It also has facilities for scientific research and exploration, making it a valuable asset for studying the Arctic region and its ecosystem.

The Russians are kicking our butts when it comes to ice breaking boats.
Is it commercially viable or a government program to support their shipping industry?
@@nunyabusiness5075 I have no clue but I do know that they are really good at getting boats through the ice.
@@MichaelW-vj6wx Well, it kind of matters, if this is just a Apollo type program to the Russians then sure it's impressive, but not something anybody else is trying to do. Not much butt kicking going on if there isn't at least one other country interested in trying. That's why I get the impression it's not commercially viable, if there was money to be made, there would be more parties interested.

Sorry, TWO NUCLEAR REACTORS? It’s insane how powerful those ships have to be. Very impressive!
It can produce that power for like 20 years without refueling that's the impressive part of nuclear power
Probably for redundancy too.
It is not mentioned in the video but for propulsion and powering the ship you only need one, the second one is used in case of power outages in the remote parts of Russia or where ever power is needed (oil rigs etc.)
@@filthy6033That s practical thinking! 👍
@@filthy6033why aren't nuclear reactors used in conventional container ships
How it works is it rides of top of the ice and the weight of the ship weighs down and breaks the ice it has a specially built shaped hull

Read the story of what they had to go through to finally get a working nuclear reactor into that thing. Is pretty amazing. I don't know that anyone else would have went through it but I don't think they had a choice by the time they got to that point.
the story with nuclear powered boats is that the rest of the world outlawed them because of fears of "nuclear power" in 1950's I believe russia is the only country to be running nuclear powered boats still to this day.
Something the rest of the world needs to catch up on.
Its so big we Can make one small village there
In fact, these ships can be called that. People live on these ships for months. I remember hearing a story about how one father worked on this ship and brought boots to his daughter from different parts of Russia where he was. But when he returned home, his daughter was already growing up.

More ships should be nuclear, it would save so much fuel and help the environment. Realistically the only reason why there arent more ships with nuclear propulsion is due to fear of the public and cost. However the upfront cost of a nuclear propulsion system could easily pay itself off since it basically would never need to be refueled (we have nuclear subs now that cant be refueled because they where designed to go their entire lifespan without nuclear refueling). As for the fear aspect, people just need to do some research and theyd realize how safe it actually is. Fossil fuel polition has actually caused MANY more deaths than nuclear ever has.
Amm it doesn't really break it ship goes on top of the ice and its Weight breakes the ice 😉
But it's not wrong. It breaks ice, as you said.
The ship still breaks the ice. Yes, its gravity assisted, but that's irrelevant. It is the weight of THE SHIP that breaks the ice.

75000 hp can be achieved by Marine Diesel Engine as well.
Saving time from often bunker operations
Sure…that’s not why it’s nuclear powered.
Plus the added diesel costs
@@roberto0561 why plus? It is not adding it is a replacement.
That engine would take a lot space than a nuclear one plus it will require constant maintenance which is not really a factor for nuclear engines. Plus it can go on for at least a decade without refuelling making it best for exploration vessels like these icebreakers. Also diesel engine are prone to jamming and damage in conditions like Canada let alone their survival in Arctic.

There is basically no chance to be rescued because what else could break the ice to get to you? I guess it would still run with heat for basically forever because of its nuclear reactors. If it sank you would most likely die regardless because something crazy would have to happen and I'm not sure what happens when a ship with a active nuclear reactor sinks...
