Fantastic little spot that, you wouldn't think you were in a city.
It's a noisy city with beautiful walks and the kids love it. Especially in the spring and summer when the Signets hatch.
parts of this was used by the Army Ordnance Corp right up till the 1980's, my mum was stationed there during WW2. The canal you keep talking about is know as Swanmore lake. just past the lake there are a number of cut outs in the trees where pre D Day vehicles we're stored out of sight, and yes lived here for over 60 years so know the area well :)
Such a great location to see and thanks for sharing your great adventures. Greetings from WW2HistoryHunter
The west demi-bastion and playing fields belong to Portsmouth Grammar School. At least they did 55 years ago.
The gun ports had been blocked up and the cannon and theit slides removed. Apart from tnat, it seemed original. The semicircular tracks on which the guns were traversed were still in place as well as massive iron rings for the training tackles.
Good one guys.
thanks guys for great video. i used to live in stamshaw not far from hilsea. used to go down there when we were kids. oh the memories 😊
Just like to wish you a very Merry Christmas and a happy New Year Ian Chris and number one fan look forward to seeing you next year 2020
I wish i had joystick mode so I could steer Ian and the camera about . What an amazing place 👍
Late 70's and Early 80's, I used to go with my father to a gun club that operated out of the Lines, .22 and Air Rifle shooting.
Anyone else here because of Hell on earth? Awesome exploration guys both channels ❤️❤️
In fact I would go as far as calling these guys the 'posh version' of Hell on earth! 👍😆😁 Xx
The shape of the entrance in that little magazine is known as an 'Ogival Arch'. Used on buildings for a long time, but very much liked by Victorians, on their 'Gothic Revival' era buildings. It's an oddly sinister shape. 24:00 - you should carry a small tin of WD-40 or 3 In 1 oil - give these magnificent old doors a hand!
38:20 - anyone else hear the odd noise on the soundtrack? There are also other voices audible when Chris looks at the traverse rail of the first gun position in there.
That being said, great video, gents. Nice one.
I kept hearing a chick voice in the back ground glad u no what u talking I always look for your message on these vids cuz I no u look it up and tell what's what ty for Knowing so much on this stuff u help me out all the time
@@tomtinkersrezlife278 - Glad that I've been of help. I've always been interested in history, architecture, and military archaeology. I'm 56, and used, in the 1980's and 1990's to explore places like this. Sadly, my knees let me down, and climbing about is not an option anymore. So I watch IKS (other exploring channels are available).
Thanks again.
This was good day loved doing this explore with you guys
Jesus Folks, another great video by the Legendary IKS!
...as extensively used in the film Tommy!!
My old colleague (Dave Shotton) was Pete Shotton's younger brother. Pete Shotton was John Lennon's best mate from the age of 5 until John was killed. When Apple Records was wound up John and George (Harrison) asked Pete what he wanted to do (he was effectively 'Head Chap' of Apple at Abbey Road). Pete said he'd always wanted to run a shop and Post Office (I guess it was the drugs :D). John and George bought Pete the Hillsea Convenience Stores and Post Office, (I think it may have been a 'Fine Fare'... or maybe a CoOp at the time).
Anyway... Move on to 2016(ish)... I'd worked with Dave for many years before we both retired. My best friend knew Dave and kept in touch despite never meeting him. One day she was on the phone to him saying that she and I were going to the Lake District to recreate the opening scenes from the film Tommy... Then Dave said his claim to fame was he was in the film Tommy... We said it was on the DVD at the time and asked him to say 'where'!! He pointed himself out in all the scenes filmed in Hillsea!! We were sooooo impressed, (I got to know him in his mid Forties... but it was soooo easy to recognise him as a young man!! Anyway... He then went on to say how he'd played the tambourine in Hey Jude as a teenager as he happened to be in the Apple studios that day and how, as a young teen/man he often hung out with the Beatles!!!!!! I'd worked with Dave for many years and he never mentioned any of this. Dave was a really nice, not remotely boastful, bloke :)
After some coaxing he said how he'd bunked off school and been in the Apple studios (courtesy of his brother, Lennon's best mate) for several years... he met every star and band of the late 60s/early 70s... and how he'd lost his virginity to a Grade A celebrity twice his age!!!!
Anyway... He told us all the exact locations/scenes where Hillsea was used in the film Tommy and (after Dave died that year, with a vino in his hand in his favourite chair), we went and visited each location.. Dave was a legend because I worked with him for many years and he was a top bloke and never once mentioned any of this!! The weekend after Dave died my friend, and only months after finding all this out,we went into a charity shop in Maidstone and saw a book titled "John Lennon and My Life" (or something similar)... As we thumbed through the pages we saw a photo of the convenience store in Hillsea!!!
Anyaway.... I think the archway on the thumbnail might be the one that Keith Moon approached whilst riding the large organ (though I am quite p*ssed and I haven't actually watched the video yet).
Anyway... Hillsea, (fort and Lido), were locations used in the film 'Tommy' and I used to know someone that was an extra in it... and that's all I basically wanted to say!! :D
No they never used the lines.
The fort on the hill which was Tommy's Holiday Camp, Hilsea Lido pool, John Pounds Ship yard (The Giant Pinballs were actually deactivated WWII Buoy's)
Sally Simpson's was Wesley Hall in Fratton Road, Pinball Wizard was filmed in Kings Theatre, and of course who can forget the fire of South Parade Pier at the end of the movie.

