Disney needs to stop trying to fix what isn't broken.

  • The latest Aladdin trailer is out and it showcases so many nostalgic scenes recreated in live action. But is it all just an attempt to baiting us into buying tickets for movies we've already seen when the company could be putting their resources towards other projects like "Gigantic" which was canceled? Yes, yes it is but with that being said, Disney is making major changes to our girl Princess Jasmine. We've seen this done before with Belle and the two of us aren't fans of it. So we're going to rant about it! Either way, these movies are probably going to keep making a lot of money but we're still holding out for "Gigantic."

In the animated film Jazmine had a lot of depth, she was sweet and caring but also could stand up for herself if the situation called for it. And she wasn't afraid to speak her mind either. The live action one seemed to be just spiteful and even down right mean at times...what Aladdin saw in her is beyond me. She seemed less educated and more....smartassed like how she brought up the maps and said aladdin's kingdom was made up, felt less like she was trying to see if he was lying and more like one of those know it all children trying to act all proud. They made her less of a character and more of mary sue. And that song was. Apower fantasy if I ever saw one, not even fighting just guys turning to dust while she sings how strong she is? Are they saying women can only be strong in their dreams? I am getting mixed messages here....or it was a complete hack job done by a bunch of people who have no idea what was going on in the film originally, I don't know it's a toss up.

The sad thing is that my family likes these remakes saying it was more better than the original, especially when it comes to the Beauty and the Beast remake cause they find Emma Watson more charming, but I'm the opposite of that as I find Emma's Belle more bitchy than anything and what they are doing to Jasmine is stupid, these "changes" are more damage than good.

It also bugs me that so many people will STILL watch these remakes once they come out, thereby giving Disney that sweet money anyway.
I never understood the concept of remakes, because if you love a movie, then WHY would you wanna see it being remade? Same goes to show with all these Stephen King-movie remakes that are coming out too, really. I refuse to watch them or give them any of my time, because the originals are perfectly good and don't need these new mass produced remakes to try to outshine them.
I'm sick and tired of Marvel-movies too, but at least they're original and most of them haven't been filmed before (from what I know). I'd rather Hollywood kept shitting Marvel movies out than see yet another remake of any kind being promoted. That's a huge statement coming from me.

One of the THEMES of the original story was the feeling of being trapped: Aladdin trapped in his own poverty, Jasmine trapped inside the palace, and the genie literally trapped inside the magic lamp.
It was something that united the main protagonists. It united the story. But of course they are going to forsake narrative theme and symbolism for Jasmine to be "strong and independent." *long sigh* She WAS strong and independent. She has a tiger as a familiar, and even escapes the palace in the original.

Its more complex then that. I've heard from Western friends that Jasmine is weak and a push-over. For someone like me, Jasmine is a hero. I recognize that the life she has is "ideal" but its NOT what she WANTS for herself. She knows at some point she'll become Queen and she'll have to navigate her interactions with the public. The fact she was unaware of the harsh punishments on the poor, the palace guards going after Aladdin, and Jafar's control over the guards; she would have never found out what Jafar's motives were. Yet, she is a woman, in a "conservative" community, or the understanding it is. Jasmine has to be strategic in how she addresses her concerns. The fact Jasmine KNOWS how to do this, shows she's a far deeper character then people give her credit for. There are so many RUclips commentators that say she's a bad character or that she lacks depth, etc. These remarks come from people that have dismissed her. I'm thinking, this is the crowd, Disney is listening to. Even when merchandising the Disney Princesses, she is not one they include most of the time, it's Ariel and Belle from this era in Disney film making. Do you notice it, too?

The beauty about these older Disney films is that they were made to cater to people young and old. They are timeless stories that focus on good morals, memorable characters, and a sense of magic that keep us coming back year after year. A magic that makes us want to introduce our kids to it so they can feel the same way we did. These live action remakes, on the other hand, are focused on taking what other people poured their blood, sweat, and tears into, and churning out a more politically correct version for money. Take Dumbo for example: a big reason why that movie succeeded was because of animator Bill Tytla, who was known for drawing villains in Disney like Stromboli and Chernabog. But with Dumbo, he wanted to animate the main character to break away from that, and manage to create something so powerful through the magic of animation that Dumbo, despite having no dialogue, makes you instantly connect with him and stand on his own as a character. The new Dumbo has none of that, because it's just a photo-realistic elephant with big ears that sometimes acts cute. It's not a character. And that is the problem with these remakes: they take actual characters that animators and writers put so much effort into bringing to life and convincing us were real and replace them with imitations.

