i can't help but feel a bit proud of Linkara, since taking the plunge and checking out his content some time ago I've really come to admire him for all he's done. I only just got around to watching the whole thing, and man do I like it, but what I like more is seeing something from a creator I love reach an audience outside of them. Not only reaching you but the big guy Night Mind himself, that's quite the accomplishment. So here's to the Winter of '83 and anything that comes after!
WOW i'm so glad youtube randomly recommended me this video, the quality is amazing. the series itself is also fantastic, so glad i could learn about it from this -- that snowman with a human face at the end freaked me out even tho it looks a little silly lol what a cool idea. keep up the good work!!
@@tylerleach8796 Linkara has a... Negative reputation. Specifically for being extremely smug, rude, self righteous, and a failed web comic creator. His last creative endeavor that wasn't critique based was a comic called 'Lightbringer' where he's a self insert super hero where women are enslaved.
Yeah Linkara can do some surprisingly good horror, 83 is the most purely horror project he’s done (as far as I’m aware) but some of the story lines he’s done in his main show, At4W (a Piece of the World is Missing, the King of Worms, the Sleepwalker ark, the story segments for most his Halloween reviews, for example). Not exactly “give you nightmares” levels but better them some of the stuff that’s come out of dedicated horror stories from creators with much better funding, and the guy can definitely write a good spooky story when he has a mind to.
As a Minnesota resident, I can confirm. This honestly doesn't seem that far out of the realm of possibility. Edit: Also, why didn't Carl just start running when the snowman started going "Y o U w I l L b E l I k E u S s S s"
Honestly the third episode with the woman dying and getting possessed was the peak. The body in the snow, the repeating voice, nothing else in the series - even the ending - creeped me out as much. I think that stupid text-to-speech voice and the over-repetition of the "hey can you help me with this?" and stuff killed the vibes for me.
tbh the "monster" being snow men is so dumb lmao the story was kinda cool but noones afraid of three snowballs without arms that can be killed with a hair dryer lmao
there is nothing i don't love about horror/analog horror specifically doing the scare of a stolen voice speaking stolen words that sound spliced, EVERY time that's done, i genuinely get so giddy
I just subbed. Ohhhh , I have never heard of this one . Yes ! A new must watch . Thank you. As a 60 year old woman I love analog horror because it reminds me of TV and things in my youth. Only one issue so far , you could turn a dial and adjust the tracking so it would not scroll or have snow.
Very interesting, this seems to be the modern equivalent of stumbling upon a B/C movie gem back in the VHS rental days. My only criticism would be the overuse of VHS distortion, it could be bad at times but it was never as bad as many of the modern attempts to replicate the era makes it seem lol. 15 -20% less visual distortion would've been adequate and more accurate.
i absolutely loved this!! i agree with your comment on how analog horror is one of the leading pioneers of the current horror genre as we know it. hope you cover more underrated analog series down the line, i thoroughly enjoy your coverage on them!
Got to watch using the term "the thing" when talking about unknown organic monsters especially in the cold 🥶 snow. Seems the writer was obviously inspired by the thing and the mist if not possibly the fog as well. Where odd way of nature behaving hides the real dangers. Edit: after getting most way through vid I see why you called it the thing. As the writers obviously used the term. Nice recap of the story
You have a nice voice fit for this genre! glad I discovered your channel. Subscribed and hope your viewership grows. keep uploading this kind of stuff!
Will you be doing more analogue horror? Like as someone else mentioned “the sinkhole” or was this just a one time sort of thing? I enjoyed it quite a bit and think more people should see this!
Thank you! I’d certainly like to do more videos on analog horror. I’ve got a couple of videos that I’ve already started on but after those I think I’m going to check out The Sinkhole and maybe some other series from there!
@@jaybird160Vintage 8 is an amazing Analog Horror channel. I recommend you start with The Tangi Virus, as that was basically the first series uploaded on that channel. Also, check out Orange Domino Studios.
The version I saw was a compilation of all the segments put together in sequence. Thought it was good and I liked how the somewhat short runtime is reflected in how short a period of time the story takes place in. It's like a little War of the Worlds.
And then how Linkara got so fuckin pissed after he found out about those impressions meanwhile Doug thought the impressions of him screaming were hilarious?
