      They are very practical stories. They contain courage, compassion and intelligence. Very useful! Especially, you do not need to pray, believe a God or come to a special place to understand him or Buddhism. You have the answer for all suffering happening everyday. Just sit on a chair, practise like he said and you will get good experience and better life. 3 years ago, I was easy to get angry and my home was like a battlefield between 3 adults but now my home is a war of 2 people. I cannot help them yet but when they try to make me angry, to make a circle of anger which never ends until someone stops, they totally fail. I know my anger and calm myself

    When I was around twenty, I undertook an impossible journey to reach the Buddhist Temple in a neighboring town. I had been there with my father for the new years celebrations a couple of times. We were in a bad state, left almost destitute after my mother passed away a few years earlier. She appeared larger-than-life to me in a dream, and showed me an old photo of myself as a much older man, in robes. Having been to the temple by car, I had the impression that it wasn't too far. I elected to mount my bicycle and head East to escape our situation. There were many rolling hills along the way. An hour went passed, I was exhausted and there was no shade on route. Every time I reached the peak of another rise, I'd look expectantly for the tell-tale gold ceramic roof tiles. Another row of hills, and another hour went by. I kept cycling. I told myself, it can't be much further now, it must be over the next one. Up and down I pressed on, hot sweat ran off me in sheets, but I kept going. Just one more hill, then the next one, and the next one. Four hours later I arrived, and discovered to my own and the surprise of the monks who met me, that I'd traveled 80kms to get there, so determined was I. Only one hill at a time, no other way could I have, did I make it to where I was headed. Had I known how far it was in advance, I'd have never believed it was possible.

    The best lesson here besides encouraging is this: Never ask an unnecessary question. But especially never ask a question that you already know the answer to. We should never ask a question that puts our counterpart in a compromising position. Sometimes an answer is given unwillingly, and it results in hurt or annoying feelings.

  • @RichardHarlos
    @RichardHarlos 5 лет назад +13

    Given the Buddha's stance on right speech, it's impossible to believe the story is actually what Buddha said.
    Right speech must not only be helpful, it must also be true. Although we can understand that the intention of those three people were to encourage the travelers to keep going, right speech is not only helpful, it must also be true. What they said was not true, therefore this cannot be with the Buddha would have said.
    Imagine using a story that itself is a lie, to teach a lesson that lying is okay, as long as the intention is to be helpful.

      I have a feeling that the rigid Buddha of the Buddhist religion was very different from the actual wise Buddha who didn't have such narrow and pre-determined ideas about morality, and the right thing to do in every situation before you meet the situation.

    • @paulocunha3799
      @paulocunha3799 5 лет назад

      @@jamespower5165 It is true that no matter how perfectly you draw someone's portrate you still can't make that real one. Even identical twins have differences. So I agree with you. But what do you mean by "narrow and pre-determined ideas about morality, and the right things to do in every situation before you meet the situation?"

    • @jamespower5165
      @jamespower5165 5 лет назад +1

      @@paulocunha3799 Saying something like "You should always speak the truth regardless of consequences" is an example of the kind of narrow-minded morality I am talking about. It is worth having general guidelines such as exercising kindly intent and actually understanding a situation before you react to it. You can even include a guideline that says to PREFER the truth by default. But a rigid directive such as ALWAYS speaking the truth is nearsighted and juvenile. Every situation is different and we can't always anticipate the complexity of life. Rigid rules will actually be an impediment to natural virtue in many cases. I can't imagine the Buddha, quite possibly the wisest person that ever lived, falling for such a trap
      My own understanding of something like the famous Eightfold Path is that there is no special significance to the number eight. If Buddha had lived in the computer age, he might have added a ninth directive, namely: Never double-click. Always right click and mindfully choose the correct action from the choice panel. The real point is that, Buddhist lore is practiced moment to moment, in the process of ordinary living. It isn't special rituals, or chanting mantras, or burning incense, or offering sacrifices, in the usual custom of the time. You weren't trying to conjure up some magic to help sweep away life's problems. You just fixed the way you looked at life, and the way you acted. I'm not trying to denigrate the value of serious practice which is the essence of Buddhism, but rather the pompous theory built around it which is the stuff of musty textbooks rather than of living, breathing life.
