  • The 303 Squadron. A legendary outfit made up mainly from Polish aces in exile. Initially frowned upon by the British as undisciplined and lacking skill, the Poles took to their Hawker Hurricanes and became heroes during the battle of Britain. Mirosław Ferić kept a diary of the squadron's exploits, victories and losses. While it's difficult to estimate the exact contribution of every unit into such huge battles as the Battle of Britain. Beyond all question, 303 Squadron was one of the most impactful units of the RAF. Initial wartime reports mention 126 victories by 303 Squadron during the Battle. According to the most recent research they are credited with over 58 verified victories, which still makes them the most efficient aerial unit in the Battle.

also the Bf 110 at 2:00 is wrong. The belly MGs are late war. Also the Spitfires have their ailerons down which means they are fucked. Not flyable in that way. 10:24 the Flaps that should be down are inboard of the ailerons.

Yes, they were brave but they weren't fighting recklessly. They had totally different tactics than RAF and Luftwaffe. In september 1939 Poland had worst airplanes, they were much slower. Flying Hurricanes polish pilots had an opportunity to fly faster fighters. Technically, they took the advantage of that. The most famous Squadrons of polish pilots were: 302 and 303.

A very shortened WWII Polish history lesson:
      (1) With their minds: Polish mathematical geniuses constructed the 1st enigma machine prototype and blueprint to breaking Germanys enigma code.
      (2) In The Air: Escaped Polish fighter pilots formed the 3 most effective fighter squadrons during the battle of Briton. The 3 top Polish squadrons were credited with both the highest number of confirmed kills, and kills per lost pilot.
Including the legendary 303 Polish RAF squadron depicted so well in this video, the most decorated allies fighter squadron of WWII.
      (3) On the Ground: In Italy Polish soldiers lead four separate assaults before defeating the Germans in the battle of Monte Cassino. One of the wars most heavily fortified and fiercely defended strategic German strongholds, and one of the costliest resulting in over 55,000 allied casualties.
Note: The Polish Army and Polish Air Force under British Command, fought in every WW2 major battle, including the Battle of Britain, Market Garden, Monte Cassino, El Alamein, and D-Day.
      (4) The saddest of endings: Despite the promises by both Churchill and Roosevelt, both met in secrete with Stalin and agreed let Stalin/USSR keep and occupy Poland. This decision led to decades of abuse and suffering of the whole Polish population up and until the fall of the Berlin wall.
As a final insult, on Stalin's request to Churchill the WWII Polish surviving soldiers, pilots, and generals were denied participation in Great Briton's Victory Parade.
Honorable mention: In 1940 JOZEF STANISLAW KOSACKI invented the Polish Mine Detector that saved countless Allied lives during the war.
I'm getting pretty old now, but my grandparents barely escaped from Poland. Much of my knowledge was passed on to me though my grandfather and father, as nearly all family history and documents were destroyed in the war and later Russian occupation.
Of course, this is a surface scratch level history above, but gives some incite and starting points for those who enjoy history research...

I met one of the pilots in the 1990's. He was working as a gardener on occasion for my partners Dad in Forres Scotland. My partner had told me he'd been in the RAF. So, I walked up to him saying 'I heard you were in the RAF in the War.' 'Yes a fighter pilot.' I did the only thing I could think of.....stood up straight properly saluted him, shook his hand then said THANK-YOU. We had a little chat, but when Edith and me went to drive off he came around the house to wave goodbye........I wondered if anyone else had ever thanked him.

Wrong- Poland was billed for the armaments sold to it prior to its defeat. No charge was made for any Polish pilot fighting in the RAF.
This should not come as a surprise for the UK itself was still paying its military debts to the US, until after 2010, for equipment the US had provided.

    05:25 If I recall correctly, 303's first kill was a BF-110, not Bf-109.
Also, You missed on Josef Frantisek, a Czech and Honorary Pole in 303, and it's Ace of Aces during battle of Britain.

    • @dcmchugh99
      @dcmchugh99 Год назад +7

To clarify first actual kill while a none operational Squadron was a BF110 (This was claimed as a Dornier DO17 in the pilot's combat report) first operational kill was a BF109. Good call with Frantisek he certainly deserves a mention although the Poles let him do his own thing as he was a bit of a lone wolf and a very successful one in terms of his victory tally. Dowding's " There is good shooting.....within sight of London " was aimed at Frantisek and some other Battle of Britain pilots as he often followed German aircraft over the Channel either towards or to France. Sadly that cost him his life.....nor was he the only Battle of Britain pilot to die that way.

Love the number 303. Significant both because of the number of this squadron and the .303 Lee-Enfield round. Also love it when there are a group of folks who, even to other allies are considered "foreign" and folks may be hesitant to accept them. But then the succeed in spite of any doubts. Reminds me a bit of the mostly-Japanese-American 442nd Regimental Combat Team who ended up being the most decorated US Army unit of the war.

I was actually quite pleased that you mentioned the figure of 126 is likely too much of an exaggeration; it just doesn’t tally with anything else, not even 302 squadron, also Polish, whose numbers tally with other aerial units.
Nonetheless, they did an amazing job. No matter who tallies it, 303 usually end up in the top five, which is quite something.

    Song: Aces in Exile
    Album: Coat of Arms
    Band: Sabaton
In the skies above the isle, Aces in exile prevail
From near and far they arrived, joined the force
Ready to serve the allied command
Sent into training though they already earned their wings
They were ready fly, they were fit for the fight
Once in the air, the battle begins
They have proven their worth, now they fly for revenge
Fighter pilots in exile fly over foreign land
Let their story be heard, tell of 303rd
Fighter pilots from Poland in the battle of Britain
Guarding the skies of the isle
Even at night shadows cover the ground
And the fighting goes on from dusk until dawn
With the claw of the Reich with the claw of the eagle
They were ready to fly, they were ready to die
Up in the air the battle goes on
They have proven their worth, now they have their revenge
Fighter pilots in exile fly over foreign land
Tell their story again, tell of 310
Men from Czechoslovakia in the battle of Britain
Guarding the skies of the isle
Over the battlefield brave men long way from home
Few are the chosen ones sent to the sky to die
Over the battlefield brave men long way from home
Few are the chosen ones sent to the sky to die
    [Guitar Solo]
    Fly, it echoes in history
Turning the tide in the heavens above
Fighter pilots in exile fly over foreign land
When the battle has been won, tell of 401
Fighter pilots from Canada in the battle of Britain
Guarding the skies of the isle
On wings of history they turned from home to live eternally skybound they roam
In all of history, never before was more owed to so few
    Fighter pilots in exile!

I'm in tears as this reminds me of my late father, before WW2 he was due to join the Polish Air Force but it was discovered he was colour blind, so he and his brother ended up in the Polish Army, when WW2 broke out his unit was captured by the Germans, his brothers unit was captured by the Russians, he was never seen again presumed he died in captivity. Apparently Polish soldiers were given the choice to fight for Germany, soldiers got better fed than prisoners, he and so many others managed to escape to the western front where they ended up being billeted in Scotland, there he decided to get a trade and became a Army cook, after the war the Poles were allowed to stay or return to Poland, many stayed as they feared the Russians more than the Germans. He got work in a Bournemouth hotel where he met his British bride and ten years later I was on the scene. He would never talk about the war years I only discovered his story after his passing. However he enjoyed a long fruitful life more than many of his Polish family or colleagues did. He may of not been a hero but his survival skills allowed for my brother and I and my three daughters and nine grandchildren to be born, and I miss him dearly.
