- Lieutenants Ken Taylor and George Welch were sleeping after a night of partying in the early hours to be given the worst alarm call one can imagine - The Japanese attacking Pearl Harbor. The 2 young men sprang into action and headed for Haliewa, still in their tuxedo trousers and jumped into their Curtiss P-40 Tomahawks. Despite officers telling them to step down they took off and took the fight to the Japanese. Taylor and Welch were immediately outnumbered but the 2 men showed amazing courage and strength in the battle. An incredible tail of 2 young men against all odds, taking on the Japanese airborne attack.

Denied Medal of Honor for attacking the enemy without orders... For crying out loud, who in their mind would wait for orders in a situation like that?! Especially given the possibility that the orders might never materialize.

In a surprise attack they still get denied the medal of honor for defending their fellow countrymen and country ? Even back then the government was all sorts of jacked up, I firmly believe that both Taylor and Welch should have been awarded the medal of honor they went above and beyond the call of duty not once but twice
Somebody get their story to Sabaton, we can get them something better than a medal.

At the time of his death, Kenneth Welch was the chief test pilot for North American Aviation. What was not mentioned was that he died at the controls of an early production version of the F100 Super Saber, the first of the USAF's "Century Fighters".
Thanks for this I was curious as to why such an experienced pilot would be trying such a high g manoeuvre assuming it would be too much for the aircraft to handle. I was going to do some reading later but if it’s a test version now it all makes sense. Sounds like one hell of an aviator
@@jeddllau I'd say more of a mix of the G's and the speed than just the speed lol. 7Gs at 'normal' flight speeds for a WWII aircraft is probably somewhat less straining on the airframe than 7Gs at Mach 1.1 lol.

@@kristoffermangila I know. I'm saying that I think the strain of the airframe pulling the same Gs at different speeds is bigger the higher the speed. 400MPH is quite different to 750+
My mom's 3 uncles were at pearl harbor that day. They were triplets. One was in the Army,another in the Marines and the youngest was a sailor aboard the Uss.Arizona and was on board when she went up.
The oldest was the marine. He wasn't injured that day would later go to fight at Guadalcanal, tawara,tawara, iwo jima and many others major battles until losing half his stomach on Okinawa to a Japanese grenade. The brother in the Army was wounded strafe with by a zero or a Val. He was never sure. Missed out on the first 6 months of the war then was part of the army detachment sent to Guadalcanal. Lol he literally spent the pacific war tagging behind his brother. Until Okinawa they both landed and fought at the same time. I'm proud to.have them as relatives. My dad's side fought in the European theater.

Funny that , my grandad lost half his stomach to a Japanese bayonet in Burma! Used to chase us kid's around baring his scared tummy while shouting how he was "shot with a knife!" Your comment made me think of him cheers

One wonders about officers who see their bases destroyed by easily identifiable enemy craft and yet are more concerned about not having orders to engage than doing whatever they can to fight back.
The only place I can think of where proceeding without orders under direct confirmed attack is forbidden is when nuclear weapons are involved.
On one hand, I understand not wanting to get in trouble for doing stuff without orders since the US was, at least at that point, definitely more "do stuff only when ordered to" as opposed to Germany's "this is the objective we want. Get it done however you want." method.
On the other hand; I'm pretty sure you'll get in more trouble for just sitting around waiting for orders as the base you're assigned to protect gets blown to pieces around you. Like, did you order the AA guns not to shoot because there were no orders?? If the AA guns are shooting, get the planes up ffs!
You have to look at the situation from a political perspective too. At that moment in time there was no official state of war between the USA and Japan. The attack on Pearl Harbor came before any official declaration of war. Of course to the man on the ground, it's only natural to defend yourself when under attack: but from a chain of command point of view you need to be absolutely certain that any orders are valid (which they would no be as the chain of command was at the time not quick enough to respond). As such the order not to engage was probably just the officers doing what had to be done. They clearly didn't insist very much when their orders were ignored and I wouldn't be surprised if they were officially ordered to stay on the ground but let them go with a wink-wink-nudge-nudge.
Welch should have received the Metal of Honor, why should he have to wait for orders to take off when they are under obvious attack!?
@@5peciesunkn0wn not entirely true, my grandfather was in the Vietnam war. He didn't speak much about it, but one story he did tell me. Was this day that one of the two hangar areas of his base went under attack, they're radios weren't working. So they were strictly following orders from the highest ranking person there, in order to not get in trouble themselves. As my grandfather almost got dishonorably discharged multiple times for preparing helicopter's to go on rescue missions, before a distress call was issued

