@@thelittledetailscr7231i thought it was meh 10 hours in. Shouldnt take that much to become fun but man... once it clicks, it clicks hard. Cant stop now. If you didnt like previous Bethesda games its probably not fot you though.
They should really consider if UE5 but retooled to have the gameplay features of Creation could be utilized, or consider other engines that they could try if BGS can't have an easier time for the research and development needed to advance Creation far enough to account for the utter scale of ES6 and still track everything. I wonder if that's even possible when you're trying to stream in objects to store data on exactly what was there without having to have massive install / RAM space being used by an Xbox or PC for instance.
Regarding bad dialogues and boring storytelling - We live in extremely extroverted culture (where small-talk is dominating) and most of the great writers are either dead or retired. That is our reality unfortunately.
If they switch from CE2 to UE5, its gonna cut a huge chunk away from the games in terms of the level and amount of interactive items in every scene and their persistence, the persistence and simulation of NPCs, and especially moddability. UE cant handle the same level of item persistence and amount and is also internally much more rigid, which would eliminate much of the modding scene and the scope of what they could do. Many games have suffered due to studios moving from in-house engines to frostbite or UE (like ME:Andromeda).
One thing that I absolutely loved in No Mans Sky was the loot containers that would be the same at every base you laid it down at. It was so convenient!
If you haven't already, you should watch the Digital Foundry breakdown where they explain why the loading screens were necessary. You simply can't do all the things Starfield lets you do without them.
I'll say two things.. 1.) The loading screens, while far too many, are not long enough to have bothered me yet. 2.) I would have loved to be getting 120fps in 1440p consistently with my 3080 but, even in the more asset cluttered areas where FPS drops into the high 50's and mid 60's, these areas seem to be constant at that rate and that makes a big difference compared to potentially bouncing between 100 and 50fps in real time. With that said, the omission of something as logical as a weapon equip button/keybind without having to "favorite" it into a main slot has been a more frustrating, killer of immersion imo. This is mainly because you're likely going to change this fairly often. The actual space travel has been pretty disappointing having previously played Star Citizen and Elite Dangerous BUT, the combat system is intuitive and engaging enough to mostly make up for it... At least until you're hoping to just roam a planet after landing without having to run everywhere. Then it sinks in again.
It seems like others AAA nowadays, we'll have to wait a year or two until the game is properly polished. I'll wait.

This is my first Bethesda game and I’m loving every second of it. Even the loading screens are very well tolerated. I’m so in love with every quest and the world created that I feel like I’ve played several different games inside of this one massive story. Only other game I can think of that gave me that same feeling was the Witcher 3
I’m playing star field on series X Consol and the load screens are like half a second for me so that’s not really an issue for me personally but I can tell you that I freaking love the game now it starts off kind of slow but once it gets going, that goes, I would recommend this game for anybody that likes to play RPG’s. To anyone watching this video play the game for yourself before you take this guy’s opinion to heart because it is nowhere near as bad as what are you saying it’s supposed to be. I’m sorry I just disagree with most of the stuff he’s complaining about.
I mean even tho i was at first expecting something like a spacesim i wouldn't mind at all the fact that it isn't that. But i mean making a game in space with space ship, space travel and combat and not having proper open world and free flight and random encounters in there is just a giant oversight. It's like having Skyrim, where you can't properly run around the map but have to instead fast travel between all major points of interest and only being able to explore around them.
Gotta say, I disagree about the character dialogue. It's one of my favorite parts of the game! Feels like there's so much depth packed into the characters and they grew on me over time. Old man Strauss has become one of my favorites after doing a mission he was involved in because he had such good dialogue with other characters
the complete lack of any inertia or momentum in the players movement bugs the crap out of me. there is no weight to the feeling of your character as you instantly change directions like you are massless.
I have to agree. there are too many games engines out there that could have made this game into a real classic and probably the best game in decades but unfortunately some companies don't want to put in the real effort to make their art truly great.
For me, immersion is really important in a game like this, and the the excessive loading screens and those horribly dead eyes when talking to NPCs just kills it for me. No thanks Bethesda, you lost me. I guess I'll just keep my hopes up if Star Citizen ever truly comes out.
I think a game you hate to love is super detrimental, it tries to give you what you want while falling short and flat on so many occasions. Forcing you to fall into its loops and grinds because it knows you will. It’s designed around addiction.
Ironic as it is, starfield "just works". It's not 10/10, but it's not bad either. It's just a game that exists. I think this is the worse year to just be a game given how many 10/10s have released this year, it makes it harder for starfield to stand out. But the real kicker is just that starfield is yet another bethesda game at it's core. Either you like the bethesda formula and happy to see it in a space setting, or you dont (in which case this game is not for you).