goddamn, for a series that was made for april fools; this was genuinely unsettling! its such a unique premise; some sort of bacterial lifeform that can manipulate radio waves and create a sort of primitive vessel for itself in the form of snow. though its another "science faces hubris after messing with things they shouldnt" but its just so fucking unique and strange, im so glad this video got recommended to me; this has to be one of my favorite small analog horror series i hope you cover more unknown analog horror series, i love finding out about new ones ive never heard of, the community is so creative with their horror now if ull excuse me im gonna go binge the rest of your videos >:3
You have to give it to the makers of this series for it's not only well put together but also the first analogue horror featuring actual, visible gore. Most would have deaths and violence implied or off-screen. So props to them for showing the, no pun intended, gory details.
Man, I'm kind of mad at the algorithm, it has been great to me as a viewer because it has been recommending a lot of small channels to me that I really end up vibing with and enjoying and I both love and hate that its always right at the beginning of a channel's career, cause I want to binge all of your videos but there's just a few at the moment. Please make more videos, if Wendigoon was an inspiration for you, that's awesome! Looking forward to when you make it Jay Bird! ❤
This is perhaps one of the most terrifying analog horror I ever saw. I'm from the state of Minnesota and we have long winters that will sometimes last till mid or late Spring (This years Minnesota winter season ended around March, which is surprising). I remember when I was in late Middle School, my school was cancelled due to a huge snowstorm that is coming despite how sunny it is outside. At around noon, everything went from nice and sunny to a harsh snowstorm that covered everything. Some other schools that were open had a hard time dropping off the kids back home from school due to the snowstorm. It got so bad that parents had to pick up their kids from the school buses that were stuck during the snowstorm. Steven going missing reminds me of an real incident that happened a few years ago. It was about a teenage boy who was found dead right next to his car with the front door open on the side of the road during winter. The cause of death was strangulation, but the police is unable to find any evidence of who killed him. What they do know is that the teenage boy parked his car to fix his car. Either the murderer attacked him while fixing his car, or the murderer came to "help" him but to only attack him.
lol chapter 4 is what got me too, the spliced vo icing with a robotic tone. every now and again "im so cold" plays in my head and i get goosebumps. that was creepy done right.
thank you very much for the video. this analog horror is very interesting, i am fascinated by the story. it's also great that all videos are out at once and we don't have to wait to know the whole story.
I really appreciated your summary at the end. A lot of videos don't do that but it really helps. one suggestion though, do a little analysis, expecting your take on what it all means, etc.
I know it's royalty free music but it'll forever be the "scare theatre" theme song to me lol. Amazing video brother. I look forward to catching up with the backlog
Great now I’m scared of: -The forest by my house (from the National Park one) -The hills and wilderness by my house (from the Harvester of Vita Carnis) -The Snow (of this obviously) -being scared (from Mandela Catalog) -space (from plenty of analog horrors but particularly the one with the Starkill virus) -and finally robots from literally any FNAF tape
yes! I been looking for something to watch while Alex Kansas and Nepthys media are on break and Kane is about to be making a whole damn movie 😆 THANK YOU
23:04 the person who is voicing the scientist here put their absolute _heart and soul_ into this moment oh my god There's lots of moments that feel jarring to me due to the differences in how people are acting, how their voice sounds in the recordings, etc. I'm assuming a majority of these people just did voice acting and from wherever they're at, rather than trying to go to one location so that when the audio is recorded it actually sounds like they're all in the same place. But this guy? Absolutely fantastic job, I would've loved for more of the kind of quality we can hear in how the audio sounds (like, they sound believably like they're in a basement, unlike the person playing Carl who has an insanely smooth mic but that making it feel jarringly out of place in analog horror, esp compared to how the scientist sounds), as well as that great acting.
