  • I setup, tune, and create a few patches for the first time with the Behringer Wasp Deluxe. This is a dual oscillator analog synth with multi-mode VCF and 16 voice poly chain. You can even set it up on your Eurorack.
    Buy the Wasp (non-affiliate links):
    ▶ US: www.sweetwater...
    ▶ EU: www.thomannmus...
    I bought this not only because it was cheap ($200 on Sweetwater's Black Friday deal) but also because it had some sweet analog fatness to it. I also wanted to see how well it incorporated with the rest of my setup since I run everything through Ableton Live and all my controllers are MIDI. Turns out it integrates pretty seamlessly!

    and you didn't even get to the hold switch! Wasp was a fun surprise for me, because i didn't expect it to do much -- but it actually does quite a bit, and it all sounds pretty good.

      I honestly thought when I also got a Pro-1, Neutron, and K-2 that I might get rid of my Wasp but I am too attached to it. I'd probably get rid of the K-2 first 😬
      The next video I have coming out will be a Wasp patch idea video. The hold switch is going to come into play then, for sure!

    I got the Wasp, it's a great synth. Demo videos like this really help to explain and evaluate what it does! It helps with pre-purchase questions and even those who are already owning it and still learning the functions. I am still trying to figure out those bottom right 3 (attack, decay, delay) knobs. They don't seem to do much. I'd love to see a complete demo on that!

      So those are for the Control Envelope which modulate the Filter. They function like the VCA Envelope but instead of changing the volume over time, they open and close change the Filter Frequency based on how attack/decay/delay knobs are set. However there is another element to this section which is the Filter Control knob to the left of that. When the knob is centered it is neutral so it is effectively disabled. However if you turn this knob towards positive or negative it will modulate the filter based on the polarity you choose and the time set by the other 3 knobs. If you can’t hear your attack and decay knobs doing anything it’s because your filter control knob is set to neutral (off).
      To best hear what it does, set your Filter Frequency to center, turn the Filter Control knob in the “Control Envelope” section all the way to +, then turn your attack/decay knobs up and you’ll hear the filter open and then close. Also when doing this, make sure the VCA ENV section has both Attack and Decay knobs set to zero (this just ensures while you’re learning that the change in sound you hear is from the control envelope and not the amp volume changing). Also make sure the Control Knob in the Control Osc section is set to neutral for the same reason (which is the left filter control knob)
      Let me know if this helps!! 😊

      Thanks! I agree that these do sound amazing. Also scooped up Neutron and Pro-1 so will have some videos about those as well as chaining them together.
      I think the haters are a very small, but loud minority. Probably just trying to justify to themselves that their old, large analog gear that costs thousand and requires constant maintenance sounds better than new sturdy, reliable analog gear. Let them hate, when people are listening on Spotify, they aren't going to know the difference. I would challenge any haters of this to find me another dual oscillator analog synth that is this rugged that costs $220.

    Great video, you're encouraging me to buy one, but I have a question: can I use it without a keyboard? In my case, use it with Ableton?

    • @GourlieRecords
      @GourlieRecords  7 месяцев назад

      Yup! That’s the main way I use it. You just need an audio interface or USB accessory to send MIDI out of your computer (via Ableton) to the MIDI input of the Wasp.

    With digital oscillators download analog mean you don’t have to mess around with screwdrivers to calibrate things?

    • @GourlieRecords
      @GourlieRecords  2 года назад

      Not entirely sure your question... but if you're referring to tuning the oscillators you don't have to tune digital oscillators but with analog they fall out of tune over time given the nature of the signal path traveling through analog circuity so they do have to be tuned every now and then. No screwdrivers necessary though, you just grab a tuner and use the master tune knob built on every analog synth. Takes only a few seconds.
      Worth noting this is just referring to master tuning. As far as tuning multiple oscillators with each other (Osc 1 and Osc 2) both digital and analog require you to tune them to each other which gives you immense control over slightly detuning one from the other or tuning one to a root and the other to a 5th or any other possible combos you can think of.
      You shouldn't even need to use screwdrivers unless you're taking your synth apart for maintenance/repair which is really only commonly required on original analog synths from the 70s and 80s which need replacement parts. Any new analog synths will last a long time before a toolbox is ever required.

      @@GourlieRecords I asked cause I have a Behringer Pro 1 (only a year old) and I had to open it up and calibrate them, it’s ok now and both play in tone across the keyboard ok we’ll as of last night has. But the frequency knobs aren’t as acurrate one u move it the extremes for holding the tuning.
      Anyway i was just wonder if I’d ever have to crack ope a wasp and do the same thing

    • @GourlieRecords
      @GourlieRecords  2 года назад

      @@TwinCitiesOxygen Definitely not, these things are solid. I also have a Pro-1, K-2, and Neutron and have no idea why I would ever need to open any of them up. If you hadn't taken it apart you could probably have sent it back to Behringer if there was a problem.
      What did you do to the circuitry when you had it open? All the tuning knobs you need are on the face.
      I'm wondering if the problem was just the way you had it patched, perhaps the Keyboard knob of OSC2 was switched off or you had frequency modulation switched on.
      Glad it's working now at least....

      @@GourlieRecords I just calibrated the oscillators because they were out of tune up and down keyboard and with each other. Also if i dialed them both back to -5 on their respective frequency knobs they were both way off tune. So say they were suppose to be tuned down 7 semitones each one would be flat and the other sharp. I had to put Osc A up to -4 to match B at -5. And even then Osc B was pitchy relative to the scale

      [EDIT: THIS PRICING IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE] Maybe... the Pro-1, Neutron, and CAT are all marked down by $130 right now putting them $20 cheaper than the Wasp. I think they have some new stuff coming out later next year. Either way, I enjoy the Wasp. Picked up the Pro-1 and Neutron in the current sale so I'm excited to compare them all and feed their signals into each other. We'll see what kind of poly sounds we can make! I doubt I'll keep them all though.

      @@GourlieRecords wow i didnt know that! Thats really cheap!! Too bad i already made my black friday shopping hahaha. The mini-desk-eurorack-cheap-synth thing is really a good, i am very interested in the k2 but i feel like the wasp is the "weakest" of them all since It has the least patch points and the modulation and routing options are kinda meh.. i see a lot of youtubers in the last couple of months reviewing this one particular synth, but why not f ex the model d or the k2 which are way more powerful and better bang for buck? Thats my opinion at least maybe im just a weird synth freak and people dont care that much about modulators, control voltages and cables.

      @@andewprod you're totally right. Me personally, I just wanted to get a feel for how hardware integrates with my Ableton MIDI setup. I will say that the VCA hold switch with repeatable envelopes is pretty fun. I'm excited to try this as the first synth in my chain and send it's two oscillators into other synths. Regular price though this is $110 cheaper than the next Behringer Analog synth. So it is a sizable jump. $220 for something with this much analog fatness is a pretty slick deal. It's build quality is also amazing. I've seen videos of the Roland boutique line, those start around $400 and have wobbly, plastic parts