Samaru onesixthree I love Tim Burton but I will not be watching Dumbo. Another problem I found is that Dumbo was supposed to be a standalone character. A tough journey by himself. He goes through things on his own and along with some support from Timothy mouse. I wanted only Dumbo. But there are too many annoying human protagonists and therefore the original story and message gets lost. It seems people are taking charge and babying Dumbo. And that sucks.

I also need to add: that best friend quote is very sexist and shallowly stereotypical. When I was a little girl, my best friend was a boy and my group of friends consister of mainly boys (just one other girl was there but she was as tomboyish as I was) - it was actually all the other little girls that shamed and isolated me for being different so I give a hearty middle finger at this "girl power solidarity" bullshit. It wasn't until high school when my best friend was a girl and I gained more friends who were girls but even then, the ratio of my friends of boys:girls would be like 6:4. I just socialize better with boys.
I also don't do hugging - I'm not a touchy-feely person and if me or my high school best friend did as the article said, we'd be looking at each other weirdly and go, "Uh...you okay there? You sick or something?" Even then, I considered my dog as my closest friend (bless his soul as he passed away last year) as he was always there for me when things got rough and did help throughout tough times (way to go with making Rajah so insignificant).

Masked Blanks I'm one of those apparently nonexistent ("nonexistent" in the eyes of the movie makers) girls who relates to almost everything you say. I'm a very hyperactive and sportive person. And for that reason a lot of girls didn't enjoy hanging out with me because they saw me as a "tomboy".
I didn't have any "best" guy friends per se, but there were lots of boys that were good to me whom I was at least moderately close with. Actually one of them in particular I would literally stick to like glue. I followed him around a lot and we talked and got into hilarious arguments. We didn't exactly spend every waking moment together, and we never actively sought each other out, but whenever we found ourselves in the same room our interactions were very sweet and memorable. Actually looking back, he really was one of my favorite people, I think the only reason we weren't _best_ friends was because he was already very close with my older brother, so he probably saw me as his best friend's sister. Regardless he was an adorable, kind little boy. We don't talk anymore but I miss him to this day.
In any case, I already hate this character Dalia, not because she exists, but for what she represents. Maybe I'm discrediting a lot of effort the writers could be putting in here, but to me it sounds like her character will only be boiled down to "stereotypical best friend that the 'strong independent woman' main character is obligated to have because God forbid a girl having guy friends for any reason at all". There's literally no other reason for this character to exist. And to the creators I would ask: _what_ is so wrong with having friends of the opposite gender? What is the point of Dalia? Because I honestly don't think there _is_ any point to Dalia.

