I had to make a quick trip to see Clint before the serious mods start on the x5m. We know this is going to end up pretty crazy and i really wanted to experience it in stock form. I genuinely can't believe how good this is to drive and how well it hides its size.

[a] How does it hide its weight? Active Roll Stability (or ARS) - also known as Dynamic Drive - uses hydraulic (electromechanical) sway bars (at each axle) to essentially eliminate all body roll. In essence, it helps to maintain a flat ride, without any of the downsides of statically stiff sway roll bars. This also provides exceptionally crisp steering response and nearly flawless turn-in. The system also dials in a neutral handling attitude, in real time, mid-corner. Interestingly, it was also available in the E60 Non-M vehicles (with the Sport package), but not the E60 M5 (it was also available in the E6x 7 series of the same vintage). As such, some argue that the E60 535i Sport (for example) has superior handling characteristics to the E60 M5. Why BMW M chose to leverage this technology in its M SUVs and not its M sedans/coupes is not entirely understood. (Note: Porsche makes similar technology available as an option, in the form of Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control or PDCC, in the Cayenne, Panamera, and 911).
[b] It is true that the ZF 6HP in the E70 X5M is identical to the ones found in the standard X5. The difference is in the calibration of the shift maps/tables (of which the TCU has thousands), in conjunction with the fuel cut and torque reduction calibrated in the DME maps. Many do not know that the ZF 6HP was designed and co-developed by BMW and ZF to compete with dual-clutch transmissions in terms of shift speed, response, feel, and comfort (depending on mode), and efficiency. It is capable of sub-80 millisecond shifts and features clutch-to-clutch shifts; that is, the torque converter is completely offline between shifts (and is typically only used to get smoothly launch the car from a stop). It also sports a launch control program, which allows first gear slip, in tandem with finely controlled torque converter slip/lock-up. When the E70 X5M was originally test driven by automotive journalists, many compared the transmission to dual-clutch gearboxes; and some even mistakenly believed it was equipped with a dual-clutch transmission. It's that good. Further, ZF used the 6HP as the shift speed benchmark when designing the 8HP transmission, noting how the 6HP already had achieved the shift speed potential of a dual-clutch transmission. BMW purposely softened the transmission's characteristics in non-M vehicles, as they are positioned toward more laid back, and occasionally sporty, driving. However, the full potential of any (2nd generation) 6HP is just a flash away. Unfortunately, not even xHP Flashtool has achieved what BMW's M division was able to (with the X5M and X6M); this would require further development of their shift maps - a tall order. Technically speaking, in terms of pure potential (and not individual vehicle calibration), the 8HP's shift speed is no different than that of the 2nd-gen 6HP. It all comes down to the calibration (as earlier noted). Another little known fact - ZF is who Porsche has partnered with to build their PDK dual-clutch transmissions. And, ZF asserts that the 2nd-gen 6HP and 8HP have the same shift speed potential as the PDK. The 2nd-gen 6HP was considered a quantum leap in automatic transmission development, by engineers and automotive journalists the world over. There is no longer any aspect of dual-clutch transmissions that holds a performance advantage over ZFs latest automatic transmissions (the ZF automatics now even weigh less than the equivalent DCT, at the same torque holding capacity). Yes, high-performance vehicles still feature DCTs today mostly to appeal to the residual (and, actually outdated) cachet that those in the market for high-performance vehicles associates with DCTs, but not necessary due to any real performance advantage. The one exception is with mid-engine/rear-engine vehicles; where a DCT's shorter overall length is generally the only option.
So, any time you encounter a 2nd-gen 6HP or 8HP with less than stellar shifts, it was intentionally calibrated that way and is unrelated to the potential of the actual hardware/software.

I owned both E60 550iA with Dynamic Drive and E63 M6 (and drove E60 M5 many times) and although DD helps a lot compared to non-DD equipped equivalent car, it's nowhere near as good handling system as an M EDC suspension of the same model year. Besides, DD is prone to leaks and costly failures. Biggest trans problem of the E70 X5 M is not the 6HP gearbox itsef, but the xdrive drivetrain components. And of course the engine - first gen S63 not even the TU version of the F10 M5, this is a powertrain that has so many inherent design and individual component flaws (similar to the N63) it is now notorious. As a new car with warranty E70 X5 M might have been impressive - now it is just a rapidly depreciating money pit IMHO.

    Hi Guys,
the "M" badge was on earlier E53's (from 04 facelift I think, my E53 3.0D has this badge from factory) and only denotes an "sports" interior options setup per my BMW documents, major one being a different display layout. This badge looks like an old E53 one someone has stuck on, because I have not yet seen any original E70 with these badges fitted from factory (but happy to be corrected on this). You need to get the 2010 E70 LCI update to get the 8 speed box. This had extra options like HUD and electric tailgate and expensive fancy suspension available. If this is a real M car, it should have the 4.4 twin turbo S63 V8. The 0 to 97Kmh on that is quoted as 4.0 seconds.
