Do Chris Bosh's blood clots. People have said that he could die if he played NBA basketball again, and I was just curious as to exactly how that works and if that is true. I wish he could play again, as I'm sure teams would love a 6'11" PF who can shoot.
Armando Sanchez Yeah don't be urging him to play. He's got a lot of heart and he might try to come back if people get in his head. But it's not worth it. He's got a family
It's a risk of bleeding, not a risk of getting a clot. The meds to prevent clots make your blood thin and so a more simple injury could become life threatening . It's s topic I've thought about for a video

I had a minor disc protrusion L5-S1 4 years ago. I experienced the most excruciating pain ever and was once crippled for 3 days because of it. I stayed in bed until I was able to slowly walk. It was horrible. I Iost hope. I had anxiety because of it. I was able to recover by doing a personal research on how to avoid and how to heal from minor disc problems. Proper body mechanics, proper sleeping position, proper lifting, avoiding the positions that will aggravate the protrusion of the disc, all these will increase your chances of healing as time goes by. Now I'm working on a more active job. Its sad because i'm supposed to be a computer programmer but I'm avoiding to sit and stay in one position for a long time but life must go on for the better. I got rid of all the pain but I'm not 100% recovered. They said once you have this problem there is no going back but I'm able to live now without any sciatic nerve pain so I'm happy and I'm proud of my recovery.
I’ve got an L5 compression fracture. I know the excruciating pain you speak of well. I went to a chiropractor as a last resort before surgery. A friend claimed the chiro saved his life. I was skeptical to say the least. Five years later and I’m pain free. I see him once a month and perform stretches that he recommended daily. I understand the doubts that people have towards alternative medicine in the U.S., but it can be a lifesaver. People who have never had crippling back pain have absolutely no idea how bad it is. I couldn’t get out of bed for weeks at a time.
I think what scared teams off was that he needed a second microdiscectomy right after the draft. Plus with the hip spasms in some of his pre draft workouts, teams wanted to take the safe bet (although it seems like the hip issue was also tied to his back). The Nuggets were in the position that they didn't need anyone to immediately contribute this year, so they could afford the risk. It's starting to look more and more like they made the right choice.
Thank you for explaining this! Many people online seem to think they are an expert on his injury. As someone who had the same surgery I know you can come back from it. He unlike the average person has access to the best doctors and resources to help him heal and get stronger. He’s going to be great!! If not one of his million other siblings will be in the NBA. Take that haters.
Excellent overview, I had spine surgery on L2, L3, L4. I did a lot of research, this is one of the best, most understandable overviews I’ve heard, thanks for sharing the info. Hope Michael has a great career, seems like a good kid.
Ive binged watched your videos and got to say these are amazing. Truly teaches me a lot and you are so good at explaining this stuff to the average person. Keep it coming doc. I would like to see a video on Steph Curry. Like why is he so susceptible to ankle sprains? Is it bad luck or is it something specific? I always believed that Steph curry never really developed a dunking or finishing above the rim game because of fear of damaging his ankles. Do you think so? Also is he fully healed now or is he still more susceptible to this injury than other players?
I think he did a video about ankle sprains and the different kinds. I'd guess that it's a few reasons like the history of sprains, genetics, and less than ideal mechanics. His below the rim play is mostly because he's an average athlete who is fairly small with very bad length for an NBA player (which is also part of the reason he's a liability on defense). That's just not really a part of his game and I don't think it ever would be. He'll likely struggle for the remainder of his career with ankle issues and I'd bet he averages about 60-70 regular season games per year barring any major setbacks.
Hey Brian, just wanna day that these videos are awesome and help me as a sports science student to expand my knowledge of injuries and what the look like in real time, thanks so much and keep it up

Hey Dr. Brian so I was watching your Neymar injury vid. Later after that I went out and played soccer and ended up getting a Jones fracture. Ironic. Anyways keep up the good work. Really enjoying your analysis and passion.
Hey Doc. Thanks for doing these videos and giving us a better understanding of these injuries athletes suffer throughout careers. I am really curious about MPJs back injury. He has gone through 3 back surgeries now with the last one coming close to a year ago. He has been looking great but the last game against Portland he apparently had back spasms. On a put back lay up at the end of the 2nd quarter against Nurkic seemed like a time he started looking a little uncomfortable while running back on Defense. I would love to know what you think about this injury. According to the Nuggets he is fine and they sat him for injury management. Again thank you for the content!
He needs to play at least one or two games before the season ends but I think if he actually starts his season next year it would probably be the better option
I don't think it will mean him much if he plays 2 games this season, however if he starts the next season, he will technically be a rookie, so he'll have a chance to win ROTY (like Ben Simmons did).
I followed his HS career and thought he was gonna be the number 1 pick. Then I did anticipate his first college season but disappointed when he announced about the surgery. Sucks to see him go through this way.
Love your channel! Could you do a video explaining the difference between this kind of back injury and what Joel Embiid suffered in college? I think that was a stress fracture in his back?
I have suffered with chronic back pain for years, I manage it by taking at night, before sleeping, fish oil, glucosamine and chondroitin supplements.... however, one item I have found that is a nonnegotiable, and which I must do, BEFORE going to sleep, is stretching my back at night, especially stretching my lower back out, I will wake up the next day, with no pain... what does the stretching do to alleviate the back pain ? It's not hard to imagine, that stretching out the physical hardware, would help alleviate some tension and stress on the discs, but stretching takes care of my pain, I don't have any, if I stretch at night, before I go to sleep
I’m looking at this now because his back is acting up currently. He tweaked it recently . I love playing basketball and I have lower back pains I’m trying to manage myself- so I emphasize with him. I hope his back doesn’t rob him of a promising career. But it’s not looking good

