- BMW N54 335i Engine Removal: E90 E92 Engine Swap
So its time to pull the N54 out of the e90 so we can start getting it ready to go in to the e92 335i. This is normally not too bad of a job, but due to being on dirt and the impact damage, it has proven to be a bit of a challenge.

That was one of the sketchiest things I've seen in a while... fantastic :D
You're welcome sir!
I am about to do a version of this. Out doors on a slope of gravel. I decided to use 2 12k ramps for the back and boards for the front. Pulling a bad engine and good transmission out. Putting the trans on the new good engine and reinserting it. No lift. Just creativity.
I’m doing an engine swap on my e92 I’d recommend doing all gaskets, valve cover and rod bearings. Fairly simple and great way to extend the life of your n54.
Guys, its much easier to take it out with two hooks and a metal rope. Take of intake mani and use the towk hook mount at front the above starter hole for the second hook.
Fun to watch! It reminds me of how I used to do such things ... sketchy and without all the right equipment. At least you used an engine hoist! I used a come along and a tree.
The wheels to hold the car is actually a decent idea because they have a huge surface area on the soft ground.
Thats what we figured. Its actually sat on them quite well.
I second doc, dude as a technician this was one of the sketchy engine pulling videos out there. 😂😂With that said you guys are rad keep on going N54 for life. 🤘🏻
Haha, don't get me wrong i would have love it to have been on the lift, but you gotta do what you gotta do sometimes.
Zero To 60 I have to say I’m a heavy equipment diesel tech and sometimes you have to just go for it. Bumski about the low compression, build it now !!! I have a 08 335i I’m building and it’s sooo worth it team N54
Watching this because I need to replace all gaskets on the motor. I figured it'd probably be easier to just pull it out than try and fight it in the car
That moment when the bloody thing finally came free, I was like "phew!" 😂
The damn heat shield just kept catching.
Dont you love when the hoist is busy so you have to do things the hard way... good to see you managed and I'm looking forward to seeing the beast back on the road 😊
Yeah, back to reality today, haha. Wasn't too bad in the end. We were just lucky we have had a few weeks of no rain, so we could still move the engine crane.
For there being that much damage you got the motor out fairly smooth.
Well done, gents! I was genuinely worried for your safety!
So was i..... to be fair it is actually sitting quite well on the wheels.
@@ZeroTo60Tube Better than old school Cinder Blocks!! Those things can crumble. I have seen MUCH worse than this in my time! Do be safe though guys..
Just what I needed haha, been reading and been scared of all these things on the internet again. Oil pump bolts loose, cam ledge with the metal bearing throwing vanos codes, crankhub etc. Feeling like I wanna prepare so my next car gets an engine removal and kind of a refresh so everything is bulletproof.
To be honest, if the engine wasn't wedged in from the crash, it really wouldnt have been too bad to pull at all.
@@ZeroTo60Tube Hmm, would you recommend using a lift if possible? I might have access to a lift for like 48h or so. But I feel like that's a bit optimistic since you kind of always run into issues. Looking to do both turbo swap, crankhub, and more in the future just to make it bulletproof. Heard horror stories, and even though I've owned 2 without any problems, I always worry.
Well as soon as the M5 is off our lift, i will use the lift to pull the engine on my e92. Will definitely let you know how much easier it is. But i am thinking its going to be a lot easier.
Oil pump bolts loose, cam ledge bearing. Never heard of these being N54 problems maybe a earlier build issue?
@@BimmerM5e39 heard a few oil pump bolts go and then rip engine. cam ledges aren't that big of a deal but can throw random vanos codes etc, from 09 I think they made the gasket rubber I think. Vehicular DIY has a great new video about it. I got the newer parts for my last car.
“If I die at least I’ll be on camera”😂😂
Haha, engine crane on grass. That's been soo much fun every time I've done it. I don't envy you doing that.
Good video.
Keep up the good work.
Tell you what, so lucky we did it yesterday. So much rain over night, no way we would have been able to move the crane.
That was wild , i wish we were in the same country nothing will make me mlre happy than expend my sunday doing this with you guys , i have done a swap for my E90 from a 535xi we drop the hole suspension it was the hell of a job
That was the original plan, but when i realised how smashed the subframe was, i thought it's probably going to be easier to leave the subframe in there. However, not sure if i made the right choice anyway.
@@ZeroTo60Tube oh yeah thats way easy
You should do studs and head gasket
Brave hearts and courage to do this removal the way you did, good work men. Ausie, Ausie, oy,oy,oy
Cheers dude!
Should have put a plank of MDF under the engine crane. Great work though boys, loving the channel!
Walnut blast before installing super easy in comparison
Aussie bush mechanics haha top vid fellas cheers 🍻
Looking forward to the next phase, engine rebuild ☺
1 car is currently sitting on 4 stumps (the Stunpmaster 4000) and the other is having an engine swap. I will upload a video at some point if anyone is interested.
So you gonna have to move all the new parts inc. Turbos from the old to the new engine
Lots of work!
That was the plan, get the e90 engine in to the e92 and keep playing with the Hybrids.
