Totally agree. Domingo is also one of my favourite even I am bashing him all the time for some of his bad singing. But no doubt he is a good actor and is always very professional in the performances.
Per usual for Maestro Domingo, despite wounded wing, he sings. His style of professionalism is an exemplar far too many younger entrants don't follow, to the detriment of us all, as lovers of fine art and society at large. His voice isn't just pure notes sung perfectly as if by glinting mechanical rote. His voice imbues the longings of humanity to their color and that is his hallmark. Haters on RUclips are a dime a dozen, colossal talents such as Maestro Domingo are a dazzling rarity. One day he will be gone and I suspect at least a few of the churlish carpers will regret their venom. He is a gentle man who merits nothing but gentle respect. That he is also one of the finest tenors who have ever lived is a saving grace upon an undeserving throng.

It looks like Nello Santi, who was a renowned conductor of Italian opera. But he also had the distinction of being the only conductor who was hated by Joan Sutherland, and vice versa!

….PD has always been a lyrical tenor, his base remained over the decades. He never became a Tenore dramatico. He lacked later the dramatic potential, whatever role he did on stage. That’s what he stated himself. Wonderful in all lyric aspects, limited in dramatic development. At this stage here, he was able to perform Mozart easily and sounds wonderfully balanced. Later I witnessed Cosi Fan Tutte, where he had to work hard and this was audible.
Please don't insult him by mentioning Kaufmann in the same sentence. At least Domingo sounds like a tenor and can nuance his vocal colour and dynamics. Not just howl in forte/fortissimo. Great Mozart this isn't however.
Kaufmann? I heard him 2 times in Brussels. They tell he was pushed by industry. I say the audience before did t listen. Also went for Calleja when Malta became Head. A lot of volume, not yelling from Calleja. I don't like the voice. Kaufmann started with cielo e mar. And ended with nessun dorma. He deserves his place. This no opera. Two mariachi songs with placid domingo. I like it.
I was lucky enough to see Domingo first at the NYCOpera, then at the Met in so many different roles. I always found his voice thrilling, with a beautiful tone and some steel for the heroic roles he eventually undertook. I’m not convinced about the baritone roles, but he’s always musical. This is gorgeous Mozart singing, with plenty of hormones! Btw, he said in his books that he disliked the character of Don Ottavio.
Sad to read that. Don Ottavio is such an underestimated character. Not a coward nor a wimp... just a very young man, almost a boy, who has to mature very quickly and in addition has lost two of his more experienced male friends, since the Commendatore was murdered and Don Giovanni turned out to be his enemy...
@@annann3745 Rolando Villazon is a very positive Ottavio in his recording with Yannick Nezet-Seguin, creating the feeling that although Anna may not appreciate his kindness, he is holding her together when she needs it most.
I am just wondering what happened to him in the next 50 years. He sounds completely different from what it is after 1980s. He is nasal and sounds like he was straining all the time. At that time (he was like 29?), he was still a little bit nasal but basically nothing to worry about. He wasn't straining and it's a good voice. Domingo has a heavy spinto voice, which mean usually you can't expect lots of agility. The fact that he could sing the cadenza so well is amazing and unbeliveable. So again, what happened to him?

Jesus Muñoz que sabrás tú, de opera inútil, sólo te dedicas a despotricar a placido Domingo, la opera como bien dices son otras cosas, pero la más importante es ir a ver a un tenor y se te pongan los pelos de punta, y en eso placido como en casi todo era el mejor.

Incluso la crítica no ha sido favorable . Como en el Cid q la cantó un tono bajo y fue muy criticado. Otros cantantes sin embargo han emocionado en este teatro y han puesto el teatro boca abajo. En el 91 en la gala el gran triunfador fué kraus q tuvo q salir dos veces a saludar y le tiraron flores. Marketing!!!!

"Heavy" you're using the term incorrectly. His voice is dark, but he doesn't sing "heavy" or with "weight"
He was quite young, not so 'heavy' then but not a Lyric Tenor. Full Voice and well placed.
