I have an advice for every woman who wants to go to Egypt (I am Egyptian). You should not wear tight clothes that highlight the body or open clothes in public places. You should also go with an Egyptian guide because sellers exploit foreigners and take advantage of the difference in conversion from Egyptian pounds to dollars and sell at prices Expensive, and I want to say that Egypt has 28 governorates, and in each of them there are tourist attractions, beautiful landscapes, and wonderful beaches. They will make that decision on their own. Thanks to this woman above for her advice. Dressing imho, in the Arab world/north africa is not only about "covering up for decency" it's about covering up for protection from the sun and the sand--- that can cut like glass when the wind blows it around at times. other than that foreign women wearing loose, shawl clothing nothing too tight, or revealing seems to suffice - ON A GROUP TOUR. One thinks "it's all about you" in choice of clothing but it really does involve impacting others innocently. it can get hot in Egypt of course and you just want to wear comfortable clothing with your skin exposed, however you can really make it awkward for honest men there as well - meaning it's the equivalent of creating the awkwardness when people really heavily make out in public. If you get what I'm saying. You can create awkwardness and discomfort for other people who are raised not seeing so much on strangers. Not a big deal it seems - until you see the awkwardness created the long-coming day you decide to wear your Old Navy trusty-dusty tank top for 10 mins before running back to change. It is about you but it can create a feeling of others feeling exposed and uncomfortable with you in their view.

I was in Egypt in 1995 for 2 weeks on business. Got to travel from Cairo to Port Said to El Arish, then to Alexandria and out past Marsa Matruh, working on equipment along the coast. I was with Egyptian workers the whole time and generally felt safe. The Egyptian engineers I was with sometimes sensed I was uneasy about some of the areas we went and laughed at me, some of them had been to the United States and were mugged - they said you don’t have to worry about that here. I think times were different then though, before a lot of the loonies started stuff. In general I ate at many local restaurants, stuck to cooked food and bottled water and was fine. I took a couple acidophilus pills a day to fortify gut. The local food in restaurants was good food. All the people I met were very polite and hospitable. Tourist spots were of course touristy with lots of people trying to sell stuff, but mostly I was working in towns and equipment sites. I hope Egypt can continue to have a positive future, they are good people and have a lot of history for visitors to enjoy.

As an Egyptian that has traveled across Egypt, the US, and Europe, I can say that this video is mostly accurate. I would just like to point out 2 things: 1) wearing normal shorts is absolutely fine (I’ve done that all my life) especially when you are touring the hot desert and relaxing in the humid sea resorts. 2) The Egyptian police is very safe and peaceful. Even though the revolution was only 11 years ago, security in Egypt (especially in the touristic sites) is so safe and the officers are very peaceful. I would also like to add a few points: Don’t worry too much about doing anything wrong or offending any cultural traditions (as long as it’s not a crime) because most Egyptians are sympathetic and understand that foreigners have very different cultures. Also, like the video states, refrain from eating just any food in the streets because it might result in food poisoning. As long as you eat in a restaurant or fast food chain that has clean food, don’t worry. I hope to anyone reading this to come to Egypt! It is really a beautiful country that has sadly been demonetized by many media sectors. Hope to see u soon!!
I did fulfill one of my bucket lists to Egypt, in September 2019 and returned just before lockdown. I can't stop thinking about Egypt my mind won't let it go
I am an American male and I have been to Egypt 21 times since 2012. For Westerners, you should bring toilet paper when you leave the hotel. The people there use water toilets to clean themselves. If you’re not used to it, bring your TP. You may see it in some places but not at other places, such as the airport. I know because I have experienced this. If you’re going to tip anyone, have the money set aside from your wallet/purse. You don’t want people to see your big bills. Try to avoid having people at tourist sites suggest angles, views to take photos. A tip will be expected. I have been scolded by Egyptian friends, both male and female, not to give money to beggars on the street, because you don’t know their real economic status. If you go to Khan El-Khalili, you BARGAIN with the seller. He,she will try to sell high especially if you are a foreigner. You can always walk away. At many tourist sites, you will pay more for tickets than the local people. Don’t complain. We can afford it. Be careful holding your cell phone, iPad, hand bag, etc in busy crowded places. Some people, especially on motorcycle, have been known to grab away cell phones - I personally know 2 Egyptian female friends who had this happen. Use common sense and keep your eyes open. Although I say all this, to me there is no other place in the world I would rather be than in Egypt. After all, I’ve been there 21 times since 2012 with plans to return. Make friends there. Egypt has very polite and nice people. I know. Take in the culture. Don’t let TV and garbage movies give you the wrong idea of Egypt. Yes, it’s a 3rd world nation and the economy has taken a toll on so many people there. Cairo is like New York. Most people will be wonderful to get to know. Try to see their world from their perspective, not yours. That could be more memorable than visiting a place. Quite a few know English. The first 2 times I went there was to see places but since then, I have gone to see people and friends, Egypt’s most wonderful treasures to me.
This is the ideal traveller, not like those who travel to egypt and expect to be catered to at every turn and scoff at the slightest inconvenience, at that point just stay in your own country.
I have been to Egypt - one of my most amazing trips. The people treated me very well as I followed their rules i.e., dressing appropriately...I met wonderful shop owners whom I communicated with. On my last day, I went to a few of the stores I had bought from...they offered me 50 percent off everything in the store. It was one of the most amazing trips I have ever taken.
I have visited Egypt 3 times (done the Nile Cruise on one of the 3 visits) and yes you have to take certain precautions especially with street vendors and beware of thieves. But generally it is a safe country to visit
Nice video and good information! As a male I feel it is safe to travel independently. I have travelled to many parts of the world and personally I feel the local in Egypt are the most friendly people I have ever met. They are very welcoming, will invite you for tea or dinner. Vendors at tourist sites however can be very pushy and aggressive trying to earn your business. Just expect that and you will be fine. Its a beautiful country and i highly recommend it!
My boyfriend and I traveled Egypt by ourselves for almost a month. I agree that a guide is very beneficial at the sites so you can get all the facts and information.....but we felt super safe walking around and traveling by ourselves! (Although it can be very tiring and chaotic, we never felt unsafe!)

