Thanks for watching everyone!
This story has three things most modern creepypastas lack: realism, pacing, and restraint. I think that's what makes it legendary, beyond being "the first."
Imagine if creepypastas had restraint. So many good hooks have been wasted for lack of restraint.
My favorite creepy pasta is one simply titled "Autopilot" written by Skarjo. That ones fairly modern (late 2013) and managed to avoid all the lame tropes other creepypastas were doing

Jeff the Killer was my first Creepypasta Character I read about and I love Creepypastas and Jeff
@@katelynthewhitewerewolf6376 Im sorry your first was such a bad one
Most just use basic monsters. I like this didn’t show a monster that if wasn’t perfect quality would ruin the illusion. My brain though makes about terrifying creatures it could be
I thought for sure the dog was gonna get killed for shock value, but no, this creepypasta doesn’t pull anything like that. This is actually a really good story, I love the way it slowly builds up horror and keeps it fairly realistic
I am so glad doggo is safe
Ikr
Ditto. Even though she was fine it infuriated me that they even thought of using her like that!!
THANK YOU I HAVENT WATCHED THE FULL THING YET I CAME TO THE COMMENTS TO SEE IF THE DOG WOULD DIE
same, im so relieved the dog survived @@cxsmic_axtro
The best part about this creepypasta is how it can blend realism and horror perfectly. It never shows the monster or even mentions one, which is what would be the case if this was just a normal caving blog. Its something you rarely see now with creepy internet stories.
The thing about this is it is like 90% a true story. Ted and Brad widening a passage in a dark cave, the photos, the physical sensation Ted felt going through that tight squeeze, it was all based on two real people (and one real dog) in a real cave. A year or so later, Ted adapted their exploration into a story, adding spooky elements and formatting it like a blog and tried to make it seem real, like what The Blair Witch Project had recently done in movie format.
They actually DO mention a monster once, but that's all it was, a mention.
I feel like a lot of Creepypasta writers write with the sole intention of a monster in their mind, and much like a child’s drawing, they want to show people this monster. I’m not saying it’s a good or bad thing, but I do feel that may be the intent behind stories that describe monsters in-depth or extensively.
@@meggnogg "potentially happen in real life" it is actually based on truth! The cave, floyd's tomb, b, the dog and ted are all real. Ted just added horror elements to the happenings
Za waurdo
The pictures of the guy entering Floyd's tomb, as if the cave itself were eating him... always, always, chills. No matter how many years have passed.
Those are real pictures from the author too. Obviously the story is fake, Ted even admitted as such, but the photos were of him of the real spelunking trip that inspired the story.
I have claustrophobia… I hate crawling in small spaces especially, I now know that caving is a horrific nightmare I cannot escape… seeing people in such small spaces left me crying as soon as Ted started going in, I would’ve left but I was curious
Reminds me of coraline in a way with the long small tunnel
There's actually an interesting history behind this. Before making the "Ted the caver" blog, the author Ted and his friend Brad (B) really did go caving together a year or two prior. They did find a small passage, and work on widening it, referring to it as Floyd's Tomb. They even brought the dog down into the cave at one point. And, of course, Ted shared his journal and some photos of the adventure with his family online.
Then, in 2001, Ted has an idea that would leave a permanent impact on the internet. He writes a story in the format of an online journal about the experience he and Brad had, as he had done before to share with his family, but with some changes. It is formatted more for a general audience that may not know about caving, made more educational, and, of course, spoops were added. In the real events, there were no spooky sounds, the dog didn't get scared, and all that was beyond Floyd's Tomb was completely mundane, but in the fictional version, these bits of horror were sprinkled into the story, ultimately with fictional Ted making his final post as he headed back into the cave and an unknown fate. Ted then uploaded this fictionalized version of events as if it were a real blog, and then left it with that final post, occasionally checking the view counter as the story spread via word of mouth.
Then, years later, Ted the Caver was accused of ripping off a short story supposedly written in 1987. The stories were very similar, though the 1987 version was a journal instead of a blog, and had a very different ending. However, internet detectives looked through old foreign copyrights, compared writing styles, and all that jazz and concluded that the 1987 version was a hoax that plagiarized Ted The Caver and backdated it.
There was still some confusion when Ted himself spoke up on the subject, his caving trip with Brad, his inspiration to adapt it into a horror blog like a web1.0 version of The Blair Witch Project, and provided various bits of evidence to prove that he was the original author, as Ted, his friend Brad, and the cave were all based on their real life counterparts (minus the spooky bits).
I like how brad morphed into brian half way through
@@nikitagrishin7310 Ah yeah, I'm bad with names. I double checked Ted's original post on the matter, and his friend's name was Brad. Guess a wire got crossed while typing that out, so I fixed it.
not reading that...
@@theevildrblue1212 you’re missing out on a lot of interesting stuff. don’t be lazy.
@@muckyboys6658 but i dont *waaaannaaaaa!!!!*
We know Ted the Caver isn't a true story; Ted himself has talked to people about it on line since then. He's not trying to hide to keep up the illusion or anything; he's very open about telling people that the monster/spooky stuff is just a story. However, the caving parts are all real, though the process took way longer than the story suggests. Floyd's Tomb is a real place, btw - Ted and B (Brad) came up with the name, and local spelunkers liked it enough that they kept it!
Man, I read this story before "Creepypasta" was a thing, and I still think it's one of the best ones ever made. It's just vague enough about the threat to allow you to easily suspend your disbelief (one of my issues with the movie was that it did NOT do this. At all), which works, given the nature of the story.
Thanks for making this video!
I didn't know it was based on a real cave, although it's fairly clear it was written by a real caver. Thank you for this bit of info!
@@FabricofTime You're welcome! 🙂
I think the story has some parts of the Nutty Putty cave incident too
@@TakumiLucius
Interesting
@@TakumiLucius the Nutty Putty incident happened in 2009. Ted's story was written in 2001. I doubt Nutty Putty inspired the story but thanks to you I have something to research