Even as a feminist i am starting to despise this whole idea that they have to completely rework a classic female character and throw in another female character for her to be friends with. Its not that those close girl relationships should not exist, but when an integral part to a character is the fact that they are so lonely and so desperate to escape their oppressive environment, that it INCITES their leaving in the first place, thereby kicking off the bulk of the story, and you change that so they do have a friend, they are not as lonely, where does that desperation go? I feel like they are ruining Jasmines arc here in the name of being "more empowered" and while i am all for empowerment of female characters, they are really hamfisting and cheapening it, and saying that there was something wrong with a character who had absolutely nothing wrong with her in the first place...and in fact was one of the most independent princesses of the bunch, especially when you count all movies and the show. The first one if that new idea about wanting to be Sultan. Jasmine loved her dad more than anything, wanting to be the new sultan means she is thinking about her father´s death. Is totally agains Jasmine character, firstly because she is the kind of person who would want her dad to live forever, and secondly because Jasmine is aware of her own ignorance of the world, and would like to know and learn more before crowning herself.
The second thing I dislike is her friendship with Dalia. As the video says, Jasmine solitude is part of her character arc. My biggest issue with female characters these days is the notion that a female character cannot be strong, feminist, a good role model, etc unless she's a super smart, snarky, condescending kung-fu action girl that loudly declares how much she does NOT need/want the love of a man!
As if women (both in real life and fiction) who desire love, marriage, and a Happily Ever After are failures and bad role models for little girls.
Jasmine's character in the original movie made sense. She was a sheltered sixteen year old princess who felt stifled by her obligation to marry some random prince. So her goals were simply to get out and see the world outside her castle and to marry for love. Her character wont magically become more endearing, feminist, or fleshed out just because the new movie adds a sub-plot where she fights Jafar with a sword or demands the right to dictate Agrabah tax policy or whatever.
I had the same issue with the Ducktales reboot. Everyone went on and on about how the new Webby and Mrs Beakley were awesome because they could do karate and parkour and the old versions were shit because.....they behaved like a realistic little girl and old woman respectively. It just....REALLY rubbed me the wrong way. IMO, the new Webby and Mrs Beakley are kind of annoying because they go too far in the other direction (ie while the old versions were mostly weak and passive, the new ones spend almost all their screen time showing off how much more capable & badass they are than ALL the men around them)
And don't get me wrong, I don't think there's anything inherently bad about badass kung-fu action girls. I get that they came about because people were rightfully tired of female/princess characters who spent most of their movies' run-time just sitting around waiting for a man to save them and make their lives complete. But this new fad goes too far in the other direction. Instead of offering more diversity in what a female character can be; it just forces ALL modern characters to go into the "Feminist Action Girl That Needs No Man" box instead of the "Hapless Damsel In Distress" box.

Admittedly, I was at first curious with seeing the Disney live-action remakes because I wanted to see what the films in my childhood were like in full-blown live-action. I was even excited. It wasn't until the live remake of Beauty and the Beast my opinion soured. It's not the premise of "animated to live action" that soured me because it's very possible to do those and even tweak it to make things more plausible or just work (e.g. Alita, Phoenix Wright, Rodger & Hammerstein's Cinderella). What soured me is the fact that Disney is trying so hard to cater to real-life politics and modern agendas which were never there in the original and most certainly NEVER made the magic.
When time goes by and the world realizes that such ideals and perspectives are not only destructive but obsolete and useless, these live-action remakes will NOT age well. There is no true magic in these live-action films. No child cares about identity politics or agendas. Children want action. They want fantasy. They want magic. A good number of adults also want that magic, too, because this real world can be too tiring at times and we want that escape AWAY from this crap.
I could seriously write an essay against the bashing of the Disney princesses and how they are most certainly NOT just "boy-crazy damsels in distress" but I'd be here all day. I swear, God forbid a woman not want a position in power and is content in just being behind-the-scenes, doing what she does, a secretary, or playing second fiddle. And God forbid a woman who WANTS to find a husband and get married. And God forbid a woman being feminine, girly, and lady-like or dressed quite well or is confident in showing some skin. Oh, the horror!

Interestingly enough some of the Disney princesses were actually more feminst and empowered than whatever the company is trying to do now. Just take a look at Belle, Jasmin, Ariel, even certain Cinderella's traits (inner strenght in an abusive household). The difference is that the statement was more subtle and natural.
Now look at the modern "feminist" movies and it seems that writers can't make a statement without putting the protagonist in an over the top "patriarchized" scenario. Is so stupid it hurts and sadly this is going to be the first contact of many children with the movement.

    • @maskedblanks7774
      @maskedblanks7774 5 лет назад +17

@@rosaradioactiva8974 Definitely! All those princesses had personalities beyond "empowered" and you can easily describe them with personality traits. They were all their own characters - the feminist and empowerment messages were definitely subtle and natural.
I find it so sad but at the same time, I'm hopeful. Disney isn't the only thing out there to expose kids to - one of my good friends has two kids, a son and a daughter, and she introduces them to Ghibli after I introduced her to it. Her children adore Ghibli and my friend loves it, too. So while Disney is going under with this uncreative slew, at least we can expose children to other forms of media that are worthy of praise and have actually great messages and role model characters.

