That VCR with a component video output was probably a Digital VHS (D-VHS) VCR. The actual video signal recorded onto regular analog VHS tape is composite video. So having an S-Video output on a VCR playing a regular VHS tape just means that the VCR is doing the comb filtering instead of your TV. And depending on the quality of your TV, it may do a better job of it than the VCR, so you might actually get better quality using the VCR's composite output than its S-Video output. (Except when playing Super VHS tapes, in which case the VCR will provide true S-Video quality, because the S-VHS format records S-Video onto the tape.)
I HAVE MY PANASONIC BLU RAY VCR COMBO FROM SEPTEMBER 2009 AND IT WORKS FINE AND I STILL HAVE THE ORIGINAL REMOTE CONTROL AND I CONNECTED IT TO MY TCL ROKU TV.
Blu ray really didn't come out far after VHS died at all. The last major releases on VHS and the first releases on Blu Ray happened the same year, 2006.
That may be true but at least from my experience most people had well given up on VHS by that point. Again though, I guess I'm only speaking from personal experience. I worked at a movie rental store back then and by 2006 we hadn't stocked VHS for a few years.
I've been tossing the idea around. to be completely honest I don't really use it much but its such a unique item I'm not sure if I want to hold onto it or not.
I have that blu-ray /vhs combo unit. It’s my default blu-ray player. I’ve had it since 2009, I think. I bought it new off of amazon. I have the remote too
+The Creepernator it's pretty strange. it's a bit of an odd analogy but I don't really think VHS is seen as "retro" like maybe Laserdiscs are. I think their just seen more as obsolete kind of like 8 tracks in the 90's. 8 tracks now days are starting to have a retro appeal and people I think may be looking for 8 track players. I've even seen those all-in-one record/8 track/cassette/cd/mp3 players. I could imagine this thing being made in the future as a novelty device to cash in on VHS retro fever or somthing but when it did come out it was just odd because as I said I don't think VHS has attained that retro status yet.
Exact opposite with this unit. Yes it upscales but it also has a built in picture correction. Trust me when I say this. When you watch a VHS on this unit via HDMI there is a very noticeable difference in picture quality. No it doesn't look 100% like real 1080p (despite it being output at 1080p) but it definitely look a lot better than what you remember VHS.
Only DVD Recorder Combos have Component out for VHS, some can internally bump the resolution up to 480p as well. I am talking about the consumer level.
The Panasonic DMR-ES45V outputs to HDMI for BOTH DVD and VHS and is a hell of a lot cheaper. It has way more outputs, it is great for connecting older devices to a modern TV’s, it’s also a DVD recorder, and you can control the entire unit without a remote, both the DVD and VHS player
The reason why you haven't seen that many is because they were at the end of its lifecycle. one problem that is particular with this one deck is the fact that, along with it locking features features, mainly manual tracking for the VHS , play pause record fast forward rewind controls in the front they're also extremely expensive. This one was probably made around 2009 or 2011, and they typically retailed for about $1,000. now, most people wouldn't pay $1,000 for a DVD slash blu-ray combo, and most people were already facing out VHS. So most people solution would be to get a separate VHS back, and a dedicated Blu-ray DVD player. you be able to have the play pause record function for VHS, and the front traction control, along with having a dedicated Blu-ray DVD player for way under $1,000. It was just a niche market that was already fading. My VHS/DVD combo has the best of both worlds. It has manual tracking, upacale with hdmi, and pure composite signal so I can capture the best 4:3 signal for converting to digital.
+Zestypanda huh, I was under the initial impression that decks that upconverted VHS to 1080P were pretty rare but I guess more machines did it then I thought. well the whole Blu-ray/VHS thing is still pretty unique.
+Frederick Guese AFAIK most DVD/VHS combo players have component but will only output the VHS signal via s-video at best. I recently read that there are DVD/VHS recorder units that will output the VHS via component but I don't think they upconvert the signal. my DVD/Laserdisc combo machine for instance has component but only if using a DVD. If I want to watch a laserdisc it will only output via s-video or composite.
Does the VHS picture quality actually improve to high definition quality? Even at 720P if not 1080P? I want one for out of print VHS tapes that will likely never be remastered in higher video quality? Thanks
no. If the source material is SD from my understanding there's no way to just make it HD. What's the saying..."garbage in, garbage out" What it does is upscale it so it looks okay on an HD TV.
6:57 Was wondering if you could rip bluray to vhs. Gonna google and see about machines that can but wondering if you might be able to use a universal remote with that.
I'm planning on buying one so my mom can watch either tapes, DVDs, or Blu-Rays on the TV set. I have a pair of DVD recorder/VCR combinations and the one has an integrated ATSC tuner, which died.
