Whether we, or Alan himself realized; his style was perfectly curated for the cause that is Devo. It's Devolved. He uses toms in a way that sound primal, and driving. Then there's a sprinkling of articulate, rigid tempo with "progressive" variants and deviations. It's "basic", yet it's futuristic. He was spot on, like him or not. This guy in the video pretty much nailed it.
A lot of drummers love to play a basic 4/4 beat over this song instead of playing the little hi hat pattern that Alan layed down on it, it just sounds so much better with the Alan style hihats
@@dcb1138 untrue. a flam is where you use both hands to hot a drum with one hand coming down slightly before the other. usually on the same drum but can be different drums.. so basically 1 hit with both hands slightly off of each other..
These were the last subtitles on the DEVO Whip it! Video. I do agree with David Bowie that the first two albums by DEVO are their best. The band needed Alan so badly. May he rest in eternal power with the best of the heartbeat of the best of us forever. Thank you for making this video.
BRILLIANT. If anything, you really show how robotic Alan’s drumming was. It sounds simple, but it was very complex and not easy at all to play. In fact, everyone who does a cover of Alan’s chops on “Whip It” plays it wrong.
Excellent tribute to Alan the legend. You nailed it. The Duty album is my fave just ahead of 3 of the first 4. I love the guitars and those songs were built by Alan too. I think his drumming lines in Wiggly World are brilliant and thats just one. Would like to know what you think of that example thanks.
Great job. Nice to see some attention brought to Alan Myers. The man was like a human metronome. As great as Mark and Gerald, the focus on them as the frontmen has, at times, sadly cast the other members into relative obscurity.
If you happen to have the isolated audio of your drum cover, I would happily love to cover the rest of the instruments some time! (Given a free afternoon of not university stuff...Gah.)
@@danieltothemax8086 Since your comment reminded me of this, this video would be a good reference for a virtual drum track if I ever whip up something proper. I did have an instrumental cover *started*, I just kinda forgot about it. XD
Good job. Too bad some of Devo's post-Alan drummers don't try a little harder to emulate his style. Some of the songs suffer from an overly "rock" approach now.

I agree. Where Alan put the notes is what makes it cool!
Alan was an unrecognized genius
it's actually 2 snare hits, so someone will have to make an accurate video
@@ab8817 FYI that's called a "flam" in drummer speak.

As a fellow drummer and Devo fanatic, I say very well done.
Thanks mike!
GAWD ALAN MYERS WAS A MACHINE!!! well done spud
thanks!
The only thing missing is wearing the helmet which is eventually taken off in the transition between the two songs in the way Alan used to do
That was fantastic! It’s a brave man who tries to emulate the human metronome Alan Myers but you did a great job
Wow thank you!
Oh that Alan!

@@markadams8041 I didn’t even know he was sick!
Nice! Alan definitely had some endurance!
This must be applauded.
Thanks!
Kapo Kapo... Greetings from Chile 2021
Hell-to-the-yeah! I was trippin on the snare head (your snare tortilla thing 😆). Go Spud go!🤘🏼

Thanks! Alan is my biggest drumming influence and I agree with everything you said. Cheers!
Looks like Mark...drums like Alan. Well done!
Lol thanks
You are clearly a spud boy. Well done.
High praise!
That was amazing! Alan would be proud.
D-e-v-o

Devo, members living and gone, would approve of this, perfect!
Good job, Spud Boy.
That was awesome!!! I LOVE DEVO and this was spot on! Will watch many times more!
Extremely accurate! Well played!!
dropped a like, subscribed and bowed down in awe. You are a hero!
THANKS!!!
I’d like to see more covers! This is great.

thanks! i've always really like alan's parts. Wiggly world is great, i agree. Duty now is my favorite also. Cheers!
Brilliant mate 👍😊🇬🇧 cheers
Excellent stuff spud! Great to see and hear! - love the simple opening pattern and the Mr DNA speedy hi-hat, impressive! More Devo please...
This is so helpful thank u! Im learning devo songs bc i want to be a timing machine like alan. Its the most fun ive ever had
I’m glad to hear it! I gotta do some more devo covers soon :) good luck!
Holy Humanoiid! that was F’ing amazing!! WOW!!!
Awesome!
Love this song and hokey smoke! I never realized the drumstick hits worked that way. Very nicely done all away around! From a guitarist :)
I'm really enjoying your DEVO covers, nice to be able to play along on the guitar. Thanks Dude!
Thanks!
That was really cool. Thanks so much for sharing!
Great job! I love Alan's style. Thanks for sharing.
This cover. A true accomplishment. Bravo, sir.
Thank you!
Brilliant.
Nice job, great song. Love the paintings behind you. ✌️
Thanks! I did them a long time ago!

Kinda how it goes being a drummer in most bands. Cheers!
That was kick ass! Well done to a great song!
WoW excellent !!!!
Awesome skills and nice sound. I support your effort! 🔥🔥🔥
Nice job. Alan was a beast on those records.
That made me happy. Nice!!
Cheers!
You got it -the Human metronome.
Really good!
Sound from 70's congratulations
Muchas gracias Pablo
Amazing.
That was prefect. I enjoyed every minute of it and you nailed it. Awesome job, my man. Loved it.
Ya nailed it Spud! Ya done yourself proud. Thank you. :)
Man, thanks!
Very well done!

Espectaculaaar
awesome job fellow spud!
Devo has some of the most impressive drum works around and u pulled it off great, wouldn't mind a cover of going under
Muy bueno 👌 👍 👏
Muchas gracias a ti!
Excellent!! What’s the deal with your snare head?!
it has a big fat snare drum tortilla on it
wow! this is good! great! grand! :)
Damn, you have fantastic meter! This song is so easy to rush.
I’m surprised there isn’t any Drum covers of this song on RUclips
there's this one ^^^
Harder than it looks ... enjoyed muchly :)
I’m afraid nobody around here understands my potato

Xlnt! One those songs that sounds like it might be pretty easy to play but is definitely a bit more challenging then it let's on.....very good
I learned it to work on my right hand hi hat endurance. Mr. DNA is fast 8th notes!
And the best one as well!
Dude, FAN-FUCKING-TASTIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks adam!
Was it an optical illusion or was the skin on the snare drum buckling? BTW, excellent job!
It had a big fat snare drum tortilla on it. A muffling sorta device.
excellent! nice work. suppose you have a gut feeling in your back pocket....
Got the Mothersbaugh look downpat.
Ide leave a comment but I'm too scared no one will comprehend my potato 😢😊😊
:)
I comprehend.
I am a suburban robot here to monitor reality.
thank you david byrne
What is on the snare head that looks like it moves when you strike it? Some sort of gel pad?
It’s a big fat snare drum tortilla-a snare muffling thing
a very smart patrol...
Please do Satisfaction!
Drummer to (a much better) drummer: This was a joy to watch. How about Wiggly World, Pink Pussycat and Blockhead next? :)
Wow thanks! Maybe wiggly world should be next as I think there’s been a few requests. Keep on a-rockin dude!
And he even has time to pick his nose!
is good but Alan actually played the hi hat part with his left hand and right hand did the snare and fill. still, nice job!
Yeah you’re right. I think he did that for the look of it, which is another cool part of Alan’s playing.
Look and the feel. Creates a slightly different sound that way.. as subtle as it might be
Fucking awsome!
How loose is that snare skin. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Not loose; it has a big fat snare drum tortilla on top. It’s a muffling cloth thing.

Neil Peart doesn’t stand a chance
Lol I’ve been learning yyz the past few weeks and I must disagree :)
Awesome!!!
