The 3rd test was the crucial decider for both teams that day. The ABs won by one point 25-24 which I think was to occur for the next 4 tests between the ABs and Wallabies. 10-9 to ABs 1985, 13-12 to the Wallabies and 13-12 to the ABs in 1986.

the shape of the ball was something else back then but it required more skill to execute the kicks. Great stuff

Great memory and best birthday present on my 17th birthday 18 August 1984, and a rugby series win over a good Aussie team....but we were just better😊

The long rugby league style defensive line is refreshingly absent during those good old days!

What a hell of a game. Makes me a bit nostalgic for the old days too, no garish sponsors on the jerseys...

Will never forget watching it on a farm on the Coromandel. Such a great series, and yep we were the better side! Remember this Wallaby team went on to win their much celebrated Grandslam in the UK, and we beat them over there...

Was never keen watching tests on the telly from the SCG....lines were poorly marked, camera wasn't on halfway and the ground was bloody well marked off centre. It was a bloody guess sometimes where on the field the play was!

I agree, but there was something about the SCG...

Robbie Deans is now the coach of Australia. I must agree with the shirt designs. The All Black strip of today is made out of some aero dynamic fabric with panels on it, looks more like a cycling shirt, mind you most teams have similar strips these days.

This game is interesting for a couple of reasons. This was Robbie Deans come back match. He missed the first two tests, and was reinstated under controvercial circumstances. The incumbant was Alan Hewson who was dropped. Alan Hewson was due to become the most capped All Black at the time. The lineouts were a mess or a lottery before lifting was legalised.

Robbie Dean's replaced Hewson after the first test loss.Deans played in the 2nd and 3rd test victories

Arthur Stone and Pokere played a left/right centre formation. I don't think NZ did that again.

The Australian rugby balls such as the Ballymore balls were badly balanced, very heavy tight panel balls, that were a lot more difficult to kick compared to the black end addias balls ( best ball ever invented) NZ used at the time. Alan Hewson was dropped after the 1st test loss in this series because his kicking style and technique struggled with the Australian balls.Robbie Dean's style suited the balls much better. That was the difference in this tight fought series.

The Wallaby/Ballymore balls were made by Steeden

@@darren2514fv that's right, and they were far more difficult balls for kicking and passing. Less room for error when place kicking goals. The very reason rugby league players were appalling goal kickers compared to Union players. Once Adidas produced the ball with black ends , goal kicking became so much easier . Beautifully balanced ball for punting and drop kicking too.

Yeah, the Adidas balls were great. Personally, as a lock, I loved the Gilbert balls. Excellent handling ball.