Disney was "feminist" before it was cool just showing leading females characters going on an adventure "Alice in Wonderland" or simply having their own animated movie was a win back then even if the was the "usual" let's get a man story but Disney evolved after The Little Mermaid the princesses started going out on their own and having their own adventures instead of waiting to be rescued this was a HUGE change if you read fairytales where 9 time out of 10 the female is kinda useless and is just there to be saved and get married. Even though these stories ended with the princess getting her man the fact that SHE got outthere on her own is what made me love the 90's princesses so much. We don't need a change if SOME lonely feninazi's want a "strong" empowered female lead why not get Hollywood to pick up some of the kick ass comics and books that have these characters instead of trying to change classics that already have strong kicks ass females.

I personally don't think Will Smith as the genie is bad.
Robin Williams did an amazing job and created an iconic character, but his comedic style relied heavily on pop culture references that children today might not understand. Smith on the other hand uses farce comedy which doesn't really get outdated as easily, you just have to find his over-exaggerations funny. I really do want to see what he does with the role, but I feel like even he won't really make this film that enjoyable.
The best friend character for Jasmine however sounds absolutely awful. Disney wants to pander to little girls and their best friends, but what about girls who don't have a best friend? They're the ones that really need to see that they matter, that even princesses can be lonely and have trouble socializing, and if they're brave and try to get out there like OG Jasmine, they'll find someone. And that's not even mentioning that since Dahlia is the handmaiden, she's basically a friend that was handed to Jasmine and probably didn't have the option to NOT want to be her friend. Real-life friendships aren't like that.

So it's fine if a male character's only aim is to get the girl, but female characters are considered weak and shallow if they don't have other purposes in life? The problem is the culture of generally looking down upon feminine energy and positivity. “Feminine” strengths like loving kindness, optimism, and gracefulness are regarded as weaknesses and undermined in favor of mean spirit, sass and physical force (aka physical and verbal violence). Disney princesses, at least the iconic, beloved ones, are not weak helpless damsels in distress that do nothing until they are saved. They are already strong female characters that refuse to lose will and hope despite unfavorable circumstances. And because they did their best with whatever was given to them, they are rewarded by the universe. That is very reflective of how it works in real life. Not everyone has the means and power to be “an independent character” who “fights” and “saves herself.” Sometimes you do need a breakthrough, a change in circumstances to help you. Sometimes the only thing you can do is just do your best in everything at the best of your abilities, don’t let the negative people around you take your spirit down, and treat others (esp those more vulnerable than you) with love, even if you were not extended the same courtesy. Then and only then, when one day the opportunity comes, you will be able to grab it and thrive.

James Haack Pocahontas has awesome animation, beautiful music, good voice acting...everything but a nuanced and respectful script.
They set out to explain why the English were wrong to exploit the land. They did this with a preachy environmentalist song - "Colors of the Wind" has a beautiful melody but the lyrics are a woke white liberal's idea of what Native American beliefs sound like.
Disney flubbed the Powhatans' portrayal too. For instance, they really did believe that the spirits of their loved ones stayed near their villages, inside the trees, to watch over them. But they didn't literally believe that those trees had faces and could talk to them. Grandmother Willow is basically an Entwife.
Also, the love story is rushed and the comic relief - Radcliffe and the animals' antics - doesn't go with the rest of the movie.
If you want to see a serious historical story done _really well_ as an animated musical, check out DreamWorks' _The Prince of Egypt_ .It is a wonderful retelling of the Biblical story of Moses with heart, depth, well-written and well-acted characters, stunning animation and epic music.

I really don't understand why Disney feels the need to make some of their more recent princesses and heroines more "feminist," because many of them are already. If you compare Disney female leads from before the Second Wave feminist movement to those after, it's clear they were already trying to make them more "empowered." Ariel was a rebellious teenager who fell in love with a human despite her father's disapproval. Belle was a bookworm and an intellectual who didn't set out to find love but found it anyway. Gaston even chastises her (as you showed) for being more interested in books than in men while saying it's dangerous for women to read. This proves that Emma Watson never understood Belle as a character in the first place. Although the law required Jasmine to marry a prince within a certain time frame, she refused every one of her suitors and instead falls in love with the "street rat" Aladdin. And like with Ariel, Jasmine's failure to fit the norms of her surrounding culture cause tensions with her father. Modern feminism has changed Disney heroines much more than they seem to admit, which is why it makes no sense to rewrite them.

