  • The Class EF66 (EF66形) is a six-axle, three-bogied (Bo′Bo′Bo′) DC electric locomotive designed for fast freight used by Japanese National Railways (JNR) and later operated by its descendants JR West and JR Freight.
EF66-27 is the only EF66 that is still in service in its original 0 series form, which was introduced in 1968.
The EF66-27 was built by Kawasaki Heavy Industries in 1973.
The number 27 has somehow earned her the nickname "Nina", and with daily sightings and photo reports on social media, there is hardly a day that goes by when you can't see her in action.
The Nina has a very distinctive appearance. When viewed from the front, the body is pointed from left to right and towards the centre, with the driver's seat window sloping down like the Shinkansen 0 series, and the box containing the left and right headlights protruding out to create an accent. The sides of the car extend vertically from the bottom and fold inwards from the height of the driver's window to the roof. The overall effect is one of speed.
By the way, there is another locomotive in Spain which is similar to EF66-27, RENFE Class 251 is based on EF66 and only 251-004 has been in service since 1983 with the same paint scheme as in Japan.

Geez that shunter is the flag master. I reverse heavy vehicles as a job and watching how this guy signals with the flags is an absolute pleasure. Excellent video too: easy to forget JNR isn't just hayabusa rushing around pretending to be busy.

This is the only body of the old series (No.1-No.55) of FE66 electric locomotives that have been running for almost half a century, that are still in operation, and this car is also likely to be retired in the near future. Therefore, it's getting a lot of attention from railroad fans.

There is an interesting combination of English,American, and purely Japanese train handling,as the flagging is straight out of an English railway employees rulebook! As an aside,so is the signaling, with, again Japanese variations! The couplers are straight American derived,as is the air brake system! Also,if you haven't spotted it,so are the trucks, under the freight and passenger equipment! By any standards,a most interesting and fascinating railway operation 🤔! Now,if JR management is smart they'll give old 27,an honorable retirement,as its the last of the Mohicans, and deserving of those 🎖honors! And it's a really beautiful design,on top of it,worthy of keeping! Thank you for your attention and time! 🚂🚂🚂🚂🚂😇😇😇😇😇🚆🚆🚆🚆🚆🚇🚇🚇🚇🚇

I'm actually surprised that JNR Class EF66 27 is still operational now. They should have retired this locomotive years ago.