Perhaps the reason why Winter '83 is so underrated is because while the story is well told, the concept is silly. We are talking about a creature that could easily be defeated with a flamethrower and that as soon as the freezing temperatures begin to decrease, it will melt like the snowman it is. is that I can understand that much of the horror of this story lies in not knowing what is happening, but once the story begins to clear up and it is understood that it is that creature, then the most obvious solution is to counterattack the being with what can damage it, that is, heat. the way the story is told is good because it knows how to keep the suspense along with the mystery, but as soon as you discover that the creature responsible for the murders is a being that is literally vulnerable to the torches of the angry mobs of the movies 1930s horror, then the concept that goes from interesting or disturbing to comical. In the end it is clear that the creature survives a whole year because it must have hidden in a cold place like a fridge to survive the heat of summer, which means that it can be easily destroyed. this creature pales a lot if we compare it with other beings from creepypastas or horror films of the 80s and 90s, not to mention the classics.
Yeah it's totally silly. The monster literally calls itself god and then it melts when the weather changes. I think most people are generally too quick to accept something as scary without actually thinking about it, or maybe they're just easily scared. Like if it has spooky VHS filters and low effort photoshop/audacity tweaks it's automatically scary to them.
@@ImperialCaleb You're assuming it can't just leave via radio waves and go somewhere that's cold. Which it can. Literally the only reason it didn't in this one was because it was established the radio station didn't reach very far there.
Brilliant analysis! Thanks for bringing attention to this series! The way the organism ‘extended’ itself through the snow kinda reminded me of a slime mold.
You're like the Clark Kent to Wendigoons Superman. Mad respect to the effort you've put into your videos, they're awesome and I've binged all of them, look forward to seeing more from you.
Even as a joke analog horror. It was really good and made feel that chill. 10/10! Shows how much the creator is capable, even if they’re doing it as a joke for April!
Dr Chandra's voice sounded super familiar, so I had to look up the cast, and YES I recognized him correctly: Scott Frerichs, aka KaiserNeko from TeamFourStar. Also part of the cast of this series are Nick Landis (Lanipator), Corinne Sudberg (Megami33) and Anthony Sardinha (Antfish), also core figures from TeamFourStar. Not a huge surprise to see Linkara employ fellow RUclipsrs for his work, and he chose some of the best. 👍🏻
The scientist scene near the beginning really impacted me honestly, it called back memories of the cheesy but genuine acting of the command & conquer games :)
Not having seen "Winter of '83", I thought that it was a real reference to some region's terrible weather... in the northeast, we reference the "Ice Storm of '91" and such!
I think Chandra being missing for 4 years is a typo. It's probably supposed to be 4 months, to match the amount of time he's been studying the lifeform in the old mansion.
I saw the posters in the background and that's an instant sub from me chum! 👍 (Then I stayed for the video and this is a great arg synopsis that I haven't heard before so this was great!)
Honestly like it was very refreshing to see a black character within an analogue horror as the recent more popular ones actually don’t hold that whatsoever. As well as the fact I haven’t seen most in general in a analogue horror which is pretty interesting.
Yeah! I wish more analog horrors would do more diversity within in the characters if I'm honest especially in those stories that happen not inside a specific region but the whole world
yeah, it's a welcome change for sure. i'd be curious to see an analogue horror from a non white perspective, especially since most analogue horror in the west kind of has that white-washed "good ol' u.s.a." vibe to it.
This is great! Like your style on presenting. Just a little monotone but overall a 4.5/5 and good attention to detail. I don’t feel you got too into the weeds in anything small or break things down too early. Good length, good analysis. Hope to see more!
13:30 Seems like a clear pod people/the thing omage to me at this point. The weird speech patterns at the council meeting mentioning "you will embrace us too" and such. The mysterious snowman showing up before the attack. The robotic use of the victims voice. Playing "the thing from another world" with was the origional movie adaption of the short story before "The Thing." The fact that story and its iterations also took place in a setting isolated by extreme cold conditions..very common body snatchers/among us vibes right at the start.
At first i didn't really watch the series because i thought the 1st episode was a bit goofy. But after i just finished watching it rn i gotta say it was a really good story, wouldn't say its scary but creepy.
Think the editing of the voices and background noises could be better, like using more pitches to help voices sound like they’re closer or further away. And maybe adding some more digital glitches to help them feel like it was actual footage from 1983. But no series is perfect and this is one the best analog horror series I’ve seen
Somehow RUclips knew to recommend a video on my own stuff to me while I was searching for a Power Rangers thing (probably because I just released the DVD for Winter of '83). XD