Oh... and my old work colleague Dave is the one playing the tambourine on the released version of Hey Jude!!!!! I mentioned this to my best friend, she who kept in touch with him, after he retired, despite never meeting him. She reminded me of so many more things about Dave... His son was obsessed with maths and was an advisor on a top Hollywood film. We, my friend and I, went to Hillsea a couple of years back in homage to Dave. He really was a very rare, genuinely, nice guy. She wanted to sit in the pub he went to, walk on the shore where he walked his dog, and 'stalk' where his sort of ex-wife lived! Happy times... and I worked with him for years and he never mentioned he'd pretty much met every name from the 60s/70s you could mention. He even spent time with Baba Ram Dass who died a few days ago...
Another great video...my inlaws live in Hilsea and will be there for Christmas. Casemates Music Studios is in one of those places too.
Another great explore guys really enjoyed this video 🇬🇧🇬🇧🛸🛸
fantastic video..Throughly enjoyed it..
Fantastic explore guys. Merry Christmas
WOW that Gun Brick work was cool looking
amazing video!
Did some work for Portsmouth Grammar school who have a site along there. They used the rooms for change/shower rooms for the sports fields. Nice work guys been a long time since I've been there.
love watching your films thumbs up
Nice video, on the sign )18±49 i see the word casemate and that is quit remarkable because the dutch word for the same building is kazemat. and we always say kazemat is a dutch bunker and a bunker is made bij the Germans in WOII. And the kazematten are quit older than those German bunkers 1850 i think.
Really enjoyed that one! Glad you got into a few of the gun positions. You guys should invest in steel toed safety boots. Some of that rubbish you’re walking on looks nasty.
Thanks' IKS your the best
A great video folks
Great video IKS. Very interesting place there :)
used to play there in the early nineties, had no idea of the history..thanks
Thank you really really interesting
Great a new video :)
Good video, you should have a look at the round tower on the mouth of Portsmouth’s port and maybe Southsea castle if your still around that way
Very reminiscent of that explore you did of the reservoir then found those buildings amongst the foliage, was it fort Amherst?
Big fan of yours for a long time look what you inspired me to do my first video world war II air raid shelter on a housing estate. P.s. look out for you catch phrase lol
Thanks 👍
Bastion 4 had a small shooting range in it for .22 rifles. I used to go there as a kid 25 years ago. There was also another range for pistols which at the time the police would sometimes use. The rifle range went over 100yds.
Yeah I shot .22 in there many times, my father was secretary of a gun club there back in the late 70's.
I try to find where you guys are along with Hell on Earth and Sub Exploration. Were you guys by Portsbridge Creek and the first place you explored Smile Service and Repairs? Were you looking at the Bastions along that trail?
At 26:41 there is a recording studio there. Recently a coffee shop has opened up in the corner
My home town, that’s where we walk our dog daily. 🤘👌🤘
Yep lol
Up the saints!
Has any of these ww2 bunkers seen any action
Have you guys ever made a video about the changing of the guards at the palace
What is the best month to visit dover .
at the 30 minute mark, that place was a lot easier for you to get into than it was for me and Subexploration when we went lol
And the WW2 pillbox has the walls at the firing port height and centre wall to prevent bullets from coming in one port and hitting people at other firing ports.
Only a year ago the big bunkers were not fenced off. You didn't go down the wooden stairs to another set of tunnels. Also come out at anchorage park past the gate and turn right for more tunnels that are open. I read online the mod buried a load of nuclear waste down that way. It's listed as a site. Well documented but you should return with a metal detector to see what you can find. I run the forest daily so know it all too well.
I would love to see how they built these places.
I've found hidden fortification that is hard to get to
There’s a machine gun post on the top as well think that’s what it was go down and check out fort fareham as well think you will like it
5:55 at the back there is a door I broke through and there is a rail way
Jesus no1 fan gets about,, theirs no holding him back, top vid lads👍
Huge hospital near by, that’s what the sirens are
so much for the old saying "build it and they will come"
Did you add helicopter sounds to your drone footage?😂
🤩
Wish people would use the graffiti it ruins everything. That was so interesting. Thanks for taking me along
How many number one fans have you got???? Surely there is only one number one fan the rest are just superfans lol very confusing. Great vid as always
A map to show location would be a good addition.
John
Google it.
It runs from where the old The News offices used to be, and the old south downs bus depot, all the way along the north of Portsea Island, until the moat enters Langstone Harbour.

Many of raves back in the day there 😂 good times
Hey folks! 😊
41:46 the fort gives birth to Chris hehehe
11:09 looks like a WW2 gun position.
just moved right next to Hilsea lines, lovely place to explore, just a shame its all covered in graffiti now. the area you are showing at 11:20 is just a mess now.
Camera flash sound lol
Bastion 4 is rented out as music practice rooms.
Casemates, indeed
I'm there now and I have no idea how to get in😭

Hey guys born and bred southsea girl , not Pompey girl ..lolol shame as I remember when I was young the wooden doors and the tunnels were open and not full of rubbish and and dumped shit!!! I remember running through them and my dad telling me all about them . My grandfather was stationed here in ww11 and love the history if Portsmouth although its a shame people have abused it
safety hat lol
I am 68 and when I was a kid these sort of places would have been packed with other kids playing war games now they are all abanded because all the kids are in their bedrooms playing xbox
Using a real helicopter now for your aerial shots you must be earnng ££££ from youtube!