I think this video exaggerates how important (and how common) it is to travel there on a tour. I've been to Egypt twice, and travelled independently with one other person, and both times had the trip of a lifetime. And both times it was obvious that many people do the same. Certainly learning about Egyptian history is a part of it, but there are books that can tell you about that. Nothing wrong with doing one-day tours to places that might be hard to get to (I've done that), but personally, I like to see the real life of the country, and that doesn't mean being bussed around from one tourist attraction to the next.
I went to Egypt 3 times as a solo female traveler and have met other solo travelers as well. Always made new friends because Egyptians are sooooooooo hospitable. If you just go on a tour, you may miss out on meeting locals. Tours are fantastic when you want to learn about the history. But when you travel solo - i.e. before or after your tour - you get to know how incredibly friendly and helpful Egyptians are. Never felt like I was going to get robbed or that my life was in danger. Ever. Now I will say, some men can be annoying, but I get that in other countries as well, even way more so, i.e. in Los Angeles. I've traveled to more than 50 countries and Egypt is in my top 3. You can wear shorts, tops, or dresses, but it depends on where you go (beach cities or New Cairo, for example).
That's so cool! I usually don't like going on tours either, but the logistics made this trip tricky and I also wanted to learn about the sites from a reputable guide. Touring solo does feel more authentic though.

A lot of these comments on the video seems to forgot this video is from a female traveller perspective and that makes travelling very differently. As a female traveller I have taken advice from male travellers and actually felt unsafe as a woman and been in danger! Would love to know what tour you went on!
Thank you! There's definitely a noticeable difference in this region for female travelers and it's best to err on the side of caution so that you feel comfortable and safe. I toured with Gate 1 which came with a local Egyptian guide and he helped advise us along the way.
I am Male travelled to Egypt sometime ago and I have treated with disgust at the airport & felt unsafe walking in alone. since my 1st trip I vowed never to travel again to Egypt

Im in Egypt right now in a 5 star hotel and I thought here I can eat everything with no worries.. guys I was wrong I’ve never been this sick be careful eat only what’s been cooked, peeled or boiled. Especially if u don’t travel often :)
Well as an egyptian you have been spot on on many advices but here are things you have misinterpreted. 1- Egypt have been always a really safe country with the exception of the period between 2011 and 2015. Cause this is what happens in revolutions, a power vacuum happens and law enforcment weakens. But thankfully we have recovered from it. now things are really safe especially for tourists, if something bad happens to a tourist national security agencies here get involved and everyone knows it. So no one will mess with tourists. Just avoid slums and ghettos like you do in any country and you will be fine. 2- just don't wear anything that is too much revealing, see through or too tight wether man or woman so you won't attract too much attention. Just wear T Shirts, pants, bermuda shorts etc.. No thighs, cleavage or tummies basically. But if you're at sea side tourist destinations it's fine to dress as you like and the locals see it as normal. 3- street sellers and scammers are a problem for both local tourists and foreigners alike unfortunately, just say thank you and keep going. 4- there are tons of content on youtube of sole travelers visiting egypt, be sure to check it out, really helpful. "Doug bernard" is one of the most accurate tourist who have captured Egypt. 5- we egyptians are loud, emotional, extroverts and are not that much keen on personal space and privacy so don't take it as being an aggressive behaviour it's just who we are. But if you're in any kind of trouble the majority of people around you will offer assistance. 6- you won't get food poisoning from local food shops or tap water. Egypt has many food choices with different price ranges. Ranging from egyptian food to lebanese to jordanian to syrian to italian to greek to sushi to chinese to thai to american just google where is the nearest shop at and call them and they will deliver it wherever you are and most shops open till 1 or even 2 am. 7- egypt is a country of great contrast, where the old meets the new, where a 5000 old building are 10 mins drive away from a 20 year old modern city housing millions, where the biggist malls in the middle east with global brands are in the same city as 1000 years old bazaar areas. Where it has niche night clubs and a buzzing night life and where mosques get filled on friday and churches gets filled on sunday. Greater Cairo is a megalopolis 100km+ diameter, some parts of it looks like new delhi, others like istanbul, other like Baghdad, other like moscow. This is what 5000 years of continuous growth in a country that boarders tgree continents looks like. Be sure to ensemble all of it.
Thanks for adding these comments! Of course you *can* come here solo and many vloggers post videos showing the illusion of them being here solo when they are really accompanied by an Egyptian driver or guide during their trip at some point. You *can* wear shorts if you want, but it will make you stand out a bit more that you will want. I stand by my position: I would not come here entirely solo, you'd be missing out on history / education and it makes your trip go much smoother with an Egyptian guide who knows the culture and way around.

As for shorts, well let me put it this way, i am 6ft 230lb mascular built, thik mustach, i will probably stand out more wearing shorts in cairo than you would. It's more acceptable for a foreigner, but ofcourse hot shorts in cairo would be asking for trouble unfortunately. Note: in the past 16 months me too movement have caught hugh traction in Egypt resulting in harsher punishment for sexual harrasment with a minimum punishment of 5 years and up to 300,000 egp ( $20,000 )
Many Egyptians are aggressive its not loud or being extroverted its being aggressive lol and the food I was even told by locals to watch out for the bad water and food in certain areas.

I am a tall white Canadian male. I was on a multi-disciplinary Archaeology dig based on Dakla oasis, then travelled alone taking local transport (bus) from Karga to Assyut, then train or bus to Luxor, where i spent 6 days in the cheapest hotel I could find, and took the local ferry to the West Bank, where I caught a local little bus. Egyptians were wonderful and sweet and helpful. Gave me advice on catching the bus and in one case, two soldiers on a crowded bus squeezed together and actually pulled me down so I had somewhere to sit! The only jerks were some pompous officials and touts selling tourist trinkets on the corniche. When they had given me a bad impression, I'd disappear into the back streets and buy toothpast or something. it was fun trying to communicate and the kiosk people loved to teach me Arabic. I also felt safer in Luxor or Cairo than in some places in NYC, Toronto (my home), parts of LA, Miami, and Philadelphia. Because I had a little Arabic (I studed my Lonely planet guidebook! easy enough) I was asked if was Israeli! I drank bottled water and didnt order salad and never got sick. I was there for the culture and the pople and the history. Sometimes I maybe paid $2.00 more than a local. Big damned deal. All Canadians & Yanks are rich compared to Egyptians and we are blessed to be able to travel there. If I was a woman, I would follow all the advice give by other commenters here. Or find an Egyptian woman to travel with.
don't be worry about saftey , as she told in this video , if we were in 2011 , you should be worried .. but now all is good .. i suppose you visit luxor and the new big eqyptian meusum , then you have to visit sharm and hurghada and enjoying the red sea 🤝❤️

