As to You're contaminated hydraulic fluid!🔧 Pump fluid into 55 gallon barrels and set them outside if temperatures stay below Freezing 🥶 long enough the water should freeze and the oil can be pumped out leaving the Ice/water in the barrels!🤔 You could also try the Sock method inside the barrels as well. Some new, clean hydraulic fluid will be needed in tge Crane of course until you can clear up the water issues. The barrels could be left, undestrubed in your shop and after some time the water should sink to the bottom so the good fluid could be sucked off the top! 😅 Just ideas I've used in the past, I hope they help. $700.00 for US made cable before taxes and or any shipping costs. Awesome work and awesome Crane!!❤
Hey Jeff when winding the cable on the drum, hook the end to your forklift and have someone put light pressure on the brake while winding onto the drum. Clint from C&C equipment does it this way and it seems to work great. Keep the viedos coming Jeff !!!
If I remember, my D8 cable lift blade winch needs 4, or was it 8, wraps on the smooth drum to have enough friction to handle the load. It says it in the winch manual, I might have to dig that book out to be sure.
"Missed it by that much." I wonder if anyone under 50 will understand the reference.. $1434 Jeff Anderson quote of the month "Balls" Thanks for posting Jeff.
Jeff you can also poor 99+% industrial isopropyl alcohol in hydraulic oid. We would do this in the U.S. Navy for diesel, oil fuel, JP5(jet fuel) and hydraulic oil. This break up the water molecules causing the water bounded to the alcohol to evaporate with it or able to be burn with fuels. Plus this will kill diesel algae.

The M88A1 recovery vehicle had a 6 x 19 hoist rope 5/8 inch dia. it would consistently break at around 36,000 pounds. We would run a bar thru the spool and tie the bar to a forklift to add some friction so that when feeding a new cable on so there would be some tension.
I am not a big fan of the set screw cable retention method. I was part of a well drilling operation that had a winch that used two set screws to retain the drill hoist cable. Well to make a long story short, the cable and winch drum parted company and somewhere around 1000' feet or nearly 40,000 lbs of drill string, kelly and supporting gear came crashing down 20 feet onto the rotary table. Nevertheless it was a mess and when the rig was rebuilt we demanded a wedge retention system. Yes the rig drilled again. The drillers undies however were not salvageable and were burned in a ceremony. BTW Cable will cost $546 plus shipping
Congratulations Brian. I am gobsmacked! Was going on the rope on a D4 myself. Was only a couple of hundred feet short 😅 new cable will be around $732.73 cheers and G'day from Tasmania
Love your content, Jeff great job on the crane many lesser men would’ve given up! I think you need to find a way to park that thing inside like a museum piece would be kept and it will last you a very long time and do you a lot of good work.

I only won one thing in my life, a foot ball that was a give away in a small grocery store in a little town we lived in. Population 300. Forgot I even put in for the drawing but was surprised when told I won it. Brought it home and me and brother went out and threw it back and forth a couple times and I thought let me see how far I could kick it. First time I put the boot to it it popped. That was almost 60 years ago. I won’t try and guess the cost of the cable because it’s my luck someone will beat me even if it’s just by a few cents. Even if I did win it the hat and T-shirt probably would get lost in the mail or someone that watches jpaydirt would steal it during shipment.
I'm not sure testing one glow plug like that is representative of how the system will work... One connected directly to the battery is going to get hotter, and much faster, than all 6 pulling current through a crappy wiring harness. But I suppose you'll quickly figure out how much glow is actually needed in various conditions, and remember "no more than 30 seconds".
Congratulations, Mr.Brian and if you dont accept the prize I will with my solid 320 foot guess!🤠 I would think a note should be left by the glow plug button for random operators to not hold over 5 seconds. I am going to guess the cable set Ole Jeff back $1530 with shipping.👍
Probably too late but the workshop manual recommends a more flexible cable than you were talking about in the last video. According to that manual 4 falls and 3 extensions needs 330ft of cable. But I doubt you'll ever be lifting at full boom extension and elevation.
The strength of the cable tension is not determined by the set screw. It is determined by 3-4 wraps of cable that is always meant to stay on the drum and those 4 wraps around the drum create enough friction that the cable will not slip around 4 wraps of the drum up to the crane's max capacity. The set screw just holds the cable in place so you can snugly wind 4 wraps of cable around the drum.
Your off in your meter calculations . 1 meter = 39 inches . 316.5 X12= 3798 inches divided by 39 inches = 97.3246 M It took me a long time to get the goofy metric system down to , them guys across the pond will be laughing behind your back . Looks like a 1000 feet to me. Enjoyed your little project . Put a hot water tank on it so it will start and just plug it in , them engines got to be coldest starting things . A German IH D310 or D358 will out start and run better than a D292 any time , You just pull the stop cable out till it gets hard to pull and will start . Can't wait for the D9 show .
