads all over the place
@@watch.v-dQw4w9WgXcQ For sure.
So im not the only one who tought it was a microwave when i first saw this 🤣
No, you weren't
Legend has it there are still helldivers to this day that think it’s a microwave.
Am so glad am not the only that calls microwave
actually, it's the same thing, just both can cook some robots to ashes
They're also good at shooting down gunships.
How come a portable rocket launcher shoots supersonic projectile but a SAM site shoots missile that has the speed of a bicycle?
Someone at the Ministry of science didn't do his job worthy of tax money.
With the size of the rocket it takes time but those needs to be faster
Maybe it is cause of the 76 hours of 'rigurous' basic training SEAF military gets. Imagine going to a full 76 hours of training! Probably that is how long it took to make the code for the SAM sites, too. Dang!
Jokes aside, I think it is cause SEAF equipment is way behind in tech and Helldivers do get all the shiny new toys that are still under testing, which means we are basically lab rats. (That explains why our tech is infinitely superior in terms of shoof kabooms for maximum liberation, I guess).
Tax? You mean our mandated donations to democracy?
@@AndrewsArtDen To be fair, that's WAY longer than the amount of training helldivers get. :P
Speed is fine, its the range thats the issue
Everything is an ugly gray square on the map!!! 🤣
Exactly what I was thinking! But I took a screenshot and will now be studying the topographical footprint of various optional objectives.
eh after a while you start picking up which ugly gray squares are which, like the super samples and sites. Real issue is on certain maps where it just all blends together due to color or 1000 small formations, turning it into where's waldo. Not counting bug spores cause you aint finding anything in that anyway.
Real life: up to 10km range
In Helldivers: less than 500m
Democracy really is cheap, huh.
Bro that range rlly fucking surprised. I legit thought it was mapwide😤😠🥺😩😭😭
Up to 10km? SAMs of this size have ranges up to 150km (officially).
That's I'm reporting you for HIGH treason.
@@WildmanTrading The only person who committed treason here is the engineer who sabotaged the missiles!
IRL MANPADS (which are probably the cheapest and shortest ranged surface to air missiles you can get your hands on) still managed to reach 4.5km in 1962. 1962. Let that sink in. Helldivers 2 is set in the mid 2080s. A missile from nearly 120 years ago is outdoing Super Earth's SAM sites.
One time I was doing one of the geologic survey missions and got a SAM site that was within range of the main objective. So all six dropships that got called got taken down and I only had to deal with a tank that managed to survive everything and a patrol that happened to wander past. Made the mission an absolute breeze.
So…..there’s something very off putting about the SAM site having a short range
Whereas the damn artillery can hit anywhere on the map provided you call it in
You may have all of my what’s?!
Well artilery comes from your ship in space doesnt it?
@@Slightlycamouflaged He means the SEAF artillery, the one you have to load yourself
@@adamstojewski558 you are correct, I am referring to the SEAF artillery
But artillery has limited uses and requires manual activation unlike the SAM site, so it's not completely unbalanced regardless. (not mentioning the available ordinance because you might get a mini-nuke, or you might just get a crapload of smokes, so it's literally a mixed bag)
@@sinteleon_me with my pile of static fields_ : I want them to blow sh!t up, not fizzle
XP gain is literally the only benefit for liberating a SAM site. Ineffective during mission is an understatement
Yeah it’s easy to spot, doesn’t have a ton of enemies (sometimes it only has 1 lil guy you can easily take out), and very decently speedy to do
It helps and occasionally comes in clutch
I've had multiple missions where the SAM site halved the amount of bots during a drop because they killed all the bots before the drop ship dropped them off. If you find 2 during a mission, that's amazing. I've had missions where bot drops were a non-factor because 2 SAM sites just killed every single drop ship before it landed
SAM sites shoot gunships. That is all.
My grandma's shotgun, 🤣🤣🤣
She tries her best
@@getfakt you’re honestly insulting that shotgun a wet paper bag has better range than this surface-to-air mistake
bro thought he was slick with that dummy thic mech

It's crazy how the destroyers have got the technological capacity to send bombardments into accurate locations in mere seconds while orbiting onto the stratosphere of the planets and yet these SAM turrets cannot fire rockets to prevent a dropship that is 100 metres close to it fast enough
Best in-lore explanation would be that these are issued to the same people that get break action shotgun as a support weapon.
I honestly didn’t know it was a SAM site, every time my friend and I would do a mission our comms would be “go hit the microwave bonus objective while I take out this nest” 😅
Uhm. Alexi... the objectives always say it's a SAM site after you activate it
@@dj11o9er I don’t read what the objectives say. That time is better allocated to spreading democracy
@@alexi.8980 You can take your required 2.3 seconds of scenery appreciation to read the objectives
@@dj11o9erWe are not allowed to read in case there is anti democracy propaganda hacked into our huds
Meh I call BS, no nests with SAM sites these are automaton missions only. Bugs don't have ships to SAM
Ngl ive been playing since like week 3 after release, and the SAM site has only been useful ONCE for lol, it happened to be near a gunship facility, making it a breeze to destroy since it kept the sky clear for us
Had two leaf frog each other on the map near are extraction no drop ships made it it
The sam is useful if someone is running something that can't down a dropship in one. Like the antimat rifle.