Why is levelcap playing/reviewing a Bethesda open-world RPG if he doesn't like dialogue and character development? Like, Levelcap, my guy, the NPCs literally say "when you have a moment" which literally tells you you don't need to listen to their whole life's story in the middle of battle, THEY WILL TELL YOU LATER IF YOU WAIT. FFS just listen to what they're saying for 2 seconds.
Played 30 min of Star'Loadscreen'Field, and went back to StarCitizen where you do not need loadscreens INSIDE Your ship. Same crappy Armstrong Moment as Elite Dangerous.
the biggest thing preventing me from playing starfield actively is that I cant run the game at 60 fps without using extremely agressive upscaling, even with DLSS mod looks terrible since I play at 1080p, there is little I can do about that
You are right, there was no need to have a loading screen to enter the ship, if what you were going to do to leave the planet was an cinematic take off. Nice review!
creation engine is holding bethesda back, The game is very fun but the tech limitations and constant load screens in a space game is kinda something they should look into.
Why spend millions to build a new engine when you can use the old one and make an obscene profit from. At the end of the day it’s a business decision. Maybe with the money they will work on that nex gen engine.
In short just play a Fallout game again and save the money. Unless you already have gamepass then enjoy. Otherwise just wait for it to get fixed up and mods supported better. Than buy it on some random discount sale.
I've been enjoying it more than I've been annoyed by it. I wish there weren't so many loading screens as well, and the inventory interface is probably what I hate the most. Hopefully modders will fix it.
Notice this review isn’t as popular as ones posted near the same time? It’s because it’s a rational criticism with likes and dislikes instead of bandwagon hate. Thank you levelcap for an actually good review.
Got a taster of the loading screens in the outer worlds and it killed the immersion for me so this will be the same. Its not a day one purchase for me but a sale. If theyd kept the exploration to about 20 planets that had charactor and individuality rather than 1000 bland ones id be interested for sure.
Its not even planets, these are squares like a quilt blanket sewn together and have nothing to do with each other. If you visit one square of this planet, you see some mountain or cool feauture past a boundary, you cannot actually go to the next procedurally generated square because it's an entirely different square that has nothing to with the other square you just came from. Its not elite dangerous, NMS or even Star Citizen when it comes to exploration.
Levelcap always so wise and smart. Been watching you since Battlefield 3 days .. best review so far . The game is not a 10/10 but more like a flawed fun out of 10
Great review. Is your review of the pc version only ? I have a series x. Just curious if it looks and runs as smooth as your video on the series x. Thx in advance
I think this game has sealed the deal that baldur's gate is earning goty this year. It's disappointing people have made mods to implement the most basic of gameplay features in less than 7 days when whole teams with the backing of a massive AAA studio couldn't do in years.
@@tarakivu8861loading screens for 3 seconds are the biggest issue of the day really ??? The game does feel insanely bullet spongey until you get a few ballistic skill upgrades, then things start to feel right. Annoyingly they still have Fallout weapon balance, so a bullet fired from an automatic weapon does 1/10th the damage of its semi-auto counterpart.

Personally poor writing has always been my main gripe with bethesda games, and Starfield is perhaps my favourite out of them because the quests actually have more depth than just "help me kill those bandits"
this is by far the best review of starfield ive seen, it doesnt only focus on the negative and the stupid negatives like the invisible walls (which ive yet to encounter in 82h of playtime). A lot of people only base their reviews on questionnable critisicm and only points to bad things and completely ignore the positives. This is not the case here, both sides are approached and balanced!
I think after watching many reviews of this game, this one finally pushed me off the fence to not purchase the game now until there is a big sale on. Thanks for your review
@@tarakivu8861 more like I have to find time in my busy schedule. Ive been playing it on gamepass, its a good idea to play it there or to wait. Its a fun game but definitely not worth 70. The constant loading is whats killing it for me.
Very good overview and in depth summary of the good and bad. I love it and hate it both lol god the inventory system is like hitting myself in the head with a hammer and moving inventory from tons of loot and crafting resources is like 90% of the game lol
Its tough to get past the terrible Enemy AI. Every video I watch, the enemy is essentially standing there while they are getting shot. They might fire back 5 bullets, but 4 of those shots will miss. I want to get Starfield, but I don't wanna be bored by the lack of a challenge.