I thought your mate had turned up to help, he was nowhere to be seen during the hard bit 😂
Typical really..... hahah
would have been easier to barra swap it i think ;)
looks like heaps of fun, tho i dont miss doing backyard mechanical work..
Easier or smarter...... lol
I'm probably wrong but that looks safer and better than using jack stands to me. But I haven't ever tried it although I do have enough tires and wheels to. But I'm too much of a chicken to try anything like that. Although this is similar to what is done in many wreckers yards or "Pick N Pull" etc type yards and I've worked underneath cars in those yards for sure so....hmm....
Might seem strange but check the cam surfaces for rust.
I want to send you guys a picture because I also took my engine out in the dirt
Put a baffle in the sump please
At 11:40. Guy just phases into existance lol
Damn, the turbo outlet pipe on the right hand drive N54 is so crimped! There’s got to be upgrade for this?? Congrats on getting it out, boys.
There's no great option. This one has had a hit from the steering rack, so it is a little worse than normal. But not much worse.
Tear the engine apart and make sure it’s to spec. I’d also do the bearings NOW and maybe change rods and bolts? Least you’ll be able to run 30psi then!!
Well i am thinking this will live in the e92 temporarily while i build the e92 engine with some forged good bits.
Well fought battle there boys, that hoist on dirt had me laughing though, the struggle was real. Do all the things you mentioned at the end of the vid and while the sump is off why not do rod bearings for peace of mind.
Well the plan was to leave the rod bearings but... well wait till you the next video.....
How did u get the grey piece out of the connector in the dme box? Am struggling not to break it
Great video, i hope, hope, hope to god i don't get as many issues as you guys when get my 335, part of me just thinks get an e9x M3 do a few carbon bits big wing downs pipes and resonator delete and away i go. Only maintenance thing would be accelerator actuator and rod bearings. Gonna be a close call between the two cars.
If I get a super clean 335 thats gonna be £8k to £10k
Tune and pre engine service another £5k (Tune £3k) (Engine out service £2k)
M3 £12k to £13k
Rod bearings £2k
Carbon bits (wing splitter etc etc £1,500)
Wrap £1,700
F80 style headlights £380
Catless Downpipes, resonator delete and remap £1,000
This will be a tricky one. 🤔🤔🤔
If i found a low mileage M3 manual for £12k or £13k i'm all over it!!! & sometimes i see pink fly elephants 🤣🤣🤣
You guys need way more subs
thanks man, we are loving the youtube thing.
You are very lucky indeed, I’d at least use steel wheels, steel bends, aluminum just cracks and collapses leaving no time to react
Well done boys
Do you happen to know the model rims they have on them
Huge effort Guys
Great vid guys 😎👍🏻
Also with the rocker cover smashed like that id be very weary of using any of the head components of this engine. Id only use the bottom end of this one and the top end of yours.
Well, we'll get the valve cover off once the new one arrives and see what it looks like in there. Hopefully its fine. It was right at the back under the scuttle, so it would have been protected from dust and rain pretty well. Hopefully not much go in there. I am fairly confident the 10 seconds i ran it in the first video is the first time it was started since the crash.
Are those turbos destroyed? Looking for a cheap mock-up set to test fit into an E46 on the M54 engine before I buy 19T's :)
Clean the oil pick up!
Hey I have a question for you guys, so I’m removing the engine, I’m wondering why did you cut the fuel line instead of unpluging it from the block and the hpfp
No, i undid the quick disconnect which is just in the engine bay, where the soft line joins the hardline which is screwed in to the pump. The fuel line is a hard plastic line under the car, then just before the engine bay it joins a softline which connected to the hardline on the pump........ I hope that makes sense.
What type of rims are those on the wrecked e90? #?
Did you find out what happened to old engine any luck on that you need replace all gaskets valve cover looks destroyed
Still waiting on a leak down test on the old one. But im guessing its bottom end. So probably piston rings or ringland. Wont know for sure till we strip the e92 engine. But i wanna get the car running asap.
Cane corsos?
Watch latest video from @vehicular diy on updated crankhub
Mad man 😂😂😂😂
🎉🎉🎉
Geeez really.. why would you do this this way
You dont really have many options on the dirt.....
@@ZeroTo60Tube 🤣
Hi mate how much for the 🐈's downpipe very interested?
Someone has got their name on them already.
Want to sell the down pipes genuinely interested
Someone does already have their name on them. Sorry man.
All good thanks anyway
Please do not ever do this again. When you asked for tips I could not think of anything, Watching this video is getting my nerves up. I know that in theory the car is stable. But wow.
I bet you facepalmed while editing this. This is horror.
Great job guys.
Those downpipes can still be used. A dent like that has no effect on performance. The flow is never maxed out. Something similar got tested on Motortrend's Engine Masters. But it was the manifold, but I bet it holds true also for downpipes
Ahhhhh we did all give it a good wobble on the wheels. It was pretty solid until we started to lift the engine, then it got exciting haha. We also made sure there was always something solid like the spare ramps under the car where we were under it. Just in case.. I have seen that motortrend episode. It was kind of surprising. Engine masters is one of my fav shows on there.