Im an American woman and I take a group of people on a tour of Egypt once a year....and I've been going to Egypt since 1981. It's a fantastic place to visit! Never have we ever been in a dangerous or unsafe position! Vendors are the same anywhere ....they hawk their wares trying to get you to buy....so what ? Politely say no thanks and keep walking. No one grabs you into their store or forces you to buy and of course.....you must Bargain !! I tell my people if you don't want to bargain. ..Ill be happy to do it for you ! This is fun.....not be "be warned" in a scary hushed voice like this woman says. This is a third world country which has millions of people crammed into cities, its noisy, tons of traffic yet the people are the most friendly and hospitable and the sights to see, the Pyramids, Temples, the Nile 4 night 5 day cruise, the shopping and So Much More to see is Definitely......Definitely a must see !!!! Visiting Egypt is a Trip of a Lifetime !!!
I just got back from Egypt. Went to Cairo, Luxor and Alexandria. It's a heavy tip/tourism country so beware. They will try and upcharge you if you're American. Our guide told them we were Nigerian lol. We ate at various restaurants and were fine. I felt safe with and without the guide.
I've been to Egypt twice I never went on a tour, I watch lots of videos on Egypt not conventional nonsense I rented a bicycle in Luxor and biked to the Valley of the Kings and explored off the beaten track. We may rent a car when we go with my family.
Well be sure to tune in the next few weeks for the inauguration of restoring the luxor sphinx road in luxor, it will be as big as the mummy golden parade.
I'm an Egyptian living abroad. And I have to say that your video is really objective, informative, and empathetic. However, dress code is a bit subjective coz in other neighbourhoods it's pretty fine to wear shorts, but they aren't the typical tourist sites

I am Egyptian, would advice you now is a very good time tourists are so little in numbers so sites feel like a private tour, and things are cheep now, BTW you can travel alone with no guide oor tour, just know what you want from the trip and plan accordingly Here igf you need any clarification

Run The Atlas - Very surprised to hear the context of what you're saying. I have an Egyptian friend who took friends from the same town I live in and hosted them mainly in Cairo and Giza. They ate street food-without adverse effects and loved it. They avoided danger. They weren't ripped off. Guided by a native, they had literally the time of their lives and Egypt reportedly towered over all other holidays they'd ever had combined. I lived in Athens in 1990 for some months (business, living with host family) and found that yes, you do need at least initially Athenians to host you. That way you avoid the bad street food and eat the good. You avoid the bad areas and particularly you're not ripped off. Once I got some local guidance under my belt, I could walk solo. I DID encounter some troubles going solo, but got through them. Life is short and while foolishly courting danger is stupid, avoiding all risk is also not a good way to live. In 1990 Athens was not particularly safe for women - including Greek women, in some areas. It helps to get to know the lay of the land! Foreign visitors to say, my old hometown, El Cerrito, California (near Berkeley) if guided by me would have a wonderful time in "Greater Berkeley." But El Cerrito borders Richmond and if foreign visitors stray into the wrong areas of Richmond, I honestly feel they'll wish they were in Egypt. Inside information as provided by locals is the secret to successful travel in my opinion. All that aside - a good video I enjoyed.
Yes - we were guided by native Egyptians too so we avoided any problems on the trip. In fact all this info from our video came from our guide and our tour / hotel provided us with security while we walked through Cairo. I've been to Athens as well and yes, there's similar safety advice there as with Cairo.
They will try and rip you off and tell you just sit on a camel to take a photo of you but will try asking 400 pounds. Be careful of men or catching public transport.
As an Egyptian, I'd say think of Egypt as an adventure! It's NOT a luxurious vacation or like visiting Europe, Japan or USA where things are way more organized. Get prepared, read about it so you know about any potential risk or scam and enjoy the trip! It's a developing country with pros and cons, but really WORTH the visit. Locals also very kind, helpful and generous, but it needs some experience to determine who are locals and who are street vendors who wants your dollar! However, it's rare to find locals speak good English 😁
Great story! A few comments, having lived there. 1/ Many people tour on their own there, all the time. It is a thing. 2/ your right, don't drink the tap water. Don't drink it in Greece or anywhere else for that matter. I caught typhoid in Galilee from tap water. 3/ Street food, it is amazing! I have had food poisoning several times, all in North America, restaurant and big chain fast food. Trick when you are travelling is eat where the locals eat, if there is a lineup, it is as safe as it gets. Many places to eat amazing food in Egypt. Being on a guided tour does not help that. 4/ Best thing about self touring is you get to meet the people.
I would NOT recommend touring Cairo completely alone for the vast majority of travelers. A tour or local guide is best in Egypt as there is so much to see and learn, but also for safety and logistics reasons.
@@RunTheAtlas I completely disagree, Cairo is an amazing city and i think it is traveled best not with tour, a local friend helps, but Cairo as safe as can be. There is less crime in the city than in the west. However if you're a woman take precuations of course
try not to go with these organized trips just make your plans get to know Egyptian friends they will tell you what to do and not to do even it might be even more exciting , no one tells you what is ur schedule are + with Egyptian friend you will interact more with locals they are very friendly and won't get scammed like you see with other vloggers
Btw, yes the police will most likely keep a eye on you if your solo and they HAVE the authority to detain you if you don’t cooperate with them, if your asking why then that because of the 2013 bombing when a German kept on saying he can’t understand them so they let him go, 1 week later he bombed a bus, so yes they are friendly but you gotta try your best to cooperate with them, or just travel with a group.
😄 Always staying on our own there many Times. Bull💩 on his best. I never had any problems with police or army. I'm thankfull for thé job they do protecting thé population. Bad things happened everywhere. It is not daily life.

