Schoolboy Q might not be an amazing lyricist, and his new album might have a handful of filler hooks, but Oxymoron also shows him riding a variety of beats with an impressive level of precision. Not only that, but a number of tracks here bring back the grit and vulgarity of 90s gangsta rap, and give it a progressive instrumental backdrop.

It got better with time, I think. I still prefer Habits but this is a good project no doubt
So ScHoolboy Q features 2 Chainz on his lp, but not Ab-Soul.. That feature completely downgraded the album..
Ab-Soul would have been on the album, but the sample didn't clear. Also, one short verse from a below mediocre artist shouldn't downgrade the album.
Doesn't even matter though, the track he is on is tight as hell despite an admittedly weak verse. Soulo is alright, but I don't miss him on this album - I don't feel like he is gritty enough for Oxymoron. Also lol that two people named Eamonn responded to you....uncommon

Im not gonna lie 2 Chainz's verse on Schoolboy's song What They Want, was actually pretty good.

I thought the beat selection was questionable. Have you heard YG My Krazy Life? The song with Q is dope. I think with Q's style he needs good production.

I'm still wading through the old discography of artistes I listen to today, and listening to Q on his earlier projects compared to now is such a trip.

(Deluxe Version) Yea the album starts off and finishes greatly. There's only ONE song I don't fuck with and that's Grooveline. Not because it's a bad song, but I just can't listen to it. I find myself skipping it most of the time. I really enjoyed this album though. Makes me want to relisten to all his music.

I personally was disappointed with this album but it wasn't terrible. I just had extremely high expectations. I wanted a good all around hip hop album. And that's not what I got IMO. Still bumping Cilvia Demo cause that shit goes hard.

This is by far my favorite Q album. Blank Face was just ok and Habits And Contradictions was alright. But this one never misses for me.

I'm happy you reviewed this! Schoolboy Q will continue to progress as a rapper, but he is confident in who he is as a rapper & he's not trying to imitate anyone else on his label. He has a story that is unique & I think his career will last longer than a lot of people predict because he is so honest.

The purge wasnt just the best song the album it was prob my favorite gangsta rap song
I wanted a different album than the one he made but I still love the one he made. I wanted him to be more lyrical cause Q can be lyrical when he wants to be, he done it. What he wanted to do was make a a hardcore, 90's influenced Gangsta rap album and he succeeded. Some of the hooks are filler like Hell of a Night and The Purge, Gangsta is a throwaway to me. The rest of the album is really solid, great production and Q rides it perfectly. I even like what they want with 2 Chainz that record is tight.
I'm sure he just chose not to be lyrical lol

There isn't much that I can disagree with here. This is the review that made me subscribe. Umma buy and have this cd for as long as possible. Finally you hit the nail on the head with ya description of Hoover St. It just sounds like the creepiest shit ever, but he dropped the dopest lyrics on their.

I respect needledrop because he gives reasons for why he feels how he feels about albums/music but I never agree with him. What You Want was dope af. Hell of a Night was dope af. Man of the Year is one of my favorite tracks start to finish especially the hook. And I loved the bonus tracks. Initially Los Awesome was the only song I wasn't feeling, but even it grew on me big time. I'd give it at least an 8.5 with more of a lean towards 9.

I would hate on 2 Chainz, Wiz, Rick Ross and every trap-rapper out there so much just because they don't make deep meaningful music. It was partly due to TND that I started to appreciate more music outside of rap, too. All the people rapping about their dicks and their cars and their bitches have a place in the musical spectrum. Of course they have to be good at it though. The old school Hip Hop has been dying lately. And i'm talking about the bangers that you could blast in your car and girls would come rushing to you. That kind of upbeat, ignorant, dirty rap that you just have to love. Schoolboy Q is a modernized version of this. You only see the surface. This album is his life changing as his daughter is born and how he stops doing what he's been doing throughout the first half of the album: drugs and bitches and weed and money and all of that gangster shit. It's an awesome album.

Oxymoron is great but I wouldn't say it's his best. He really defined his style on Habits and Contradictions in my opinion. Schoolboy is almost always on point with having the instrumentals/hooks/verses come together perfectly in the nice gritty gansta rap feel and that's what makes him a good artists.
