An anthem for those of us that grew up in the late '70s
Jackson Browne started his career writing songs for other artists such as the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (he was briefly a member in 1966) & the Eagles (Browne co-wrote "Take It Easy"). But in the 70's he started recording his own songs. He had a lot of hits 70's-80's such as "Doctor, My Eyes", "Rock Me On The Water", "Here Come Those Tears Again", "The Pretender", "Running On Empty", "Somebody's Baby", "Tender Is The Night" etc.
My mom had some Nitty Gritty Dirt Band albums, I loved them! This was in the mid 60s…

I disagree, Jackson wrote the tunes for himself but allowed others to record them (for the writers' royalties) before he had his own recording contract.
Browne was also a producer of Warren Zevon's "Excitable Boy" album, a rock classic, and credited with cowriting (with Zevon) "Tenderness on the Block."
Whenever I hear this incredible gem, I'm 14 years old again.....and I can still sing every last word....!!

Jackson Browne is the "every man" singer songwriter. A true artist of his trade.
It wasn’t directed to city workers. It was directed to his road crews that setup and break down his concert performance sets and travel from town to town with him on tour.
This song is reminiscent of Bob Seger’s Turn the Page.

Touring was rough back then. They didn't fly, they rode around the country in a bus and slept in cheap hotels. Tours would last for months.
Running on Empty is a flawless album.
When David Lindley comes in on that crying steel guitar it gets me weepy every time. RIP

David Lindley was the crown Prince of stringed instruments, I saw him with Hani Naser in Santa Cruz after he returned from a trip to Afghanistan. He had hung out with local tribesman and amazed them when he picked up their tribal instruments (rubab) and started playing them. He brought several of the instruments back and played the entire concert on them. Had a hysterical story about eating a lambs ear. Just an amazing musician that spent most of his time in the background of some of the most famous music artists of his time, during the golden age of rock.

This song is about the crew that travels with him, and sets up all the amps speakers, instruments in every city while on tour. Sometimes 3 or 4 semi-trucks follow them to each different city for that night's concert. Those guys are called "Roadies", because that's all they do. This is a tribute to those people behind the scenes, that nobody sees, and the hard work they do night after night setting up, and then tearing down everything so artists and Bands can make their music for all of us Live in concert, or at least the way they used to back in the 60s and 70s. Things aren't the same as they were. My generation was so lucky!

JB is a songwriter's songwriter. He has penned and performed some of the most iconic music in the history of American popular music. Saw him in concert numerous times over the years and he never failed to captivate the audience with epic sets and world class musicians on every instrument. Even on his solo acoustic tour he left the crowd spellbound with his talent, grace and humor. JB is a national treasure.
Agree wholeheartedly. Seeing him is like going to visit an old friend. His poetry fits his music creating memories. This always ends his shows.

Jackson Browne is a poet before before a musician. He was the voice of the '70's. I wish he'd return to performing because we need intelligent music in these tumultuously political time in America.
The album 'Running on Empty' was recorded on tour. In concert, in motel rooms and even on the bus on the highway. It is a tribute to life on tour. ☮💜🎶

My son was Little Feat's guitar technician for about 10 years. One of their guest artists at their annual Ramble On the Island in Jamaica was Jackson Browne. I have a picture of him and my son together. 🥰

There was an incredible group of musicians, singers, and songwriters in the 70's that all lived in Laurel Canyon and supported and nurtured each other. Jackson Browne, J.D. Souther, Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, Joni Mitchell, Emmylou Harris, Ry Cooder, Karla Bonoff, and several others. Their music became known as country-rock and made the 70's an incredible decade musically.
Agreed. 70’s was a unique time in the world for music. Some of the most iconic albums released during this time. Easily my favorite decade for music.

Can’t leave out Graham Parsons when talking about anything to do with Country-Rock. He turned on David Crosby and the rest of The Byrds inspiring their album “Sweetheart of The Rodeo”, who then took it with him when he connected with CSNY.
He influenced all of em in Laurel Canyon, swooning their hearts with Country ballads and heartland headswill. The Eagles never would’ve been who they were without his prompt of making Country cool for the rock n’ roll jet set.
Graham was there hanging with Keith and the Stones, turning them on to lotsa sounds that led to the heavy ongoing Country influence and was present during their Exile sessions in the South of France.
The more I learn about him, the more I love and honor the often overlooked legacy he left behind.
@@CANDOKNOWHOW Very true. I thought my post would get too long if I named EVERYONE in that group but leaving Parsons out was an oversight. There is a great documentary on Amazon Prime about the people who hung around the canyon through the 60's and 70's. Apparently Frank Zappa's house was the center and Cass Elliot was the ringleader/house mother.
@@hectorsmommy1717 Yep, I’ve seen that Laurel Canyon doc and it’s really great cause a lot of people don’t realize that everyone there were all hanging together back then, and influenced each other.
The Whiskey Au-Go-Go and The Troubadour were both hotspots for new bands back then.
Also, yer tapping into that crowd at the Rainbow Room which started around that same time. John Lennon and Harry Nilsson were regulars for a stint there early on. But Mickey Nolans from the Monkees and Alice Cooper were all drinking buddies there. Zappa didn’t drink, but everyone knew him there in LA.
That LA scene was ripe with great talent, as was SF sound the same time.
The most amazing tribute to the fans, and to all his band mates. A truly heartfelt and gracious statement. Jackson Browne is da bomb.
That Running On Empty album is flawless. Every song is great. It should be in every music lovers collection.
I was 14 when this came out and I understood how great this song was and is still. Just the fact that he was kind enough to write a song that gave credit not only to the fans but to the people who help make the show successful says a lot about the man! Thank you for this video!

