finnibert lunchiken, same here! I remember that the BV commercial used to drive me crazy because of the audible breathing in. I thought Andrea Martin’s send up was great then. Watching it today, now I’m the one gasping for air, just from laughing. She’s brilliant!
The Brenda Vaccaro ad only ran a short time before her wheezing was edited out which made it even more unnerving! The parody and Andrea's performance are so hilariously perfect! One of my all time favorites :)
The brilliance is that everybody knows (everybody who knows the Brenda Vaccaro thing anyway) what Andrea Martin is going to do but it's still so ridiculously funny when she delivers it.
I remember when the BV tampon ad first ran with her loud breathing; they doctored it an ran it some more. I'm sure Andrea Martin watched it and thought, 'Oh! That's irresistible! I can't leave it alone!' So she mocked BV and it quite a fine job of it.
That makes 3 of us, because my brother and I never missed seeing SCTV live and we’ve LOVED the Poochare ad to this very day, still often mentioning it... and neither of us knew about the jeans commercial until now!
The thing about Bonjour Jeans is that back in the early eighties the fashion industry thought they were being very futuristic and edgy. They now look hopelessly cheesy.
OMG. I remember that whole issue with Brenda Vaccaro in that commercial. I used to make of it growing up and then I saw the revised version without the wheezing. I was like, why did they have to cut that out lol.
Ha, same here! I thought the first as was a spoof. I don’t remember that ad specifically, probably a Canadian one. But the hairstyles and fashion were real. We all thought we looked “futuristic, now!”
Hate to break up your party, but they were spoofing the way she breathes. But I suspect you would of got that memo watching the real ad that preceeded this skit. Carry on...
When I was a small kid, my father wrote a letter to one of the networks, complaining about ads for feminine hygiene products, such as this one. He wrote that it caused him embarrassment when I, his son, would ask him what a tampon or a douche was. To this day, I remain in the dark about these things.
Thank you for showing both the real and the parody commercials so younger kids can get the humor! Great idea
Not so fast, check out @maxwellberk2914 posting dated 2 months ago. Hahaha. Whooosh!!
Its incredible to me that I was about 10 years old, knew the commercial, got the joke and laughed my head off when I saw this. Ill never forget it.

+kmrjo They actually played this ad during SCTV after the parody came out. I think the Playtex people had a sense of humor.
+salvadorpringle OMG! Just makes it better!!

Andrea and Catherine O'Hara are two of the funniest ladies on earth.
I never knew Poocharé was a parody of anything specific! I’ve always loved Eugene Levy in that skit. Awesome.

It's dog food. It's now.

I love how they mocked the 80s DURING the 80s.
Andrea Martin = Brilliant comedienne! This is too hilarious! Thanks for posting!
Andrea is just brilliant!

Whatever. Brenda Vaccaro was & always will be sheer perfection! LOL
Came here after seeing Joan Rivers joke about this on Johnny Carson. Love SCTV 😂 They were hilarious 🤣
Playtex should have used Andrea Martin impersonating Brenda Vaccaro. They would have sold a lot more Tampons.
Listening to Ms.Vaccaro's wierd sounds has left me helpless with laughter, who cares what she's selling?
Bren's Genfem Protecteze Pons!
“If you’re obsessed with feminine gentleness...” 😂
I am feeling pretty stupid right now. I thought the parody started here 0:01 . I later realized I was wrong. Were 80s commercials really that tacky?

@@drsloanski Having been born in '72, the '80s *WERE* the future. We've been on an excruciatingly long downward slide of devolution ever since.
Martin's skit really made me laugh. I used to make fun of BV's Playtex ad when I was a kid.
Dynamite comedy combination: john candy, Eugene Levy!!
Hilarious 🤣😁👌
@ 1:50 that laugh by Brenda Vaccaro where'd they come up with that laugh hilarious

The real commercials are as bizarre & laughable as the spoofs.
I guess she was nervous filming. I assume she was taught breathing exercises.
Didn’t I do it for you, Kermie?
I think Brenda herself is inhaling after each time she says a phrase
Bad mic’ing
"Sold only at women's shoos that only women.know where they are." 😅
Johnny Bravo's mother talking about feminine hygiene products. I don't think there's anything else to say there.
three people have no sense of humor
Relatives, I'm sure...
Pretty women better than today.