dude nothing NOTHING will ever be scarier to me than when i was listening to ted the caver for the first time, and my tv had this thing where it would automatically turn off if you hadn't interacted with it within a couple of hours, so it's night i'm listening to this, i'm claustrophobic so i'm squirming and the part where ted goes into the cave and the thing tries to get him is coming and my tv turns off, so i'm sitting in a completly dark room listening unable to move bc it was so creepy,, such an impactful creepypasta tho
Hehehe! This reminds me of something I did xD
One of these days the lights on my whole city block went down during the night. Everything was pitch black. I decided to call my sibling outside to watch the sky, and so we did.
About 2 minutes in, I heard an middle aged man sounding laughter from a house in the distance. Right after that, I said to my sibling: "Shhh! Silence. I heard something"
--"what is it?" My sibling said
I said: "sounds like a man crying"
And we remained in silence to try hearing more.
"Ahhh... now I know why they turned off the lights in the whole town" I said
--"why?"
Then I said "An SCP must have escaped containment!"
My sibling bolted towards the door so fast I didn't even hear them running.
I laughed my ass off in the dark street xD
@@kabardino1337 haha. Your poor sibling
I’m also claustrophobic, I was sobbing the entire time but was to curious to leave
Lol
whats up with everyone listening to creepastas? back in my day we read them
The part where Ted is alone with the creature in the cave is the most unsettling and terrifying things I've read in a while. This whole story is better than any newer creepypastas due to the sheer quality
imagine exploring a cave and you suddenly get a strong sense of deja vu, and only after crawling through a tight entrance in the cave do you see a camera lying on the ground, and realize why the cave seemed so familiar. You used to read this story when you were younger. Rock grinds against rock behind you. Godamnit.
THESE are the Creepypastas I like, realism in a Creepypasta adds more immersion to it. And allows you to put yourself in the characters situation.
Heres a lil like for this good comment.
@@Therespizzafam Thank you, stranger
Literally the only one I ever found compelling.
I cringe anytime someone mentions “Jeff The Killer” as being in any way, shape or form, “good”.
It was the most unintentionally hilariously bad thing I’ve ever read in my life.
@John Jeff the Killer is cathartic in an angsty teen sort of way
@@blue-hawaii-mc4vf I just always think about the Internet Historians “Sundance Rejects”. It kills me every-time and really shows off how insanely silly and ridiculously bad that story is.
the most unbelievable part of this copy pasta is a 2000's era drill's battery life/power
besides the monster and shit this is a 100% real story, floyd's tomb is a real place in a real cave and whip is a real dog (dead now, unfortunately) and they did actual make the hole in real time, they seemed like experienced cavers so i definitely believe they invested in a high-end drill model to open a hole in floyd's tomb
drills are used extensively in cave digging when rock/stalagmite needs breaking you bring usually a minimum of 4 drill battery's if your trips going to involve more than like an hours work with the drill usually however you dont just use drill and hammer to enlarge a passage normally you drill a hole a decent way back from the edge of the rock then use either plug and feathers, blasting caps/nail gun blanks ( capping very dangerous) or proper explosives to break away rock that is preventing you from passing or breaking boulders into smaller rocks that can be then moved/winched out this is much much faster than just drilling/hammering off small pieces in a location with very good air flow diesel drills can also be used but in small confined spaces they are not used as the fumes would build up and kill you
Ted the caver should have a sequel called Ted the bather where he just starts posting to his blog again as acting like nothing happened and like he's just gotten home from the cave expedition and that's been 5 hours to him and he needs to take a bath cuz he's dirty
I'm very tired
So like time flows differently in the cave? And new Ted potentially being an impostor? Sounds kinda cool actually.

