I knew about the Bosman ruling beforehand through a few other videos but you are the first one to actually place some focus on Bosman himself and how his life fell apart because of a ruling that made players' lives better. I just wish something can be done about his situation now.
Yeah I think this is so ironic & shocking...
As you've stated in the video the Bosman Ruling completely destroyed my favorite club: Ajax Amsterdam.
The year the Bosman ruling came through (1995) Ajax was the best club in the world, but nearly all of the players in that squad left the club for free in the years after that succes. It was heartbreaking to watch as a fan. The best club in the world was being gutted.
It wasn't until a couple of years ago (so more than 30 years later) that Ajax had any significance in Europe again but such a thing can only happen once every so often, because after every season the best players are being bought by the richer clubs and Ajax has to start building a new team with "lesser" players of which they hope to become the next super players that can be sold. The record is now about 50/50, but the 50% that is being sold do make an overal profit over the once that don't.
So for Ajax to become the best team in the world again requires a lot of luck and even then all the best players will be bought by other clubs which have much more money to spend anyway.
So knowing this inevitable cycle, Ajax now tries to at least "bother" the richest clubs in Europe and tries to be the best of the rest and that will be the best case scenario, because the broadcasting rights for the Dutch league will never come close to that of bigger countries.
At the moment any Premier League club gets €98 mil per season of broadcasting rights money. Ajax gets €9.3 mil... As long as this gap remains in place Ajax will never be a global superpower again and as you state in your video: neither will any other club that's not in the top 5 leagues of Europe.
Looking at it through that lens Ajax is currently doing alright, but a global superpower? Never going to happen in the current setup.
Edit: Typo's and more background info.
Well said!!!
Quite possibly the most famous bang average player of all time. Props to him!
Good description hahah!
someone surely needs to help Bosman with at least one week wage. That would mean so much to him and that would be really good move by some player.
Yeah exactly 👌
Hello, in a recent interview with belgian press Bosman said he receives 2000€/month from Fifpro. He also received 10k€ from the mother of Rabiot when he signed his contract at PSG in 2013

Hoping all the best to your channel too
This ruling definitely changed the context in which great players are determined. Back in the day, there were no super teams, as teams that were rich couldn’t have more than a few foreigners. Imagine Cruyff, Maradona, Hugo Sánchez, Romario (in his prime), Baggio (in his prime) playing on today’s rich teams… or the opposite, Messi, Cristiano, Neymar… playing back in those times where they couldn’t have been surrounded by $800,000 on the pitch.
This ruling, I believe, also changed the game as teams have to focus on defending with more players and destroying these powerful team’s offense than actually going toe to toe, and make the game pretty boring.
It became an unfair and predictable, game, we always see the same champions in every league, Madrid, Barça, Bayern, Juventus, PSG.
And the worst part… as teams might have gotten a larger worldwide audience, I believe they also lost their local identity.
Another thing, the crazy wages left other continents without a chance to hold their talents. Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay can’t keep the talent in their land for long, as players want to run to the old continent to get that big paycheck… regardless of losing their football mystic… it’s been a longtime since Brasil displayed Jogo Bonito as they seem to play the European way now… no wonder they haven’t been in a world final since 1998.
Thanks for sharing this video and open up a debate!
Cheers from Mexico!
You say that bcos you a fan. If you're a football player, you will thank bosman for his contribution lol
Real talk
I am proud I already knew the story
Same
Legend 😎
i read about this from a local football account first. i cant believe i have lived 19 years, and only 2 people make a post about Bosman ruling. thank you to that local football account and Fiago.
:D
In Allsvenskan (Swedish top division) at least half of the players in the match squad must be "home fostered". Meaning that the player has been registered at a swedish club during at least 3 years between they were 12 and 21 years old. So maximum 9 "foreign" players in a match squad. No limitation for foreign players in the general squad though, nor in the starting eleven.
So i was surprised to hear about the EU rule of unlimited foreign players :)
One of tHe few systems to still respect footnall
For me the only nice thing about the rule is the globalization and that teams can have unlimited foreign players. In the other hand it has really destroyed the beauty of the game. Created by the poor,Stollen by the rich
That makes sense yeah
The biggest villain in football history. That man single handedly killed the game and made it super uncompetitive with only a select few able to compete for the big prizes.
In other hand it also doesn't make sense if the club can hold the player as much as they want till they got what they wanted.
Bosman rule has improved Rather then degrading
In the start of this rulling Some teams took a lot advantage that these players were free out of no where. That is why a small club like Lierse became champion in Belgium in 1997.(ofc this wasn’t the only reason) Now the big clubs get a lot of advantage because the players started to understand the wages
I had heard about bosman while playing Football manager but never knew the story of him. Great vid. And can u make a video on brekit because honestly i don't understand how will this effect the PL
Oh he's mentioned in FM?