Its still brain dead when hard. It's just that they are aimbots that don't miss when shooting and aim straight at your head (and hit everytime) with higher damage ratio and higher health bars. Basically AI sucks but theyre aim bots. A gorilla with a bat is still quite dangerous, even if its not doing strategic thinking.
@@alexandrep4913 after doing some research it looks like all that Hard/Very Hard mode does is make enemies take less damage and make the player take more damage. It doesnt affect enemy accuracy, reaction time, targeting range, awareness, etc etc. Really really lazy programming. If modding can adjust that and make enemies not so brainless, I will probably buy the game. As it sits though, I just cant.
This is a bit of weird one. I see people complaining about the ai, but when I play they enemies run away, take cover and peak over cover. I'm not sure what's going on here.
One thing I never see people talk about for this game is atmosphere, and that's everything to me in a game. There's a reason I love Dark Souls, Cyberpunk 2077, and Starfield so much, and it's all because they have amazing atmosphere. Yes the planets are mostly empty, and the "dynamic events" always play out the exact same, but I can't help but just take time to walk around and soak it all in, knowing I may be the only living thing on that planet. Sure, the graphics, gameplay, quest design, AI and animation are outdated and unimpressive (and the only thing truly "next gen" about this game is the file size) but the art direction and atmosphere is what makes me LOVE Starfield. I rarely get this immersed in a game, even though it's a loading screen simulator. I give the game an overall 7/10 in terms of quality, but a 9.5/10 in terms of my enjoyment.
Spot on! Hoping they at least replace black loading screens with longer char/ship animations so we feel like we're moving, not loading :D Also having to sell 800kg of junk to a merchant with 5'000 credits is super annoying...
Dead eye characters are one of the major gripes I have with Bethesda games. Other than that the sheer amount of content and gigantic world and numerous NPCs to interact with is superb.
I'm a fairly realistic person and I've been playing Fallout and Elder Scrolls for almost 20 years. I knew what I was getting into with Starfield. I've been having a blast. That being said, the lack of optimization, failing to create any sort of seamless/hidden loading screens and the typical Bethesda problems are still frustrating.
the game is actually great, the only bug I encountered is enemy and ally npc getting stuck. They really need to up their braind dead AI. Also more variety of random point of interest in a planet would be good. One thing I don't like is there is no vehicle, I fucking hate walking simulator in a barren planet.

@inflatablepeas6649 pause the game and just listen to your Dad. He won't always be around. Cherish all your moments with your parents.
it is the perfect game if you have insomnia, just play the main mission, you'll be asleep in 10 minutes, guaranteed
24 hours into it so far. Definitely has some flaws, but AMAZING. No game is perfect, I didn't expect it to be. 30 fps on console is a bummer though.
Its hard to even pull 60 on top spec PC's without some form of upscaling tech so I see why it only runs at 30 on consoles
@macattackss4782 nah. I have a top spec pc and it runs above 100 except in the first city/hub at 1440p. Usually around 135 to 140. I've only played like 5 hours tho. Pretty meh game.
@@macattackss4782I can tell you’re a benchmark ret*rd. Those benchmarks are done in the most demanding areas where you spend 1% of your playtime. On a 3080, I get 120+ fps easily in most areas on 1440p medium with DLSS ultra quality preset using the mod. No performance complaints!
@@thelittledetailscr7231i thought it was meh 10 hours in. Shouldnt take that much to become fun but man... once it clicks, it clicks hard. Cant stop now.
If you didnt like previous Bethesda games its probably not fot you though.
It definitely is because its not a solid 30 it's bad in populated areas and it's bad on barren planets it makes no sense.
A lot of people want TEV6 to come out fast and not think about this engine being in the way.
That's a fair review. Their engine is a curse and a blessing at the same time.
+1
I believe you are right. The best games I’ve played were were made by in-house engines.
One thing that I absolutely loved in No Mans Sky was the loot containers that would be the same at every base you laid it down at. It was so convenient!
Bethesda went from Skyrim to Starfield in 12 years.
At this rate of devolution, they would be making Visual Novel style games in the 2030s
They took the time to put a paper note pad on the desk (1:33). 10/10 Game of the Year (the facial animations: stuff of nightmares)
People to this day are still saying that bugs are rare in this game lol. Huffing that copium.
If you haven't already, you should watch the Digital Foundry breakdown where they explain why the loading screens were necessary. You simply can't do all the things Starfield lets you do without them.
25 hours in, I'm really enjoying it. But the only issue I've had is some missions being bugged. No matter what you do, there's no way round it.
Need to start a LvlCapReviews channel. You've got a knack for it, thats clear.
