    prusik knot on the rope about 10-12 inches from the hole and pull it back into the hole with a chain hoist. check down in those little holes for set screws too. I have seen a few older cranes with nothing on the end of the cable just stuck through a hole in the drum since its never really supposed to hold any weight in the first place

  • @andyfields3248
    @andyfields3248 4 месяца назад +3

    250 foot . . .
    The hole probably has a set screw in it locking the cable in. Sometimes 2 set screws, top one to lock the bottom.
    When you wind on the new do so under load. Roll it out and get the twist out then drag something like a skid steer across yard to keep it lying tight on the drum. If the layers aren't put on tight the upper layers will pull between the lower layers and pinch, flatten, fray . . . Ruins your rope and may send coils out that'll tangl and damage other stuff. Wrecker manufacturers say to cycle it all the way in and out 5 times under load to train it to lay on the drum right.

    Wire rope on cranes should be lubricated frequently since the wire fibers slide on each other as the cable go over sheaves and around the drum. I have seen oilers on some cranes that apply oil as the rope travels past them.

    I worked in a hydraulic shop for a while, the standard was to boil and filter used oil and use it to test and fill cylinders as a means to recycle/dispose of it, just a heat cart for tar or undercoating with a 55-gal drum on it. set a thermostat at 220f and let it cook, when it reaches temp pump it thru a good filter and return it to service. The winch cable is usually not secured as well as u might imagine, is there set screws in the top of the spool to hold the cable while you start to wrap it on? my understanding is that 3 complete wraps around the spool supplies enough friction that nothing else is needed for a retainer or stop.

    Jeff,
    I think I see the problem with the block reaving. I noticed the sheaves slid from the left side of the block, to the right side, when you pulled the wire off the drum. Then I noticed the wire was not reaved over the left head sheave. As viewed from the operator's seat. The fleeting sheave should be all the way to the left. For a four part reaving, the wire goes over the fleeting sheave and over the left head sheave, down to the left block sheave, up to the center head sheave, down to the right block sheave, up to the dead end "B". If you want a five part reave, it is the same to the center head sheave, then to the center block sheave (the right block sheave put in the center), up to the right head sheave, down to the right side of the block on the sheave shaft. The five parts would need more wire. With a 60 foot 4 section boom, this would be about 425-450 feet of wire. The parts book should show the exact amount. The five part reave may need a different wedge socket. On the 150 they show a socket "A" and a "B". It seems more like it is location "A" "B" "C" of the wedge socket to dead end at. Here is a screen shot of the 150 manual showing the reaving from the front. Still looking for the hoist drum wire securement.

    I'd say your chain thru the counterweight hoses was getting a pretty good workout. We were rigging 34,000# today and our sling angles from horizontal were about 38°. At 30° your sling tensions are twice what a vertical sling would be. So if you are lifting 5,000# with two rigging legs at 30° that means you have 5,000# tension in both legs. Today I had to tell the riggers to get bigger slings because of the angle. Dang engineer put four lift lugs way too far apart for no apparent reason. Forced us to go with shallow sling angles so we would have enough lift height with our particular overhead crane.