I’m glad RUclips mobile decided to show a big spoiler like this front and center when the video starts.

@@BunnyArisu you're watching a summary video for a series you haven't watched and complained you got spoilers?
Wow, seeing that this was from Linkara, his story writing skills have certainly improved since the Lightbringer. Pretty sick analog horror story!
My head canon is that this show got birthed because Oney and the gang bullied him with Lightbringer

i can't help but feel a bit proud of Linkara, since taking the plunge and checking out his content some time ago I've really come to admire him for all he's done.
The snowman really freaked me out too! Especially when it opened its mouth and made that odd noise! Thanks for watching!
Finally someone talks about Winter of 83'
It’s a great series that needs to be talked about more!
@@jaybird160 yes indeed its really good
i laughed a little bit at the "THEYRE IN THE DAMN SNOW"
I think that the reason the snow creature doesn't try to move its mouth when it talks is because the scientists were probably wearing face masks
Him saying that Linkara made this was a bigger jumpscare than any horror movie
Why?
@@tylerleach8796 Linkara has a... Negative reputation. Specifically for being extremely smug, rude, self righteous, and a failed web comic creator. His last creative endeavor that wasn't critique based was a comic called 'Lightbringer' where he's a self insert super hero where women are enslaved.

THIS video is underrated!! i didn’t expect such a high quality video from a smaller channel such as this!
Ha ha thanks I tried my best!
Because anything that can uses the S.A.M. Voice is clearly far too powerful for any mortal to escape.
Hypothermia and exhaustion probably
Fear does strange things to the human body
He considered an option to become white, like the snowman.
@@JeanMarceauxbut is getting rights worth it?
The sound design of this series, particularly the text to speech voice of the entity, really puts me in mind of vintage Doctor Who.
Reminded me of the Matt Smith era episode with all the evil alien snowmen
Very interesting, this seems to be the modern equivalent of stumbling upon a B/C movie gem back in the VHS rental days. My only criticism would be the overuse of VHS distortion, it could be bad at times but it was never as bad as many of the modern attempts to replicate the era makes it seem lol. 15 -20% less visual distortion would've been adequate and more accurate.
I suppose that could be excused based on the explicit “broadcast corruption” threat
i absolutely loved this!! i agree with your comment on how analog horror is one of the leading pioneers of the current horror genre as we know it. hope you cover more underrated analog series down the line, i thoroughly enjoy your coverage on them!
Glad you enjoyed! I’ll definitely be covering some more analog horror in the future
the moral of the story: people who mind their own damn business, survive

Got to watch using the term "the thing" when talking about unknown organic monsters especially in the cold 🥶 snow.
Seems the writer was obviously inspired by the thing and the mist if not possibly the fog as well. Where odd way of nature behaving hides the real dangers.
Edit: after getting most way through vid I see why you called it the thing. As the writers obviously used the term.
Nice recap of the story

The version I saw was a compilation of all the segments put together in sequence. Thought it was good and I liked how the somewhat short runtime is reflected in how short a period of time the story takes place in. It's like a little War of the Worlds.

You are making waves. Night Mind picked up on "Winter of 83" and that coming so close after your video is likely no coincidence.
This trend of RUclipsrs with less than 5k subs making some of the best video essays is refreshing
Going into an analog horror video and hearing "Linkara - Atop The 4th Wall" was like getting flashbanged by a ghost of my past
lol chapter 4 is what got me too, the spliced vo icing with a robotic tone. every now and again "im so cold" plays in my head and i get goosebumps. that was creepy done right.
Dude got so upset and cold after his jacket was taken he made a whole arg about it.
thank you very much for the video. this analog horror is very interesting, i am fascinated by the story. it's also great that all videos are out at once and we don't have to wait to know the whole story.

When the robotic text to speech voice said, “you will be like us,” all I could think of was the Cybermen from Doctor Who.
Where's David Tennant when you need him?
Winter of 83 really deserve more attention, I wish there were fanarts to it because there’s so much potential
Steven isn’t him when he’s hungry
23:04 the person who is voicing the scientist here put their absolute _heart and soul_ into this moment oh my god
There's lots of moments that feel jarring to me due to the differences in how people are acting, how their voice sounds in the recordings, etc.
I think it being silly is *why* it should be more popular, we need some camp horror from time to time !!
@@Bimbofied ong like i'm tired of learning about demons and monsters that will kill me inna second if even 😭😭😭
ah yes a flamethrower, a common tool in small Minnesotan towns...

Thanks for bringing some light to this series!
Oh yeah. Linkara and the teamfourstar crew are actually friends
I love that you talk about some of the horror that I haven't yet got to experience! Your channel is just as underrated, keep up the great work!
It's such a hokey story. It's fun but the acting and sfx are wild.
I can see this channel reaching 100k by the end of the year or even earlier. Great videos, man!
Dr. Chandra looks like the "have you seem this man in your dreams?" Guy
I remember seeing that on tv as a kid. The thought of being Trapped in a storm like that Still haunts me.
I'm sorry but "they're in the snow, they're in the damn snow"... that scientist definitely was in 'nam
I think Chandra being missing for 4 years is a typo. It's probably supposed to be 4 months, to match the amount of time he's been studying the lifeform in the old mansion.
Nope, it's meant to be 4 years. The creator explained it in a comment here already.
I genuinely cant tell why you'd think that was a typo

I already saw this production and just wondered what you thought of it. Nice analysis, thanks 👍🏻
And this is the most underrated channel I've ever seen...
Ha ha thank you I appreciate it!