Gotta say you’re presentation is really evocative of those early 2010s creepypasta youtubers. Telling the story in your room in front of posters with the incandescent lights. It’s very comfy and nostalgic.
Not to mention that wonderful "number 15" voice we all loath.
This guy's a good storyteller, much like Wendigoon. how have I not discovered this guy sooner?
Awesome video! Ted the caver is one of my favorite stories. Lolking forward to more of your videos!
Thanks so much I love your videos! I actually listened to your narration of this story while making this video and it was outstanding
@@jaybird160 oh wow thank you so much! :)
I just listened to the narration
Genuinely I think this is the best creepypasta that was ever made. It’s the only one that’s ever made my skin crawl
Its so unsettling in the atmosphere it provokes, the way it puts you into that scene, nearly imagining the rocks keeping you pinned, the smell, the darkness, and the alien horror nature of what was there with them the entire time. Horrifying, so horrifying. And furthermore, I like how its written not only like a travel journey catalogue, but also written realistically in a way where the character is trying to get away from the monster, not wait for it so the narrator can give there "it was 7 foot tall, blue eyes, one freckle, 71 teeth!" spiel which is so unrealistic for a real encounter. This one kept you on your toes certainly, until the end when they had to cut the rope after thinking they were free.
I think the thing that makes this one of the best stories is that it makes effective use of the internet in how it tells the story, in a way that doesn't really translate to a print or film medium.
i have never heard this story before. the story itself is very scary and you are good at telling stories. i felt as if you were my friend telling a story of someone you know. excellent narration, thank you for the video.

Ted the caver is the most beautiful scary and dark story I’ve ever read when I first read it two years ago he gave me chills down my spine still does. It’s an amazing story. Honestly, I think they should adapt it into a horror movie.
The sheer fear I feel listening to you tell this story made me cry. I have this fear of caves that is nearly unmatched by any of my other fears.
Such good, visceral horror. "Something has moved the rock and crawled out of the hole and is in the darkness with him."
this video inspired me to do my own abridged telling of ted the caver as if it was a spooky campfire story, to my friends one night. it was a lot of fun, and my friends were entranced. im still fantasizing about one day doing the same thing to my children and their friends around an actual campfire
Beautifully told. Haven’t felt like this since 2012 with those creepy pasta videos as a child. Even felt that spine tingle of fear.
“As a child”.
Man, why does everyone make me feel so damn old?
I had no idea this wasn't from a big channel, Your a natural! Keep up the good work!
I was surprised to see that you're seemingly just starting out on youtube with these videos. They're so well put together and thought out. Excited to see your future content!
Also I absolutely adore Ted the Caver. It's super well done and something about caves just fits so well with horror.
Beautifully told, Jay! Today's creepypastas could learn from this -- hyperrealistic plot lines and natural pacing really help to sell the entire story. Also being aided by (again) an excellent narration. Thanks, man!
The scariest thing in this video was hearing that you only had 35 subscribers when it was made, I’m glad you got the attention you deserve
Plot twist: The monster was actually a person who was trapped in the cave
Ted still gives me the chills to this day! i'm claustrophobic and afraid of the dark, i had nightmares the first time i read through this one. it's such a well done story, the tension is perfectly built and that cliff hanger is such a punch to the gut.
I remember reading this back around 2002 in the desert. Everyone in my squadron was sharing it. Saw it gain popularity again around 2007 I think. Never thought it would have this much traction over the years. Every few years I remember it and realize it's probably long forgotten and not even online anymore. Then it pops up.
The author did a wonderful job writing this.
One thing I do remember from the original was the "Creature". He was talking about having his lights on all the time in his house. One night, he turned too fast as saw something standing in his hallway. He even uploaded a drawing of it. Another thing was the hole. When he saw the rock had moved and looked, he saw old, worn stone stairs leading into the darkness. He popped another glostick and tossed it down, where it disappeared around a corner down the stairs. I think he even mentioned something about he thought the air blowing through was only happening when the "door" was open.
As a long time caver myself who started going when I was around the age of 12, I am SO incredibly thankful that I am only now learning about this story. I already struggle with an overactive imagination (and was in an outdoor program where the leader decided to play movies like The Descent, The Cave, and Sanctum on caving weeks 🙃) so this would’ve stuck deep in my psyche. It’s really an underutilized scenario for horror stories. The activity itself already is a duel psychological and physical challenge, and the environment is steeped in the unknown, ancient, and alien. This story hits on everything I feel like other caving-based horror has lacked, particularly the lack of explanation, open-endedness, and actually accurate descriptions of caving lol. Love the video, thanks for sharing!
Just listening you read the story made me scared, and near the end where they were trying to escape made me cry out of fear.
The story aged so well that even now, it makes you dread and fear what comes next.
Overall 10/10 story love it.
I’ve reread it almost every year since I stumbled upon it in like 2004. I don’t even remember how I found it. But it never gets less creepy. Absolutely golden storytelling.
What I liked most about this creepypasta when I first listened to a reading of it was how "un-creepypasta-like" it was, which I guess for being the "first" creepypasta makes sense. It's not chock full of all the tropes and well trodden ground that so many modern creepypastas have--it actually reads like an earnest original horror as opposed to something setting out to "be a creepypasta" (however one would interpret that). I really liked your reading and analysis of it too!
Was Ted the Caver first or was it Dionaea House? That one was very early too, and it was excellent. EDIT: On further investigation, Dionaea House was a couple years later. Still, something you might consider checking out, it really creeped me out at the time and it's very well written.
I second this! I remember reading it before creepypastas as well. Love the perspectives it gives with relation to the house in the story. Definately a great read!
I agree! Dionaea House would be a great video for this channel!