My VHS player on this has stopped working. It won’t turn on the VHS part. I do have a remote, and when I select the drive button to switch from VHS to blu Ray, it won’t let me. It says that it’s can not switch because a tape is not inserted. When I try to push the tape in it won’t even take it. Like it doesn’t even register I’m pushing a tape into it.
Mine shuts off after like 30 minutes of playing a DVD or Blu Ray, and I'm not sure why. I'm thinking maybe it has something to do with the Power Saver function or some obscure setting?
They are pretty hard to find and I don't think all that many were made. Best advice I have is scour the piles of DVD and VCR players at Goodwill. Even try Craigslist or services like that. They tend to go for a premium on EBay and I've seen them sell for over $200
There were perhaps only a few thousand produced. It was only on the market for about 1 year. 2009-2010. It was sold at its cheapest for like $155. Now they sell for a high premium on EBay. $400-1,000 depending on the condition. I actually bought one from EBay recently for $479. A very expensive purchase but it was well worth it because I needed to convert 100 VHS home movie tapes to digital for my own personal history. I would only recommend buying it if you can find one for $200-300. Don't over pay like I did unless you absolutely need it.
+DarkLinkAD VHS can be made to look pretty good. especially with upscalers and the like. Honestly as a kid I don't ever remember thinking "man this looks like crap, its barely watchable, I cant wait till somone invents some sort of high resolution disc format". It's only now when we compare it to HD format media that we start thinking it wasn't so hot.
Yes, your right, that was a mistake, you can output 1080p over component. Most of the component inputs on HDCRT's though that I've come across are also labeled as only accepting 720P and 1080i and many of those early HD devices that output via component seems restricted to 1080i max. I think the Xbox 360 did 1080P over component.
well, its not manufactured anymore so the secondhand market is basically the only place to find it. EBay, would be the easiest but priciest route. other then that you could luck out and find one at a Goodwill/thrift or yard sale.
I had no idea it was worth anything when I picked it up. I actually almost passed it up cause I thought $20 was a little pricy. Glad I grabbed it though. I actually don't use it much so I always think about selling it off but its so unique I always just end up deciding to keep it. I did use it recently to transfer some home movies from VHS to digital.
Also a Logitech Harmony 650 remote that controls up to 5 devices usually works with the VHS / DVD or Blu ray combos as they are still relatively new units (i.e. 10 years old or so) so purchasing 2nd hand without a remote is not a problem. I just checked the DMP-BD70V in the database and its catered for. I recently scored a LG RC389H VHS DVD writer combo from a local recycle centre for $20. It has HDMI out to upscale VHS tape really well and so looks considerably better than s-video out. Also because my unit is one of the last VHS players, when I took the top off to clean the internals and heads it was pretty much immaculate inside as the VHS feature only had little use as most of the time DVD was used. The fact these units were during a technological cross over period and were catering to people that still had some VHS tapes but preferred newer DVD technology, they generally have relatively little VHS use and in good condition. Also with a healthy VHS tape collecting scene developing (e.g. FB VHS tape collector groups etc) all these units with HDMI out, and especially with writer capabilities, are starting to increase in value.
good question. I have no idea. I suppose if a shop worked on VHS/DVD combo players or still bothered repairing VHS players and also did bluray separately it wouldn't be to diffrent
Goodwill, they don't know any better. to them, it was just one of the tons of VHS combo players they get in every other day. They've got smart to some things like older video games and consoles depending on the manager at the moment and they likely price check stuff like that but anything that looks like a VCR and even DVD/Blu-ray players these days just get a $19.99 sticker and thrown on the shelf.
I have just get my home from ebay (used) it is great, but when i plays whs it is only black/white colors but the dvd/blueray works Great on the tv. Okay I can see DVD VHS combos I can see DVD and HDD combos and even see VHS and HDD combos but wtf a Blu Ray and VHS what like that makes now since unless it's a DVHS but still why should have been Blu Ray HDD combo this is weird.
It was produced for the last of the last hold outs who refused to upgraded to the digital age. I believe Panasonic made it to convince those who still has VHS but perhaps were curious to try out DVD and Blu Ray. That way you were able to have everything in one unit.
hi 1080 recording in a computer can be done. you have to go back sometime and use a mix of new and old software and video cards i use old pci asus tv card they have the old phono sockets and the new hd tv software editing sony vegas 14 the new hd cards use alot of space and my monitor doe's not like them. because it SD at 1600x1200 why buy a new one i am just saying
na, that's just someone price gouging and shooting for the moon. seems to sell more around the $400 price point...which makes me kind of tempted to sell mine.
Don't be to sad about it. It works the other way as well. There are a lot of Master System and genesis/mega drive collectors that would love to get there hands on stuff from Brazil.