Jeff make sure u get the right lay of cable There’s right and left lay cable. Also you can transfer the new cable directly from the spool it comes from but ideally you want to unspool the new cable and run the inboard end onto your drum. It will spool much better I assure you. If you wanna know why I have those options it’s because I operate pipe layers which are a dozer chassis with a boom and lifting block on one side and counterweights on the right side. If you run the line straight off the delivery spool it will want to unspool off your drum unless you can lift weight as you wrap your winch. Rule of thumb is no weight until you have 7 wraps on your winch. And if you find your snatch block twisting with no weight, you can remove the wedge at the lift block and twist the cable the opposite direction the block twists and rerun through your sheaves and instal your wedge. If you’re gonna use it in the winter I highly suggest you use atf instead of grease in your sheaves. It will not freeze up and allow you to load up without it ratnesting on your drum. Love your channel Jeff!!!
That set screw was me Jason on RUclips jeff 😅. It really doesn't take much to hold the rope on the winch and I'm sure the book says keep a minimum of 3 wraps on the drum.
$840 for the 300' of the cable plus the LTL shipping. I'm not guessing on the shipping since I do not recall where you are getting the cable from or the distance to your shop.
Last time I bought cable was about 10 years ago at BISCO here in town and it was 1/2 inch and was $0.80 some cents per foot and they'd sell how ever many feet you'd want.
I think pig mats make something that takes water out of oil my son works for tormont and was talking about how they clean water out of an excavator that someone left the funnel in the tank for a couple weeks
With the track hoe, crane, dozer, and pans have you looked into a hydraulic oil filter/recycling unit? Probably can make one but there are several types. A couple of big filters or a centrifuge or a small vacuum tank that would allow pulling a vacuum on 50 gallons at a time, a gear pump etc. I have not hired someone to reclaim hydraulic oil but probably is a service that's out there.
Unless Jeff bought some exotic lifting rated winch cable and it a naked (just the cable no eyes or hooks etc) will cost about $546 plus about $175 in shipping for a grand total of $721
Hi Jeff you could put a resistor in the line to the glow plugs and reduce the voltage. Did you say they operated on 11 volts. Some of the old mopars had a ceramic resistor beside the ignition coil to reduce the voltage one of them might work.
The wrap on the drum is the primary retention of the rope that's why they usually specify a minimum of one wrap. I'm guessing $568 bucks for 300' of rope
Jeff.Considering the time and money spent to get the old girl up and running.Have you thought about putting side panels on the hood to give the engine compartment some weather protection.
Unfortunately I don't know if any of those quick fixes for water in oil work, besides good old drain and refills. I did an old skid loader that had water in it had to drain original, fill again run it, then drain and fill again. I also did cylinder seals so that helped get a lot of the contaminated oil out of the system. I've seen some kind of additive that is supposed to take water out but it's expensive and who knows if it really works.
Jeff, using the blocks of wood to tension the rope will not be good. The strands will twist the rope as it goes through the blocks putting twisted rope on the drum. Twisted rope will not spool correctly and will make the block spin up. Put the rope spool on a stand and transfer it to the drum. Then hook the block to the 416 und use the 416 to pull on the rope as you let it out. Then pull the 416 back to you and ride the 416 brakes lightly.
You don’t clamp the wood block so tight that you twist the rope, only enough to tension onto the spool. Rope is also known as wire rope fore the uninformed.
I think you might find antiseize has an "insulating" effect. I changed glow plugs in a small Ford 1900 (old tractor) and they took forever to heat an would not get very hot, until I took them out and cleaned the anti -seize off.
@@Jpaydirt I didn't either, I put it on the threads.....I think that is where the glow plug "grounds" to complete the circuit so it can heat up. It may not be a problem on your crane........
there are pump systems you could hook to your hydraulics that will cycle the oil thru and filter and remove water. big systems are expensive but they do come up on the used market. Try fleabay, etc. I found a portable (on wheels) used one 15 years ago we use to filter and pump waste oil... With a 7.5hp motor it will move 1000 gallons an hour or more. Another option but terribly slow is an oil tramp system. You would have to drain all your oil into buckets and then the tramp slowly separates the oil and water.. not sure how well it will do with emulsified oil.
Stinking shitbirds, they always finding hiding spots to dump and nest. Well i was off by nearly double of what I guessed. Old cable would make a fence for your driveway, two tier stringers along entrance and grass. Rocket fast glow plugs, countdown from 5,4,3,2,1 blastoff. $1650.00 for the new cable.