All safe, stayed at Airbnb mostly, Maadi as Sarayat, El Shorouk, Madinaty, Nazlet as semman, Sheikh Zayed, Shubra, 6th of October, Al Amein, Mersa Matrouh, Alexandria, Obour, El Narges, Al Rehab, Nasr City, Khan El Khalili alone😁🤣😅. Be back in 2029 March🥰with big luggage and home & car hunting. Not forgetting, the supermarkets!!! Amazing 😅love Seoudi, Carrefour, Spinneys. Cheese spread is superb! Love it. 🚗I like taking UBER and Didi only once. 💸: Easy to withdraw cash from an ATM machine. WATER: No issue at all. FOOD: 🥰Nice & cheap.

Visited Egypt in 1995 was an awesome experience. Stayed in the Sheraton Hotel overlooking the Nile. On arrival we had forgotten about changing our watches to the local time only to be called saying it was time for our night cruise on the Nile with dinner. It was a dinner with a belly dancing show and lovely music.It lasted for 3 hours which started with the sun setting which was amazing. Visited all the museums and sites. The pyramids were phenomenal especially the night experience with all the lighting reflecting the wonders of these huge pyramids. The classical music that came forth made it more spectacular. The only thing I wasn't used to how people rode in the roads,as it wasn't wide but if you could squeeze yourself in you just went through. Soldiers with rifles at the corners of some streets were a bit scary for me but we chose not to go that side again. The heat was a bit too much in the museum as there was no air conditioning only little fans on chairs. Our stay was only 4 days and we had to cramp in as much as possible. Having a good tour guide was just great,she was very nice and spoke fluent English. I will always treasure my visit in Egypt. 👍👍👏
Don't eat salads. Even on Nile cruises from top tour companies. I also ate at a well known local restaurant on my own near Tahir Square. Had a pizza from the Domino's next to the 4 Seasons in Cairo. Don't know what the culprit was but I was on the Royal Throne at the Cairo International Airport for hours before my return flight home back to NYC. It didn't end there as I was in the lavatory much of time on the plane. I would say a good 75% of our tour group had problems over the time in Egypt. I love middle eastern food so much that I couldn't resist the buffet spread on the Nile cruise. When on land we ate at the hotel restaurants or a restaurant the tour operator took us to. I know that it got so bad for some of the people in the group that they couldn't make the excursions. Imagine spending all that money and not being able to go to the Valley of The Kings into King Tut's tomb. You have to understand that almost all the food items you eat are exposed to water. The chicken and steers graze or consume feed that is exposed to water or already have microorganisms in their systems that our bodies can't handle. The Egyptian people hereditary being here for thousands and thousands of year build up an immunity to eColi or other intestinal viruses. I visited Egypt around 2009. I doubt things are much different with water and food preparation in 13 years. I intend to return to see the new Grand Museum at the Pyramids in a year or two after it opens. The country is still amazing and it was one of my favorite trips I have been on anywhere in the world.
One word word about safety: Walking during the night in Aswan or Luxor felt 10 times safer than e.g. in Chicago. I've been to Egypt almost every year and got the expression that the Egyptian are more afraid about your safety then we are. Never have I felt physically threatened. Biggest safety issue is traffic, so be careful. On the other other hand vendors are often times desperate and very pushy, so remain strong but don't be unpolite.

I've travelled solo alot to many countries even Kenya Thailand and India and felt very safe everywhere. Next trip after Covid is definitely Egypt. People are people. You just need to understand that. And enjoy 😉😊

You can wear whatever you want in Egypt. Some people may look and catcall, depending on what neighborhood you're in but you can absolutely wear whatever you please. I don't understand where do you all get this information from.

The same is true for most countries but they're not stereotyped by it. People make it seem like it's illegal when in fact it's just annoyance. They have nude beaches, doesn't that contradict someone saying "you shouldn't wear revealing clothes" without adding where and when you shouldn't. Even that would be weird because some women might enjoy the attention and it's their right to do so.

My most important advice is make friends with young friendly locals. Money or not, they'll make you feel welcome.

We loved Egypt but found the street sellers as absolute pain in the neck. They were very pushy, persistent and some were openly aggressive. We appreciate that they need to make money but they almost ruined our holiday. We will not be returning 😕😥😨
Learn some basic arabic for gods sake and ask them politely to leave you alone worked 99% for me....in the remaining 1% i had to raise my voice some more. Positives outweigh the negatives by far, those negatives arent many as long as you use some common sense.
I was just in Cairo for one week and as a guy I can say it was totally safe. Egyptians are some of the friendliest and most welcoming people of any country I have visited. I was traveling alone and never once felt unsafe..I met some very interesting people by just being open and friendly myself....
People really should educated themselves. Eygpt was NOT the most advanced..The Vedic culture is much more ancient and advanced. In fact Eygpt was remnants of that vedic knowledge from the past..
I`m not sure how to take your advice about safety and precautions, I`ve been to Egypt more than twice, last time was April 2022, and that was as a solo black woman traveling alone. I think Egypt is safer than other countries I`ve visited, having said that, I do not stay in guest houses, hostels or Airbnb, I stay in hotels,but I do the traveling alone with only the driver I hire. In my opinion, the real issue in Egypt are the hawkers/sellers or whatever they call themselves, they are relentless and just too many of them,on the streets of Egypt, you can not have a minute`s peace without someone trying to sell you somethign. Will I advice anyone to travely to Egypt? absolutely, as said, my last time there was just months ago, I`ve never had any negative experience there even though I'm a black woman traveling solo, not speaking a single word Arabic and stuff like that

Travel tip: Giza is a hell hole. A travelers nightmare, traffic that is unlike any in the world. You will be exploited the moment you land. Take a tour if going to Giza.. though my wife and two small babies did not use one as we are avid travelers with experience. You will be lied to non stop all the way up to the pyramids and elsewhere, such as, “no strollers allowed in the pyramid area” 😂 there is garbage, broken glass, wild cats and dogs.. broken sidewalks, no crosswalks. HUGE TIP: Only use Uber!!! It’s super cheap and local Egyptian Uber drivers are great!