I know I should not be sad because I can not get one of these gadgets, but they're so cool that it's hard not to be hahahahaha: '(.) There are many collectors who want to get these Sega consoles and for a reasonable price xD
Yup you should always use S-video output for best quality image. And let's not forget a quality S-video cable, cheap ones cause inteference, also nothing longer than 5 m
I had two of those players and i have to say that besides being cool and unique it was nothing special. Couldnt do netflix, couldnt record since its only player and at that time they could have used SVHS instead of regular VHS with SQPB feature. I would expect a vcr from 2009 would be best technology at the time and have SVHS ET not just regular VHS. Again it was ok unit but it didnt meet expectation
This is great. What we really need is a VHS/DVD/BLU-RAY/LASER DISC/CED-DISC/BETAMAX COMBO PLAYER!
That would never happen. Unfortunately, it seems like physical media is being replaced these days T-T
But she'll never die, I'm sure about it
Video Master Indeed!
Video Master that will be cool
Add Muse LaserDisc and DVHS as well.

i still have a really old Panasonic VCR the good thing is its still running
I've got a Panasonic VCR from 2002 myself.
Wow that pretty cool, I never seen a VHS and a blurayplayer together.
The last standalone VCR and HD-DVD player was manufactured during 2008. Sony introduced the first Ultra 4K TV and Blu-Ray player four years later.
The Panasonic DMR-ES40V is a VHS/DVD recorder combo which has component output that DOES output the VHS. I have used it many times.
I HAVE MY PANASONIC BLU RAY VCR COMBO FROM SEPTEMBER 2009 AND IT WORKS FINE AND I STILL HAVE THE ORIGINAL REMOTE CONTROL AND I CONNECTED IT TO MY TCL ROKU TV.

Is the Blu-Ray section of this player compatible with DVD as well?
Jacob Carpenter yes it is. are there any Blu-ray players that cant play DVD's?
0blivi0n100 Cool.
Okay I can see DVD VHS combos I can see DVD and HDD combos and even see VHS and HDD combos but wtf a Blu Ray and VHS what like that makes now since unless it's a DVHS but still why should have been Blu Ray HDD combo this is weird.
Skip to about 4:00 minutes in.... your welcome
Too bad they are impossible to find....
this is strange by the time bluray came out i though vhs was dead or almost dead not shore why they made this
It was produced for the last of the last hold outs who refused to upgraded to the digital age. I believe Panasonic made it to convince those who still has VHS but perhaps were curious to try out DVD and Blu Ray. That way you were able to have everything in one unit.
Blu Ray came out in 2006 and the last of the VHS shipments and operating record website operated within 2008 when it halted production and died.
You can always get some universal remote controller
+Arthur Samuel Rowan that's a good point
+0blivi0n100 what year is the Panasonic DMP-BD70V Blu-Ray / VHS player?
+0blivi0n100 Many Android phones can do IR too these days
+Raphyopenings100 TJTF TSAS POE EDCP AVGCP AUTTP to the best of my knowledge 2009
+Arthur Samuel Rowan at least 90% of the universal remotes are only made for tv
5:30 to see the backside of unit. This fella gets a little longwinded...
hi 1080 recording in a computer can be done. you have to go back sometime and use a mix of new and old software and video

i am just saying
Dude 20 bucks you are so lucky it goes for like 500 to 2000 dollars on the web
Jesus Christ that this is 3,ooo $ fucking bucks on ebay...cool idea though...
na, that's just someone price gouging and shooting for the moon. seems to sell more around the $400 price point...which makes me kind of tempted to sell mine.
Send me a link if you decide... would like to see the original, unchanged, VHS of Star Wars a New Hope in "near" HD...
My vcr has hdmi Toshiba DVR600
I want one for myself, but I can not have it because Brazil is so far ... could someone send it to me? Hahaha (seriously xD)
Don't be to sad about it. It works the other way as well. There are a lot of Master System and genesis/mega drive collectors that would love to get there hands on stuff from Brazil.
I know I should not be sad because I can not get one of these gadgets, but they're so cool that it's hard not to be hahahahaha: '(.) There are many collectors who want to get these Sega consoles and for a reasonable price xD
hey, I signed up for your channel ^^, subscriber number 971
Yup you should always use S-video output for best quality image. And let's not forget a quality S-video cable, cheap ones cause inteference, also nothing longer than 5 m
I had two of those players and i have to say that besides being cool and unique it was nothing special. Couldnt do netflix, couldnt record since its only player and at that time they could have used SVHS instead of regular VHS with SQPB feature. I would expect a vcr from 2009 would be best technology at the time and have SVHS ET not just regular VHS. Again it was ok unit but it didnt meet expectation
very cool! And, look on ebay, worth some moola!
its a rare model
combo player
Get a universal remote
s-video looks better than the combo
to bad people are asking for 1000's of dollars now these days...
I think they are neat but certainly not worth anything close to that much.