Yours actually shot at the gunships?
I had a game a week or so ago where they were next to each other and the SAM didn't do a damn thing while the gunships were effing everything else up
With the EAT, I'M the SAM.
I think these should get a map wide coverage buff. Maybe they could add an anti-air radar where you have to wait for the tower to raise. It would still become less effective the further away the SAM site is but at least it would do more. They would also need to make it a guarantee that when it hits the dropship goes down.
Thanks Sargeant slaughter
Kinda wish the SAMs could cover the whole map. It would be nice to do an objective while the SAMs watched the skies for drop ships.
but if it spawns next to the gunship facility its a real blessing
Aight the delivery made this a lot more entertaining than I expected, good on ya
You’ll never change my mind it’s always gonna be a microwave to me. Freedom requires delicious hot pockets
It should get a green circle on the map to indicate it's range, one shot drop ships, and have limited ammo.
It should be a temporary safe haven from reinforcements. As is it's just an xp and req bonus on completion.
If Dropships are close it works good or against gunships
God, no wonder I rarely feel the effects of this site when it only has such limited range. This SAM site needs buffed, especially when it can down your Eagle WAY faster
We call it the marshmallow launcher, this thing hit more rocks then anything
This would be amazing exclusively if it spawned right next to a gunship facility
They do fuck all to gunships. Missiles explode like 50 meters before hitting, so I think the gunships have countermeasures
@@WhermstDidIAsk I've seen it shoot them down multiple times. Not sure what happened in your case, but they work for me (albeit slowly).
The first time I did a sam objective . . . The thing was surrounded by cliffs, took down absolutely 0 drop ships
I feel like the SEAF combat engineers were a bit drunk that day
new news they make it so you can't download hell divers2 in the countries where you can't use a play station account
It's sad when you get a mission with a handful of these bad boys... but like they are all clustered together on the other side of the map.
I did not know how they worked so this s was very helpful. Thank you for the tip sir!
You're welcome 🫡
I’ve had SEAF SAM be genuinely useful all of once, when it spawned next to a gunship facility, so it spawn camped all the gunships for us
gunships now can spawn as a patrol unit. Sam sites are REALLY good against those.
Devs balance is pissing in the wind.
So. In 2024, we have the PATRIOT system with PAC-3 MSE. It has a range of 120km, can engage 4 targets at once, and the missiles travel at mach 5 declassified.
In Helldivers 2, set in 2084, our best SAM system has about a 500 meter range, can only engage one target at a time, and the missiles travel slightly faster than sprinting speed.
Bro sounds like Mr. Torgue's less crazy, but still loud cousin. Keep up the good work. Managed Democracy won't spread itself and videos like these help make Helldivers even more effective in the field.
Yeh, just recently went through a bot mission. Had one of these bad boys in the sub objective, a horde was on its way and called a drop ship. It was activated before the drop came, and it just looked at it at point blank range.
Very very unreliable. It’s laughable compared to the SAEF artillery site.
I have to agree with everyone. Went there is SAM site mission on the first times. We always think it was Microwave do to the silly icons 😂
The end bro... Very wild, AND I LOVE IT 🗣️🔥🔥
The sam looking at me with all, but one of its missiles as five gunships and 14 drop ships: I think I’m gonna wait this one out
Samantha is the best at spread that sweet sweet Democracy infused missiles powered by Libertea!!!
During the final battles of the creek these were absolutely vital to hell diver missions. There were times where I could see up to six drop ships from just one objective from the CLANKERS doing their best efforts for the futile attempt to keep our beloved creek.
There were times I would get upwards of 30-50 kills from a few well places sam sites. Without it I doubt my team would of extracted.
It's the only toaster I'm glad I'm to see
To be fair up untill now it allways felt like it has a good range, while it doesnt oneshot ships it does damage and destroy the bots the ship is carrying
“Only a couple hundred meters” sir that is HALF most of the maps. I’ll take 10
This man could do the best, “ROCK AND STONE” ever
I love the cartoonish way the drop ships break up and fall out of the sky
Finally to know am not the only one who thought it was an microwave
I've been calling it the Liberty Burrito Machine, because that's the only thing it can cook
Sam sites were indirectly buffed from the addition of ambient gunship patrols. They basically create a no-gunship zone around them.
Man I've never thought that Mr.Torgue joins the Helldivers. Hell yeah
Democracy officer this one right here!!
A downed dropship empty or not is one less clanker bot to worry about helldiver!