How exciting! The Egypt / Jordan combo is a great idea. You should be fine with some lightweight drawstring pants, I’d recommend two pairs. You can buy a pair there at the markets too if you didn’t bring enough. At the hotel/ resort you can wear whatever ie. shorts, but in the streets of Cairo, streetmarkets, and churches/ mosques you’ll need something that covers up more.
I completely disagree about needing a tour. Egypt could appear scary if you haven't traveled abroad. If you have, and you use common sense a solo female can do Egypt. Luxor and Aswan are extremely safe. Some areas are not. Just research before you go and hire private guides for the day if needed. Tours are expensive and you are stuck with a group. Not my cup of tea, but everyone is different.
Yes, by tour I meant either a group or private guide but I definitely think it's essential to have a professional guide to show you these sites. Agree that the group tours are not for everyone.
As far as safety anywhere in the world, I have felt the safest in Japan. That being said, most other countries I don't think it is wise to be alone as a woman.
That is kind of the problem with a large amount of travel vloggers, they tend to omit the fact that most countries are at best sketchy especially as a female traveler, even more so alone and make it seem like nothing bad could happen. It's wisest to when you go to a country outside of the North America, Europe and East Asia especially when that country is know for its bad treatment of women to get a local guide, preferably a friend or to at least take a male be it a friend, husband, boyfriend, father, uncle whatever for your own safety.

I have an advice for every woman who wants to go to Egypt (I am Egyptian). You should not wear tight clothes that highlight the body or open clothes in public places. You should also go with an Egyptian guide because sellers exploit foreigners and take advantage of the difference in conversion from Egyptian pounds to dollars and sell at prices Expensive, and I want to say that Egypt has 28 governorates, and in each of them there are tourist attractions, beautiful landscapes, and wonderful beaches. other than that foreign women wearing loose, shawl clothing nothing too tight, or revealing seems to suffice - ON A GROUP TOUR.
One thinks "it's all about you" in choice of clothing but it really does involve impacting others innocently. it can get hot in Egypt of course and you just want to wear comfortable clothing with your skin exposed, however you can really make it awkward for honest men there as well - meaning it's the equivalent of creating the awkwardness when people really heavily make out in public. If you get what I'm saying. You can create awkwardness and discomfort for other people who are raised not seeing so much on strangers. Not a big deal it seems - until you see the awkwardness created the long-coming day you decide to wear your Old Navy trusty-dusty tank top for 10 mins before running back to change. It is about you but it can create a feeling of others feeling exposed and uncomfortable with you in their view.

I was in Egypt in 1995 for 2 weeks on business. Got to travel from Cairo to Port Said to El Arish, then to Alexandria and out past Marsa Matruh, working on equipment along the coast. I was with Egyptian workers the whole time and generally felt safe. The Egyptian engineers I was with sometimes sensed I was uneasy about some of the areas we went and laughed at me, some of them had been to the United States and were mugged - they said you don’t have to worry about that here. I think times were different then though, before a lot of the loonies started stuff. In general I ate at many local restaurants, stuck to cooked food and bottled water and was fine. I took a couple acidophilus pills a day to fortify gut. The local food in restaurants was good food. All the people I met were very polite and hospitable. Tourist spots were of course touristy with lots of people trying to sell stuff, but mostly I was working in towns and equipment sites. I hope Egypt can continue to have a positive future, they are good people and have a lot of history for visitors to enjoy.

As an Egyptian that has traveled across Egypt, the US, and Europe, I can say that this video is mostly accurate. I would just like to point out 2 things: 1) wearing normal shorts is absolutely fine (I’ve done that all my life) especially when you are touring the hot desert and relaxing in the humid sea resorts. 2) The Egyptian police is very safe and peaceful. Even though the revolution was only 11 years ago, security in Egypt (especially in the touristic sites) is so safe and the officers are very peaceful.
I would also like to add a few points: Don’t worry too much about doing anything wrong or offending any cultural traditions (as long as it’s not a crime) because most Egyptians are sympathetic and understand that foreigners have very different cultures. Also, like the video states, refrain from eating just any food in the streets because it might result in food poisoning. As long as you eat in a restaurant or fast food chain that has clean food, don’t worry.
I hope to anyone reading this to come to Egypt! It is really a beautiful country that has sadly been demonetized by many media sectors. Hope to see u soon!!

I am an American male and I have been to Egypt 21 times since 2012. For Westerners, you should bring toilet paper when you leave the hotel. The people there use water toilets to clean themselves. If you’re not used to it, bring your TP. You may see it in some places but not at other places, such as the airport. I know because I have experienced this. If you’re going to tip anyone, have the money set aside from your wallet/purse. You don’t want people to see your big bills. Try to avoid having people at tourist sites suggest angles, views to take photos. A tip will be expected. I have been scolded by Egyptian friends, both male and female, not to give money to beggars on the street, because you don’t know their real economic status. If you go to Khan El-Khalili, you BARGAIN with the seller. He,she will try to sell high especially if you are a foreigner. You can always walk away. At many tourist sites, you will pay more for tickets than the local people. Don’t complain. We can afford it. Be careful holding your cell phone, iPad, hand bag, etc in busy crowded places. Some people, especially on motorcycle, have been known to grab away cell phones - I personally know 2 Egyptian female friends who had this happen. Use common sense and keep your eyes open. Although I say all this, to me there is no other place in the world I would rather be than in Egypt. After all, I’ve been there 21 times since 2012 with plans to return. Make friends there. Egypt has very polite and nice people. I know. Take in the culture. Don’t let TV and garbage movies give you the wrong idea of Egypt. Yes, it’s a 3rd world nation and the economy has taken a toll on so many people there. Cairo is like New York. Most people will be wonderful to get to know. Try to see their world from their perspective, not yours. That could be more memorable than visiting a place. Quite a few know English. The first 2 times I went there was to see places but since then, I have gone to see people and friends, Egypt’s most wonderful treasures to me.

I have been to Egypt - one of my most amazing trips. The people treated me very well as I followed their rules i.e., dressing appropriately...I met wonderful shop owners whom I communicated with. On my last day, I went to a few of the stores I had bought from...they offered me 50 percent off everything in the store. It was one of the most amazing trips I have ever taken.

I have visited Egypt 3 times (done the Nile Cruise on one of the 3 visits) and yes you have to take certain precautions especially with street vendors and beware of thieves. But generally it is a safe country to visit

Nice video and good information! As a male I feel it is safe to travel independently. I have travelled to many parts of the world and personally I feel the local in Egypt are the most friendly people I have ever met. They are very welcoming, will invite you for tea or dinner. Vendors at tourist sites however can be very pushy and aggressive trying to earn your business. Just expect that and you will be fine. Its a beautiful country and i highly recommend it!

