Is it weird that I instantly recognized the cute shirt Eric was wearing in the Q&A as the one he bought in a convenience store during the motorbike trip in Taiwan? Thanks for another great video!

You guy's content is some of my favourite on RUclips...it's one of few channels where I come back to time and again to rewatch like I would do with Brooklyn 99 or Peep Show or something. Perfect length, super interesting and your approach to travelling and life is just infectious. I've learnt so much about Japan I hope to visit for a month next year :)
P.S this is like my third time fully watching the Seoul series alone haha.

The Seoul adventure was so interesting, and I agree that food is really a prime motivator because it engages so many senses. (Nota bene: smell and sense are the same word in most languages.) Then end card here could have been an episode in itself. A lot of people are constrained by fear (mostly of failure, and often of very low odds chances of misfortune.) I think Couchsurfers in particular are more open and thus have more positive experiences.

Make your stay as long as possible. I agree completely and it is my philosophy about travelling... I followed that whenever I went anywhere. I stayed in Japan for about 5 weeks. I stayed in Turkey for 4 weeks, I was in Greece for 2 weeks... I stayed with family in Vancouver for 3 weeks, Ohio for 2 weeks, and others. I want to be there long enough to start to understand the place. I would have stayed longer in most of those places but it wasn't possible given circumstances. I hate being somewhere for only a few days. Not to mention it makes me crazy with jet lag.
Family tried to talk me out of the trip to Turkey because "terrorists" and such. I had friends who lived there so I knew it was nonsense.

    • @kydeanderic
      @kydeanderic  7 лет назад +1

Glad you made the trip to Turkey! It annoys me when people just assume a place is dangerous without any real knowledge of it. We hear warnings from people all the time and they are never correct. Hahaha. -E

Fabulous video, as always. I am going to Seoul for a week this coming spring and am SO EXCITED!! I will be re-watching all your Korean videos. I can't wait to wander around and eat weird food!
Many people are telling me things like "It's unsafe, you're crazy! What about North Korea? What about Trump? Be careful what you eat.." All from people who don't know what they're talking about, at all. So I agree with your advice: do your own research, seek out information from the knowledgeable and experienced, and disregard the baseless naysayers.

Hello both - very excited that you are visiting KL (my hometown). I've been living in the US for years now, so I am not aware of the best places to eat some of my favourite food. But I can certainly share with you some of my favs and I hope to get to try some yummy ones:
    1. Char Kuey Teow - www.foodadvisor.my/best-char-kuey-teow-kl. No guarantees if they are good, but I will use this list myself when I go back in the spring. :)
    2. Roti canai - thesmartlocal.com/read/best-mamaks-kl. I'm old-school when it comes to roti canai, I always get the plain ones with dhal curry. Roti tissue is really more of a dessert, and it may take more than the two of you to finish it. Give "maggi mee goreng" (stir fried maggi mee) if you can. These dishes go very well with "teh tarik", iced or hot. It means "pulled tea" - it's milk tea. If you like this stuff, stop by a TESCO or equivalent and buy the 3-in1 packets. I load up whenever I am home to bring back to the US!
    3. Bak kut teh - www.foodadvisor.my/best-bak-kut-teh-kuala-lumpur. Again, I have not tried these places myself. If they have the dry, spicy version as well, give that a go.
    4. Pasar malam (night market). This is really more of a place that I recommend you go to. There are tonnes of food and stuff that you can buy. www.tallypress.com/places-to-go/2016/3/28/7-night-markets-in-kuala-lumpur-selangor-you-must-not-miss. I am not familiar with these markets really, and some of them may not be close to where you are. I hope at least this gives you an idea of what they are and maybe there are smaller ones close to you. There are also morning markets, but they are quite brief and focus on selling veges, meat, etc. -- stuff that families need to cook dinner, etc.
    5. Curry noodles (aka curry laksa) - www.foodadvisor.my/best-curry-mee-kl. I believe I've been going to the one in Madras Lane, Petaling street for years since I was young (sorry I can't verify it - we just know where it is so we never bother with the address/name of the stall!). If this is the one I'm thinking of, it's very close to our "China Town". While you're here, I would recommend you trying "dry bbq meat". A famous brand is "Loong Kee Dried Meat" but they could be overpriced. Some major shopping malls might have branches or other brands.
    6. Wonton noodles. foursquare.com/top-places/kuala-lumpur/best-places-wontons. I personnaly prefer the dry version.
    7. Pan mee. www.foodadvisor.my/best-pan-mee-kl. Again, prefer the dry version.
    8. Chee cheong fun - www.timeout.com/kuala-lumpur/restaurants/guide-to-chee-cheong-fun. this is the Hong Kong version. There's also a local version my.openrice.com/klangvalley/article/k-l-s-10-must-have-chee-cheong-fun/411. Both the sweet sauce/curry versions are good. Try them with stuffed-eggplant/okra/chilli, "fu juk" (pre-deep fried tofu sheets with fish cake in between), fish ball, or anything that you find interesting as extras.
    9. I don't know of a specific place that's excellent at these, but try these snacks if you stumble upon them: www.myresipi.com/recipes?q%5Btags_name_cont%5D=kuih+muih
    10. Clay pot chicken rice my.openrice.com/klangvalley/article/10-best-claypot-chicken-rice-in-kl-pj/534
    11. Chicken rice - foursquare.com/top-places/kuala-lumpur/best-places-chicken-rice
    12. Pork noodles - www.foodadvisor.my/best-pork-noodles-kl. The one I know that's good for sure is in Subang Jaya - www.j2kfm.com/ooi-noodle-house-pork-noodles-pomander-ss15-subang-jaya/
    13. Dim sum - www.timeout.com/kuala-lumpur/restaurants/the-best-dim-sum-restaurants-in-kl. My personal favourites: egg tart, stuffed eggplants, steamed/baked bbq pork bun, chicken legs, HK style chee cheong fun, radish cake, "loh mei gai" (glutonious rice with chicken), "har gau" (shrimp dumpling), "siu mai" (pork dumpling)
    14. banana leaf rice www.timeout.com/kuala-lumpur/food-and-drink/best-banana-leaf-restaurants-in-kl. I'm not a fan of this myself, but I know many malaysians do!
    15. Asam laksa www.foodadvisor.my/best-asam-laksa-kl. I'm again not a fan of this version of laksa - it's on the sour side, and quite fishy
    16. Kaya (coconut spread) toast www.chowhound.com/post/kuala-lumpur-hainanese-kaya-toast-kl-913520. Try the half-boilled eggs also.
I hope this list will be helpful for you. I enjoyed researching this list, and i'm going to use them myself in the next few months! Hopefully, you can let me know if you both tried any, and if they are any good! :) ENJOY!
Fei, (Malaysian-Chinese living in Oregon), Tucker (corgi) and Max (corgi-swedish vallhund mix)