Ryan Shazier’s career-ending injury has been requested multiple times, and you’ve said you’ll do a video on it, yet it seems you’re ignoring it? Love your videos man keep it up!
Not ignoring it . Filmed a batch of vids a while back and this was one of those. Ppl request way more than I can feasibly do while working a job. There also isn't an abundance of info on his injury so it's a little tough to just sit and do one. I want to make it good.
Brian Sutterer MD I never stated that you were ignoring it, only just questioning it. Take your time on it! The injury is definitely a bit mysterious as not a lot of people like me quite understand it. I was just wondering what the status of your video on it was. Loved this video like I do with your other vids. Keep it up and you finna get the recognition you deserve soon bro!
So it’s your opinion that he should be fully healed at this point, a full 6 months out from the last surgery. What would be the reason he isn’t playing yet? Is there a point where it just won’t get any better than it is or are there still small improvements he could be making with it? Thanks for informative video.
Imo it has to do with him sitting out for 6 months and is not in basketball shape. He needs to get his body back into peak nba condition, or he can suffer different injuries if his body is not ready. He is practicing with the team with full contact for portions. But that is much different than a full on nba game. Tldr; He just needs to get his strength and conditioning back up, and into basketball shape or risk other injuries before playing.
Hi, Doctor! I love your videos. I have back and neck pain, I did MRI ,the inpression showed CT Spine Cervica: Vertebral bodies and posterior elements are intact without acute fracture. Mild degenerative change versus limbus vertebra within the anterior aspect of the C5 superior endplate. Punctate anterior longitudinal ligament calcification versus small endplate osteophyte at the anterior aspect of C2. MRI Spine Lumbar:L1-L2: Circumferential disc bulge which minimally indents the ventral thecal sac L5-S1: Bilateral spondylolysis without significant spondylolisthesis. Mild facet arthropathy. No significant spinal canal or foraminal stenosis. Can you explain this for me ,really appreciate !
Why do you think simple daily decompression exercises and stretches didn’t work for him? I don’t know if you’ve ever talked to him lol but I would think he would’ve tried them at some points and it would’ve helped.

So can he lift heavy weights on his back or is it dangerous for him to do so?
What about if his disc was degenerated?… would that change anything in terms of ability? Would it be a bigger concern??
As someone who has herniated 3 discs in his lower back, I can say there is no getting back to "normal" or 100%. That injury will stay with you.
Watching this made my back hurt.
dallas mavericks recently acquired kristaps..can you do a video about his injury and how its going fare moving forward?
Do you know what’s his 3rd surgery now? Will he able to play again?
Great video
Please do Zach Miller’s injury. It is interesting.
Whats up doc! Do you think Porter has the same injury today?
thanks Brian..
Thanks Doc
Who came here after he made 19pts on his nba start
me lol
Thank you!!
Hi, Doctor! I love your videos. I have back and neck pain, I did MRI ,the inpression showed
CT Spine Cervica: Vertebral bodies and posterior elements are intact without acute
fracture. Mild degenerative change versus limbus vertebra within the anterior
aspect of the C5 superior endplate. Punctate anterior longitudinal ligament
calcification versus small endplate osteophyte at the anterior aspect of C2.
MRI Spine Lumbar:L1-L2: Circumferential disc bulge which minimally indents the ventral thecal sac
L5-S1: Bilateral spondylolysis without significant spondylolisthesis. Mild facet
arthropathy. No significant spinal canal or foraminal stenosis.
Can you explain this for me ,really appreciate !
I know this isn’t a pro sports injury but what about Kevin Ware from Louisville’s horrifying compound leg fracture in the 2013 Elite 8?
Why do you think simple daily decompression exercises and stretches didn’t work for him? I don’t know if you’ve ever talked to him lol but I would think he would’ve tried them at some points and it would’ve helped.