My boyfriend and I traveled Egypt by ourselves for almost a month. I agree that a guide is very beneficial at the sites so you can get all the facts and information.....but we felt super safe walking around and traveling by ourselves! (Although it can be very tiring and chaotic, we never felt unsafe!)

I think this video exaggerates how important (and how common) it is to travel there on a tour. I've been to Egypt twice, and travelled independently with one other person, and both times had the trip of a lifetime. And both times it was obvious that many people do the same. Certainly learning about Egyptian history is a part of it, but there are books that can tell you about that. Nothing wrong with doing one-day tours to places that might be hard to get to (I've done that), but personally, I like to see the real life of the country, and that doesn't mean being bussed around from one tourist attraction to the next.

I went to Egypt 3 times as a solo female traveler and have met other solo travelers as well. Always made new friends because Egyptians are sooooooooo hospitable. If you just go on a tour, you may miss out on meeting locals. Tours are fantastic when you want to learn about the history. But when you travel solo - i.e. before or after your tour - you get to know how incredibly friendly and helpful Egyptians are. Never felt like I was going to get robbed or that my life was in danger. Ever. Now I will say, some men can be annoying, but I get that in other countries as well, even way more so, i.e. in Los Angeles. I've traveled to more than 50 countries and Egypt is in my top 3. You can wear shorts, tops, or dresses, but it depends on where you go (beach cities or New Cairo, for example).
That's so cool! I usually don't like going on tours either, but the logistics made this trip tricky and I also wanted to learn about the sites from a reputable guide. Touring solo does feel more authentic though.

A lot of these comments on the video seems to forgot this video is from a female traveller perspective and that makes travelling very differently. As a female traveller I have taken advice from male travellers and actually felt unsafe as a woman and been in danger! Would love to know what tour you went on!
Thank you! There's definitely a noticeable difference in this region for female travelers and it's best to err on the side of caution so that you feel comfortable and safe. I toured with Gate 1 which came with a local Egyptian guide and he helped advise us along the way.
I am Male travelled to Egypt sometime ago and I have treated with disgust at the airport & felt unsafe walking in alone. since my 1st trip I vowed never to travel again to Egypt

Well as an egyptian you have been spot on on many advices but here are things you have misinterpreted.
1- Egypt have been always a really safe country with the exception of the period between 2011 and 2015. Cause this is what happens in revolutions, a power vacuum happens and law enforcment weakens. But thankfully we have recovered from it.
now things are really safe especially for tourists, if something bad happens to a tourist national security agencies here get involved and everyone knows it. So no one will mess with tourists.
Just avoid slums and ghettos like you do in any country and you will be fine.
2- just don't wear anything that is too much revealing, see through or too tight wether man or woman so you won't attract too much attention.
Just wear T Shirts, pants, bermuda shorts etc..
No thighs, cleavage or tummies basically.
But if you're at sea side tourist destinations it's fine to dress as you like and the locals see it as normal.
3- street sellers and scammers are a problem for both local tourists and foreigners alike unfortunately, just say thank you and keep going.
4- there are tons of content on youtube of sole travelers visiting egypt, be sure to check it out, really helpful. "Doug bernard" is one of the most accurate tourist who have captured Egypt.
5- we egyptians are loud, emotional, extroverts and are not that much keen on personal space and privacy so don't take it as being an aggressive behaviour it's just who we are. But if you're in any kind of trouble the majority of people around you will offer assistance.
6- you won't get food poisoning from local food shops or tap water. Egypt has many food choices with different price ranges. Ranging from egyptian food to lebanese to jordanian to syrian to italian to greek to sushi to chinese to thai to american just google where is the nearest shop at and call them and they will deliver it wherever you are and most shops open till 1 or even 2 am.
7- egypt is a country of great contrast, where the old meets the new, where a 5000 old building are 10 mins drive away from a 20 year old modern city housing millions, where the biggist malls in the middle east with global brands are in the same city as 1000 years old bazaar areas. Where it has niche night clubs and a buzzing night life and where mosques get filled on friday and churches gets filled on sunday.
Greater Cairo is a megalopolis 100km+ diameter, some parts of it looks like new delhi, others like istanbul, other like Baghdad, other like moscow.
This is what 5000 years of continuous growth in a country that boarders tgree continents looks like. Be sure to ensemble all of it.

Of course you *can* come here solo and many vloggers post videos showing the illusion of them being here solo when they are really accompanied by an Egyptian driver or guide during their trip at some point. You *can* wear shorts if you want, but it will make you stand out a bit more that you will want. I stand by my position: I would not come here entirely solo, you'd be missing out on history / education and it makes your trip go much smoother with an Egyptian guide who knows the culture and way around.

As for shorts, well let me put it this way, i am 6ft 230lb mascular built, thik mustach, i will probably stand out more wearing shorts in cairo than you would. It's more acceptable for a foreigner, but ofcourse hot shorts in cairo would be asking for trouble unfortunately.
Note: in the past 16 months me too movement have caught hugh traction in Egypt resulting in harsher punishment for sexual harrasment with a minimum punishment of 5 years and up to 300,000 egp ( $20,000 )

I was on a multi-disciplinary Archaeology dig based on Dakla oasis, then travelled alone taking local transport (bus) from Karga to Assyut, then train or bus to Luxor, where i spent 6 days in the cheapest hotel I could find, and took the local ferry to the West Bank, where I caught a local little bus. Egyptians were wonderful and sweet and helpful. Gave me advice on catching the bus and in one case, two soldiers on a crowded bus squeezed together and actually pulled me down so I had somewhere to sit! The only jerks were some pompous officials and touts selling tourist trinkets on the corniche. When they had given me a bad impression, I'd disappear into the back streets and buy toothpast or something. it was fun trying to communicate and the kiosk people loved to teach me Arabic. I also felt safer in Luxor or Cairo than in some places in NYC, Toronto (my home), parts of LA, Miami, and Philadelphia. Because I had a little Arabic (I studed my Lonely planet guidebook! easy enough) I was asked if was Israeli! I drank bottled water and didnt order salad and never got sick. I was there for the culture and the pople and the history. Sometimes I maybe paid $2.00 more than a local. Big damned deal. All Canadians & Yanks are rich compared to Egyptians and we are blessed to be able to travel there. If I was a woman, I would follow all the advice give by other commenters here. Or find an Egyptian woman to travel with.