Ariel was a fantastic example of an empowered Princess. She gave up her voice for the one thing she wanted. Of course no girl is ever allowed to want love (from a man) anymore

To be honest jasmine was fine just the way she is there is no need to change her let alone be progressive and seriously belle was already a smart woman who read books and had common sense with a big heart and i could relate to belle when i was a 90's kid

True, true. I saw Mulan and Mulan II months ago. And, I really do not like the second movie. The first one is okay, but it needs more work on the writing and the villain's motivation. Pocahontas I is just beautifully-animated. But, not a very-well written movie, in my opinion. Pocahontas II is much better-written in its' second act. But it needs better work on its' third act. Now, I just saw the original 1992 Aladdin movie, and it's still awesome. But, I am not even gonna bother watching the 2019 remake.

Their Laboratory mice So is Larry. Their genes have been spliced along with Larry. Their Pinky and the Brain and Larry Brian and Larry Brian and Larry. Before each night is done Larry wake up. Their plain will be unvaild all 3 of them. By the dawning of the sun Larry likes the sun. Larry likes the sun. To take over the world Larry will help.

Honestly, ever since Disney decided to make money, for the sake of making money, I gave up on them. The company went from being something magical to something mundane and predictable. They have a whole bunch of men writing characters for young girls, that they take on the advice of the female actors who are in many ways, young girls themselves, and don’t see the complexities of what the original female characters had. Their strengths, cunning, desire, and yes even the need to be loved. There is nothing wrong with wanting a love interests. The thing is, if you look back on the first princesses, they longed for love due to their loneliness and solitude, but when their adventures started, the princes were simply there along the way, not the main concern. Disney has become a sound bite, and I’m truly saddened that to have watched it grow from something unique and wonderful, into something boring and incredibly patronising.

Great point about how in their efforts to empower women they ignored the agency present in the original character.
You see this problem with strong female characters. Supposedly enlightened folk look at them and all they can see is a stereotype, even when that stereotype isn't there. They simply assume it is - sort of "overlaying" the stereotype because that's what fits their narrative. You saw it a lot with Black Widow - while she was kicking ass and taking names, all critics could talk about was her tight-fitting uniform.

    • @maryammuhib
      @maryammuhib 5 лет назад +3

Ikr. These days people care so much about the underlying "message" behind a movie's characters, rather than caring about the actual story.
The problem with this is that the story should be the _backbone_ for symbolism and messages and themes. To rely on the most surface-level stereotypical "empowering" bullcrap to appease to a wider audience, without considering what you're doing to a movie's story, is just plain ignorant and awful.
Also I wholeheartedly agree with your example of Black Widow. And to add on to everything you said, why is Black Widow's outfit such a problem if literally EVERY OTHER HERO in the MCU wears skintight clothing, including the men?
And on top of that, BW is a spy and a fighter. Do people not understand how impractical it is to wear lose, baggy clothes in the middle of a fight? You'd be slowed down by drag, and even trip over your own fabric if you wear too much.

"It's like they didn't even see the movie."
That's because they didn't. They haven't seen any of these movies through except for snippets and scenes for whichever writer is working on said scene (and I'm sure they're are multiple writers). Honestly all these remakes can be skipped and you can just watch the originals.

Jasmine has always been my favorite princess, Aladdin and Jasmine have always been my favorite Disney couple. I am so scared for this movie but so excited for it. I love Beauty and the Beast ( and I have several "issues" with the live action abomination) and I went in to that movie wanting to love it. If they change Jasmine character like this...I'm going to cry!

“Jasmine gets another friend” How annoying! I absolutely hate what’s going on here. Disney just looks back at a already polished painting and sees a “ mistake” their audience doesn’t see and tries to fix the “mistake” thinking they ought to make it better but nope, made it worse.

I believe they are remaking them to appease the feminist overlords that complained about the Princess' body types, and their so-called "reliance on men" BS that they are making these as a form of damage control, because body image is more important than story.

Lesson here is don't let an actress who hasn't acted in more then five major films (and no I'm not counting hp as 8 films coz thats just one character she plays) dictate how a major character like bell should be portrayed because she doesn't know anything about the genius writing behind it.