They should change SAMs so they have unlimited range, limited missiles/uses and it gives you a strategem like the SEAF. You enable the SAM site which brings it online, then when you throw the stratgem that activates the SAM site, which will fire a salvo of missiles (at a realistic speed not these lethargic waddling missiles we have now) at any drop ships that enter the radius of the SAM stratagem for like 20-30 seconds.
thanks to this guy's voice I just discovered the button that tells youtube to never show me a channel again!
Jim Adler the Texas Hammer! He'll fight for you!
Staff sergeant getfakt should report to the ministry for more information to be given to the divers. Haven't felt this well informed since I last heard General Brasch.
Damn that one second frame of the mech at the end there, I didn't know they buffed the mechs but anything for liberty.
One of the slowest missiles I have ever laid eyes upon. Thing moves like an ICMB fresh out of the tube at 1% the mass (likely way less).
“Sweet lady liberty” is honestly crazy
Bro got the sergeant-instructor type ahh voice 💀
You're very generous calling that a square. Ugly square doesn't even begin
This guy sounds like he gargles sandpaper.
Why is Angry Jack telling me there is a surface to air missile somewhere on this automaton planet?
It genuinely surprises me how much the developers don’t play test their shit and just assume, “yeah it looks underwhelming launch it”
Ah yes, my favourite ineffective pea shooter SAM sites. I have legit seen these things mag dump into dropships for five or more shots without doing any visible damage. The transports literally don't stay in play long enough to get shot down. Probably pretty alright against the gunships, though I haven't encountered any within SAM range as of yet so I can't say for sure.
With that last clip I now realize
YOU CAN SPLIT THE DROPSHIPS IN HALF
I’m glad you made this for the bug players, they haven’t ever seen a Sam site in game before
The microwave part is sooo relatable
They also target gunships, so partially useful there since it almost always one shots
Technically, anti-drone microwave guns are a thing to defend nuclear power plants technically, we actually get a bad microwave to fry electronics robots
Very useful against gunships too
I thought I could cook the enemy with the mic
With how simple a activation is. I'm surprised automoton didn't used it against hell diver
Oh yeah I knew they work. They actually work pretty well most of the time. The first shot almost always hit dead center killing most of the bots, then second missile literally rips the ships in half.
So a smol helldiver with their cute little AT can effortlessly shoot down a dropship but a massive girthy SAM can barely take one down? I guess size doesn't matter after all. I feel so validated.
The SAM sites in HD2 got a bit better recently.
There might have been a stealth change for em.
I’ve witnessed this slam into the same dropship three times, and it just rode off into the sunset.
I think a lot of the Bot HP needs a major rework or the weapons need a bigger punch.
sadly ive watched as a sam launcher was activated and bot ships begin arriving, it slowly traverses over and takes a pot shot at the dropship, which doesnt destroy it, then takes a second shot as its leaving after the dropship has successfully made a drop. its pretty useless. i prefer the spear, or if you want more shots for your buck, use the recoil less rifle and backpack. reloading is slow so smash that button as soon as you fire. ive destroyed four bot ships in a row using this weapon. the spear is similar in reload time, but it also has to lock on. youll likely miss the second ship.
Had a SAM covering us on a dual gunship tower/ stratagem jammer cluster, could've brought a tear to General braschs' eye watching it work 🫡
I think a way to buff it would be increase the range, and velocity of the missile, make it one shot but keep its fire rate, so you’ll still be able to shoot down one or maybe two dropships, but you’ll still get dropped on.
Ive seen these things peel dropships out of the air a lot further than ‘grandmas shotgun range’
His grandma's shot gun has amazing range
The SAM never and I mean NEVER runs out of ammo.
Thank you, General Septum.
He points something out everyone has known for months
The speed of the missle should be more than double, as real world Anti Air missiles are insanely fast
When people say they’re going to help you out: 💀
So in the far future, where Super Earth exists.. the SAM sites have a range where it is practically useless to defend itself
The fact that your grandmother's shotgun has a range of a few hundred meters is worrisome.
marcus fenix gone mad
We call it microwave no matter what you or anyone says. It's relatively useless on higher difficulties so we usualy dont bother with it except if its on the way to the extraction and we aren't in a dropship deathspiral already.
Holy shit that missle pulled so much G's
that direct true, I freakin love it :D and those slaps
Found two of them in one mission. They cleared the whole map together. That was insane
They really need to let it shoot multiple missiles and have it be able to track dropships the instant they spawn from far away
ty I did not know this, was too busy roasting Bugs, but roger, will do Sarge!
One mission I did there was a SAM site next to 2 gunship factories and as I finished setting up the SAM, 2 ships spawned and the SAM shot em both down with 1 shot, it was very democratic
SAMs have been buffed. They now have full map coverage
These should be map wide and have a higher chance of spawning if there is a gunship factory on the map
Im sad the guy that sounds like Torque doesnt wanna praise how the sam spreads the awesome power of rad EXPLOSIONS!
Mr. Torgue, is that you? 💪
