Another famous director of anime is Mamoru Hosoda who has made several important films. The most recent of his films was Belle (2021) that received a 14-minute standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival. He also made the 2012 Wolf Children and the 2006 The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. Any one of these would be good to see in a reaction.
A Silent Voice is simply great. I love the elements they use to show depression, deafness and bullying, be it the X-faces, the partial muteness, the rather quiet music with clear tones, the blurry foggy scenes and the editing between scenes with reversed roles. It's a very human story with many characters in which no one is perfect. However, I can recommend the manga, as many elements are missing. A story that could have been told in 12 to 24 episodes has been shortened to one movie. The content was cut at the beginning, which means that the reasons why Ishida started bullying Nishimiya are not clear. What other characters have done, especially Miki Kawai, is also neglected. In general, since we don't get Miki's thoughts and her point of view, her diabolical selfishness just doesn't come across in the movie. It's exactly the opposite with Ueno. Because we get less of her, her actions only seem malicious instead of desperate. And Satoshi (red-hair guy) didn't get his story arc adapted. What I also really like about the manga is that when we get scenes from Nishimiya's point of view, the text is cut off and you can only read the bottom half and almost have to guess what has been said. It's a really nice element to express deafness and lip reading.
Wolf Children may be an appropriate recommendation. Really enjoyed stumbling upon your channel for the Your Name and A Silent Voice reactions. Keep it up!
Thank you Matthew. I Want To Eat Your Pancreas, Wolf Children, and Grave Of The Fireflies are going to all be heavily considered over the coming weeks. Depending on scheduling, they may even end up on a poll that can be voted on through Patron. Thanks for your comment!
That line Ueno said to Nishimiya, "you're not going to really try to talk to me," is quite interesting. In other shows, she might just be relegated to a typical villain role, but in this "Voice" themed story, she serves as an important character. recommend: - In This Corner of the World - Liz and the Blue Bird (Same director and studio as "A Silent Voice") - Wolf Children
I just feel like Ueno's resentment towards Nishimiya is quite justified (not like I support bullying). It's more reasonable in depth when the manga discusses that Takeuchi (the teacher) purposely made Nishimiya sit across Ueno so that she could assist Nishimiya and pretty much pitch Takeuchi's responsibility as a teacher to his student despite being the same age. Ueno also wasn't even mean to her at first as shown in the movie, going as far as assisting Nishimiya in notes. But because of this, Ueno's grades lowered due to the loss of focus (again, because the teacher is avoiding his responsibilities). Additionally, Ueno had a crush on Ishida when they were kids (and I think this goes on until Ishida woke up, as why Ueno was the one always looking after him in the hospital). I find Ueno's character relatable as it is actually difficult to like something you have resented for a reason, no matter what reason that may be. It's not like she wasn't guilty, it's just that she is having a hard time and she believes change is not something that is possible. It is subjective after all. I wouldn't expect people or even myself to change when I said to. It's difficult and most of the time, even impossible. Ueno's demands for Nishimiya on just hating each other but being on good terms is very rational in my perspective (it's just Ueno thought Nishimiya hated her/them that bullied her). I'd bet my money more on that compromise than to expect change. Getting along would seem bold and impossible. Ueno's character boils down to being self aware (to a degree) of her own flaws yet being unable to admit it. Wishing to change yet being hesitant to believe such a thing is possible, for me, is quite reasonable. Plus let's not forget they're still teenagers after all. What happened back then in their 6th grade still lingers on her mind. In a sense, she hasn't grown out of it yet (to why does she wish for Ishida to have his group of friends back). Teens (like myself) are still quite sensitive and are still having troubles making mature and sensible decisions.
This was such a delight! A Silent Voice means a great deal to me and I love to revisit it a least once a year. The sensitivity and care over each character makes this a highly emotional experience. I have always appreciated and loved the more ‘difficult’ personalities in stories so this film really speaks to me. I got such a kick out of you saying that the bridge scene with all the kids seemed like a play because for me I jive with those kinda scenes soo much! Although, while I would say the story really does work as a film. I do think it suffers a little by not being able to fully adapt the source material. Not too much! But just enough for me to notice and think “ah would be nice to have a lil more time with this world and characters” Also Kyoto Animation (KyoAni) are just absolutely elite as a studio who you can always trust with pure magic in anime. Just knowing that they truly are the outlier of animation studios that genuinely care for their staff… it makes the world of difference.

also at 17:12 the reason he says "The Moon" and fumbles like an idiot is cause the Japanese words are really similar and due to Shoko slight sluring it sounded off. Just wanted to clear that up. Also also, this movie isn't a romance movie, it's a movie about loving yourself and who you are.
You’re the first person I’ve seen say ‘ueno is constantly coming up against herself’ most people hate her guts (rightly) as I did when I first watched it. But the line she says to nishiyas mum ‘don’t have kids if you can’t take care of them’ I feel like ueno is mad that likely her own mother likely doesn’t care about her and is expressing some of her own resentment and anger towards nishimiyas mum in this moment. Uni physically attacking both nishimiya and her mother is coming from somewhere else
the sad part is...that this is all the fault of that terrible teatcher.... he left for the kids to take care of shoko, he didnt adapt his class for her, he didnt learn sign language, he didnt wrote on the blackboard what he was saying for her, he ignored signs of bullying, and he, in fact, bullied his students himself (like the way he talks to ueno) that guys is a terrible teatcher and have he made some little effort none of this would have happened, these kids would have grown up with happy lives.... it is like mr miagy said, and i take this particular teatching to my life "thre is no such thing as a bad student, only a bad teatcher" as someone who likes to help with the education of my lil brothers and sister, as well as try to be helpful when i see children in it, that teatcher feels like a personal atack to my own morals... a man lik ethat should never have had the right to be an educator...

Recommendations wise (sorry if I have missed you saying that you have watched these already) you gotta experience some Satoshi Kon. Particularly his debut ‘Perfect Blue’.
Yes, I have seen Perfect Blue and Paprika, but both were so long ago that I would treat it as a 'first time watch' because I remember nothing only that they were incredibly cerebral and intense, for different reasons of course.
I have a request, I would love if you react to the anime “Happy Sugar Life”.. It’s only 12 episodes and I think you have the sensibility to understand and love it. If you watch it you should not search anything about it, because it’s easy to spoiler and a lot of people did not understand what it’s about so you might get confused. I can tell you it’s a very deep and bittersweet story and it will hit hard :)
Okay, firstly, I would say read the manga. You miss a ton of context to the story. While the movie is great, it really does a horrible job at representing the characters and their actions.
