- This is a DIY Mini Split AC install I did to cool my garage in Florida. I am building my own garage office/studio space.. It costs kind of a lot to have a professional install these things, but it turns out you can buy reasonably nice machines for only a few hundred bucks! Here's how to make it go.

This project was a lot easier than I thought - it starts to get scary when you hear you have to 'pull a vacuum' on the line and connect coolant lines, but just take it step by step and also watch this video, and also this other video from @LRN2DIY together you pretty much cant screw it up! • DIY Mini Split Install...

How has this Held up since when you installed it? How's the Performance? Any Issues So Far? Saw this On eBay don't see any Warranty on the Units. However, I was Looking at another Company Acekool who Claims to have 10Year Warranty, Costs Only About $100 More. But I haven't Seen any Reviews Of them, They don't even have a Legit Website Showing their Mini Splits, That Means Certainly No Customer Service Or Support after the 30-60Day eBay Protection Period. So that Makes Me Skeptical. So, I'm thinking of getting this one, It's got a good warranty and Customer Service and If its a Reliable & Dependable Unit.
So far its been PERFECT. Im in Orlando Florida, and it is in the 90's every day. My garage is cinderblock without additional insulation and I keep it at 77 in here 24/7. No problems at all. Its WAY quieter than I expected, both on the inside unit and outside. Its only been a few months, but I expect if the seals are good after a couple months theres no reason to expect that should change. The air is ice cold coming out. Im blown away by how cheap it is. I keep reading about quotes of like $9k to have a mini split installed and I did this for a few hundred bucks, its wacky!
You didn’t show the drain line or the electrical hook up lol. Just basically mounting and draining the line

I agree that I maybe did some things rather…DIY. But it’s ice cold, it’s grounded and on its own circuit so I hope I didn’t do anything that will compromise its long term operation..

Core question, where did you install the water exhaust line? These mini splits need to expel water. I had to run a separate line outside.
Since I had to go UP over and down with the coolant lines, the water line couldn’t join them, and it follows the wall over to the front of the garage and sneaks out next to the garage door track. The concrete has a little 1” drop down there so I let it pour onto the driveway. I don’t know why I didn’t take video of that part!
Wow Nice job 👍 seems it was a bit of a pita getting lines all the way up in there .. BTW what is the amps requirement for that unit .. nice that it’s 240v you can add like a few solar panels with micro inverter directly to it and offset the electric use..
I actually found a 120v one! And it’s only 1000 watts when it’s running so that would be 8.5 amps.
We’re definitely going to get solar next season after the pool gets installed. So I’ll be able to run this thing for free, Max Power!!
I am in alabama, which is like florida, except it gets to 20f in the winter, and +30f in the summer due to our hot air coming from texas instead of the ocean. I am getting shipping containers for storage next week, and was examining my options. I didn't want to pay the options, and knew I could do something with a vacuum pump to solve this, in fact I bought one for $15 last year at a yard sale. Your video really brought together all of the bits that I will need to install some mini splits.
Awesome! Yeah, one of these would definitely cool a shipping container. That would be a pretty quick and easy install, too!

Sorry but I am going to be that guy. Your install looks like crap. I'm in Florida and also did my own install. Why on earth didn't you use lineset covers (linehide) on the outside wall? You can even paint them to match the house. It would look so much better than that eyesore you created. Guess what the number one fail is on these? Not torquing the flares to the correct spec. They end up leaking. I bought an A/C style torque wrench for my install.
Mine runs down the inside wall in the garage which I covered with linehide. My toolbox covers most of it also. I came out low on the wall poked it outside and ran the lineset and conduit to the condenser also in linehide same color as the gutters. You can't see it because the landscape covers it. The only thing you see on mine is the condenser. No hideous tangled lineset. I see you used a stand. Better than being on the ground so kudos for that. I used an approved hurricane wall bracket on mine. On the outside disconnect I put in a surge protector which is also important. I used a Rectorseal RSH-50. It has alien technology so if it blows there is a gas inside that takes the hit before the electronics so it can take multiple hits.
It just seems if you are making a video you should take some pride in your work and also your new home. I hate to be that guy this this install is so bad I had to comment.
With all that said I can have my main door open and the garage stays cool. Not sure what size you used. I have a 2 car and a single car garage. I put mine in the single and used 1.5 ton (18,000 B.T.U.'s) and it's amazing. I hope yours is amazing as well for you.
No worries at all - the world NEEDS "That Guy." I, for instance, had no idea that LineHide existed and now I do! Im going to get me some of that stuff and clean up the inside (I did mention in the video that I planned to run some sort of metal casing down the side of my house to hide this. There are also three other metal conduits that run up the side of my house near this same spot for the big AC, so it really wont add much as far as industrial garbage on the side of the house.
I used a 12,000 BTU and its a two car garage and, as you know, its been in the 90's all week and this thing keeps it super cool in here and is crazy quiet, I am wildly impressed with it. I do wonder if my not using a torque wrench will cause it to leak in the future. If it does, I'll definitely get my hands on one of those to redo the fittings. But in my general experience with fluid lines (I design immersion cooling dielectric fluid systems) I've sort of got a knack for how tight these fittings need to be. Not discounting the proper specs, of course, I recognize and agree I should use proper specs, the engineering was done for a reason. But as a mechanical engineer, I also know theres a bit of wiggle room in those specs.
"Looks like crap" is sort of my design aesthetic, Im an example of regular people who suck at things the first time :)

Every guy who installed one of these and had a leak also felt they had the magical enginerd hand torque wrench meter. :)
Not sure if you are new to Florida but I would highly recommend biting the bullet and spring for standby generator. Buy once cry once. My house is 3200 sq ft 2 A/C’s plus the minisplit. We also have natural gas in our area which makes it easy. I have a Generac 22KW. When FPL gives me the finger it comes on automatically and runs everything as if it were on the utility. No unplugging stuff no filling gas cans it’s just seamless.
If you have to unhook the lines I’m pretty sure you can pump down the system and have all the refrigerant in the condenser, valve it off so you don’t lose any. Of course after re-connection you would run the vac pump.
Having nice looking network closets is also a thing of mine.. I have an amazing low voltage guy. This guy can get a wire where nobody else can. He also makes everything look pristine. He did all my color night vision cameras, sound, wifi all inside and outside etc etc. I had him drop lines in my bathrooms so I could install Toto’s. He’s in WPB. Sometimes it’s worth it to pay someone. I do 99% DIY but attics aren’t my thing. :)

@@SPACEDESIGNWAREHOUSE I don't remember why I was mad enough to unsubscribe. I must have watched something about how my taxes subsidize Tesla. I'm mad because when I work any overtime I make less per hour after taxes than just working the minimum. When I do the math it's like those 1.5x overtime hours pay 17$ an hour when they should be 50$ if it wasn't for my whole week getting bumped to the next bracket. Its not surprising why young people don't work anymore. BTW I drive a 1988 BMW 325ix AWD and a 2000 GMC Safari AWD.
@@Throbbing_Erectionist My brother in law would piss you off. lol He has 2 Tesla's. Got rid of his last gas vehicle a Ford Exploder. He put a deposit down on the Cybertruck so he will have 3 Tesla's. I added a 20amp circuit in the garage so he can charge them when he visits. I don't ever see an EV in my future. Drill baby drill!