You are insanely underrated! Ted the caver has got to be one of my favorite horror stories of all time and you definitely did it justice. You should check out the Mystery Flesh Pit National Park! I'd love to watch a video about it from you!
The best part of this story is that you never see what's hunting Ted. But you get enough information to know that its there and is lethal. It pulls on the rope to try to get Ted to fall back into the cave and it always feels like its one step away from catching you. Much better than the horror characters that have lost all their horror because of their almost mascot status
Isn’t the word for cave exploration called spelunking? I love that word, it sounds so silly lol
Edit: I watched the whole video and am no longer in a silly goofy mood 😰
I am no longer in a silly goofy mood either after watching this 😭 😟
This horror story takes advantage of humanities innate fear of the unknown, with the completely unexplored cave, the mysterious sounds and cave painting, and the unseen and undescribed entity seemingly chasing Ted and whatever terrified Joe. Fear of the unknown was something the modern day internet horror story of the backrooms had when it was first concieved, however I feel that fear was ruined a bit when people started creating multiple levels, defining and making multiple different entities and threats as well as the idea of multiple different backrooms survivor groups. This expansion of ideas kinda killed the horror the original idea had I feel. Don’t get me wrong things like that can still be scary but the fear caused by an unknown horror that is left up to your imagination is much scarier than a known horror.
I'm still annoyed by the fact internet turned liminal horror about loneliness and uncanniness into an SCP ripoff with haha funny jokes and generic monsters.
This is the first video I've seen of you, and I can definitely say that I'll watch more! The way you describe everything, and almost try to portray what the characters might be feeling at the moment that you're describing is very entertaining, and you manage to keep the creepy feel of the story all throughout. It's very Wendigoon-esc, and I mean that as a compliment!
Keep it up! :)
Turns out this is actually a documentation of the most recent encounter with Gollum since the lord of the rings. I guess he survived mount doom somehow.
After researching some more, I also found that Ted was wearing his wedding band at the time, and Gollum thought it was the one ring to rule them all. Well, that’s what ring-addiction will do to your Brian kids!
Ahh Ted the Caver, classic, still holds up today, no fangirlisim, no "The Killer" stuff, and your telling of the story was excellent as well! Caving is scary in general, and this story captures it perfectly.

I still remember the raw, visceral fear I felt the first time I read this story years ago. I was a seasoned creepypasta fan by that point, and yet this one scared the shit out of me. I literally left the lights on and couldn’t sleep the night I first read it because the darkness reminded me of a cave and terrified me. Maybe it’s that it’s just realistic enough that it’s not too out there, and that caves are already scary to me. This story is still super scary. I read this creepypasta when I was twelve, and it definitely left an impact on my mind. I think the ominous tone is due to how realistically the story is told. It wasn't overdone like so many other creepypastas. It was nice to revisit it now that I understand it fully (english isn't my first language, so I struggled a bit before)
I tried my hardest to focus on the telling of the story here, but I couldn't help but be distracted by focusing on how often this man blinks in this video.

The segment of B and Ted escaping the cave is one of the most terrifying things I've read. I think I listened to Dark Somnium read it and it was horrifying, the rope being tugged on by an unseen monster is just so good in terms of visuals, especially when they think they're safe outside of the cave.

I just found your channel today and my god I love it. I usually have trouble watching, reading or playing horror my overactive imagination gets me going and I have trouble sleeping. But horror is still my favorite genre. So sum up content like this is very helpful for me in particular. 😅
Shocked at the sub numbers you said at the end. With the audio quality and comprehensive content you covered, I'd have guessed you were sitting comfortable at a few 100k, if not more. So excited to see up and coming talent on the rise!