Never have we ever been in a dangerous or unsafe position! Vendors are the same anywhere ....they hawk their wares trying to get you to buy....so what ? Politely say no thanks and keep walking. No one grabs you into their store or forces you to buy and of course.....you must Bargain !!

I just got back from Egypt. Went to Cairo, Luxor and Alexandria. It's a heavy tip/tourism country so beware. They will try and upcharge you if you're American. Our guide told them we were Nigerian lol. We ate at various restaurants and were fine. I felt safe with and without the guide.
True - tipping and small bills come in handy especially when using the restrooms!

I've been to Egypt twice I never went on a tour, I watch lots of videos on Egypt not conventional nonsense I rented a bicycle in Luxor and biked to the Valley of the Kings and explored off the beaten track. We may rent a car when we go with my family.

I'm an Egyptian living abroad. And I have to say that your video is really objective, informative, and empathetic. However, dress code is a bit subjective coz in other neighbourhoods it's pretty fine to wear shorts, but they aren't the typical tourist sites

I have an Egyptian friend who took friends from the same town I live in and hosted them mainly in Cairo and Giza. They ate street food-without adverse effects and loved it. They avoided danger. They weren't ripped off. Guided by a native, they had literally the time of their lives and Egypt reportedly towered over all other holidays they'd ever had combined.
I lived in Athens in 1990 for some months (business, living with host family) and found that yes, you do need at least initially Athenians to host you. That way you avoid the bad street food and eat the good. You avoid the bad areas and particularly you're not ripped off.
Once I got some local guidance under my belt, I could walk solo. I DID encounter some troubles going solo, but got through them. Life is short and while foolishly courting danger is stupid, avoiding all risk is also not a good way to live.
In 1990 Athens was not particularly safe for women - including Greek women, in some areas.
It helps to get to know the lay of the land! Foreign visitors to say, my old hometown, El Cerrito, California (near Berkeley) if guided by me would have a wonderful time in "Greater Berkeley." But El Cerrito borders Richmond and if foreign visitors stray into the wrong areas of Richmond, I honestly feel they'll wish they were in Egypt.
Inside information as provided by locals is the secret to successful travel in my opinion.
All that aside - a good video I enjoyed.
Yes - we were guided by native Egyptians too so we avoided any problems on the trip. In fact all this info from our video came from our guide and our tour / hotel provided us with security while we walked through Cairo. I've been to Athens as well and yes, there's similar safety advice there as with Cairo.

As an Egyptian, I'd say think of Egypt as an adventure! It's NOT a luxurious vacation or like visiting Europe, Japan or USA where things are way more organized. Get prepared, read about it so you know about any potential risk or scam and enjoy the trip! It's a developing country with pros and cons, but really WORTH the visit. Locals also very kind, helpful and generous, but it needs some experience to determine who are locals and who are street vendors who wants your dollar! However, it's rare to find locals speak good English 😁

Great story! A few comments, having lived there.
1/ Many people tour on their own there, all the time. It is a thing.
2/ your right, don't drink the tap water. Don't drink it in Greece or anywhere else for that matter. I caught typhoid in Galilee from tap water.
3/ Street food, it is amazing! I have had food poisoning several times, all in North America, restaurant and big chain fast food. Trick when you are travelling is eat where the locals eat, if there is a lineup, it is as safe as it gets. Many places to eat amazing food in Egypt. Being on a guided tour does not help that.
4/ Best thing about self touring is you get to meet the people.
I would NOT recommend touring Cairo completely alone for the vast majority of travelers. A tour or local guide is best in Egypt as there is so much to see and learn, but also for safety and logistics reasons.
@@RunTheAtlas I completely disagree, Cairo is an amazing city and i think it is traveled best not with tour, a local friend helps, but Cairo as safe as can be. There is less crime in the city than in the west. However if you're a woman take precuations of course

try not to go with these organized trips just make your plans get to know Egyptian friends they will tell you what to do and not to do even it might be even more exciting , no one tells you what is ur schedule are + with Egyptian friend you will interact more with locals they are very friendly and won't get scammed like you see with other vloggers

Btw, yes the police will most likely keep a eye on you if your solo and they HAVE the authority to detain you if you don’t cooperate with them, if your asking why then that because of the 2013 bombing when a German kept on saying he can’t understand them so they let him go, 1 week later he bombed a bus, so yes they are friendly but you gotta try your best to cooperate with them, or just travel with a group.
😄 Always staying on our own there many Times. Bull💩 on his best. I never had any problems with police or army. I'm thankfull for thé job they do protecting thé population. Bad things happened everywhere. It is not daily life.

Be back in 2029 March🥰with big luggage and home & car hunting. Not forgetting, the supermarkets!!! Amazing 😅love Seoudi, Carrefour, Spinneys. Cheese spread is superb! Love it. 🚗I like taking UBER and Didi only once. 💸: Easy to withdraw cash from an ATM machine. WATER: No issue at all. FOOD: 🥰Nice & cheap.

