It would have been nice for Mr. Gupta to have a working map or large TV behind him instead of a green screen. The editors have not worked hard enough to highlight the different areas as Mr. Gupta is talking about them. Understanding the topographical geography of this region is crucial to understanding its history. For most of us, JK is a flat 2D chicken on a map. A weather channel like set up would help this show a lot.
I am an editor and VFX artist myself. Let me know if I can help in this regard for future episodes.

General Kulwant Singh was overall in charge / commander of Indian military operations in Kashmir in 1947. 48. He is referred to as the saviour of Kashmir. Gen Kulwant Singh was one of the Founders of our Sainik School. Once ,during a meeting with our School's students ,Gen Kulwant Singh shared his anguish. He said , ' Till this day I cannot understand the reasons why , when we were about to retake Muzaffarabad , PM Nehru ordered us to stop . ?

Pakistan is now a proxy of China in Kashmir and Ladakh.
Article 370 gave India only a limited say in the affairs of Jammu and Kashmir , including Ladakh , which suited both China and Pakistan .China was always a player in the so-called Kashmir dispute overtly only between India and Pakistan. China wanted Ladakh to link up with Pakistan and Shaksgam valley . State Govt of Jammu and Kashmir , including Ladakh , was sympathetic to Pakistan ‘s and ultimately to China ‘s interests , especially in Ladakh. Example Late Sheikh Abdullah refused to allow His Holiness The Dalai Lama and his followers to settle in Ladakh when they took refuge in India . Ladakh was most suitable for Tibetans both from climate and cultural points of views. India ‘s direct control over both Kashmir and Ladakh has put an end to the China - Pakistani collusion . Present standoff in Ladakh is a joint China- Pakistan conspiracy. Now ,China fears losing Tibet and Aksai Chin and Pakistan losing Gilgit and Baltistan

After 1947-48 Kashmir operations when Nehru declared a pre mature ceasefire , the next best opportunity was during 1971 war / Simla talks . But Indra Gandhi let a golden opportunity slip by.
Now , militarily very difficult . Casualty ratio regarding Attacking ; Defending in the mountains is around 9 ; 1 . In plains it is 4 ; 1 .
Besides POK is , now , Chinese colony. To recover it India would have to fight a Two Front War

Mr Shekhar Gupta, while your views and inputs are respected, there are few glaring errors, eg, Gilgit fell before signing of the IOA. I recommend you or your team goes through a set of five books written (sector wise) of 1947-48 conflict. Out of five, two sectors as you addressed today, are covered in two books, ie Treachery & Gallantry: Giligit-Skardu-Ladakh 1947-48 and In the Nick of Time: Saving Kashmir Valley 1947-48.
Gen Sen's book remained unchallenged till legendary Gen Harbalsh Singh wrote his memoirs and slowly, it is seen as an account of self-glorification. Anyway, the books mentioned above have been selected as the study material for promotion exams for the officers of the Indian Army. I am sure you will get some real great insights. Going through all five books will be as great too.

Perhaps you could have briefly spoken of Point NJ 9814 (which, as you know, is a grid reference on the map, beyond which the LC was not demarcated and said to proceed "thence northwards") and the AGPL (Actual Ground Position Line), a 70 odd km demarcation on the Glacier between India and Pak. Having served in Northern Glacier to defend this line, some of us feel a special attachment to it.
In a subsequent CTC, it would be good if you could cover the McMahon line, why Chinese consider ALP as 'Southern Tibet' , their spurious claim on Tawang and other contentious issues in the Eastern Sector.

I have seen many instances of 10 pages worth of articles on J&K / Border geopolitics with all kinds of events put in but not a single map attached,
Like the entire galwan episode and it's aftermath, where the news mostly speaks about positions on ground, but not one media house did it justice with maps, NOT ONE

Very interesting summary of all the different sections of the Kashmir issue. I thought it was simpler - Indian Kashmir, POK and Aksai Chin. Anyway, in just a couple of years the next Avatar will appear. He will be a powerful Avatar so many of these issues will be settled in some way. Islam will have difficulty surviving because they don't have the concept of an Avatar - so the reason for the existence of Pakistan may itself go away. Kashmir as a whole may become part of India, but it may also have greater autonomy. China may lose Aksai Chin as well as Tibet.

For all that their political flip-flops, deception and trickery, I think the Pakistanis are justified in at least one thing : separating Gilgit-Baltistan from main Kashmir. As an outsider, it is obvious to us that Kashmiri identity is quite distinct from those of GB (essentially Turkic/Central Asian) and of Ladakh (essentially Tibetan). In fact, India itself recognized the distinctness of Kashmir and Ladakh when the J&K state was split in 2019 into separate J&K and Ladakh entities. I don't think a Mongoloid highlander up in the pristine snow-clad mountains of GB or Ladakh is exactly concerned about what goes on in Srinagar or Muzaffarabad - why drag them into this endless conundrum?

    • @jzxynow2a8gs21

IMO, that is some top level non-sense.
If we go with what you just proposed, then there is no reason for any multi-ethnic nation states (like India) to exist in the first place, and moreover the same concepts can apply to Pakistan as well (Even more so than India itself, given how bad they are at managing / acknowledging multi ethnicity within their nation)

Twice during the talk it was stated that Gilgit Baltistan (GB) became a part of Pakistan through the coup organized by Major William Brown before J&K acceded to India. This is INCORRECT. Hari Singh, J&K Maharaja signed the instrument of accession on 26th Oct 1947. Major Brown led the coup on 31st Oct 1947 5days after and raised the Pakistani flag subsequently. GB was taken on lease for 60 years by British government from Maharaja of J&K earlier but was retroceded back to Maharaja on 1st Aug 1947. Major Brown a serving British officer was with the Gilgit Scouts at that time and was loaned to Maharaja for continuance. Apart from the fact that the British Army did not take any action against him, he was stangely given an OBE subsequently for reasons which are not clear. In Dec 1947, Col Sher JungThapa MVC (earlier with the State Army) with some soldiers proceeded from Leh to relieve the besieged Skardu Fort. But the fort fell in Aug 1948 to the Pakistani Army. Only the life of Col. Thapa was spared presumably because of his previous association with Douglas Gracey, C-in-C of Pakistan Army.

This is from 75 years ago ...Nehru did not want Kashmir for Bharat deep down.
That is my assessment in 2022. I was born in Sept 1947.
We migrated in June 1947 from Hyderabad Sindh to Udaipur.
The Borders as drawn in 1945 show a border that is not easily defended.
Look at Chickens neck in Jalpaiguiri.
Pakistan / Muslim League wanted to separate and deserved zilch.
Then came the LAC in 1948 which is a super duper blunder., Hindu Samaj
should have taken to the streets the day Cease fire was announced and
General Cariappa was told to stop. The LAC that leaves NH 1
vulnerable at Dras / Kargil ... Total madness.
Cariappa should have taken the Jhelum Riiver both sides, plus Mangala Dam
Location ( where Poonch meets Jhelum at Mirpur ) , Entire Neelam Valley
    ( Kishan Ganga ) , Muzaffarabad, Skardu / Gilgit and Chilas....then Cease fire .
Then Nehru gifted the Indus water treaty in 1953 getting zilch in return
Then in 1955 Sheikh Abdullah double crossed Nehru.
Hindu samaj was once again quiet.
Idiot Samaj ( That includes my highly educated Grandfather who was 55 in 1947
and my Father who was 28 in 1947. Rest in peace.