I applaud your fairness.
There's so much I don't like about the game but I can't put the controller down because the good parts are really damn good.
That's about as balanced a review as possible.
Something tells me that Levelcap still prefers Star Citizen over Starfield.
This is the only review that actually gave me a sense of what this game is like and I watched so many reviews it’s remarkable!
This was a great, informative, impartial review, so well done. I'll wait until it inevitably goes on sale during one of Steam's events.
Even if the loading screens are short, they still should not exist.
@@chummygunblablabla
I'm definitely going to buy when it's on steam sales.
Upgrading my ship storage helped me so much, although it took me a while to figure it out.
A true realist never only focuses on the bad. Awesome video
Gotta say, I disagree about the character dialogue. It's one of my favorite parts of the game! Feels like there's so much depth packed into the characters and they grew on me over time. Old man Strauss has become one of my favorites after doing a mission he was involved in because he had such good dialogue with other characters
Strauss is the best character, I agree with that.
Same!
the complete lack of any inertia or momentum in the players movement bugs the crap out of me. there is no weight to the feeling of your character as you instantly change directions like you are massless.
“All easily accessible in just 20 clicks” 😂🤣
You're intro sums up my feelings precisely
Well said with that title. It has it flaws but i`ve played more than 60h in one week. It`s great.
It won't. 😂
No 10/10 game came out this year.
how do you fit the phrase "retro-futuristic" into a sentence? At minute 1:58 YOU DO! (Is that an oxymoron?)
Can't wait to play this game (when it goes on sale)
Man, I hope they get rid of the Creation engine with more advance once
You still make great reviews levelcap! I appreciate honest shit
Played 30 min of Star'Loadscreen'Field, and went back to StarCitizen where you do not need loadscreens INSIDE Your ship.
Same crappy Armstrong Moment as Elite Dangerous.
Basically Fallout
the biggest thing preventing me from playing starfield actively is that I cant run the game at 60 fps without using extremely agressive upscaling, even with DLSS mod looks terrible since I play at 1080p, there is little I can do about that
You are right, there was no need to have a loading screen to enter the ship, if what you were going to do to leave the planet was an cinematic take off.
Nice review!
Not a space sim indeed. Just a game in space. Not even a space game honestly.
creation engine is holding bethesda back, The game is very fun but the tech limitations and constant load screens in a space game is kinda something they should look into.
Why spend millions to build a new engine when you can use the old one and make an obscene profit from. At the end of the day it’s a business decision. Maybe with the money they will work on that nex gen engine.
Great review, fair play. Horrendous some of the click bait video reviews out there.
worst part about it is the horrible performance
I plan to buy this game....when its on sale for $5. Nothing beats Baldurs Gate for me this year.
rolling dices is always fun for me
The "how do I get off the toilet???" still has me rolling 😂🤣
The combat vs braindead AI both infantry and spaceships ruins the game
Just think of fighting AI as pest control. Works for me!
@@swaggitypigfig8413 no fun
I’ve been loving the game so far. It’s definitely Bethesda but it’s part of the charm lol
Skyrim had bad UI and the modders had to fix it, looks like they will have to fix this one as well.
Notice this review isn’t as popular as ones posted near the same time? It’s because it’s a rational criticism with likes and dislikes instead of bandwagon hate. Thank you levelcap for an actually good review.
"Deeply flawed but fantastic."
That's most Bethesda games 😂
i havent been so excited to get on my pc every night and play a game like this in years highly reccomend as long as you're not nit picky it is a blast
Got a taster of the loading screens in the outer worlds and it killed the immersion for me so this will be the same. Its not a day one purchase for me but a sale. If theyd kept the exploration to about 20 planets that had charactor and individuality rather than 1000 bland ones id be interested for sure.
This.
Thx in advance
gonna wait for them to release Starfield VR :D Well, okay, more accurately... I'm going to wait for modders to fix Starfield VR after it's released :D
I think I’ll wait till december when it’s on sale and most of the main bugs have been fixed.
You know a game is great when every video has "flawed" in the title. 😂😂
I think this game has sealed the deal that baldur's gate is earning goty this year. It's disappointing people have made mods to implement the most basic of gameplay features in less than 7 days when whole teams with the backing of a massive AAA studio couldn't do in years.
Idk know about that baldurs gate still has to compete against Zelda
baldur's gate not for everyone
@@MvstWanted I mean you dont have to play for hours per day
Have you not played the buggy, unfinished rushed act that was act 3 in that game. Seems to hand waved away because its inconvenient.