Yep it's a shame me as a black man in America can't afford to take a trip to learn more about myself, we been here for centuries and I only observe others visiting Africa mostly.
Visited Egypt in 1995 was an awesome experience. Stayed in the Sheraton Hotel overlooking the Nile. On arrival we had forgotten about changing our watches to the local time only to be called saying it was time for our night cruise on the Nile with dinner. It was a dinner with a belly dancing show and lovely music.It lasted for 3 hours which started with the sun setting which was amazing. Visited all the museums and sites. The pyramids were phenomenal especially the night experience with all the lighting reflecting the wonders of these huge pyramids. The classical music that came forth made it more spectacular. The only thing I wasn't used to how people rode in the roads,as it wasn't wide but if you could squeeze yourself in you just went through. Soldiers with rifles at the corners of some streets were a bit scary for me but we chose not to go that side again. The heat was a bit too much in the museum as there was no air conditioning only little fans on chairs. Our stay was only 4 days and we had to cramp in as much as possible. Having a good tour guide was just great,she was very nice and spoke fluent English. I will always treasure my visit in Egypt. 👍👍👏
Don't eat salads. Even on Nile cruises from top tour companies. I also ate at a well known local restaurant on my own near Tahir Square. Had a pizza from the Domino's next to the 4 Seasons in Cairo. Don't know what the culprit was but I was on the Royal Throne at the Cairo International Airport for hours before my return flight home back to NYC. It didn't end there as I was in the lavatory much of time on the plane. I would say a good 75% of our tour group had problems over the time in Egypt. I love middle eastern food so much that I couldn't resist the buffet spread on the Nile cruise. When on land we ate at the hotel restaurants or a restaurant the tour operator took us to. I know that it got so bad for some of the people in the group that they couldn't make the excursions. Imagine spending all that money and not being able to go to the Valley of The Kings into King Tut's tomb. You have to understand that almost all the food items you eat are exposed to water. The chicken and steers graze or consume feed that is exposed to water or already have microorganisms in their systems that our bodies can't handle. The Egyptian people hereditary being here for thousands and thousands of year build up an immunity to eColi or other intestinal viruses. I visited Egypt around 2009. I doubt things are much different with water and food preparation in 13 years. I intend to return to see the new Grand Museum at the Pyramids in a year or two after it opens. The country is still amazing and it was one of my favorite trips I have been on anywhere in the world.

One word word about safety: Walking during the night in Aswan or Luxor felt 10 times safer than e.g. in Chicago. I've been to Egypt almost every year and got the expression that the Egyptian are more afraid about your safety then we are. Never have I felt physically threatened. Biggest safety issue is traffic, so be careful. On the other other hand vendors are often times desperate and very pushy, so remain strong but don't be unpolite.
Agree Aswan and Luxor were fine and we walked around solo even at night and there were tons of local families out and it's very tourist friendly.

Learn some basic arabic for gods sake and ask them politely to leave you alone worked 99% for me....in the remaining 1% i had to raise my voice some more. Positives outweigh the negatives by far, those negatives arent many as long as you use some common sense.

I was just in Cairo for one week and as a guy I can say it was totally safe. Egyptians are some of the friendliest and most welcoming people of any country I have visited. I was traveling alone and never once felt unsafe..I met some very interesting people by just being open and friendly myself....

I`m not sure how to take your advice about safety and precautions, I`ve been to Egypt more than twice, last time was April 2022, and that was as a solo black woman traveling alone.
I think Egypt is safer than other countries I`ve visited, having said that, I do not stay in guest houses, hostels or Airbnb, I stay in hotels,but I do the traveling alone with only the driver I hire.
In my opinion, the real issue in Egypt are the hawkers/sellers or whatever they call themselves, they are relentless and just too many of them,on the streets of Egypt, you can not have a minute`s peace without someone trying to sell you somethign.
Will I advice anyone to travely to Egypt? absolutely, as said, my last time there was just months ago, I`ve never had any negative experience there even though I'm a black woman traveling solo, not speaking a single word Arabic and stuff like that

Travel tip: Giza is a hell hole. A travelers nightmare, traffic that is unlike any in the world. You will be exploited the moment you land. Take a tour if going to Giza.. though my wife and two small babies did not use one as we are avid travelers with experience. You will be lied to non stop all the way up to the pyramids and elsewhere, such as, “no strollers allowed in the pyramid area” 😂 there is garbage, broken glass, wild cats and dogs.. broken sidewalks, no crosswalks. HUGE TIP: Only use Uber!!! It’s super cheap and local Egyptian Uber drivers are great!

LOVED YOUR VIDEO!! THANK YOU!! Getting ready to leave for a 3 week guided tour of Egypt and a side jaunt to Jordan to see The Dead Sea. I am concerned about the heat and as a woman, what to wear. No shorts? I have a thin pair of black cotton drawstring pants and 2 long sleeve linen shirts to put over my sundresses. Should I get a pair of white drawstring pants too?
How exciting! The Egypt / Jordan combo is a great idea. You should be fine with some lightweight drawstring pants, I’d recommend two pairs. You can buy a pair there at the markets too if you didn’t bring enough. At the hotel/ resort you can wear whatever ie. shorts, but in the streets of Cairo, streetmarkets, and churches/ mosques you’ll need something that covers up more.

I completely disagree about needing a tour. Egypt could appear scary if you haven't traveled abroad. If you have, and you use common sense a solo female can do Egypt. Luxor and Aswan are extremely safe. Some areas are not. Just research before you go and hire private guides for the day if needed. Tours are expensive and you are stuck with a group. Not my cup of tea, but everyone is different.
Yes, by tour I meant either a group or private guide but I definitely think it's essential to have a professional guide to show you these sites. Agree that the group tours are not for everyone.
I traveled alone and by researching before I left ...everything was fine. You don't need any stupid tour group!

As far as safety anywhere in the world, I have felt the safest in Japan. That being said, most other countries I don't think it is wise to be alone as a woman.
Agree Japan is very safe! Love visiting there.
That is kind of the problem with a large amount of travel vloggers, they tend to omit the fact that most countries are at best sketchy especially as a female traveler, even more so alone and make it seem like nothing bad could happen.
It's wisest to when you go to a country outside of the North America, Europe and East Asia especially when that country is know for its bad treatment of women to get a local guide, preferably a friend or to at least take a male be it a friend, husband, boyfriend, father, uncle whatever for your own safety.

except for the clothes, egypt expectations are similar to the dominican republic, something i am used to. i think everyone should show respect though.

The purpose of travelling is to experience the world and you seem to be over cautious but let me remind you Egypt is safest country in the world and will always be that way until the end of the world according to Quran. Egypt is mystery place till today. Finally Egypt is the mother of all civilisations

What's wrong with being over cautious in a place you've never been to before? Your Quran is not really peaceful though especially about Christians, Jews and Al Mushrikun. Egypt is NOT the safest place in the world. Far from it. Foreign women get cat called and ripped off all the time. If you do not dress conservatively, you risk your safety. Is that what you called "safest" country in the world? 😂
Very naive attitude. Nothing wrong with being prepared for the worst, but hoping for the best.
