You provide the clearest and most concisely presented Word tutorials I’ve come across. Never a wasted word or vague point. They really are a joy to watch.

The keep with next feature is very useful and I didn't know about it. Thank you very much!

Another reason to use space after on the header and not a double paragraph return… so that the Keep With Next sees the next paragraph and not the extra manual line as the “next.”

This was super helpful. Styles have always intimidated me. I am still not super confident with it. I would like to know how to modify existing styles. I was working on a brief that had headings and subheadings and I needed to modify the styles and it kept coming out wonky.

Do you have examples of blank word documents that already include your tips (styles, fonts, etc.) ?

Thanks for all your great videos. I learn so much from them. Word Styles are very frustrating to me. Every month, I first add dates to my document and select them all and format as heading 1. When I hit enter, the style heading 1 remains and doesn't change to normal. This also happens when I bold selected text, it doesn't return to normal.
Have you come across this issue?

Fine presentation, as usual. One "bone" though is that paragraph styles ordinarily do carry font formatting. You can't create a paragraph style without it, as far as I know.

No, you can actually create a Style that does not enforce font formatting other than what's Normal within the document. Otherwise, there would be no point in having a paragraph style versus a character style versus a linked (paragraph & character combined) style.

    Hi Deborah.
I was using styles a lot a few years ago.
But then I no longer needed to use them so much.
But they are very useful, and more people should know more about them.
    These tips are amazing!
I think Microsoft need to do a lot of work in this area to modernise the code and the interface for styles and templates. Its so 1980's

While following your tutorial I saw that a style type of mine was "linked paragraph and character." But that setting was greyed out and I wasn't able to change it. I saw this style was based on "Normal" and Normal style type was "paragraph" and that also was greyed out. What gives?

Some Styles like Normal and all of the Heading Styles are linked by default (and that makes sense, since both are always controlling both character- and paragraph-level formatting). If it's a custom Style you set up, and you're now sure it needs to NOT be a linked Style, you may need to delete it and re-make it.

I was a Word expert 30 years ago. Styles were a good tool then. Microsoft has messed up the Styles function so badly that it is unusable now and I'd sworn off Word for 15 years. I have recently taken up a task where Word would be a good tool, if it worked. Is there a way to get back the styles functionality of 30 years ago or do I have to find a Word Processor that is actually usable, like maybe Google Docs?