The point I was making is that few people did the right thing that day at Pearl in response to the Japanese attack.
One of the very first casualties was communications between high command and the men in the field.
So the military, in all their wisdom, proceeded to find fault after the fact. But the systemic failures that day, and the culture that encouraged those failures, never got acknowledged until way later in the war. We did eventually learn, but institutional inertia kept the more broken aspects of the chain of command (the old mentalities of a peacetime army) remained obstacles for years to come.
Study small arms acquisition by BurOrd if you want examples spanning 200yrs of institutional ineptitude. The true meaning of the word retarded. Because sometimes the military does dumb things. [Like collapsing Bagram instead of HKIA]
So yes, in my opinion alone, it seemed a stupid call to reward two pilots for enemy aircraft shot down, and in the same commendation, to dox them for disobedience, specifically as their actions displayed the best possible attributes of courage, reflecting directly on the credibility of the Air Corp as a positive. The very definition of going above and beyond the call of duty.
Sometimes, in order to do the right thing, you have to disobey orders. A moral consideration which seems all the more relevant today...

I'm surprised they manage to repel them. If I saw that zero formation, then I woulda poo my pants and probably try to run away. Those men are hella brave. I salute them

I was stationed in Hawaii at the 25th. I was just an Infantryman however the story of these two goes far down the chain of Army lore as this was the "Army Air Force" during WWII. There's a couple plaques dedicated to those who disobeyed orders around the halls at Wheeler Army Airfield.

This video has given me more new information for a chapter for my book "The American Underdog Fighter of WW2" which is based on the Curtiss P-40 Warhawks and honestly I've never did a project that's proving to be more difficult than I originally anticipated.

I bought a scale model of a P-40 from an Army Surplus Store which has the name of the Flying Tigers Commander.
My planning to have chapters based on the battles that the P-40 Warhawks, P-40 Tomahawks, and P-40 Kittyhawks were involved, which is like the majority of the theaters and the countries that had been provided with the P-40 through the Lend Lease.
I started the project last year and from the start I knew it would take me years since I don't have a team but I've been thinking outside of the box, like I literally went back to my high school (2018 grad) to ask the ROTC/Rifle Team Sargent (the school is Airforce) for information on an aircraft museum that has a P-40 on display and he gave me both a name and number for the curator to a museum.
I have made some progress but it's slow progress which gives me more time to get more work done.
The book you read is some kind of novel or biographi ?

Well I'm not sure what my book will be (maybe both a novel and biography) but I would read both categories of books to use for references, notes and key events, unfortunately due to the virus and the war for Ukraine I haven't been able to go to the library and yes I could use the internet for references but I want to create a original book.
Also I don't use the internet to buy anything because I have a history of being hacked.
That animation of the beach looks gorgeous. The dogfighting scenes were a joy to watch as well and I absolutely love the F-86 at the end. Great work once again 👍

Also would like to put out is the amount of videos you guys release now. With new content every few or so days about historical people and events that are actually put in 3d animations? Hell yes!

At the time I’m replying, they’re at 519k subs. They gained 2k subs in 4 days! That’s insane! They shouldn’t have 2 million subscribers, but 10 mil at least. I’ve seen many animations channels on YT, and the work Yarnhub does is one of, if not the best, I’ve ever seen

I swear I remember a story of a sailor taking out a Japanese plane with a monkey wrench at Pearl Harbor, but I can't find the story anywhere.
Also I thought the Medal of Honor was an award of gallant bravery in the face of innumerable foe. Taking initiative should have elevated him higher, not hindered him.
Yeah well, remember they were junior officers in the USAAF and if were told that they should get off those planes, they should follow the order to the letter, even if its the stupidest order on Earth (which it was at the time). Remember, the officers then did not have the operational flexibility that today's officers have.

How they didn’t get a medal of honour for there actions on that day is beyond me. Also if anyone was wondering how the Japanese planes made it to pearl harbour it’s because initially when they were picked up on radar they were believed to be a flight of b17E’s (this flight later became part of the famous kangaroo squadron) also fun fact a famous b17 known as swamp ghost was part of this flight.

The actions of Ken Taylor and George Welch inspired the scene in the 2001 movie, Pearl Harbor, when Ben Afleck and Josh Hartnett's characters took off to combat the Japanese during the Pearl Harbor attack. Ken Taylor described the movie as, "A piece of trash... over-sensationalized and distorted."

I heard about these two guys. And they were very heroic when the Japanese attacked. The two main characters in the movie Pearl Harbor were loosely based off of these two men.