I don't recall that downloads on the PS1 took 3 seconds, haha! Seriously, yes, there are many of them, but on average, they last about 3 seconds.
People talk about loading screens, but I remember Amiga days when I had to change 3 or 4 disks just to play street fighter 2.
Those days are over, the current tech allows for seamless gameplay without loading screens.
They didnt even try to hide them.
@@tarakivu8861loading screens for 3 seconds are the biggest issue of the day really ??? RD2 may not have loading screens, but has a massive one at the beginning, so I don’t really see an issue it’s something they’ve always done , they said it was a Bethesda rpg through and through on a regular basis, it’s order fish and chips and expect something else entirely and shocked when they actually do get fish and chips.
Time-to-kill seems crazy high, but idk if that's just how Bethesda games just are
It’s an rpg as you get stronger and get better weapons then you start mowing enemies down
@mookiestewart3776 thank you, haven't played a lot of RPGs before and I am thinking of giving this one a try
Wholesome thread you love to see it, I’m gonna grab a Xbox and gamepass after work tomorrow I have a ps5. I was gonna try to build my first pc but I didn’t wanna wait forever
The game does feel insanely bullet spongey until you get a few ballistic skill upgrades, then things start to feel right. Annoyingly they still have Fallout weapon balance, so a bullet fired from an automatic weapon does 1/10th the damage of its semi-auto counterpart.
@@sherank244build the PC but surprisingly on Xbox series X the games looks amazing.. 30 fps doesn't feel too bad I think they optimize the controls of the game very well.
Fair review Levelcap. I hope you play some Payday 3 and give us your opinion too. 👍 The way you describe Starfield pros and cons, LEGIT.
Great review. Too many reviewers have such one-dimensional opinions
Personally poor writing has always been my main gripe with bethesda games, and Starfield is perhaps my favourite out of them because the quests actually have more depth than just "help me kill those bandits"
@@AuxiliaryHillmanCould you help me get the mole rats out of my attic?
this is by far the best review of starfield ive seen, it doesnt only focus on the negative and the stupid negatives like the invisible walls (which ive yet to encounter in 82h of playtime).
Or ya know, pirates life
@@tarakivu8861 more like I have to find time in my busy schedule. Why sacrifice precise hours for a buggy game (that I can accept) now, when I can get it 3 to 4 months later at half the price maybe and maybe patched up. Also the fact the last game I bought from Bethesda, region locked the fallout 76. So I’m still salty about that as well.
I would say that it's definitely ok to wait. Very fun, but does have issues.
You can play this Gamepass or you might as well wait until Game of the Year Edition come out.
Ive been playing it on gamepass, its a good idea to play it there or to wait. Its a fun game but definitely not worth 70. The constant loading is whats killing it for me.
🤣 "after 12 hours the game gets good". Nah, you just got used to the smell of Bethesda farts after 12 hours. 🤣
🤡
Very good overview and in depth summary of the good and bad. I love it and hate it both lol god the inventory system is like hitting myself in the head with a hammer and moving inventory from tons of loot and crafting resources is like 90% of the game lol
Its tough to get past the terrible Enemy AI. Every video I watch, the enemy is essentially standing there while they are getting shot. They might fire back 5 bullets, but 4 of those shots will miss. I want to get Starfield, but I don't wanna be bored by the lack of a challenge.
yeah they probably have it on easy mode for contents sake, playing on hard or very hard, mfs got aimbot
Hard mode is quite difficult tbh😢
Is this review based on the PC version? I'm curious about the duration of the loading screens and the PC's hard drive bandwidth
It reminds of when i was learning how to play Dayz. All i heard was keep playing, youll get used to dying. Its now one of my favorite games.
Spot on! Hoping they at least replace black loading screens with longer char/ship animations so we feel like we're moving, not loading :D Also having to sell 800kg of junk to a merchant with 5'000 credits is super annoying...
I'll come back to this one, I haven't downloaded it yet but I feel like I have faith in this one
I think games that teach themselves well are a thing of the past. Developers offloaded that onto content creators, happily or not.
I have been blown away by the AI in this game. Enemies will duck and cover... maybe ive been playing skyrim for too long
Dead eye characters are one of the major gripes I have with Bethesda games.
100% agree ! I’m loving the game but menus and things are so frustrating
the game is actually great, the only bug I encountered is enemy and ally npc getting stuck. They really need to up their braind dead AI. Also more variety of random point of interest in a planet would be good.
One thing I don't like is there is no vehicle, I fucking hate walking simulator in a barren planet.