@@Fiago Yeah when u buy a player for free and then look at his stats there it will show BOS. and if u pay transfer fee then it will show the fee paid
He Did A Great Job For Football But The Limit On Foreign Players Should Be Reduced So That More Local And Academy Players Will Get Their Chance
You need just to be more loud. Except of that channel is really good 🔥
Okay I’ll turn up the volume in the next videos 🤝 thanks man
I had his card in my 1990 panini album :D...
Nice 😂
Adrien Rabiot gave him like €10k after he moved transfer free to Juventus
Great story, but what a sad denouement for Bosman.
Muller would of said, yk how football became rich bcz of a guy called Bossman yk bcz he is boss.
Get it?
@@Fiago 😂😂😂
He would probably say it like: You know, it's all because of a guy called BOSSman, you know Marc BOSSman
Great video Bos(s)man
Keep up the great content bro.
That’s the plan thanks for the support bro 👊
People talk about Bosman like he's a hero? Maybe to mega rich footballers & their greedy agents. To others he's the prick who created a monster that ruined a lot of clubs & put them out of business.
👏 👏 👏
He is a motherf*cker son of a b**** who destroyed the beauty of this game. Football became so boring since then.
Keep up! Legend
Will do man!! Thanks
@@Fiago I know it's hard because if the long editing and Insta work, but could you upload more frequently? I'm loving the content!
@@kalindinchev5697 For now it will probably be a video every Sunday but I‘m focusing more & more on RUclips if I see you guys are enjoying it and can definitely imagine more videos in the future 🤟
Great video man, also could you site some of your sources since I'm trying to do a bit more research into this topic for a school project.
Also what are some other events that changed the football market that are interesting to have a look at?
Why this video only have 4K views. Quality content and very educative
I would say that this case was bad for football because players nowadays play for the money rather than the game
Yeah, but after all it's a job like any other...
Yeah you are kinda right there and I guess the wages are consistent with what players in other sports receive e.g NBA. What the worse part about it is are the ridiculous prices paid for transfers!
Not a very loyal player, back in the days Liège fc-Standard Liège was a very good derby 😅. Now Liège fc plays in 4th division tho.
Yeah, City Derby 🔥
This is the equivalent of Senna and Ratzenberger being deleted at 1994 San Marino Grand Prix changing Formula 1 forever. Both F1 & football today look nothing like they did in 1994-95.
The Man who sold Football
The ruling was obviously good for the players as workers, those transfer restrictions should never have been like that to begin with.
Fiago please cover the topic of qualification of Asian countries for the world cup. There are many interesting teams who compete there. plz make a video on it
When does career mode come back fiago?
Fiago what do you think of the new CONCACAF champions league format?
While I am not completely ruling out the impact of Bosman Ruling, most of the examples presented in the video were rather natural progressions that would have happened regardless of it because of the rapid rate in which all parts of life were becoming more and more expensive
The ruling which destroyed European football
What a channel
Thanks man!!
Can u talk about the Munich accident and it effects
Yep I will, that’s on my video list already
Fiago,do you think brexit may have any effect on Bosman ruling in premier league???
Not on the Bosman Ruling itself, but of course the EU citizen part doesn‘t matter for the Prem anymore since the UK left. So less international players will move there in the next decade, especially regarding youngsters. Could hurt the Prem
Top clubs in the Premier League have hardly any Britlanders any more ...
So he's like the footy version of Curt Flood?
I have no idea who Curt Flood is, do you mind explaining? 😅
@@Fiago He was a baseball player in the 60s. He played for the St. Louis Cardinals, and was one of their best players. He felt he wasn't getting paid enough, his team wasn't happy about the news, so he got traded to another but refused the trade because he wanted to be able to have a say in what team he could sign a contract with, it resulted in a massive lawsuit. It paved the way to modern free agency as we know it today in American sports. Here's a video about him. ruclips.net/video/0jKly6z1Z5s/видео.html
@@Fiago Also like Bosman, he was blacklisted by teams afterwards.
🙌🏻👏🏻👏🏻
When’re we getting the next episode of career mode?
News abt the HSV career mode?
hey como crees que seria el futbol actual sin esa ley bosman?
Major League Soccer operates like this for non-Designated Players if they wish to stay in MLS.
Knew who he was
Bosman ruling, is it only within EU? What about South America, Asia and Africa?
yes its only EU. That is why the European leagues have all the quality players
This was actually the destruction of football.
F**k ESL
I think this guy did a good thing, but He should’ve knewn it was comung...like he took the clubs rights away... what did he expect, every club to want him?
first
Congrats