Jackson Browne is a definite vibe. Laid back sophistication...
Jackson Browne toured a lot during the seventies. There was no internet, email, cell phones, etc. Traveling on a tour bus was long and difficult. Phone calls to loved ones had to wait until the band reached their venue location or hotel. Back then, long distance was very expensive as well. Jackson did several songs about being on the road, but I thinks combo of Load Out and Stay is most popular. Not only did he recognize the audience as being a part in the performance ( "People you got the power over what we do, you can sit there and wait or you can pull us through") but he also recognizes his crew. The men and women that set up the equipment and then tear it down and pack it back up after each venue. He talks about the " motor" or the bus that makes sure he he gets to the next venue on time, without fail. Very few musicians take the time to recognize their moving crew the way he does in this song.

R.I.P. David Lindley, (“Mister Dave”) on the Lap Slide, one of the great musicians of this era, and he recorded with all the biggies. That is HIS FALSETTO solo on “Stay” and I just read where NOBODY expected it, probably even Dave! Not sure he ever did it again, and never before this time, according to the story. J.B. is known as a guy always ready to support worthy causes - singing back-up, etc. Ego in-place. Still performing. 🙏🏻

A salute to the unsung heroes of music... The Roadies. Without them, every major artist wouldn't be able to put on the epic shows they do. Always loved this song. The 2nd part (Stay) is a song by Maurice Williams from the 1960's. The song was written by Williams in 1953 when he was 15 years old. He had been trying to convince his date not to go home at 10 o'clock as she was supposed to. He lost the argument, but as he was to relate years later, "Like a flood, the words just came to me."

They sampled a song called stay at the end of the song it was done by Maurice Williams and the zodiacs in 1960....1 of the beach bands from South Carolina
First time I heard this, Stay caught me offguard. I knew it from Dirty Dancing, and was curious if I'd just heard the original. The DJ didn't announce the artist, I was driving, and it was not on any kind of rotation on the station. It was another year before I heard it again. Internet was not what it is today, and this song got missed on his earlier Greatest Hits album(s). It was a long time before I finally owned a copy, but the way that The Load-out leads into Stay makes the song for me, and the relative scarcity of the track on the radio makes it all the more special when I hear it somewhere.
It's very unusual to see you go through a song without pausing it, but the way this flows, I think you got the best experience by letting it just play. Kudos and thank you. Definitely a song to just sit back, relax, and enjoy (if you like it).
Hi Polo...Im a retired 911 supervisor from a metro Atlanta suburb. We had an.officer shot and killed while on duty. Of course I would not leave until the perp was.caught and my dispatchers had some counseling. My brother , God love him, knew how hard it was for my team and I and posted this one on my Facebook feed. Common man...job without recognition...he gave us some and I will forever love this song for that memory. Jackson Browne is one of my favorites. Thank you for choosing this one.

Jackson Browne and Don Henley were room mates before they made it big Don said Jackson would bang on that piano Allllllll day long …..it sure paid off. The latter part of the 60’s and all of the 70’s produced the greatest musicians of all time in rock an roll period….and those days are lost but not forgotten !!!
I was lucky enough to see Jackson Browne celebrate this songs 20th anniversary in the place where he recorded for the album, Saratoga Springs, NY (I saw the band in 1997)

One of the most under appreciated song writers of our time . Started listening to Jackson when I was 13 and yes I had a huge crush but I’m now 62 and still listen to him .

His songs always took you somewhere because he sang a story and expressed so well what he experienced. Imagine how this tribute to them was received by his "roadies". An epic song and still so widely received after what, 50 years?
I was 17 and fell in love with him when I walked into a party at Chips house and his Late for Sky album was playing. I remember that moment like it was yesterday❤
Fast forward I was on a 6 month road trip in 1978 with 2 girlfriends in a Datsun B210 across US and every city we hit he was in concert coming up. We finally bought tickets to his Huston Texas show…….what an amazing show!
Seen him about 10 times more time since then.

He is a musical genius and one of top lyricists and composers out there who has a way of perfectly expressing in his lyrics the themes of his life with beautiful melodies. You need to listen to these introspective songs, "Running of Empty", "Fountain of Sorrow", "The Pretender" and "Doctor My Eyes" among many many others. I think his lyrics will blow you away as well as his music. Jackson Browne is just fantastic.

Saw him in a huge outdoor concert (with Jimmy Buffet & Warren Zevon) concert when this was a hit in ‘77. It was his encore song! Just imagine how the crowd went crazy when he played this.

I started listening to Jackson Browne in 1974 after I got out of the army. This brought back some fond memories, all of his music is great
I listened to Jackson Browne when I was 15 on a cassette in a boom box with my headphones on…he made me feel less alone. Saw him in concert. Stood next to him on the street in Santa Monica in 2000 and I was too nervous to say anything! It was like walking back in time.
Jackson Browne has a ton of great songs, but my favorite is, "Dr. My Eyes". Great reaction to this one. Hadn't heard it in a long time, but miraculously recalled every word!
