  • My one year update after bottom surgery vaginoplasty for gender confirmation surgery for a transgender woman at Montreal GRS with Dr. Brassard. I discuss my satisfaction and recovery as a transgender woman who was assigned male at birth.
    Highlights:
    🏥 What's the process of getting in line for transgender surgery and the numerous hoops trans individuals must jump through to get the surgery they desire such as vaginoplasty?
    💉 I discuss the importance of having supportive doctors who are willing to work with patients to make informed decisions about their healthcare.
    🙏 What were my fears about complications from surgery and the difficulty of making the decision to undergo such a major medical procedure?

    Thank you for this.I am a 49 year old Transwoman only recognising and transitioning about 8 weeks ago. I am loving my life, but one thing is the lack of support for me as an older Trans Woman. So really appreciate what you are doing here.

      Yes, this was something I noticed in 2017 as I began my transition and have just tried to create resources that didn't exist then. It's gotten better with lots more resources available on multiple platforms and sources. Good luck, it's hard and it's worth it.

    Glad you're doing well at 1 year. I (trans guy) just hit 6 months post-op since my surgery in Montreal. Still the odd tenderness here and there, but overall recovered and living life again. Getting surgery was one of the best things I've ever done. I hope things keep going well for you and you get some more rest soon!

    I've finally had my paperwork go in to Montreal a couple of months ago, I have the financial approval from Ontario, and I'm in that waiting phase, so coming across this today was really timely. Thank you for sharing your experience! I have to admit that I'm very anxious about recovery, so all stories of it being worth it are sooooo welcome right now. I'm very happy that it's been so wonderful for you!

    Kate, I am going to ask you a question because it may help with my transition. I know it is personal and you do not have to answer. I am an older trans person and want to avoid any surgeries. I am curious if you have had any kind of FFS. You are beautiful and I hope I attain your level of well-being and kindness.

    The other day, going back a couple of weeks ago, I contacted Dr Petryk here in Alberta about what forms of bottom surgeries the Montreal clinic offers for MtF patients. During the call he mentioned that it sounds like I'm moving forward in my transition, in addition to advising me to visit the clinic's website and contac them. After I got off the phone I realized what he just said implied, that on some level I am seeking surgical intervention. On a conscious level I feel somewhat uncertain, but I have also been researching and weighing my options. Historically this is something I usually do once I've made up my mind that I actually intend to pursue something. Anyhow, I'm just waiting to hear back from the clinic and may make a follow up phone call with them regarding the emails I had sent. Honestly, I still don't know what I'm getting into here. 😅

    • @KateMadden
      @KateMadden  Год назад +1

      I thought about with and without a canal but, in the end, I didn't want to be in a position where I wanted a revision in the future so went with a canal even though the recovery is a lot simpler without. Good luck as you get closer!

    Thank you for this vid too Kate. I'm at the stage where i'm "on the list" here in Alberta and am not 100% sure if i want to chance the surgery - it is a major one. However, you have put my mind a little more at ease. So maybe the dedire has moved up a notch. Do you think moving to BC would actually be beneficial in the level of acceptance/care for Transgender medical care vs Alberta? My Divorce is just getting finalized and my life is starting to open up to possibilities like moving(im over 50) ... so i was curious about that. Stay well, and thank you for bring an inspiration 🧡💙

    • @KateMadden
      @KateMadden  4 месяца назад

      There are less hurdles in BC and more people who can support you, e.g. you can see a nurse practitioner for HRT and even surgical readiness assessments. You do go to the back of the line for surgery when you move because of changing provincial health authority.
      I have had more issues of transphobia in Vancouver than I did anywhere in Alberta. I think it's because there are so many of us and we are sprinkled throughout the city and, because there's not a lot of Trans specific activities outside of Pride, you are doing things everybody else is doing and bumping into bigots here and there.

    When I came out to my primary Dr he said ok what do we need to do? I told him starting doses and he wrote the script. That was 3 years ago. Did hrt for 4 1/2 months and stopped. By wives request. She doesn’t support me. I restarted a month ago and it was at a place called planned parenthood. The Dr listened to me and asked me what dose I wanted. I said 4 mg a day. He said ok. Wife doesn’t know. So we will see how things go.
