Studio One: How to make a Tempo Map

- Setting a static tempo is an easy and straight forward process. Even adding static tempo changes for different sections of the song is as easy as adding a node to the tempo track.
What can you do if you record drums not to a metronome or click track?
When a band wants to record live and get the groove and feel for the song, a click track may actually be distracting and pull away from the natural feel of a few musicians in a room together.
Making a click track and adjusting that to the live performance of the recording isn't difficult to do, and we'll go over what you need to do to adjust the click track, and then be able to export it for use in other DAW's.

Man, this exactly what I was looking for. Especially the export portion. Thank you soo so much Tim! You rule
You're very welcome!
Fantastic tutorial! I love that S1 can snap the tempo and grid. So smart!
Very clear and concise Tim.
I also use manual mapping where convenient.
Mapping to readily identifiable transients like drum hits is relatively simple.
More difficult, I've found, is mapping to say ... acoustic guitar and guide vox.
I invested in different levels of Melodyne until I got sufficient facilities to 'map to demo'.
For me that meant going up to 'Editor' level Melodyne.
No Bad thing in itself but an extra expense certainly.
A great tutorial
Glad you think so!
Good lesson. How do you make a continuously varying tempo map, a logorthymic tempo?
Good video BUT you actually don't need to create a node each time -- use "detect transients" and then Control/Command+click to drag the bar measure (or subdivision) to the already detected transient. Many fewer clicks overall (Marcus Huyskens has a video on this re: Studio One version 4.1.1). Thanks for all your content -- it's great.
Thanks for sharing a better way to do this! I should have known that Marcus has a video on this!
Great video Tim, thank you. In addressing Keith's question, one additional step should be taken beforehand: Open the Inspector column (letter "I" in the upper left) and make sure each track is set to "Don't Follow" in the Tempo line. This will prevent the tracks from moving around as a person is adjusting each downbeat in the Tempo track. Then work the tempo track from left to right.
I couldn't have said it better myself!! Thanks for helping Keith out multitracker!
it did not solve my problems. I already did it with the Drums, Trying to tempo map the vocals (92bpm) to a 120bpm it either goes to fast or it goes slow. Nevermind I will figure out myself. Have a blessed day.
Nice you showed us that, BUT why can't Studio ONE not generate the tempo map automatically !!!!! Cubase 12 Pro can !! I have both . But a good video !!
Thanks for this. Wow, I would expect S1 to have a way to automatically find bpm variations.
Is it as easy to fiks tempo errors on midi drums or should I convert the instrument part (Addictive Drums) in to a audio track and do a fiks? What is less work?
I need to find out what you did before this vid that created all the timeline with tempo change nodes on it. Got a vid you can point me to?
Working on a song and ran into this same question. I still don’t know what you did to get that timeline with all the nodes on it. Got a video on that?
@@zipperhead101 needs a title change or step 1 video called 'How to create/add a tempo track/tempo map. Which begs the question not that I write this....is a tempo map a tempo track that isn't static beat throughout?
Can someone explain how to get this version of the tempo track - mine is the solid white one where you can't add gradual curves :(
good, but I need to do it on a string quartet...?
doesn't melodyne map tempo, not sure if the included essentials has this
I'd like to know how to handle this scenario, Tim.
1. I record a solo acapella track, no click.
2. I record another singer's acapella track, no click.
3. I want to tempo match those two performances to match a steady click so I can 'build' musical parts in tempo to fit.
Got any idea what I mean? And how to do it? The singers sing at different tempos and I don't want pitch shifting or artifacts. I use an MD421 Mic and S1 5.2
How can you create a tempo map and then increase the overall tempo?
If I create a tempo map, will an imported midi track follow it? Like a midi drum loop will speed up and slow down in those micro bursts along with the tempo track you (I) create?
It should! Midi tracks will follow the midi information. If for some reason it doesn't open the inspector of the track you want to make sure follows and double check the follow settings.
Thanks for that information, Tim. My guitar player and I were just talking about wanting to do this the other day for songs we’ve live-tracked on which we loved the groove and feel of what we played even though it wasn’t completely the same tempo throughout. Close - but human created, not computer driven. So anyway, we wanted to be able to create a click track where we could make sure dubs we played and sung were correct to the song even if we were to mute the drums. So thank you very much for the tip. Saved us some time from fumbling around trying to figure that out on our own. Cheers!
I’m trying to get my head around this. I don’t understand the point of doing it in the first place 🤔
There's a lot of uses with tempo maps. If you're using synced delay times, they'll lock to the map. If you need to make a click track for another player (like i showed in this video), or if/when you go play live (although, if it was tracked live, I doubt that it would be played to a click!) . You can use them for practicing, help get your internal tempo locked in! There's lots and lots of uses.
@@TimTalksAudio thanks for the explanation.
How much do you charge to master a song? I have the beat and recorded the vocals but i would love to make the vocals sound much better...
Hello @Reyes Diaz, for booking inquiries, please email me at info@timflanzbaum.com. Thanks!
How do I create a tempo map so that later the audio follows this tempo when I change it?
A trick : watch series on Flixzone. I've been using them for watching loads of movies during the lockdown.
@Eduardo Payton Yea, I've been using Flixzone} for since november myself :D
Drums loop track. Vocals are moving when doing this. doing a hip hop / trap beat. doing a remix contest need to WIN. and when I try to match acapella sample 92bpm C tempo and chop samples to my 120bpm drums it either gets to fast or slow get frustrated and just turn it off. Thank you.
Hey Keith, please see my comment above (multitracker). I believe this will solve the issue you described.
Multitracker said it correctly, in the inspector, turn the loop track off of "Follow Tempo" and set it to "Don't Follow"
@@TimTalksAudioalready know how to do this, maybe I asked the question wrong. thank you have a blessed day.
@@multitracker it is not above , it is below. Already know to do that, I am talking about the vocals (92bpm) to match that a lined up perfectly. nevermind thank you have a blessed day.
So for the vocals, to have them stretch, you could set that track to follow the tempo, but you may be better off using the time stretch option to lock them to the groove.
Just a quick question. when I export the track as a midi file and then try to load it back in studio one. I get a msg that the file is broken and cannot be loaded. tried it twice. any advice?
When you drag the midi map back in, are you trying to drop it onto an instrument track, or onto the meter/tempo track(s)?
@Tim Talks Audio hey Tim! I tried both and I get the msg. It asks if I want to use general midi sounds and then I get the the msg.
You don't have to do any of that now really. Just edit the drum track with Melodyne in percussive mode then you drag the track up into the tempo lane and its all done!
How would a drummer deal with a song written without a click? I can find the BPMs on a Google search, but that an average. Say I was able to find a drumless Zeppelin track, and it says BPM=118. The tempo can change from bar to bar. Can I get the metranome to read to track, and set the tempo like that? Yes, I'm new at this
Older songs were tracked to click tracks or metronomes, but they weren't corrected to be perfect on the grid. There will be some fluctuations and that's natural. For something like a Zep track, you might be able to use Melodyne to tempo map it, but it might be easier (especially if you don't have Melodyne) to add a manual tempo map. Bring in the song and follow the steps in this video to mark where the down beats are. You can add multiple markers to be meticulous, but with the every other bars down beat, you should be good.

You mention the 'stems' of a song. What are stems?
Stems are usually sub mixes of groups of sounds. Like “drums” “bass” “guitars” etc etc.
@@TimTalksAudio Gotcha, thanks! This video has really helped me, thanks!
at 7:00 he says how to actually do it
If you do drums like this, it’s just drum machine, not artist.
Nope, you’re wrong.