      Here's a few more :p
      17. Shrimp/prawn noodles www.foodadvisor.my/best-prawn-mee-kl
      18. Hokkien noodles - www.hungrygowhere.my/gallery/18-best-places-for-kl-style-hokkien-mee-in-kl-pj-*gid-ee7c3101/. These stalls/restaurants may also have "wat tan hor" noodles, which is also yummy. it's flat rice noodles, with thick eggy sauce.
      19. Rojak www.foodadvisor.my/best-rojak-kl I prefer the indian-style rojak with the crispy stuff in it.
      20. Porridge my.openrice.com/klangvalley/article/10-best-chinese-porridges-in-kl-pj/788. I like the deep-fried pig intestine version! I've wanted to try the frog version here, and I've been told that it's good. foursquare.com/v/frog-porridge-at-jalan-alor/4bae00a0f964a520cd793be3
      21. Seremban bbq char siu bun. I don't know where exactly you can fin these, but I often see them at chinese breakfast places in local areas. They are not served in dim sum places.
      22. Nasi (rice) lemak (literally means fat, but I think in this context, the rice is cooked with coconut milk, so it's more of like being enriched with coconut milk?!) - www.foodadvisor.my/best-nasi-lemak-kl
      23. Satay foursquare.com/top-places/kuala-lumpur/best-places-satay
      24. Grilled fish (ikan bakar) www.foodadvisor.my/best-grilled-fish-in-kl
      25. Oyster omelete (oh chien) www.themalaymailonline.com/eat-drink/article/our-5-favourite-places-for-oh-chien-in-kl-shah-alam-klang
      26. chinese dessert www.foodadvisor.my/best-tong-sui-kl. My personal fav is "rice ball" with black sesame filling (hot version).

Have you guys thought about doing a trip where you try to pay it forward for all the help you have been given while on trips. Example: you could tell how touched Eric was when people helped him out (Lawson chick) when he lost his wallet.
And I'm not saying it has to be country specific and I am not saying I know what kind of philanthropy you already do. I just think it's an interesting question. Like go and help build houses or volunteer on an archaeological dig, etc. I've thought about doing this in the past and considering you are volunteering your time and a lot of times they want you to pay additional money (beyond airfair and basic food and lodging) It makes me wonder how legit some of these things are. Forgive me if you have discussed this already or had done it already - you are getting to the point of so many videos that I need to start re-watching some of them again.

I would love to do something like this, but often I wonder if people that go and "help" are often more of an expense than an asset. It's hard to shake out if a charity is "good" or not, unfortunately. I could see us doing something in the future by running a fundraiser for something via our channel if we had the right honest connections. It's something we'd love to do. -E

Japanese use the same sign for Onsen/bath house. I wonder why you have never seen one in Japan?? Probably it's because a public bathhouse has become an endangered species in Tokyo. That chimney looks like the one of the public bath house in my childhood neighborhood so much, and makes me feel so nostalgic. Always nice to see cultural similarities between two countries.

Speaking of bad advice, and it happened to a friend of mine...... One of her friends told her to bring pocket tissues to Japan because they didn't sell them in the drugstore.Of course, she soon realized that although she couldn't buy them, she could receive them for free from pretty much anywhere (with a good and bad variety of advertising).
